TRULY LOVING EVERY MINUTE
There is a new generation of women taking to the water, budding from families who have not been steeped in the tradition of “waterman” or “waterwomen” lifestyle. Making the discovery of strength, soul and the powerful connection they find on the water. Truly loving every minute they spend there. At fourteen Annie Reickert embodies that and in contagious fashion influenced her family to get on the water as well. This is on the south shore of Maui, a favorite place whether it be dawn or sunset to build relationships with the water, family and friends. PHOTO: FRANKIE BEES, FRANKIEBEES.COM

SPIRITUALLY CONNECTED I’VE BEEN IN AND ON THE WATER FOR OVER 45 years of my life. In business, recreation and health, it has always been there as a connection and has taught me most of life’s lessons and the most valuable experiences on this planet. During my early teens, I learned to catch my first wave and falling from my board; I came up laughing. I knew I was going to build my confidence and learn to ride bigger waves in life and not necessarily on the water. The reality is there is always challenging life experiences, daily obstacles, and fears. Knowing this outlook helped build my confidence, showing me the way to a calming and inner peace. Ten years ago, I learned to down-wind the ocean currents and asked a veteran to teach me how to ride the open waters. His sage counsel was, “Go out and learn on your own, at some point you’ll understand it.” I did; teaching myself to read lines on the water, understanding the flow, the patterns, and various personalities, which make up Her beauty. Sometimes smooth and flowing, other times forceful and demanding, yet always beautiful, natural, big, blue and full of life. Regardless of the body of water, I feel it. When I paddle a lake, I often close my eyes for 40-50 strokes, feeling my other senses open. Although subtle, I can feel the breath of even a gentle breeze. The sounds you hear are incredible while the instinctive smells of each lake differ along with the vibe of wise old Earth. Maybe it’s because, at the earliest focal point of our life, we were surrounded by water. Offering us the reminder that we can still feel spiritually connected. — REID INOUYE PUBLISHER, SAMATA MAG

GLUTE STRENGTHENERS BY ANN A LEVESQUE
I
PHOTOS: SCOTT MARTIN
THE FIRST TIME my PT/Yoga Therapist told me I had ‘sleepy’ glutes I didn’t believe her. How was it possible that a paddling athlete/Yoga teacher like me who SUPs, kayaks, hikes, mountain bikes and practices Yoga on a regular basis could have weak glutes?
1
And anyway, I was in her office because I was experiencing excruciating pain in my IT band, not in my glutes. She explained to me (and I later did more research), that it is common for even the strongest athletes to have gluteus medius that don’t fire properly or don’t fire at all. Instead, a muscle called the tensor fascia latae (TFL) picks up the slack and, in turn, tightens the iliotibial band (IT) that runs down the side of the leg and acts as a stabilizer for the knee. When the TFL and IT band are overworked on a regular basis because the glutes aren’t doing their job, the IT band becomes tight, painful and inflamed. Since I was experiencing pain in my IT band I was rolling it out with a foam roller even though that felt painful too. I had assumed that the foam roller was the way to go. Unfortunately I didn’t realize that I was making the situation worse by over-stretching fascia that was already inflamed. In addition to the foam rolling I was also incorporating yoga poses like pigeon into my practice that were also exacerbating the problem. After only a week of incorporating glute strengtheners into my practice the pain in my IT band started to subside. I eliminated stretches like pigeon and focused on firing up my glutes instead of stretching them and I experienced a whole new world! I began practicing yoga while standing on my SUP with soft knees and an awareness of pressing down through my heels and big toes to activate the backs of my legs. I discovered a strength and stability that I had not experienced before. My paddling is more powerful and faster. There is no more pain during or after paddling and I feel stronger on and off my board. Here are a few of my favorite glute strengthening exercises/ poses that helped me heal my IT band and fire up my glutes for better paddle performance!
30 Samata I V3N2
1: Squats
Place your feet hip or sits bones distance apart. Squat keeping the knees over the ankles or keeping your shins ‘parallel’ and take your butt back (I tell my students to stick their butts out like they’re bootie dancing). Don’t focus on how low you go in your squat, but on keeping your shins straight so that your glutes fire. Press down through your heels to come back up and keep your big toes pressing in the ground the whole time. Do 10 repetitions at a time. As your glutes get stronger you can experiment with going lower.
2
2: Chair Pose
In the same vein as squats you can incorporate chair pose and chair twist into your practice with the same principles and positioning as the squats above. Hold the poses for five deep and easy breaths and as you get stronger work up to holding for one minute.
3
3: One-legged Bridge Pose Lifts
One of the best exercises for strengthening the glutes. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Extend your left leg up toward the ceiling. Press through your right heel and big toe to lift your hips up off the floor and then set your hips back down. Repeat 10 times on each side.

