FROM THE EDITOR
In the stand-up world there are many avenues one can pursue. You can SUP surf, SUP race, do SUP yoga or just be a recreational paddler. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you get out there and do it. Being on the water is a journey, just like life is a journey. Sometimes we get in the way of our journey and mess it up ... a lot. When you fall off, get back up. Being on the water is a place to connect with the greater powers, feed your soul, love yourself and hopefully gain a greater perspective on life. Focus only on your journey; tap into your paddle experience. You can only share that with others if you are honest with yourself. LUCY LUCILLE

ABOUT In ancient Sanskrit, Samata means harmony and balance. As stand-up paddlers, it is a concept that easily extends to the notion of oneness on the water, of steadiness not just on the outside, but on the inside as well.

TIPS SCOTT ESTRADA
RADIANCE FROM THE INSIDE OUT Four main minerals, when acquired properly and in abundance, can make a profound shift in a person’s radiance level and “glow” factor. Over time, if a person is committed to seeking out foods rich in these four elements, they can unlock a healthy inner beauty.
SILICON Found in blood vessels, bones, cartilage, connective tissue, hair, ligaments, lungs, lymph nodes, muscles, nails, skin, teeth, tendons and the trachea, silicon directs electrical flow through the electrolyte salts in the blood and helps to maintain elasticity of arterial walls. In growing and healing bones, silicon is found then transmuted partly into calcium. Bone mineral density increases when silicon-rich foods and herbs are eaten regularly. Connective tissue parts contain large quantities of silicon, which allows for flexibility and elasticity within skin, tendons and even eye tissue. Our ability to retain moisture in these areas can help prevent premature aging. Whole plant nutrition, hydration and the presence of silicon all play major roles. High concentrations of silicon are present in the hair and nails. Silicon can increase the thickness and strength of the skin, nails, and overall youthful appearance and glow. One is more youthful when there is more silicon in relationship to calcium found in the body. When we’re young, we have more silicon and less calcium; as we age the ratio is reversed and we begin to “calcify,” since our cultural norms promote “demineralization” through a more processed food intake. Even though silicon is one of the most abundant elements on earth, found in sand, quartz and granite, it only shows up in large concentrations in certain foods: • Nettles • Horsetail • Radish • Nopal cactus • Romaine lettuce • Burdock root • Cucumbers (in the skin) • Bell peppers (in the skin) • Tomatoes (in the skin) • Oats • Green grasses such as barley, alfalfa, wheat and oat—can be found in green powders sold in health stores

SULFUR
ZINC
IRON
Foods containing high sulfur support radiance and shine in the skin; some would call it a glow. It’s a true foundation element of all beauty. The oceans, rainwater and all living things contain sulfur as MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane).
Zinc does all its work through the enzyme form in the body. More than 200 different enzymes rely on zinc to perform their tasks—cell growth, cell repair, fertility, sex organ development, night vision, detoxification, collagen growth, and even a better sense of taste and smell are all supported with a good intake of zinc through foods.
Iron is probably the most active element in the human body, doing most of its work in and through our blood. Iron-rich blood creates a warm tint of beauty seen in the skin.
Sulfur is a major player in our hair, skin, nails, liver, brain, pancreas and connective tissue (collagen). Sulfur compounds like glucosamine give cartilage its strength and resilience. Sulfur takes many forms in the body that build, repair, detoxify, cleanse and create overall elasticity. Sulfur-rich foods feature strong tastes and flavors: • Arugula • Hot chili peppers • Broccoli • Brussels sprouts • Garlic • Onions • Horseradish • Kale • Mustard leaves • Cabbage (krauts) • Bee pollen • Blue-green algae • Hemp seeds • Pumpkin seeds • Watercress • Spirulina • Radishes
Zinc working with vitamin A and sulfur will build stronger hair- and working with vita E to keep healthy reproductive organs in both men and women. The healing of burns and scars are supported by zinc’s activity, as is the repair of DNA damaged by overexposure to X-rays or radiation. These foods, especially in their raw form, are rich in zinc: • Coconuts • Cashews • Pine nuts • Pumpkin seeds • Poppy seeds (nature’s richest) • Pecans • Macadamia nuts • Sunflower seeds • Sesame seeds Combine these foods with sulfur-rich greens like arugula or watercress for a perfect combo!
**Combine sulfur-rich foods with a healthy fat like avocado, nuts, oils or seeds to balance the strong elements that can create fermentation or gas in the gut if not assimilated well.
OVER TIME, AS YOU EAT MORE MINERAL-RICH FOODS, YOU WILL OPEN UP THE INNER RADIANCE AND BEAUTY THAT WILL SLOW THE AGING PROCESS AND ALLOW YOU TO GLOW! BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF AND LEARN GOOD HABITS, SEEKING OUT THE CLEANEST LOCAL SOURCES OF THESE AMAZING FOODS TO ENJOY AND DEEPLY NOURISH YOU.
Chlorophyll (the blood of plants) and our hemoglobin are essentially identical. The main difference is in the center molecule—magnesium is at the center of chlorophyll and iron is at the center of hemoglobin. These dark green plants contain iron too and when we eat them we give our blood a big boost to help carry oxygen throughout the body so the respiratory system is in constant need of good iron. Two-thirds of the body’s iron in found in the blood, and the rest is in the bone marrow, liver and spleen. Iron helps to create a magnetic blood current to help blood flow through small vessels, nourishing the tissues and removing waste. The best iron-rich foods include: • Onions • Burdock root • Cherries • Blackberries • Collards • Young lettuces • Nettles • Parsley • Shallots • Spinach • Grasses (oat, barley, wheat, alfalfa) • Sea veggies (nori, kelp, dulse) • Green veggie juices (raw, fresh, organic) • Dark green leafy veggies • Most red-colored berries Namaste’

