It becomes a unified movement of support and connection underlined by the belief that we can make a difference. IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW YOUNG OR OLD YOU ARE — IF THE DESIRE IS THERE, THE POSSIBILIT Y IS THERE.
When you’re on the water, age is no longer a factor. It doesn’t matter how young or old you
are — if the desire is there, the possibility is there. It’s why we love seeing children making that connection on the water, and why our admiration grows when we see women from another generation doing the same. These inspiring women are living testimony — age doesn’t matter. Forty years ago, Jacky Godo Kiss left England for an active life in southern California’s South Bay. She has been practicing yoga for 15 years to maintain a strong, agile body and a calm and clear mind. After her son launched Olympus Board Shop, and introduced the sport of stand-up paddling to the area, Jacky was a quick convert. She now paddles every day and her favorite yoga studio is on the water. At the age of 76, Jacky is consistently the most senior SUP yogi on the water, but make no mistake, this is a woman who shows the youngsters how it’s done. She inspires fellow yoga students in her classes and all those who see her on the water, and she is a living symbol of the health benefits inherent to this lifestyle. Next time you’re in Redondo Beach, look for Jacky at Olympus SUP and join her for SUP yoga. www.olympussup.com www.beyondtheshore.com

REDUCING ESTROGEN DOMINANCE A Preventative Approach: Part 2 BY SCOTT ES TRADA
IN PART ONE OF THIS SERIES, printed in the last issue, I brought the condition of elevated estrogen or estrogen dominance (when estrogen outweighs progesterone) to the surface as a major contributor in unwanted symptoms and disease, including breast cancer. Now we’ll begin identifying what gives rise to this hormonal imbalance and how to steer clear of the pitfalls in a modern world. The first step in this protocol is to “stop the poisoning” or lighten the toxic load and the stress it places on your system. It’s no different than improving your food intake with cleaner, healthier choices — first, you must know what to stay away from and what to replace with options that aren’t antagonistic to the body. When it comes to breast health, there are three converging areas that contribute to disease: excess xeno-estrogen (foreign), heavy metals (metallo) and candida mycotoxins (fungal). If each of these circles were to overlap, the space they share in the middle would be breast cancer. Data shows they all are present to some degree when diseased
30 Samata I V1N2
breast tissue occurs. Diseased breast tissue is a repository for toxins, like a barometer of the surrounding environmental load. Dense with cellular receptors, the tissue will accept molecules with a carbon ring structure like those elements used in cosmetics, skin, body and hair care, plastics, pesticides, fertilizers, industrial compounds and thousands of other synthetic chemicals. Prior to the industrial revolution, this tissue was largely exposed to plant estrogen mimics only. That has changed. Today, estrogen mimics are everywhere. Heavy metals like mercury, aluminum and lead are three of the most dangerous estrogen mimics, acting like a daily IV drip of poison into our systems. Whether it’s tainted water, pesticides or the plastic tube of antiperspirant you apply daily, they all find a way in. Look at just about any popular brand of deodorant and you’ll find a cocktail of aluminum byproducts and petroleum compounds designed to stop the natural process of sweating under your arms by clogging pores oh so very close to
breast tissue. Is it really a surprise these toxins are found in diseased tissue? Many of these products might even carry a pink ribbon supporting a “cure.” Isn’t it time to connect the dots? The family of plastics stemming from petroleum byproducts has likewise taken over modern life as we know it. The most famous red flagged toxin, Bisphenol A or BPA — used in bottled water, canned goods, food containers, plastic bags and hundreds of other uses — has been around for decades. Scientists tried using this compound as a drug to prevent miscarriages about 80 years ago. It was unsuccessful but soon found its way into the manufacturing of many goods. Over time, BPA alters our cells by turning off tumor-resistant genes and turning on the tumor promoters instead. Even the BPS compound used in making the newer BPA-free water bottles is showing up as estrogenic — time to reach for glass or stainless steel for your water containers.