STEP AWAY FROM THE DUMBBELL And Swing With the Kettlebell BY C ASI RYNKOWSKI
I SEE THIS TOO OFTEN at the gym: folks robbing themselves of the great benefits of kettlebelIs by passing them up for dumbbells. Next to a rowing machine, kettlebells are one of the most valuable pieces of equipment in the gym. Once you understand why and how kettlebells work, you will get more out of each exercise than is possible with dumbbells alone. Kettlebell training can build power, strength, and endurance quickly. The key idea behind the kettlebell is to control a weight that is unbalanced. While a dumbbell has the weight distributed evenly on either end of a handle, a kettlebell has a sphere-like shape with the handle at the top - this constantly throws you off balance during movement. All of this is beneficial to a paddler who is trying to create power while moving about on an unstable surface like a stand-up paddleboard. Kettlebells train movement not muscles. Ever try to run and catch a bus while pushing a carriage and carrying heavy bags? Real-life movements are complicated, multi-dimensional, and often unpredictable so why the heck would you not train for it? KB training does just that. The placement of the handle on the kettlebell allows you to swing it forward, back, up and down. It essentially becomes an extension of your arm, providing you with a wide range of motion. Grip strength comes into play as well. You have to hold on for acceleration, ease up for deceleration and adjust your grip during complicated movement patterns. Being able to leverage your grip while paddling is important. Over-gripping can cause elbow and shoulder injuries, not to mention waste energy Kettlebell workouts are calorie incinerators. They work both your aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. It’s strength training and cardio combined. A KB workout can burn up to 20 calories a minute, which equals 1200 calories per hour. The average weight training session burns between 180 to 300 calories an hour. Kettlebells are also a great way to build strength without bulk. This makes KB a no-brainer crosstraining choice for paddling. It’s a solid form of interval training which is essential for SUP racing or paddling in challenging conditions. Kettlebell exercises are truly unique. Movements are split into categories: ballistic, grinds, and hybrids. Ballistic movements are multi-joint movements that are explosive and dynamic in nature like the kettlebell swing and snatch. Acceleration and deceleration are part of the movement pattern. These movements also tax the cardiovascular system.

Grinds are performed slowly, in a controlled manner. They force you to maintain tension when transitioning weights between various muscle groups - the Turkish getup is an excellent example. Hybrid movements are a combination of both. All three styles have big benefits for a paddler. Most importantly, they connect your hands to your feet. These movements create stability, strength, and power through your core, working it in ways you may not be used to. This connection is an essential requirement for paddling. Your feet and legs are used to create drive on the board while you are leveraging power with your paddle on the water. The connection is your core. Nothing trains this chain as well as kettlebells. You won’t be able to gain these connection benefits by lying on a weight bench, sitting on a spin bike, or doing isolated muscle exercises. Training smart will allow you to take your paddling performance to the next level. Don’t just pick up equipment and go through the motions: be smart, seek knowledge. Kettlebells are a unique training tool for any fitness level and will provide you with incredible results.

REGIONALLY SPEAKING, you may or may not be on your SUP right now. Mid-winter blues don’t have to keep you from training for SUP or SUPYoga. Check out these short series of challenging compound exercises that target balance, coordination, core, hamstrings, quads, feet, toes, ankles, calves, IT band, glutes, piriformis, low back and abdominals! Start with your paddle overhead and arms wide. Inhale and slowly (you may have to widen your grip) lower the paddle behind you all the way to your low back. Lift it back up on an exhale and drop it in front of your hips. Repeat this sweeping motion with your breath a few times to warm up your shoulders and rotators. You can also try these modifications: 1) Try not to move your hands wider, getting deeper into your rhomboids and chest. 2) Shorten the distance in your grip and when you hit the maximum stretch hold and breathe deep right in that sweet spot! pic 2
Drape your arms over the paddle hangman style. Standing strong in your legs rotate your torso and look to your right. Inhale as deeply as you can and on the exhale, rotate further, deeper in the same direction. HOLD. Take another deep inhale and notice how much further you can rotate on the exhale: same direction! Do this a third time and you should be at your max torso rotation. Play with it a little, and then try it going to the left. pic 3 Standing Pigeon (RAJAKAPOTASANA)
For most yogi’s, pigeon pose is one of the most popular poses, especially for athletes. Most everyone loves the yin version - seated or supine on your mat. This version is a more dynamic muscular standing stretch that targets your thighs, groin, and piriformis muscles. Stand on a sandy beach in the Caribbean or wherever you are! Plant your paddle two feet out, or arms’ distance in front of you. Get balanced on your right leg and take your left leg to a figure 4 on top of your left. Your left ankle should be on top of your right knee. Sit back, using the paddle for balance as if you were going to sit down in a chair. Go as low as you can, focus on 34 Samata I V3N2
your lower belly drawing in. With full core engagement you’ll be supporting your lower back and strengthening your balance at the same time. Try and stay here or inch a little lower with each breath. Ten breaths should be your goal. pic 4
I like to do this twice on each side. The second time I’m fairly warmed up and just one hand on the paddle, the other hand I interlace in between my toes to keep my feet and knuckles juiced up with circulation and ready to SUP! EAT YOUR GREENS — FOR THEY ARE GOLD! BY SCOTT ES TRADA
MOST OF US have that small voice in our memory of our mom telling us to “eat your vegetables!” For me that meant iceberg lettuce, a can of green beans or corn and some carrot sticks growing up - not exactly hitting the mark. It wasn’t until years later after shedding my sugar addiction, coming off huge amounts of commercial dairy and processed/fast foods did my palate shift where I could actually appreciate the flavors of fresh veggies, mainly green leafy ones where I wanted them in my daily intake and could connect the dots to health, balance and longevity. The simplicity, wisdom and importance of eating green leafy veggies today must be a foundational piece of our intake if we are to feel, look and perform our best. When we look at our common diet of acid-forming animal protein, processed grains, stripped down oils/fats, and starchy, glucose-forming foods with minimal leafy greens it adds massive stress to the system struggling to maintain balance with little to work with.
The reason green leafy veggies are so important is because they are so often overlooked and undervalued for the nutritional powerhouses they are and the balance they create since we don’t really understand what they bring to the table in terms of deeply nourishing, consistent sources of alkalizing minerals like calcium & magnesium, rich sources of fiber, contain many antiinflammation/anti-stress elements and are a great source of sun power in the form of chlorophyll! I call chlorophyll the “blood of plants”, since it’s centered around the molecule magnesium which runs, among other things, our heart! Our own blood (hemoglobin) is centered around the iron molecule; this is the main difference of the two fluids. Chlorophyll is a blood-builder and one of our greatest healers. Through the magic of photosynthesis, chlorophyll absorbs the vibrant sun energy and transforms it into raw plant energy that is transferred directly to us when we eat these green veggies/ leaves. Sun energy turns to blood energy — supporting the whole cardiovascular system. All the components to rebuild, reconstruct, detoxify, cleanse, and thrive are present in green plant food. Of all the 22 amino-acids found in the body, eight must be derived from food/bacteria; the other 14 can be recycled and made by our body and it’s inherent wisdom. These eight essential amino-acids can all be found in plant foods, especially green leafy veggies and superfoods. Green leafy veggies being rich sources of iron can reverse anemic conditions — dandelion, parsley and spinach are all great sources. The other alkalizing,