TIPS CASI RYNKOWSKI
TRAIL RUNNING
PHOTOS BY RACHEL MCCARTY
I have never been a fan of running. In fact, I’ve avoided it like the plague for years. It was not until a good friend forced me out on a trail run that I got hooked. My first trail run was a short three-miler but it was filled with roots, rocks, several inclines and a few creative MacGyver-type crossings. I walked away sweatsoaked and muddy, with sore abs, spent quads and raging glutes. Right then and there I knew this would be perfect cross-training for standup paddling.
Trail running offers a surprising list of benefits for the standup paddler, balance training being the most obvious. Jumping over roots and rocks, and maneuvering around awkward and uneven trails, is kind of like paddling on choppy seas. Your abs are constantly engaged, even in between each stride, anticipating what is to come. Then there is the leaping, bounding and need for lateral agility, all of which requires balance and core activation. A constant shift in position also fires many muscle groups, making this functional training at its best. Interval training is an important component to improving your paddling, and trail running disguises it politely. Obstacles hide inclines and your mind is tricked into thinking it’s not as bad as it looks. Inclines are often delivered in quick one-two punches, making them bearable but intense. Add in those unstable surfaces and your interval now has added performance-boosting power. Training the mind is something that many athletes don’t think about very often but it’s the thing that could help you dig deeper and go longer in paddling. Trail running trains the mind to become hyper-focused. You can’t think about anything else when you are looking ahead for what is coming next. When you are on a difficult incline, dancing with rocks and roots, you need to dig deep to stay focused. In standup paddling, downwinders, races, and surfing all require your mind to be clear and focused. Outside of sport performance, trail running is also the perfect way to clear your mind from the stresses of work and life. If you are an avid runner and struggle with running injuries, try taking it to the trail. Trail running provides a softer surface than asphalt. It also helps you build strength in stabilizer muscles in the legs. In the long run, this will help reduce injuries for many other sports, such as paddling and surfing. Running on uneven terrain also causes you to take shorter, quicker strides. This forces you to land more on the forefoot than the heel. This type of stride change allows for faster acceleration than heel-toe running with longer strides. Taking a break from paddling is very important and trail running could be your perfect cross-training ticket. With all these benefits, plus the added bonus of being outside in nature, how could you not at least give it a try? After all, your trail run could lead you to some spectacular vistas. She’s also a Werner Team Paddler, BIC Ambassador and Virus International Ambassador. DIY
AVOCADO HAIR MASK
The change from fall to winter can leave skin and hair dry, brittle and lackluster. This very simple avocado hair mask uses just three ingredients and will restore your hair to a shiny, glossy mane. AVOCADO HAIR MASK Ingredients 1 ripe, medium to large avocado 1
/4 cup olive oil
1
/2 lemon, juiced
Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Whip or blend until smooth. Apply 1 inch from root all the way through ends. Leave on for 20 minutes. Shampoo and rinse. You may need to do this twice, depending on how well your hair absorbed the mask. Condition and style as usual. Then strut your stuff knowing you’ve got lustrous locks! TIPS JULIE ROACH
WARRIOR 2
VIRABHADRASANA 2 Start with a warm-up paddle then anchor in a calm area.
1. From downward facing dog, step your right foot forward and drop your left knee to the board. Off-set your stance so your right foot is closer to the right rail and your left knee is over to the left a bit. The center handle hold should be directly under your hips. With your core engaged, look up at the horizon and take a deep breath. Once centered, walk your hands up to your knee and extend your arms to the sky in modified warrior 1.
1
2. Rotate your torso and extend your left arm forward and right arm back behind you. Challenge your balance and move your eyes slowly toward the back hand or the back of your board.
2
3. Come back around to center and bring your hands to the board. You can simply step back into downward dog, or take a full vinyasa through Chatarunga, cobra then downward dog. Complete steps 1 through 3 on the left.
4. Full expression, warrior 2: From downward dog, step your right foot forward in front of the handle hold (turn your right toes just slightly in toward the stringer to help balance). With both hands on the board, turn your left (back) foot flat so your heel is down and just off to the left of the stringer. Look up and take a full breath.
3
4. When you’re ready, with eyes on the horizon, start to walk your hands up to your knee. With your core fully engaged and a sweet smile on your face, stretch your arms up and overhead, float them open and rotate your torso to the long edge of the board. Press down through your feet and isometrically draw your feet toward each other while powering up your entire abdominal girdle of muscles. Embrace your inner warrior and let the breeze or the current move your board gently. This is one of the more empowering SUP yoga poses! Some of the easiest postures in the studio can be the most challenging on the water. The practice of yoga on the water brings fresh eyes to your yoga practice. It brings you back to self-discovery and the ability to observe what is in the present moment. With practice, in a short time, you will find that your physical body will improve and your level of awareness will be enhanced.