Even the BPS compound used in making the newer BPA-free water bottles is showing up as estrogenic — time to reach for glass or stainless steel for your water containers. Big agriculture using herbicides and pesticides in massive amounts means these toxins are finding their way in as well. One example, atrazine, fills our environment with over 70 million pounds per year. Researchers at Berkeley found that the gender-bending effects chemically castrated 75% of adult male frogs — a heavy metal estrogen mimic in action, and that’s from this compound alone. In humans, it takes needed progesterone and testosterone and converts them into an elevated estrogen level. This is the reality of living in a modern world filled with man-made compounds that have found a way into our bodies. Let’s not assume any longer that anyone is looking out for us, but rather become our own best health advocates. We have a choice — we can make better choices with every dollar we spend as a powerful vote to empower companies that align with progressive wisdom, or we can continue to support the status quo and watch the suffering multiply. Strive to live in balance, and stack the odds in your favor.
Progressive To Do List for Reducing Risk & Exposure to the Estrogenic Load 1. Get off all plastics. Take them out of your food and water supply to start. No bottled water (our oceans will love you), and stay ahead of the curve with no BPAfree bottles either. It’s only a matter of time before media and manufactures begin to pick this up. No plastic food containers and for sure no microwaving in them, which releases more of these toxic compounds into food. Switch to glass containers, stainless steel or ceramic products to store foods and liquids. 2. Take an inventory of all personal care products for heavy metals, petroleum byproducts and synthetic compounds. Skin, hair and body care are one of the biggest contributors of xeno-estrogens. Remember, over 80,000 chemicals are in our environment with a few hundred introduced every year — and only a handful have been banned. Look for this list of ingredients to avoid your personal care items. • Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea (formaldehyde-releasing preservatives) • Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Paraben • Petrolatum • Propylene Glycol • PVP/VA Copolymer • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate • Stearalkonium Chloride • Synthetic Colors (FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6.) • Parfum (a.k.a. fragrance) • PEG compounds • Triethanolamine • Triclosan 3. Consider the chemical use in all animals raised for food, including all the herbicides/pesticides used on their feed and heavy metals from antibiotics. Both get into their systems, as do all the chemicals they are exposed to in the time they live at commercial farms from the surrounding environment, including the water they drink. Spending the extra dollars on organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised animals will lessen your exposure and deliver better quality nutrition to you. Look at it this way — it will certainly be less than the cost of disease. 4. Growing your own garden or getting produce from local farmers’ markets and growers that don’t use chemicals on their plants and soil is a wise choice to limit exposure, increase nutrients and maybe get your hands in the soil as well. 5. Buy a good water filter and create your own drinking water for pennies on the dollar or find a natural spring in your area. Check www.findaspring.com. Both options are simple ways to reduce your risk of estrogenic compounds.
In the next issue, I’ll share a specific protocol of powerful elements that support breast health. Scott Estrada has more than 22 years in the health and wellness field. PL ANK IT OUT Stability Ball Knee Drive
BY C ASI RYNKOWKI • Photos by Rachel McCarty
THE PLANK IS ONE OF THE BEST core and full body exercises. From your neck to your toes, you engage every muscle to keep your body in position. Take that plank, put it on an unstable surface with added movement and you’ve created a super functional exercise that is perfect for SUP cross training. This exercise is called the stability ball knee drive. It’s harder than a plank and includes your hip flexors, all while honing your balance. Although this is an advanced exercise, it can easily be modified or broken down into stages for people at any fitness level. step 1
Begin in plank position against the stability ball. Your forearms should be centered on the ball and your weight distributed between your shoulders and balls of your feet. Choose a wide foot stance for more stability or bring your feet together for a balance challenge. Focus on keeping all of your muscle groups strong and engaged, and remember to maintain a neutral neck position with eyes gazing down. step 2
If you can hold this position for 30 seconds, you’re ready to start your knee drives. While maintaining a tight plank position, bring one knee towards the ball and then return it to its starting position. It’s important to keep your hips square with the floor throughout the entire knee drive movement. If you can’t maintain a strong plank for 30 seconds, work on extending your time in this position during each workout. step 3
Complete ten or more reps, or continue until failure. Repeat this movement with the opposite leg.