balancing minerals like calcium and magnesium will buffer the acidforming elements from animal meats, nuts, seeds and grains. This is why it’s best to combine green leafy veggies with animal protein if you eat meat; or nuts, seeds and grains if you’re vegetarian/ vegan. Your digestive system will thank you! These same balancing minerals aid in helping the liver clean itself by binding to heavy metals and chemical residues that the body will turn into salts excreted through our urine. The fresh juicing movement that has mushroomed over the last 10 years is a clear sign of people looking for efficient ways to get their greens in. Blending green smoothies or drinking freshpressed juices are simple solutions to help upgrade the amount of leafy green nutrients we intake. Try to source organic produce where you can or better yet grow your own herbs/greens and connect back to the soil.
The key is to try and mix up your intake of greens so you can access all the variety of nutrients across the board rather than only eat the same one or two varieties all the time. Daily salads are a great habit to deliver a variety of these greens as are blended green smoothies and fresh green juices. Try using a collard green leaf as your new “bread or tortilla” to make a wrap or sandwich as a simple way to get in more greens. Hit the farmers markets in your area for the freshest, most local greens. Experiment and try new varieties. Greens are the new Gold!

The World of SurfSkins — A Product of SlipIns
SLIPINS IS A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COMPANY offering fashionable, functional apparel for active women doing both watersports and landbased exercise. SurfSkins are a product of SlipIns, a company that was mothered into invention in late 2013 by Robin Chesnie and Rick Rickman. Robin has been an active Gym Rat for over 30 years, and her son grew up surfing as his way of life. Rick took up surfing as a result of wanting to photograph the sport, and it has become a core part of his being. Rick and Robin met through an online dating service in 2013, and just like chocolate falling into peanut butter, the alchemy of Robin’s exercise background and Rick’s surfing passions evolved into the start of SlipIns. Rick of course wanted to share his love of surfing with Robin, but in the chilly Southern California waters, Robin needed to wear a wetsuit always. The process of getting in and out brought her to tears and she almost quit. Then the epiphany: “I think we can come up with a product that will make it much easier for women to get in

and out of these unflattering wetsuits.” Shortly after that, SlipIns SurfSkins were born. They were a hit and there was a lot less mad dancing and more smiles from women surfers and divers along the California coast. Easy in/easy out. That is what SurfSkins are all about, a bodysuit worn under a wetsuit or by itself in warmer waters. SurfSkins allow you easy on, easy off with that wetsuit, with no hassles or discomfort. The big bonus was that the 60+ SPF sun protection in the fabrics made wearing them without a wetsuit probably the greatest benefit one could ask for when on the water! Wetsuits. You love them. You hate them. When the surf is pumping and the sun is rising/setting and you don’t want to miss it, you want to slip into all that neoprene quickly with no fuss, no muss, no hassle, no mad dance that looks like you’re being attacked by hornets or have just gone plumb loco. And when you’re cruising/training/surf
session is through, you want to get out of that wetsuit AFAP, get yourself under a fresh water and/or hot shower, then sit down and eat something. Finally something to make that experience much easier, less horrific. No more sausage squeezing into that casing. Admit it: Not fun, or pretty! These are the days of miracles and wonders, when modern science has rolled out fabrics that are as durable and flexible as they are stylish and protective. SlipIns fully embraces these technologies. “SurfSkins are made of a nylon/spandex blend,” said Robin Chesnie. “We feel like we have something for most women and certainly for the ones who cherish looking good. Our one piece designs are guaranteed to stay in place no matter how strenuous the exercise or how hard the surf might work you over. Our products are guaranteed to give the confidence of never having an equipment malfunction regardless of how angry the surf might get. The Minis V3N2