TIPS AMBER SHADWICK
YOGA AS MEDICINE:
YOGA THERAPY, AN INNOVATIVE MODALITY FOR HEALING The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine released a survey in 2004 that deemed yoga the fifth most commonly used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) modality. In 2007, the National Health Interview Survey found that yoga ranked sixth. Scientific studies concerning yoga continue to evolve, but results of myriad clinical studies conclude that yoga as a CAM has matchless therapeutic effects. Harmoniously, as participation in mind-body fitness programs such as SUP and SUP yoga enlighten our social norms, it is essential that athletes and enthusiasts alike know the potential benefits: Yoga is medicine. Therapeutic yoga is defined as the application of yoga postures and practices designed for the treatment of specific health conditions. The prevention, reduction and alleviation of structural, physiological, emotional and spiritual pain and limitations are all inspired and accomplished outcomes of precise yoga therapy. By understanding and utilizing yoga as a CAM, we can harvest a series of physiological events in our body. Muscular strength and flexibility gains will help to promote and improve respiratory and cardiovascular function, which will reduce stress. Improvements in sleep patterns and overall well-being are unparalleled aftereffects of yoga as a complementary alternative medicine. Accordingly, taking our practice into nature, on the boards, unconsciously invites in serenity and surrender. The stress-free, balance-provoking environment stimulates hormonal balance and helps to improve neurotransmitter control.
As active, health-conscious consumers, it is imperative that we begin to integrate therapeutic yoga into our habitual practices. As a progressing, integrative yoga therapist, I hope you’ll commit to doing so, simply the journey is never ending! I believe the following principles may enlighten your relationship with and understanding of yoga, on board and off board, as a healing system. The need to incorporate it into our daily life is fundamental for vitality, athleticism, stress reduction, balance and, most significantly, sustainability and enriched well-being.
1. The body is a holistic entity comprised of various interrelated dimensions inseparable from one another. The health or illness of any one dimension affects the other dimensions.
2. Individuals and their needs are unique and therefore must be approached in a way that acknowledges individuality. Each individual practice must be designed and tailored accordingly.
3. Yoga is empowering; you are your own healer. Yoga engages the individual in the healing process. Playing an active role in the journey toward better health inspires healing to evolve from within (intrinsically) vs. from an outside source (extrinsically). Self-autonomy is achieved.
4. The quality and state of the individual’s mind is crucial for healing. When the individual has a positive mind-state, healing happens more organically and in a timely manner. If the mind-state is negative, healing will be prolonged or never evolve. Let us acknowledge that conventional and contemporary medicine has the ability to heal physical diseases and alleviate psychological disorders. Nevertheless, modern medicine is still far less effective in healing the emotional, intellectual and natural layers of our human entity, all of which harmfully affect outcomes in overall health and athletic performance. So, by exercising the discipline of yoga and its holistic model of health, our organic paths to superior wellness can and will naturally transpire. Simply stated, yoga and yoga modalities like SUP yoga are remedies in our overstressed, hyper-static and unbalanced world. Amber Shadwick, owner of FITSIDE, is a nationally recognized fitness and wellness professional. She has developed the SUP yoga program at Hilton Head Island’s premier outfitter, Outside Hilton Head. As a BIC SUP Ambassador, she inspires balance and fluidity as the roots for enhanced well-being. Learn more about Amber at ambershadwick.com. 34

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO GO BY BOAT TO TAKE YOUR BOTE TO THAT SECRET FISHING SPOT.
Lacey Kelly 30 Hunting and fishing guide and operations manager at Florida Outdoor Experience, a boutique hunting and fishing lodge located in Chiefland, in the heart of Old Florida. “You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl.” Captain Lacey Kelly fits that bill to tee. grid. We managed to connect with her on one of the rare moments she had Wi-Fi to learn just how she got there and what she loves about what she does.
It’s an evolution that began in Fort Myers, Florida, where I guided around the Sanibel and the Captiva Islands for snook, redfish and tarpon. A major addiction to fly fishing took me to Belize. I spent two years as a professional fly fishing bum, sipping rum and bonefishing
down stretches of beaches. Last October a hog hunt planted me back in the woods and I realized I needed to get back to my roots and back to guiding in my favorite place on earth. My life and my job are seasonal. I spend the majority of the fall and winter in the woods for deer season, as well as early spring for turkey season, and the rest I fill with fishing. Tarpon season runs April through June, so it’s guaranteed I’m on the water most every day. That’s followed by commercial lobster fishing and spearfishing with my family in the Keys for the month of August. Then rinse and repeat!
“... I NEVER HEAR ANYONE SAY THEY REGRETTED DOING WHAT THEY LOVE.”
talking hunting and fishing; it’s what I was born to do. I’ve made attempts at having a “real” job in the course of my adulthood, but they never stuck. Being outdoors always wins and it’s a natural gravitational pull I no longer fight.
A typical day includes watching the sun come up over French press coffee, either in my tree stand scouting for upcoming hunts or on the water with a fly rod in hand, searching for tails and wakes for my next charter. Scheduling hunts and fishing charters, checking game trail cameras and tying flies are daily occurrences at my job. I’m also in charge of social media and marketing for Florida Outdoor Experience. From the moment when guests arrive at the lodge to the moment they leave, I’m focused on their experience with us. It’s not tough to engage with our clients when I’m
I come from a long line of Florida outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen. As a fifth-generation Floridian I’m pretty positive that lifestyle is ingrained in my blood. There was never any time to play sports as a kid because we were too busy hunting and fishing. In the early 1900s, my father’s side of the family was headed to Cuba from North Carolina with 90 mules in tow to homestead there because they heard the hunting and fishing were off the charts. They ended up passing through Fort Myers, Florida, and never left. Farming was their forte and living off the land was how they survived. Just before I was born, my family got into the cattle ranching business. Growth and urban sprawl began to take the area into a different era, and that’s when our family’s land was taken by eminent domain to build the first major airport in Southwest Florida. As a teenager, I fell in love with my first fishing guide and the rest is history. We married when I was 20. After a few years, I decided that I wanted to spend every day on the water. After seven years of full-time guiding, I took a trip to Belize with Simms
Fishing, a top fishing apparel company. We were doing a photo shoot and I was trying to catch permit, one of the most elusive fish on the flats. Later, I took a leap of faith and moved to the island of San Pedro, in the heart of flats fishing heaven. The journey was incredible, and I will always see Belize in my dreams. I have plans to visit often, but I’m back where my heart belongs right now in true, wild Florida. All it took was getting back to the oak hammocks, cypress swamps, salty shorelines and grassy Florida flats to make me realize that it’s not only where I belong but where my story started, and it’s more than likely where it will end one day.
The connection runs deeper than I can describe. I’m drawn to wide-open spaces, whether it’s in the woods or on the water. It’s the setting where I feel the most alive. My favorite places in the world are the ones where you find yourself looking in every direction and you don’t see another soul. It’s those places that I crave; it’s those places where I’ve made my best memories. My happiest moments are in the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, when I can’t help but focus on the magic in my surroundings.
Sometimes it’s enlightening and sometimes it’s complicated. Overall, it’s liberating. It’s hard to explain. No one sympathizes when I can’t get cell service to call them back within a day or so or send that email that they’ve been waiting for because we are so plugged in nowadays. My time in Belize prepped me for my current situation. If I’m not able to connect to Wi-Fi, then you probably won’t be able to get in touch with me. It’s become my norm, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I just wish people would understand and get it when I say, “Hey, I’ve got to drive out a good ways to call you!” Mornings are refreshing and evenings are peaceful. I twitch out when I get in a city