USTRASANA: CAMEL POSE
1
Beginner To Intermediate BY JULIE ROACH
THERE IS A FREEDOM, exhilaration and sense of empowerment that comes from mastering and even simply attempting certain poses on the water. Back bends can be challenging, so let’s break down this pose step by step. Only proceed as far as you feel comfortable. Remember to begin with a warm-up paddle to increase your heart rate and find your place on the water. Before beginning your practice, anchor your board to lessen distractions.
2
step 1
Begin in child’s pose, or balasana. Walk your hands over to the left rail and grasp the edge of board, hands stacked. Shift your hips to the right, allowing your right side to lengthen. After a few breaths, walk your hands over to the right rail, reaching your body toward the left and shifting your hips in the same direction. step 2
Come up onto your knees with your toes tucked under. Bring your hand to your sacrum and gently press your hips forward. Press your fists up and in to move your hips over your knees. Your gaze should be at the horizon as you maintain space in the back of your neck. Continue to move your gaze up to the sky. Draw your breath in and open your heart to the sky. step 3
Move your gaze over your left shoulder and down to your left foot. Reach down and place your left hand on your left heel. Inhale your right hand to the sky with intention. For a few breaths, alternate reaching one hand to the heel and extending the opposite arm to the sky.
3
step 4
Hold one side, left hand to left foot, right arm extended upward. Inhale, then exhale and gently extend your right arm behind you, allowing for a gentle curve in the spine as you press your hips forward. Return to center and repeat on opposite side. step 5
Inhale back to your starting position, left hand to left foot. Keeping that hand on your left foot or ankle, reach back slightly for the right heel at the same time. With both hands on your heels, relax. Breathe into this magical space between earth and sky. Notice here if you have a little room to move into the full pose. Softly release your toes so your feet are flat on the board. Press into all ten toes. Make sure your tailbone is rooted down, and your neck is soft. Keep pressing your hips over your knees and be conscious of not clenching your glutes.
4
Return to center by maintaining a soft neck and moving slowly. Come to all fours, and then sink back with a full awareness of the strength and space you have just created. CROSSBOW TURN BY MORG AN HOES TEREY
1
CROSSBOW TURNS ARE EASY and efficient in making a smooth turnaround on your board. It’s an excellent, safe way to turn without falling and you’ll discover it’s a perfect solution for that buoy turn while racing. step 1
Start by maintaining momentum while prepping for the turn. step 2
Extending your paddle out, approximately at a two o’clock angle if you plan to turn right, ten o’clock to go left. step 3
2
Keep your paddle blade vertical with the water to catch yourself and lock your turn by utilizing your arms and core. step 4
bend your knees slightly to support your body torque while pulling from the back of your body and sweeping to the front. step 5
You are now working your way in the other direction. This maneuver takes practice so work on it till perfected. Crossbow turns can also be a good core strength workout, working both right and left sides for strengthening upper body, core group muscles and the dexterity of your mind. FULFILLMENT AND
I wanted to get away from the harsh winters in my city of New York. My first destination of choice was Paris, which lasted a year before I felt the desire to move back to the States and give L.A. a try with my boyfriend, an aspiring comedian. That was in 1991. Once I experienced the weather and access to nature, there was no turning back. I tried to hold onto my New Yorker label as long as I could, but the truth was I had found my home. Still, I decided to test the world again. I lived in South Africa in 1995 right after apartheid ended, when Nelson Mandela had been elected president. I heard so many amazing stories and met so many incredible people from all walks of life. I started to think about the power of film and its ability to shift people’s awareness. When I returned to Los Angeles, I joined a small production company as an unpaid intern. I worked there for about a year and I loved every minute of it — reading scripts, developing projects and working with filmmakers that had powerful stories to tell. I had never been around people who had such passion. I was offered a job as a development assistant for the actress Tia Carerre, who was one of the owners of the company, and over time I worked my way up to head of development as the company grew from three employees to forty. I was overseeing projects with some of the biggest A-list action stars in Hollywood, flying to sets on private planes and attending big red carpet events. But what I noticed most was that many people I worked with just didn’t seem fulfilled, despite their success and fame. Luckily, that was when I found yoga. I went to my first class at the suggestion of a massage therapist. In my first class, a Kundalini yoga class, I had a very powerful energetic experience. From then on I was hooked, going to yoga five days a week. It didn’t take long before I opened my own studio with a partner, hoping to share the benefits of yoga with my community and friends. I studied to become a yoga teacher and began to teach early morning classes before I went to work. Often I led classes for the crew on set or did meditations with the actors and directors to relax them. I found the experience of connecting with others in this profoundly healing way to be very powerful. I was always being asked how I stayed so balanced and I was happy to share.