also allow each individual to choose how conservative or alluring to be in the water or on the beach with our soft zippered front. “We’re kind of like bathing suit material,” says Chesnie. “Or, maybe like a full-body rash guard. We sourced fabric that has 60 + SPF sun protection so that when you don’t have to wear that pesky wetsuit you can still get amazing sun protection. This is why surfers, stand up paddlers, divers and women engaged in any outdoor or water-related exercise love our stylish SlipIns. We are now making our own exclusively-designed fabric prints.” “Rick Rickman uses his photographic experience and amazing creativity to produce our fabulous patterns and styles,” says Robin Chesnie. “We are producing looks that no-one else has and we will continue this going forward because this makes our product so distinctive. “The stand-up paddlers discovered these colorful fun SurfSkins and Minis with that amazing 60+spf and immediately realized the advantages. The water sports enthusiasts know the harsh affects of the sun, and to have something that can provide our level of sun protection is an enormous advantage. Our other advantages, quick drying, complete comfort, and fabulous colors and designs are the perfect melding of form, fit, function and FUN.
GymSkins, and the Leggings and Crop Tops. “The SurfSkin Mini is a sexy, high-cut legless version of the full SurfSkins, with a front zipper,” said Robin. At SlipIns, fashion does not follow function. The two concepts are equally designed to make women look and feel beautiful. “Our products and styles are designed to specifically fit the woman’s figure,” Robin said. “Most of our styles are figure-flattering and body contouring.” Rickman adds: “Since we have begun to design our water wear, women are now beginning to demand products designed for them and their interests. We feel this is a real benefit and SlipIns is continuing to lead the way in fashion and function. There are great women athletes and active women in the world, and we feel they should be able to find water wear that caters to their strength and beauty.” SlipIns Mantra is: ‘Look as Good as You Feel!’ And they are all about making sure women reach that goal!
Of all the product styles offered by SlipIns, the SUP and/or Yoga crowd have embraced the SurfSkin Minis, the one-piece

IBALLA MORENO CAME FROM A MODEST FAMILY. Her Dad was the only one who worked to feed the eight people in her family, five kids, her parents and grandmother. She remembers going fishing every weekend to fill up the fridge for the winter. With two sisters and two brothers it is her sister Daida and herself that have made their passion the ocean. All of them relate to the sea somehow as they live in a little beach town called Pozo Izquierdo in the island of Gran Canaria. But this is where her story shifts.
pioneers of the sport of stand-up paddling in the Canary Islands - Stephane Etienne and Nicole Baronet started doing SUP around 2007 - let me use their boards,” Iballa tells us. It was a challenge that got her hooked. The board she first tried was small, an 8’5” which increased the difficulty. “I was falling all the time,” Iballa said. But once she was on the wave, she was having so much fun. “I used SUP only when conditions weren’t that ideal for surfing until I got so hooked in I even go no matter what the conditions are.”
Iballa Moreno is in every way an athlete. She and her twin sister Daida are dominating the world of windsurfing. Both sisters began competing in 1997 (only a few events), and 1999 was the first year they did the complete tour. Both have accomplished 25 World Titles, and though windsurfing is important to both of them - they have a tour organized by PWA (the Professional Windsurfing Association) Iballa has branched out into the world of stand-up paddling.
First sponsored by the Starboard windsurfing team, she also migrated onto the Starboard SUP team as of five years to date. She recalls hearing how Laird Hamilton said he started standup paddling because it made his legs strong for surfing Jaws. “Laird was a windsurfer back in the day which was something I could relate to, so I started stand-up paddling as a combination of my training for windsurfing.” She finds it helps with balance and core strength.
From an early age, Iballa has always felt the call of the water. She began bodyboarding, then surfing, evolving next to windsurfing. When there was no wind, she was always surfing. Then she tried SUP, “It was a small day and my friends and
Although she started stand-up paddling on Fuerteventura, SUP wasn’t seen at the surfing spots but as it continues to grow she does have spots to SUP, with respect to the local surfing community.