nowadays; I can only take traffic in doses. My idea of traffic is letting the gopher turtle cross the dirt path I’m on. Cabin life is dope. I’m fortunate to live in an 1800s cabin that was brought down from West Virginia and reconstructed in the middle of the 1,500 acres I reside on at Florida Outdoor Experience. Front-porch sits with aged whiskey and good company couldn’t happen in a better setting.
One of my best friends got into it as a paddleboard instructor back when I was guiding in Southwest Florida full time. We had a blast throwing the boards in and getting lost in the mangroves. Not too long after that I moved to Belize and during a photo shoot with Yellow Dog Fly Fishing in Glover’s Atoll I landed several big bones off an inflatable board. I was hooked. So I started bonefishing a ton off the board in front of my residence on the beaches of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. When I moved back to Florida, Rob from BOTE Boards and I connected and started to chat about fishing SUP-style. It’s stealthy, affordable and uncontrollably fun. I’ve since landed a pile of bass, tarpon, redfish and snook off my paddleboard. Talk about up close and personal—it’s the best way to get your fly in front of a fish’s face!
The fish-ability. It’s what every technical fisherman wants from a mode of transportation to get on your favorite species. I love how it forces me to take things slow, at nature’s pace. When I’m fishing out of my Hell’s Bay Flats Skiff, I will often cover a ton of ground and fish a wide area in a short amount of time. When I’m on my BOTE board, I tend to take more in, focusing on the details and fine-tuning my game. I always throw my YETI 45 Tundra on my AHAB BOTE board when I’m fishing. It allows me to tie on a fly, tote my goods and take a break when needed.

“MY BIGGEST CONCERN AS AN OUTDOORSWOMAN IS THAT GENERALLY SPEAKING, MOST PEOPLE ARE SO PLUGGED IN TO TECHNOLOGY THAT THEY DON’T KNOW HOW TO PLUG IN TO NATURE.”
Do it. If it’s for you and you’re determined to make it your sole focus, everything else will fall into place. I love hearing stories about people following their passions. purpose in some distant land, it’s inspiring to me. It takes guts, and it’s not all glamour. However, I’ve noticed that I never hear anyone say they regretted doing what they love. The advice I’ve taken from those that have walked a similar path before me has always centered on taking the risk, and you will find the reward in not only the experience but also the journey.
It was tough in the beginning. I didn’t have any female mentors or know any other female guides in Florida. Honestly, at the time, I don’t think any were doing it as a full-time job like I was. The spotlight is always on you and judgments are cast much quicker and with little reprieve. It took a couple of years before most of the other guides respected me on the water. At that time, I was fortunate enough to have a husband who was a well-respected guide. He showed me the ropes and sharpened my skills. The physical aspect of being a saltwater
A PRIZED REDFISH CAUGHT ON HER 11’6” BOTE DRIFT INFL ATABLE
flats guide as a female can be taxing. Chucking a 10-foot cast net over and over again in search of the perfect bait not only humbles you but can also hurt you. The reward is in the smile and pure joy that keeps all of the grunt work in perspective. When you experience guiding a little girl to her very first fish, it’s all very worth it. The majority of my trips were light tackle flats fishing with bait. As the years went on it was a natural evolution into fly fishing. I dreamed about it, I struggled with it and I eventually got pretty good at it.
On a side note, there is a growing trend in the fishing industry where women are getting their captain’s license and marketing themselves as a “captain” on their social media and websites, yet they’ve never taken a guided trip. I would encourage them to take a step back and either redirect their “marketing” or get to it and be legit. It’s sometimes frustrating and somewhat laughable when I’m compared to people who are misleading folks into thinking they are the real deal. Anyone can get their captain’s license, but that doesn’t make you a guide.
Be transparent. We all have to start somewhere, but we also have to give respect where it is due. I’m beginning to see a couple of up-and-coming women who are the real deal in Florida, and it brings an enormous smile to my face to think about how far we have come as females in the outdoors and what the future brings.

Nature is my temple. It has so many metaphors in life. My biggest concern as an outdoorswoman is that generally speaking, most people are so plugged in to technology that they don’t know how to plug in to nature. As a guide and instructor, I know the difference and how to help people connect to what matters. I never force it, but I highly encourage each client and guest at the lodge to put the phone or tablet down and focus on their surroundings. Currently, I have some women’s outdoor retreats in the making. It will be a mix of outdoor activities at our location at Florida Outdoor Experience in North Florida. I want to create a learning environment for women that allows them to find their passion in the outdoors. It will involve activities like learning how to tie their own flies, target practice with bows and guns, how to cast a fly rod and much more. It’s in the works for 2016.
It’s easy to go fishing or hunting with your other half, and it’s a great way to learn more about the outdoors. However, I encourage each and every one of you to do it yourself. Don’t wait on your best guy friend, boyfriend or husband to do it all for you. If you want to get the most out of your outdoor passions and connect on all levels, then my best advice is to do a little homework and get out there and try. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not one of those people who is just naturally good at everything I love. I’ve struggled to become a better spear fisherman, bow hunter and fly fisherman my entire life. The good news is that you can always learn something new and you can always improve, so don’t let small failures get in your way. Have the courage to try and, when you fail, to pick yourself up and try again. The reward is in the experience and the journey. Like I said, you have to start somewhere—it’s up to you how far you take it!

WHEN YOU FIRST meet 18-year-old Fiona Wylde, you see a young woman full of vibrancy, a sunny smile and a perfect picture of health. Like any of us, she has her share of ups and downs, but she doesn’t let that dull her competitive edge. When Steve Gates, owner of Big Winds Hood River, created the Big Winds Junior Elite Team (JET), Fiona found herself jumping on board, literally. She began paddling at 14. When she did her first downwinder, she says, “That is when I was loving life! The feeling of that acceleration down that wind-generated wave was so incredible; it hooked me on the sport.” Even today, she says it’s her favorite part of stand-up paddling, and nothing beats a good run at home on the Columbia River. She also started to race at 14. “Racing kind of fell into place right in front me,” she says. “I was in Hood River. There were two races in early summer and Steve told us we were racing. Sounded fun. He said we could do it, so I trusted him and did it.” Fiona remembers it wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination, but it was fun and rewarding to cross the finish line, hear her teammates cheering and feel that sense of accomplishment. It just clicked, and she decided to do another race near her hometown. At the end of the season, Steve had planned a trip for four of the original JET members (Fiona, Alyson Fromm, Ben Grodner and Sofia DeWolfe) to compete in the Battle of the Paddle 2011, in Dana Point.