I find that the people who are drawn to my classes are often a mirror of myself. They’re the people who are looking to connect with their true nature, with their soul’s purpose. The people who want to be of service and feel that they have something unique to offer the world. They may just be a bit stuck in finding a way to express or manifest it. I spend most of the yoga part of my life training yoga teachers and leading retreats and immersions designed to bring people into a deeper understanding of themselves and ultimately leading to a place of fulfillment and joy. I truly believe that we can only be fulfilled when we know why we are here on earth and feel empowered to actualize it. I have been lucky enough to study with master teacher Rod Stryker, who has an extraordinary system to connect you with your dharma (life path) called The Four Desires. I incorporate these teachings into everything that I do. Growing up on Long Island we had a boat, so we were always on the water. I had a love of the ocean from an early age and my father made sure that I was a strong swimmer. But I grew up on a bay and I had an experience where I almost drowned and began to fear the power of the ocean. It wasn’t until about four years ago that I was driving down Pacific Coast Highway on my way to work when I saw someone standing on water. I had no idea what it was and I went to the local surf shop in Malibu, where they told me about SUP. After researching it, I was convinced that it would be amazing to do yoga on a board, but first I had to conquer my fear of the ocean. I took a few lessons that were pretty intense and forced me to get over a lot of my fears. I had one great teacher named Jimmy that I met at the marina who gave me some tips on how to read the ocean and I really had some great breakthroughs with him. I even started having dreams that I was riding waves without fear. From then on I was on the water whenever I could. I set a goal to enter the Battle of the Paddle, which was huge because I am not a competitive person. It felt amazing to complete the race and to connect with a new community that I had met through SUP. Taking yoga on the water is such a trip. We are so attached to knowing that the ground under us is not going to move when we are in a yoga studio. But yoga on the water teaches you to let go and surrender. It teaches you to let go of expectations and to truly be present, to go deep within and connect with your own rhythm and that of the water. It really is very meditative right from the start. You become attuned to your breath, your balance, the wind, the current

on the water” and your surroundings — all at once. And if you fall, it’s okay. We truly just practice non-attachment, which in yoga is said to be one of the other wings of freedom. The wing other is practice. I feel so connected to the divine when I am surrounded by the vast expanse of the ocean and the sky linked with my breath, the rhythm of my stroke, the sound of my paddle hitting the water and just feeling the glide.