And because of her naturally competitive nature, she craves the Standup World Tour, doing Spanish national events, and going to the ISA World Championships with the Spanish team and the National Surfing Federation. Her first time in a significant event was the ISA Worlds, which happened in Peru. She was the Spanish Surf Champion in 2014, second at the Abu Dhabi All Star Stand Up World Tour, Bronze Medalist at the ISA World Championships 2013 and 2015, and European SUP Surfing Champion several times. And if you don’t find her on the water with her SUP you’ll find her windsurfing: “SUP helps my windsurfing and also the other way around,” Iballa says. “With SUP I found an excuse to never leave the water. When there is wind I go windsurfing and when there is no wind I go SUP!”

Iballa: Being in the water makes me happy. I´ve been through some hard times in life with the unexpected loss of our mother when we turned 25 years old and we were far away from home, then my twin sister went through a cancer that luckily everything went well and she is healthy again, our dad has also been going through several operations ... I discover somehow that being in the water and SUP surfing in challenging conditions makes me feel alive and happy again. There are days I spend more than 6 hours a day in the water and at night I sleep with a smile in my face and looking forward to the next day, this really helps me avoid negativity, this way and always helps me to live life at the fullest.

Traveling to many parts of the world has had a profound impact on her growth as a person and a woman. But to everything, there is a season and eight years ago she made the decision to move back to her original home in Northern Michigan - motivated by the desire to be close to her roots, her family and a wonderful community and a place to raise a family. She is not a woman of hype and sometimes people don’t take her seriously because of the model attachment to her. She is grounded and real. Her four children are her greatest accomplishments. She has long been a lover of fashion, fitness, pure food and all things healthy and now has added stand-up paddleboarding to her list. When I asked about how did she find her way into stand-up paddling, her response was, “I didn’t, it found me. SUP saved me. Six years ago I was about the furthest thing away from being a SUP racing mom.” Injured from running and about to become pregnant with twins she was desperate to add something low-impact, but challenging, to her fitness routine: “My friend Stephanie Myers asked me to meet her in the water,” Jala said. And that was that. Jala’s hometown of Traverse City, Michigan sits on the edge of Lake Michigan and connects to an endless system of inland lakes and rivers. “We are a stone’s throw to all kinds of beautiful water,” Jala said. “SUP was

taking off here, and so I took the plunge.” She was quickly hooked. Before long Jala realized the significant mental and physical benefits she felt from paddling. “That’s the beauty of SUP,” she says. Soon, just cruising around wasn’t enough; she wanted to go harder and faster. Jala started entering races purely to push herself. “I have never really been competitive with others, but felt the need to improve continuously while becoming a member of a wider community.” Each time she raced, she grew stronger mentally. One time, in particular, stands out as a true test. She had entered an 11-mile downwinder race - The TC Waterman Event - and the weather was terrible. There was a threehour storm delay, and as soon as the thunder and rain stopped, they took off. “The wind was all from the west, not the south wind we had hoped for. Wind gusts topped speeds of 18-20 knots the entire way; white caps were cresting up to seven feet high! Paddling only on the right side was killing my shoulders; everywhere I looked people were falling off their boards. By mile eight I was in so much pain I started crying. All I wanted to do was lie down and let the waves carry me to shore, but my four kids were at the end waiting for me.
One thing I tell my children all the time is to never give up. I couldn’t be a hypocrite, so I dug deep. As I turned the corner for the final stretch, I could hear them cheering for me. To see my sweet, silly kids all jumping up and down, yelling, ‘You did it Mom!’ took all my pain away — momentarily at least.

That race taught me many things but most of all that we are much stronger than we allow ourselves to be. There was – and still is – so much for me to learn. The paddle surf community is unique in that people are eager to give you tips and share new techniques. I love the shared passion in this tight-knit, driven group!” Jala kept racing and improving. The realization that she needed a major equipment upgrade was on the horizon and this past summer she got a 12”6’ x 27’ BIC Tracer race board, which led to her signing on to the BIC SUP Team as an athlete/ambassador. Since then, it’s been game on! Any chance Jala gets to learn about something new that will help her be a better paddler - she’s all over it. She loves it when the pros she races with, want to show her techniques to work on so she can paddle faster and be more productive with her stroke. It’s very inspiring. In turn, she wants to inspire others to discover that connection on the water and how it can strengthen a person in so many ways. Jala is currently planning on getting ACA certified this spring. “Safety is number one for me as I have four kids to take care of!”

Juggling four kids with her modeling, fitness and SUP professions means preparation is the only thing that keeps her sane. Every day is a learning experience, but laying out kids’ clothes, making the lunches the night before and whatever else needs to be done the night before. Jala knows how to plan and that helps her function like a well-oiled machine and focusing attention on what’s ahead, she has been able to carve out time for fitness and career needs. There are many times she feels stretched to the limits. And moments that are more trying than others. “The choice is to laugh or cry on days when you have sick kids, a broken car, no milk and no bread - all during a snowstorm. And that, my friends, is only Monday!” she shares. Although she doesn’t look like it, Jala readily admits that staying in shape isn’t easy. “I have plenty of excuses not to work out or get on the water - legit ones at that. Creating a routine and sticking to it has been the only way for me. Skipping part of my routine happens less and less as it’s drilled into my head day-to-day.