It was an eye-opening look at the sport of stand-up paddling, and that inspired her to paddle competitively. At 15, Fiona discovered SUP surfing on her first trip to Maui with her best friend Bernd Roediger and his family. Her love of the sport would also take her into a sponsorship with Starboard in December 2014 and allow her to compete in an entirely different venue besides stand-up paddle racing. Signing with Starboard has allowed her to follow her dreams around the world. “The support they have given me is unreal, and between the boards and my teammates I can’t think of a better SUP brand,” she says. When she was 16, Fiona won her first major elite race, the 2013 Columbia Gorge Paddle. It holds a special place in her heart since Hood River is home base. Since then, she’s podiumed at every Stand Up World Series and every SUPRacer.com 6-Star event she’s entered. This year she finished in second place in the Stand Up World Series and third in the SUPRacer.com World Rankings. In Surfing, she was the first female to make it through the Men’s Trials of a Stand Up World Tour contest and Sunset Beach, Oahu, and to compete in the men’s main event. In 2015, she finished in eighth place in the Women’s Stand Up World Tour of Surfing and was awarded the 2015 SUP Connect Female Paddler of the Year. When Fiona is not competing, she tries to take deep breaths and slow down a bit. Because so much of her year is competition and training, she spends the off-season having fun paddling and surfing when the conditions are best, without any of the pressure that she tends to put on herself at competitions. Fiona SUP surfs, surfs, windsurfs, and does some downwinders and training workouts to keep things balanced. Off the water, she likes doing little art projects and tries to improve her filming skills. Cross-training is a major part of Fiona’s routine. “I feel that doing multiple sports really helps in all sports,” she says. “I’ve grown up windsurfing, and that is where knowledge of water sports comes from. Being able to read the water with many different boards under your feet helps you learn how to adapt to different conditions. Besides doing other water
sports, I like to incorporate land workouts into my training. Running, getting my heart rate up and down in intervals, is extremely crucial to SUP training, as intervals are what we’re constantly doing as SUP racers. And strength training like pushups, crunches and pullups all help me become stronger in the right places to make me paddle faster and longer.” Fiona admits to having her fair share of challenges this year. In May, at the beginning of the season, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This was a major shock to Fiona, her family and close friends. Type 1 diabetes differs from type 2. Type 2 evolves slowly and often comes from an unhealthy lifestyle. With type 2 diabetes, the pancreas still produces insulin, but the body cannot absorb it. With type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops producing insulin altogether. Now, Fiona has to think like a pancreas to keep her blood sugar level, by deciding how much insulin she needs and by thinking about exercise. “It’s been a massive change that I’ve been trying to adapt to over the last five months,” she says. “As far as I’m concerned, things have gone about the best they could have. Of course I’ve had my mental lows, but that happens even if you don’t have diabetes. The best thing for me is to eat healthy and constantly monitor my blood sugar levels and make sure I’m in a safe range.”
Favorite boards and paddles?
For racing, I absolutely love the 2016 AllStar 12’6’’x 24’’. This board is the perfect all-around board. It’s really fast in flat water, is very stable in surf and catches bumps unbelievably well in downwind conditions. I’m only 5 feet 3 inches, so the 7’1’’ Zane Schweitzer Pro Model is my favorite go-to stand-up surfboard. It’s still plenty stable, but has so much maneuverability that it’s incredibly fun in all surf! I’m fortunate enough to be sponsored by Werner Paddles. The Grand Prix Race paddle is so incredible and their new Small Fit does exactly what it says: fits smaller people perfectly! I use the Grand Prix S1000. For surfing I use the Werner Nitro. It’s strong enough to withstand heavy surf, yet light enough to feel like a feather when I’m paddling into a wave.

What does stand-up paddling do for your soul?
Stand-up paddling has so many aspects to it. That is what is so amazing. I can get very competitive, or I can go for a chill paddle or surf and clear my head. Whenever I am standing on water, putting my paddle in the water one stroke after another, it’s a soothing rhythm. I can go as fast or as slow as I like. It’s my decision how fast I go and where I paddle. I get the best feeling when I paddle to a beautiful place and just look around. I have a connection with nature that is so strong, and the natural beauty surrounding me is so captivating. In that moment, I know I am living life to its fullest. That feeling is unparalleled.

How does the lifestyle of stand-up paddling differ from the sport of stand-up paddling?
I think the lifestyle and the sport of SUP are one and the same. To be in the sport, you are typically a healthy individual, or looking to become one. If I could use two words to encompass stand-up paddling, they’d be “healthy” and “fun.” Both of these words describe the lifestyle and sport side of stand-up, and that is what will continue to make SUP more and more popular.
What’s the best advice you can give someone for wanting to get into SUP?
The No. 1 thing is to have fun! Stand-up paddling can be fun for everyone! That is why our sport is growing so quickly. But when you’re getting started, make sure you have the proper safety equipment: a leash, life jacket, and the appropriate-size board and paddle. The next thing is to get a couple of your girlfriends to go paddle with you. Maybe conditions aren’t the greatest, but when you’re out paddling with good friends, the people can make the session!