If we can let go of always “doing,” we can find so much more freedom and joy. I believe that you can find that place on water or on land. I like to work with people one on one so we can really address what comes up. On the water, people seem to move beyond their limitations quickly. That’s where I find that people connect with their inner joy in a big way, doing something that they maybe weren’t sure they could do, feeling like a child, feeling accomplished, feeling free. It is so inspiring. I feel like I’m an open book to anyone who really wants to look. If we take just a moment to put our all of our devices and distractions down, we would learn so much more about people, especially the once closest to us. We would realize that we are more alike than different. We all want the same thing – to be happy and free. My own spiritual growth brought me to a place where I really want to work with like-minded people, producing commercial films that make a difference and raise consciousness in some way. I’m not interested in making another pointless action movie. I’ve done that. My next film is all about the ocean and our connection to it and to sea life. So I feel like I have come full circle. Power — it’s such an interesting word. Power does not mean force, physical strength or intensity to me. It really means moving from wisdom, knowledge, compassion and truth. Fifteen years ago, I was extremely physically strong but I didn’t have much power. In fact, I used to give my power away to others. Through yoga and life experience I have learned the importance of the balance of physical strength and flexibility as well as how to harness and build my own internal shakti or infinite potential, as we say in yoga – and how to use it efficiently. Learning to master your own energy is something that a lot of people don’t think about. But it is the essence of the type of yoga that I teach. There is nothing like being on the water. Nothing. It has been one of the biggest challenges I have offered myself. And it has brought me insight into myself. Looking fear in the face is when you begin to realize that fear is a story that we tell ourselves – it has nothing to do with the present moment. It can only live in the past or the future. Clearly, Jill is someone worth getting to know. And that’s just what we did. Tell us about your work and the Wellfit Institute. I design and lead wellness, fitness and adventure programs for individuals and groups. My programs include weekly paddleboard yoga classes, full-day adventure retreats in the Everglades and surrounding waters on foot, bike and paddle, multi-day wellness retreats and adventure camps around the country and internationally. I have an annual signature women’s wellness retreat in Naples, and kiteboard/ yoga and paddleboard yoga adventure camps internationally. Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Mexico have been on our list and we are exploring exciting new destinations all the time! As a therapist, I run weekly women’s empowerment and leadership groups and counsel private clients locally and on Skype. I lead workshops, speak at conferences and make a point to sponsor and support organizations that are creatively and powerfully combining nature-based fitness and adventure for good. How have you used your work as a platform to help young girls? What are you hoping to achieve? I believe girls and women are heroes who change the world, and they should all have the opportunity to challenge themselves through yoga, sports and adventure in nature. These activities empower individuals and elevate communities. I partnered with fellow waterwoman Yali Zawady of Ambu Yoga and Bala Vinyasa Yoga in Naples, Florida, to lead two girls’ empowerment and yoga camps this summer for middle school and high school girls. The curriculum developed from more than 15 years of therapeutic work and outdoor education with girls of all ages. This past summer was our first offering and we had to turn girls away! My vision is to launch this program nationally and train other yoga instructors and therapists to deliver high-impact, empowering camps in their area. I also created an exciting documentary project launching in June 2014. It’s a six-month leadership/empowerment and fitness curriculum that will prepare a group of teen girls for a life-changing expedition to Peru. Our girls will immerse themselves in village life with girls of similar age and offer their services building schools and teaching younger children before embarking on a trek to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This project is the culmination of two decades of therapeutic work and outdoor adventures with women and girls. Tell us more about your empowerment camps. What topics do you cover? Our camps provide a holistic approach to wellness, fitness, yoga and adventure. We provide experiential and creative opportunities for the girls to discover what they truly love about themselves and what they want to create more of in their lives. Daily yoga, healthy gourmet meals, paddleboarding, journaling, art and play are incorporated into an impactful, empowering week! Can you share one of your most memorable moments? One of my most memorable experiences came while teaching a group of teens in the Colorado Rockies when I was in my early twenties. I sometimes grappled with the notion of “getting a real job” due to family pressures and perhaps a

little society norm pressure, as well. It was difficult to motivate these kids at four a.m. for an alpine start to climb a mountain. It was a cold morning and we had a long day of climbing ahead of us. I had one particularly entitled student on this course reminding us, constantly, how wealthy, privileged and important his father was. He had a real job and this student would surely be following in his footsteps. I’ll never forget this student’s face after an hour of climbing — he had a complete look of awe as the sun crept over the rocky, knife-edge of our ridgeline, glowing red-orange warmth against the backdrop of mountains upon mountains, snow-covered peaks and a high valley bespeckled with pristine alpine lakes. He looked at me, like a kid believing in a miracle for the first time, and said loudly, “Your office is bigger than my dad’s.” It was at this point that I vowed never to chase the typical American dream. This statement was reflective of my favorite quote by eco-activist and writer, Edward Abbey, something that I knew by heart and often recited to my students: “One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am — a reluctant enthusiast.... a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; you will outlive the bastards.” This is my life’s manifesto. As I have continued to choose a life connected to nature, I realize my office is still the biggest and I love it! How do you balance work/family? I have two girls, seven and eight, who love the outdoors, and my husband is an avid cyclist and athlete as well. We are a pretty kinetic family. We work out together, whether it’s fun obstacle courses or circuit training I set up for us in the backyard. Slacklining, paddling, biking or hiking, we get our fill of the outdoors while in Florida. We travel two to three months of the year to climb, hike, surf and kite-surf. I have recently been setting an alarm to wake well before dawn to get my writing done so I can be more present on the home front! What motivates and inspires you? Wide, open, vast spaces motivate me. The wild expanse of the ocean, the swell and movement, wind over the water and waves inspire playfulness and freedom. Deserts, mountains and alpine valleys beckon me to climb. I love climbing high, being surrounded by birds and looking down at the ground, so still and silent. It’s so easy to be present in those moments.