In a typical week, I’ll shoot for 60 minutes of cardio, three days a week (running or paddling), Modus 45 strength training, along with nightly muscle/core work. This could be 250-600 crunches on the ball, 60 pushups, etc. all after the kids are in bed. I like to keep my weekends variable – biking/hiking with the family, or running with my kids as they get older. I also throw in swimming at the YMCA or the beach in the summer.” Jala believes in this fitness format so much that she and her friend Sara Hunt have started a group called MI FIT FAMS on Facebook, encouraging women and families to be active. Women can meet up for running, group paddling, being involved more in the community.

When Jala is not gardening, cooking and caring for her kids, you can find her running, doing Modus 45 or paddleboarding with friends until Lake Michigan freezes over. Until the ice melts, Jala continues with a combination of Modus45, where she is a fitness instructor (modus45.com), yoga, and HIIT running for cardio and weights. She also is thrilled to incorporate Karma Suptra in her training: it’s the perfect complement to everything she does. Karma SUPtra is a program thoughtfully created in an effort to make SUP-Yoga a more accessible practice, by introducing indoor boards that emulate the outdoor water experience. The Karma
SUPtra board is lightweight and supported by a series of inflatable cushions, which serve to increase or decrease the stability and the challenge of the board. As she reflects on the past five years, Jala explains how stand-up paddling has influenced her life: “In the five years since I’ve picked up SUP, nothing has been more important than the mind, body, and spirit challenge that’s come along with it. By overcoming paddle racing’s highs and lows, I know I can do anything I set my mind to from raising my four beautiful children and inspiring them. It’s a beautiful thing.”

NOW 23 YEARS OLD, Maui resident Talia Decoite has been in the water all her life, and stand-up paddling for the past nine years. A talented water athlete, Talia has overcome health obstacles, self doubt and living in Sherman Oaks for an entire summer to become one of Maui’s most accomplished female waterpeople. The daughter of an accomplished Maui paddler, Talia has accomplished a lot at only 23: At 14 she became the first woman to prone paddle across the Kai’wi Channel — the Channel of Bones — and then she did it in an OC1. In 2012 she won the Unlimited Women’s SUP division of the Molokai to Oahu race, and set a record of 4:55 that still stands. Talia believes that, at 23, she is just entering her prime as an athlete. She is young but her story is already long, full of triumphs and challenges, good times and bad times, dedicated training and health obstacles. What has not killed her determination has made her stronger. It helps that Talia was born and raised on Maui, a Hawaiian Island that produces significant ocean athletes: “Maui is the perfect breeding ground for watermen and women,” Talia said. “Ever since I can remember, the ocean has

been a part of my life. My dad had me on the front of his board by 15 months old. As a little girl my dream was to be an all-around water woman — the female version of Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama. I wanted to tow into big waves, windsurf, paddle canoes, longboard, shortboard and SUP — anything on the water, and Maui was the place to do it. I lived five minutes from Ho’okipa, which is one of the spots where I learned how to surf.” She first tried stand-up paddling in 2001, at the age of nine: “I loved it because SUP combines two of my favorite water sports: surfing and paddling.” She remembers standing at the finish line of an M2O race waiting for her father to cross, and watching the first woman to finish: “I was thinking, ‘Wow I want to be her one day.’” At age 14, Talia became the first woman of any age to cross the Kaiwi channel on a prone paddle board. Three years later, she competed in a relay team with Australian Jocelyn Kemp. She wanted to cross the channel on other watercraft, and teamed up with Lauren Spalding, an Olympian and 10-time M2O OC1 champion: “Lauren taught me all about technique, reading the ocean, and mental strength. Weekends we would paddle from Maliko Gulch all the way around Kahakuloa to the Napili Bay — or paddle Maui to Molokai to camp the night. Then the next morning paddle from Molokai to Oahu. So basically an 80 mile weekend.” By 2009 Talia had crossed the Kaiwi Channel prone paddling, OC-1 and six-man canoe and decided to try it on an SUP. She competed in the Second Annual Battle of the Paddle in Dana Point and traveled all through 2009 and 2010: “I fell in love with the sport and the community. I always had a desire to travel. I got to travel to places like Fiji, the Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico!” She skipped M2O in 2010 because all the travel didn’t give her time to train, and then in 2011, at 18 years old, she began training to SUP M2O solo: “That was an amazing year for me. I was growing in my relationship