RIVER FASHION IS AS IMPORTANT AS RIVER ETIQUET TE.
W
WE ARE, AT first glance, a motley crew. Tumbling out of five vehicles at the launching ramp for the Lower Salmon River, with books, cracker boxes and crossword puzzles spilling out the open doors, we rush toward each other with greetings and laughter, ending up in a tangled knot of hugs. Gear is everywhere—stowed in trailers, strapped to roof racks, tucked behind seats. Kids are hot and sticky, tired from the long drive to western Idaho. We have yet to rig the rafts, load the gear, and plan our itinerary for our river trip through rugged basalt and limestone gorges, but in our minds the hardest part of the trip is over. We have all made it to the launch; let the games begin. Fourteen hours after our arrival at Hammer Creek on Idaho’s Salmon River, we are afloat: four rafts, two SUPs, 10 adults ranging in age from 42 to 72, and seven kids ages 4 through 11. Just Grandma and Grandpa, their offspring, the spouses, the grandkids and eight cases of Sierra Nevada River Ryed IPA. Bright skies, warm water and 73 miles of Class II-III whitewater lie ahead. Bliss. The idea for a three-generation river trip was conceived the previous year, when a select subset of the family reconnoitered the Lower Salmon with great success. “Wouldn’t it be fun,” we asked ourselves, “to radically complicate the logistics, belabor the decision-making process and necessitate the securing of larger campsites by doubling the number of people on the trip next year?” The idea of quality family time triumphs over practicality, and 12 months later we find ourselves with 13 family members and an additional almost-family unit of four, wrestling a mountain of gear down to the river’s edge—all we will need (and more) for six days on the river. The jumble of dry bags we unload from the vehicles bely the tight organization that has actually taken place over the past few weeks. Thanks to Google, lists of personal and group gear are easily shared and meal sign-ups require little more than entering one’s name in a cell. We have not only the essentials, but also such luxury items as a lime squeezer, oven mittens, poi balls and a ukulele. What might appear to be a yard sale is actually a fairly well-oiled machine of precision packing logistics. Or so we like to think, at least.

SUPS WERE USED FOR EVERY THING FROM VEHICLES TO L AUNCHING PADS.
While not quite an afterthought, the SUPs were not initially on the list of essential gear. A few of us in the group are whitewater kayakers, most of us have some expedition rafting under our belts, and nearly all of us were in our younger years either raft guides or Outward Bound instructors. We’d SUPed a little here and there — on the Pacific waters off Troncones, Mexico; on the lakes and flatwater stretches of the Northwest — but with kids, jobs and mortgages, none of us was exactly on the fast track to adopt new recreational activities like SUPing. But still, there was something compelling about SUPs, and since we had access to two of them for the river trip we decided to bring them along, just in case someone wanted to try them out. The friendly competition for time on the two SUPs begins about five minutes after two of the more calculating adults on the trip secure them at the launch, and continues unrelentingly until the moment we pull off the river at Heller Bar on the Snake River a week later. With only two SUPs and a handful of rapids that can’t be safely SUPed, even given our collective limited SUPing skillset, the SUPs are in high demand from dawn until dark. The kids commandeer them in the eddies at camp the moment we land and are out on them again as soon as they wake up the next morning. As we load the rafts, the kids holler “I call a SUP!” the way my friends and I used to call “Shotgun!” to nab the front seat back in high school. The adults try to be generous and let the kids have their fun, but darn it, we want our own fair share of SUPing time. Subterfuge follows. We discover that the way to get the kids off the SUPs is to get them cold as quickly as possible. Thus we ride them on the bows of our SUPs through some of the splashy class II+ rapids and get them soaked, necessitating a warm-up ride for them on one of the rafts, which frees us up for some SUP alone time until the next kid begs for a ride. Had we possessed the skills to have the kids ejected into a safe-but-scary hole to take them off the SUP craze for a while and commandeer the boards for ourselves, we just might have done so. The only person not clamoring for SUP time is Nino, the 71-year-old grandmother on the trip. Although Nino has since become a lake SUPing fiend, she spends much of the Salmon trip crouched in the stern of one of the rafts in what she called her “foxhole.” With a foil-covered GoLite umbrella held over her head, Nino has her foxhole sealed up nearly watertight. No foot soldier weathered mortar attacks in a trench with more focus than Nino in her own little rubber pocket of emotional safety. I SUP my first true rapid on the first day, a class II rock garden. It is exhilarating — a thrilling dance of maintaining my balance and trying to steer a safe line. At the bottom of the rapid, still upright and dry, I think to myself, “Hello, SUPing; where have you been all my life?” I then promptly capsize on an eddy line. Three days pass in rafting and paddleboarding paradise. The white sand beaches beckon, the water is inviting, the food is superb and the kids don’t fight. We row and SUP rapids called Rollercoaster, Pine Bar, the Maze and Bodacious Bounce. We see pictographs and mining remnants. We make Andy Goldsworthy-inspired temporary art installations with polished stones. The kids crack rocks open to reveal crystals inside. We crack beers open to take the edge off