Watching my children explore natural and wild places, discovering their capabilities and connecting with what is essential, simple and unadulterated is motivating and inspiring. They want to preserve, protect and care for their planet. I continue to be inspired by groups of women and girls experiencing the gifts of nature and surprising themselves with their own strength and power. Nature, in all its harsh and exquisite beauty, inspires me. Ebbs and flows. Dark and light. Cold, warm, stormy and calm — I feel most alive and connected in nature.
“This is my life’s manifesto. As I have continued to choose a LIFE CONNECTED TO NATURE I realize my office is NATURE, still the biggest and I love it!”

HERO ON THE
WATER ONE WOMAN’S ROAD TO INSPIRING OTHERS
BY PAIGE DROFT PHOTOS BY JEFF AKENS
SOME PEOPLE JUST SEEM TO DO IT ALL, and Robyn Benincasa is one of them. She’s a firefighter, expedition-length adventure racer, ultra-distance kayak and SUP paddler, Guinness World Record holder, leadership speaker and, most recently, a CNN hero. She’s also the founder of the Project Athena Foundation, which helps survivors of medical or traumatic setbacks realize an adventurous dream as part of their recovery. Robyn doesn’t understand the idea of “can’t,” and it’s evident in everything she does. Here, she shares what inspires her to keep inspiring others.
Robyn Benincas, On Inspiration I’m a person that wants to go big in everything I do — and to take other people with me so I can show them how awesome they are! I believe that human beings are capable of so much more than they even realize. It’s just a matter of getting together with other people who believe in you and who can get you there. That’s what I aspire to be, and it’s also what inspired me to start the Project Athena Foundation. After four hip replacements in the last five years, I realized that our ultimate success isn’t based on the setback; it’s about the comeback, in every aspect of our lives. So I wanted to use my outdoor/ adventure/endurance talents to show people who have had that setback in their lives how strong they truly are. On SUP Paddling (kayak and SUP) has been my new way forward and my personal version of “never giving up” as an athlete. When you have a setback, I find the best thing to do is to look at what you still can do, instead of what you can’t. After my hip replacements I couldn’t run very far anymore, but that led me to something I love even more in the sport of paddling. After my first hip replacement, I began racing ultra-kayak events like the Missouri River 340 and the Yukon River Quest (460 miles) solo, and was thrilled to be in the top three overall among both men and women soloists. Who knew? Then came the moving water and flat water Guinness World 24 Hour Kayak Records. On a whim, as one of my hip replacements was failing and I literally couldn’t sit down without extreme pain (my hip cup had come loose and had moved into a bad spot), I bought a used stand-up paddleboard. It was such a joy to paddle standing up! I was in love right away. SUP gave me back the feeling of being an athlete again, and it brought a whole new series of exciting races and events with it. I love exploring the endurance side of SUP, which I think is still relatively untapped. While I’m on a paddleboard, I feel connected to the power of the water, the power of my body and mind, and it’s pretty meditative to only think of the next stroke, the next balance check, the next wave. It’s a sport in which one has to be very in the moment — somewhere I don’t get to be very much in my offthe-water life.