with the Lord and during training time I would be praying and asking God for strength in those tough training sessions. When I felt weak, I would cry out and repeat: ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ I could feel his mighty power with every stroke making me stronger.” Powered by Christ and her training, in 2011 Talia competed in the Unlimited Female division of M2O and finished second place to Andrea Moller: “...which was amazing,” Talia said. “Better than I could have ever dreamed, seeing it was my first time solo. I was always happy with second place, I never thought I could beat someone so much older, stronger and with much more experience.” “Then the Lord brought the man of my dreams into my life,” Talia said. She began training with Nakoa Decoite, a professional big-wave surfer/physical trainer who was one of the first guys to paddle into waves at Peahi/Jaws. “To give a happy ending to a long story: We were friends for seven months, then in June 2012 started dating. In December 2012 we were engaged and married, February 22, 2013. “Not to sound cheesy, but this was a huge turning point for me and my performance. He helped me a lot with the sports psychology side of things. See when nineyear-old Talia told herself she wanted to win Molokai 2 Oahu, she put this idea in her brain that she would be in her late 20s or early 30s when she won that race. Nakoa was able to help me break that mental block and give me the idea of: “Why not now?” Even though it seemed so far fetched, Nakoa gave me confidence to achieve my dream.” Powered by God and her new husband, Talia competed in M2O in 2012, paddling solo in the Unlimited Female class on an SUP: “Around mile 25 I hit this mental wall that I couldn’t break through. Nakoa was in the support boat and he yelled: “He gave it all, so you give it all you have and leave it in the water.” In that moment I kicked

into gear. I started passing people, connecting and riding swells as long as I could - breaking down those walls one bump at a time.” TR AINING AT “A PA I A S E C R E T S P O T,” ACCORDING T O TA L I A .
Talia was the first to cross the finish line, breaking the previous record by 30 minutes and setting a record of 4:55 that still stands: “When they say, ‘Faith can move mountains,’ I sure felt like that happened in my own way,” Talia said. As the reigning M2O champion, Talia felt pressured by others to defend her title. That didn’t feel right: “When someone else puts a challenge on you it becomes an expectation and the motivation changes because it becomes about meeting their expectation and not my own. I started an intense training routine. The whole time it was a real struggle. I couldn’t find the joy that I always had with training.” And then her training came to an abrupt halt. While cutting a seed from an avocado, Talia cut her hand badly. Then her stomach began acting up, she suffered from kidney stones, and that lead her to the doctor, who told her she was suffering from candida yeast overgrowth, and was in no condition to race. “I had to go on a very strict diet. I officially cracked and broke down. I had to make the hardest decision and pull out of the race. I felt like a failure and mad at myself for not being able to handle it all.” Talia did her research, cutting all the gluten, dairy, soy and processed sugar from her diet: “I also had to be very careful with too much carbs. This diet is very hard as an athlete. Because you need carbs for fuel.” Two years after winning M2O, Talia had her health issues sorted out and felt determination return. In 2014, she finished fifth overall in the SUP Unlimited Female class: “Sonni Honscheid finished first, but my record from 2012 still held.” Talia and Nakoa spent eight months on the mainland in 2015. Nakoa working as a stuntman in the entertainment industry, Talia developing her jewelry business: “We were in L.A. to experience something completely outside of our comfort zone. I learned that struggle is not a bad thing. I am able to grow the most if I embrace it.” Talia has been through all that and is only 23. She has many years of training and competition ahead of her, and she is excited: “My focus is now on shorter course races. Long distance is too taxing on my body and immune system so my training looks a lot different. I’ve been focusing on flat water interval training. With Nakoa’s background in personal training along with my experience of paddling we have been able to put together a great training program. We plan on doing M2O together as a team! I am so excited about this, he has finally got the bug for SUP. We have a passion together for health and fitness and clean living. We want to share that with the world.”

I'M LOOKING AT AN IMAGE of a 14-year-old girl: sunny smile, flaxen blonde hair that has been kissed by sun and salt water, and brown eyes that speak volumes. This is Annie Reickert, and though I've defined her briefly by a description, it doesn't tell you WHO she is. Let me formally introduce you.

Annie Reickert: daughter of Chris and Melissa Reickert, sister to 12-year-old brother Miles, born and raised on Maui, Naish athlete and homeschooler. This young woman is disciplined, principled and focused. Those who know her well can testify that she has boundless energy, is quick to laugh, and never says a bad word about anyone. Her love and passion for the ocean have taken her life in a unique direction, and as her mother shares, these passions have impacted the entire family. “At the end of middle school, Annie had a plan. She asked if she could be homeschooled and compete on the Stand Up World Tour. Her dad and I hesitated at first, but when we considered it as a family, we decided it could work.” So Melissa, who was a school teacher, took a leave this past year to homeschool both Annie and her brother, and it’s ended up being an unforgettable year for all of them.
harbor for sprints and speed training. It’s another fun way to be on the water.” Annie only started racing last summer but has competed and finished well in some prestigious SUP races including the Olukai, Maui to Molokai, and the Pacific Paddle Games. She’s excited to cross the Ka'iwi channel in the iconic Molokai2Oahu race this July.
Before she was home-schooled, Annie attended the same school as Robbie Naish’s daughter. Naish is always on the lookout for local talent to add to the team, and he saw it in Annie. Being at home on the water and comfortable speaking to adults, Annie would chat with Robbie in the water on Maui’s North Shore. At a cross-country meet, Annie's mom and Robbie started talking. He was working on a line of SUP boards for kids and small adults. Annie got one, a 6’6 Keiki Hokua, and it was a great fit. Since then, Robbie Naish and Michi Schweiger have been enthusiastically supporting and encouraging her racing and surfing.
Annie is deeply passionate about being in and on the water. Living on Maui, the ocean was her playground before she could walk and she was riding on the front of her parent’s surfboards as soon as she could stand. That naturally developed to surfing on her own at about five years of age. Not only does she surf and stand-up but she loves to swim, snorkel, free dive, and body board. "I try to get in the water every day. Mom and Dad call me the grumpy mermaid when I’m out of the water too long,” she laughs.
It was the Naish connection that led her into racing: “I got one of Kai Lenny’s hand-me-down race boards and did one Maliko run and loved it. It’s so beautiful to be out on the ocean looking back at Maui. And when there are bumps - it’s like surfing a never-ending wave. The great thing about race boards is that if there are no waves, I can always go to the
Homeschooling has offered the family the flexibility to travel and allows Annie to compete in SUP events and races worldwide as the youngest Naish team rider. Most recently, Annie went to California, donned a wetsuit for the colder water temps, and took first in the highly competitive SUP surf women’s division at the Santa Cruz PaddleFest, held in March. I may not have mentioned it before, but Annie has only been competing for a year.
It's contagious. I'm thinking in the back of my mind when was the last time I got on the water and felt that? Three years ago, the family had a different kind of adventure that took them far from their island home. Annie’s father Chris, a software developer, was working on a project in New York City. “We didn’t want to be apart for an entire year, so we decided to join Dad in Manhattan. It was about