the afternoon heat. If heaven exists in river form it is here, along this narrow ribbon of geologic and human history. It is on the river that we feel most like ourselves. Unencumbered by the small stresses of daily life, we are free to be our best selves. We’re interested and interesting. We’re patient, tolerant, generous. There are no to-do lists driving our agenda out here, no emails to check, no bills to pay. We’re able to be the people we believe ourselves to be. Back in the day, back before kids and mortgages, our lives were laced with seemingly huge swaths of free time, when we could disappear into the wilderness for weeks. We paddled the Grand Canyon in the winter, once going 23 days without seeing another party on the river. We hiked desolate stretches of Newfoundland coastlines. We climbed Joshua Tree’s granite mounds until our fingers bled. This week on the Salmon reminds us of those days of unfettered freedom, of the discovery of wild places and, more importantly, the people we could be in those places. Before and after this week we are, of course, fairly mainstream adults. We’re parents and community members. We serve on nonprofit boards and volunteer at our kids’ schools. We are acupuncturists, teachers, nonprofit administrators and small-business owners. We’re fortunate; we all love what we do. What we do, however, is not who we are. Our jobs feed our families, but expeditions like this one feed our souls. When Mike, who is allergic, gets stung by a wasp at lunch on the third day, we are reminded just how far we are from civilization. Although this stretch of the Salmon is not particularly remote, we’re still pretty far from help by most standards. An evacuation would take at least half a day at best, and at worst might take too long to successfully reverse an anaphylactic reaction. We give Mike Benadryl and get an Epi-Pen ready, and he eventually recovers without incident. Still, it’s an unsettling reminder that we have chosen to take precious cargo — our children and our aging parents—on an adventure that is not without potential consequences. It’s a risk, indeed, but one we take without hesitation. “What did one paddleboard say to the other paddleboard?”
my 8-year-old asks us one morning. Without waiting for our guesses, she answers her own riddle: “‘Sup, SUP?” It becomes the catchphrase for anyone on a SUP for the rest of the trip. Four-year-old Una discovers that if Uncle Jon paddles a SUP and she hangs onto the back, she can cop a bit of a fast ride, a little like inner tubing behind a motorboat. “Paddle, paddle,” she screams through her laughter, her tiny body nearly skimming the water’s surface in the SUP’s wake. Although the Lower Salmon is a family-friendly river, there are a couple of rapids that give pause for scouting. We pull the rafts up on shore while we look for our lines, then attempt to replicate these lines once we launch again. Nino tends not to scout, referring instead to a copy of the river guide that is located on each raft. One formidable drop, Slide Rapid, looms legendary, as it becomes unrunnable at higher flows. No matter how many times we reassure Nino that Slide is going to be a breeze at 6,000cfs, she’s not going to believe it until she sees it. Or rather, until she’s safely through it, having not seen any of it from the foil-topped safety of her foxhole. Slide Rapid is not only a breeze, it’s almost disappointing. The monster wave train, ugly holes and boiling eddies that characterize it at higher levels are nonexistent. I SUP through Slide Rapid with a kid on the bow of my board. Never one to take chances, Nino crouches in her foxhole. We camp one night on a sandbar that we come to think of as “the stinky spot,” owing to the cloying smell of rotting meat that announces its presence only after we have unloaded all the rafts and set up the tents. Pack up and look for a better site downstream? Not a chance. Even the small rattlesnake we find coiled on a rock near the groover (a 5-gallon military surplus ammunition box outfitted with a toilet seat) can’t persuade us to leave a site once we’ve moved in. Near Cooper’s Ferry we visit an active archaeological site. A crew from the University of Oregon carefully excavates a Nez Perce summer camp and painstakingly sifts through the dirt, seeking artifacts that shed light on the culture and practices of these migratory people. I think of our conversations along the river after dinner, listening to the water’s whispers, as we sift

through the stories of our family and friends and discover each other anew. Four days into the trip the skies blacken and we see the first flash of lightning. Pulling over to a sandy beach, we set out lunch and wait for the storm to pass. Pass it does, but only after a menacing round of thunder and lightning and about 30 minutes of driving rain, with raindrops so big they hurt when they hit. Two people take shelter under the lunch table, another dozen huddle under three sun umbrellas, trying in vain not to touch the central metal pole, and the stragglers hold the largest SUP over their heads, the way you see street vendors in the Third World hunched under sheaves of newspaper during the monsoon season. “Ah well, those morons got hit because they didn’t seek shelter during storms,” however, we think, trying to convince ourselves that our flimsy patio umbrellas constitute “shelter.” Such storms usually scare the but crap out of me, and although I am able to maintain bowel control during that one, two of my nieces and nephews aren’t so lucky. My brother’s kids can’t wait, so Zack has to unstrap one of the groovers from the raft and carry it up to the sodden beach so his kids can answer nature’s call amidst what is most likely the biggest thunderstorm of their lives. After 53 miles, the Salmon empties into the Snake River, which has more volume and more people. A typical weekend brings fleets of jet boats and weekend partiers roaring up and down the river, the sounds of their motors and music masking the trills of the canyon wrens we heard upstream. The storm seems to have kept the usual crowds away, however, and we are able to find a beach to camp on.

THE SKIES GLOW AFTER A STORM.
IT’S NOT A CAMPING TRIP WITHOUT S’MORES.
SUPING IS A FAMILY AFFAIR.
“ W hen the storm passes,
Although we have to excavate a flat site in the sand for one of the tents, the effort is well worth it since we soon learn from the little girls on the trip that the Mossy Step Café is open for business. The café, which soon becomes renowned for its precarious location high on a slick moss-coated ledge and its aggressive sales tactics, offers an inventive menu of Yucca Poundcake, Slide Rapid Sliders, and Stickleberry Cupcakes. The 8-year-old girls run the café’s kitchen, while waitressing is handled by the 5-year-olds. When we tire (all too quickly for the café staff’s tastes) of the mind-numbing cycle of ordering and then pretending to taste a sand cake decorated with willow leaves we wander back to our camp, stuffed full of the contentment that comes from watching kids use their imaginations. On our final night, we once again seek refuge under our inadequate shelters, as lightning dances on the ridgetops directly above us. The wind is so fierce that it threatens to lift our pop-up kitchen tent into the air, despite the big rocks anchoring it. We grab the tent to keep it from flying away as bright bolts of electricity that look as if they could have been created by the Disney special effects department somehow avoid striking the 8-foot lightning rods we’re grasping. When the storm passes, the light is golden and almost electric, casting the dry hills above us in an otherworldly glow under a still-black sky. Our chests are tight—with relief, yes, but also with sentiment. I’ve had other moments like this before: on glassy lakes in northern Maine, in high meadows watching alpenglow blush and then fade, under velvety desert skies looking up at a carpet of stars. Always during the hush of sunset. At such moments I’ve felt an almost nostalgic ache as I wonder if life will ever be so beautiful again. Nights like this one remind me that yes, it will be, and it is. The deluge has been long and prolific. Water begins to pool on the parched earth around us. Rivulets form and trickle down to nearby gullies, turning dry drainages into muddy streams, which surge down to the river carrying debris. Overnight, the water level rises by 1000cfs. Nothing dangerous, hardly even noticeable to the naked eye. But the river is now far more full than it was when we launched a week ago; it is completely replenished. And so, it turns out, are we.