as different from our life on Maui as you could imagine. I rode the subway or public bus to school and traded in my surfboard for a skateboard. The city was exciting and fun, but I missed Maui every day. Sometimes, I’d walk along the Hudson River and imagine jumping on a SUP and just paddling home.” The family agrees that it was a one-of-a-kind experience, but all were happy to get back to Maui. Annie vowed never to live far from the warm water again! If there is one word to define Annie it would be passion. Maui waterman Kai Lenny says this, “Annie reminds me a lot of myself when I was growing up. She is super focused, loves any opportunity to be on the water, and her passion for what she does is incredible. The first few times I met her and saw her ride I could really tell that she had what it takes to be great.” And Annie is tireless in pursuing her passion. Unlike most 14-year-olds, Annie can be found getting up at roughly 5:30 most mornings to get on the water. Her parents, Melissa and Chris, are the ones to shuttle her to the ocean to surf or SUP surf at dawn. After her time on the water, you can find Annie back at home hitting the books. “I usually start school by 9:00 AM with a fun surf session under my belt. On good days, if I’ve gotten my schoolwork done, we’ll head back to surf in the afternoon. Partially, I’m motivated to do my best and excel as a way to say ‘thanks’ to Mom and Dad for all that they do for me,” Annie tells me.

Maui is home to some amazing watermen and women. Being surrounded by that energy keeps Annie inspired. “I've had some amazing role models like Kai Lenny, Robby Naish, Michi Schwieger, and Dave Kalama - that set the bar really high for what you can achieve on an SUP board. If I have learned anything from them, it is to follow your dreams. All of the experienced surfers I talk to have the same piece of advice: Do it for the love of it. Do it as long as you are having fun!" Dave Kalama commented, “What I really admire about Annie is her zest and passion for what she is doing. She has such a great attitude and enjoyment level that it's hard not to root for her.” Surfing with athletes like the ones mentioned and others of the same caliber inspires her to push her limits and try new things. This past year there have been plenty of big surf days on Maui, and when Annie might sometimes hesitate, all she needs is to see one of them in the lineup, giving her the extra courage to paddle out - despite it being double overhead! I asked Annie what her goals were in regards to her SUP pursuits. She answered quickly, “I want to do my best when I compete, in both surfing and racing. And one day, I want to surf Peahi (Jaws). This winter, I watched from the cliff during several big swells with waves close to 40 feet. And I just wanted to be out there!” When I asked her parents about this they agreed that it has been a dream of Annie’s to surf

big waves since she watched the Eddie Aikau when she was seven-years old. But they are clear that it will be years down the road before Annie tackles those giants. “She has the fearless spirit it takes to paddle into that type of wave. But it requires years of training, perseverance, and experience to be ready for those conditions,” her dad says. “I know I’m far from ready to watch her in that kind of lineup!” adds her mom. It is clear that Annie has found what she loves. There is a soulfulness to this 14-year old that comes from being connected to the ocean and the natural world. Many mornings, she paddles out to her favorite break that is primarily filled with surfers. The older guys in the lineup have come to appreciate and respect Annie, despite the fact that SUP is not always welcomed at this spot. She sits quietly among the old guard as the sun comes up over Haleakala and they all share the magic of the moment. No words need to be exchanged and it doesn’t matter that there are 50 years between them. They are all connected. “When I get off the water,” Annie shares, “I feel exhilarated, energized, like I’ve just done exactly what I was meant to do.” I asked Annie if she had any words of wisdom to share. She said, with a sparkle in her eyes, “Do what you love as much as you can, every day if possible!” With that advice, I’m going to grab my SUP and head out for a paddle at sun-up.