RICH WITH RIGOROUS training and travel, competition and adventure, the life of the modern professional athlete is a whirlwind of activity. For Naish team riders Casper Steinfath and Manca Notar, this lifestyle is becoming quite familiar. Currently wrapping up filming for his upcoming documentary, Casper travels the world racing in elite competitions such as the SUP World Series and the European Cup. Finishing her last year of high school, Manca maintains her studies while keeping a strict training regimen and competing in SUP competitions throughout Europe. Their most recent adventure brought them to explore the waters around northern Italy. What initially began as a trip to fine-tune technique and test out the latest Naish gear turned into something far more significant for the two athletes. Though they knew they would enjoy the beauty the landscape, they didn’t anticipate being so captivated by the character of this locale. There is something special about this place that compels one to slow down and attain greater perspective on life. Its Mediterranean approach and its landscape almost beckon you to take on the dolce far niente Italian way of life: “sweet idleness,” or “deliciousness of doing nothing.” Despite local guidebooks’ attempts to outline the region, there are still a few uncharted areas left for the adventurous traveler to discover. Naish product designer Michi Schweiger and photographer Ronny Kiaulehn knew the area well and proved to be the perfect tour guides. The first stop for Casper and Manca to try out their new touring boards was just north of Lago di Garda on a little lake named Lago di Loppio. This lake was
an unusual choice, as it is typically very small and shallow. During spring, however, snowmelt leads to heavy stream flow and causes the lake to transform into a deep, dark body of water, swallowing the surrounding trees into a sunken forest. Absent of civilization, Casper describes the surrounding scene as a ghost forest with a strange ambience. The only challenge was getting into the water due to the knee-high mud barrier surrounding the shoreline. Eventually finding a path, they took to the water on their Naish Odysseus boards and began crossing through the misty, mosquito-infested woods ahead. Paddling through floating heaps of wispy sticks and gnarled branches, the pair eventually came upon a clearing that gave way to mountains of lush greenery. As Manca describes, “It was beautiful to see all the reflections and shadows in the water, which was completely calm. I felt like I was somewhere in a tropical forest.” Looking up at the mountains above, they marveled at the subject of tales from long ago.
After paddling on Lago di Loppio, it was time to face the busy crowds again. Michi insisted the group visit Shaka Surf Center at the Conca d’Oro. Just outside Torbole, it is the mecca of windsurfing on this part of the lake. Home to many sailing regattas, it is also the best place to refuel before heading into an afternoon paddle session. Though Michi insisted that pasta should be the “fuel” of choice at this locale, the dedicated athletes settled on salads instead. Michi also insisted Casper try their beer; he did not take much convincing. The view from Conca d’Oro was of a windy lake, which prompted conversation about how the wind works on Lake Garda. Michi explained that the difference in pressure between the north and south causes thermal winds to blow from the north in the morning, petering off at midday and accelerating in the opposite direction from the south in the afternoon. These winds are known as the Pelar and Ora winds, and they essentially allow you to spend a whole day on the water — catching glides from one end to the other in the morning; having lunch at one of the little towns on the way; and then heading back downwind again when the wind turns. Being pioneers in the sport, Manca and Casper quickly realized that the unique wind situation at the lake would allow them to spend the day doing downwinders without ever needing a car. Unfortunately for the two athletes, there was another lake on the agenda for the day and it did not include racing across Lake Garda. From lunch they drove to another little lake, Lago di Tenno. Sitting even higher up in the mountains northwest of Lago di Garda, its
milky, turquoise waters exude a somewhat Caribbean flair until you realize that the water temperature is more glacial than tropical. The lake, surrounded by dense forest, is only reachable by foot. Luckily, Ronny knew a secret pathway to avoid the steep stairway leading to the lake. Once they reached the shore and started paddling they heard a deep rumbling. Behind them was an enormous black cloud heading straight in their direction. According to locals, it’s not that rare for thunderstorms to frequent the area without a moment’s notice. Casper found it very humbling to experience a real thunderstorm of that magnitude. Its scale was so immense that he and Manca had to rush back to shore to wait out the downpour. The cloud drifted away as quickly as it came, leaving the air fresh and the lake completely still. They couldn’t believe how smooth the water was. Every glide of their paddle was met with what seemed like no resistance as they flew above the crystal-clear blue. Absorbed by the beauty and the stillness of their surroundings, their minds began to wander. They were filled with a sense of true satisfaction. At that moment they both realized they were exactly where they wanted to be and doing exactly what they loved to do, a feeling they might not have achieved if not for the benefits of the dolce far niente way of life. The next spring day on Lake Garda was unusually glassy without a cloud in the sky. The plan was to take the Javelin racing boards (the ones they use on the world tour) across the lake from the eastern town of Malcesine and pass through the town of Limone on the opposite end of the lake. Malcesine sits right under the 2,218-meter-high snowcapped peak
CAUGHT UP IN FRIENDLY COMPETITION, MANCA AND CASPER RACE ON THEIR NAISH JAVELINS PAST CASTELLO SCALIGERO ON L AGO DI GARDA.
of Monte Baldo and is home to the historical Castello Scaligero, which hosts the famous Red Bull cliff-diving event. Paddling out of the shadow of Monte Baldo, they began to see the town of Limone, where the people are known for their distinctive longevity and their remarkable talent at growing lemons. Flawless lemon trees grace the shoreline, emanating the scent of flowers in full bloom. Primarily reachable by boat, many tourists frequent the area by watercraft, giving Casper and Manca the perfect opportunity to catch glides off the boats’ wakes along the way. Pushed by some friendly competition and banter, they blasted past historic buildings and cafes along the coast, racing each other the whole way. The pair was amazed by the architecture, feeling as though they were going back in time to the Renaissance. After surveying the townscape, they hitched a ride on a tourist boat back to their car on the other side of the lake.
“... they were exactly where they wanted to be and doing exactly what they loved to do, a feeling they might not have achieved if not for the benefits of the dolce far niente way of life.” By the end of their trip, reflecting on their experiences, they agreed that they were getting used to this dolce far niente life. It opened their eyes to the idea that Europe still has magical places to be found; captivated by Lake Garda and its surrounding lakes, both intend to return. Besides the opportunity to take in the breathtaking beauty of this ancient destination, they felt rejuvenated and relaxed. In the racing world, sometimes the most important thing is to get out there and paddle. They could finally understand why Michi and Ronny hold Lake Garda as the ideal spot to do just that.