“...SUCCESS ISN’T BASED ON THE SETBACK; IT’S ABOUT THE COMEBACK...”
On Projec t Athena Project Athena Foundation is a 501C3 that helps women who have had serious medical setbacks live their adventurous dreams as part of their recovery. This is what my SUP races and records have been about – hopefully, it’s inspiring other women who may have had setbacks with their body to embrace something they can do. Project Athena Foundation grants (Athenaships) have enabled Athenas (survivors) to experience adventures like running a marathon on the Great Wall of China, hiking the Grand Canyon and back in two days, surfing in Costa Rica, kayaking and cycling from Key Largo to Key West over three days, or running their first 5k race surrounded by family and friends. Most recently, we helped an above-the-knee amputee learn to stand-up paddleboard for the first time! These adventures help survivors see themselves as athletes and adventurers who have new goals and missions and dreams beyond surviving. Very often people are saying, “I survived, but now what?” Project Athena is that “Now what.” Most of our Athenas take that new perspective on themselves and their capabilities and continue to amaze and inspire themselves with new endurance and adventurous challenges. Several have even created their own small Project Athena adventures in which they help other local survivors bring out their inner Athena — and so the circle of luuuuuv continues. On Being a 2014 CNN Hero CNN Heroes contacted me in response to several nominations that were submitted from our Athenas and gods/goddesses (our fundraisers). How cool is that? What an honor! I cried when I heard the news a few weeks later that Project Athena was chosen as one of the 30 CNN Heroes for 2014. The true heroes, however, are our Athenas, who embrace these adventures with the same warrior spirit they used to survive their medical setbacks, as well as my Project Athena teammates, who really make the magic happen. I’m just the woman behind the curtain.
60 Samata I V1N2
The very best thing that has happened from the CNN heroes segment airing has been the influx of survivors who are telling us their stories and the consistent stream of fundraising gods/ goddesses who want to take part in one of our annual adventures — like the rim to rim trek in the Grand Canyon and our kayak/ride from Key Largo to Key West. This is exactly what we were hoping for. Now we have to see if we make the Top 10 CNN Heroes show at the end of 2014. If anyone reading this can send us good juju, we are grateful! It always helps! On World Records Since I am an endurance girl by nature (and I’m not good at sprint events or waves!), I decided to try to set the first Guinness World Record for “Longest Distance by Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) on flat water in 24 Hours” I think the whole 24 Hour GWR idea is fun because anyone can play it, at any place in the world, at any time, and it sets off an international competition among like-minded endurance paddlers without having to travel to one spot on the globe to race head to head. All it takes is applying to Guinness, getting approval on the location, setting up formal witnesses and video cameras, and getting a few good friends to watch you suffer! On November 8, 2013, I paddled 90.7 miles in Huntington Beach Harbor, CA in exactly 24 hours on the stopwatch — around a 1.49-mile island. Oy! The words on a poster I saw online sum up my
LEFT: Robyn on her way to winning the California 100 in May 2014 (1st Female and 2nd SUP overall) GWR experience: Crawling is acceptable, falling is acceptable, puking is acceptable, crying is acceptable, blood is acceptable, pain is acceptable, quitting is not. I did all of these things along the way. Good times — just like the old adventure racing days! On Future Goals My most important goal is to help more women overcome their setbacks by showing them how much they rock. Watching someone else have a success that you know will change their life forever is the greatest gift on earth. It’s truly a thrill and an honor to give and receive that. I want to help 75 to 100 Athenas per year for the next couple of years and put on six to seven challenging and inspiring adventures for them and our fundraising gods/goddesses, many of which will include SUP! On the personal side, I have a big kayaking race, the Missouri River 340, coming up, and I am going to take another shot at the Tahoe Classic SUP race this September. I also did my first 100-mile downriver SUP race this past May, the California 100, and I loved it! One of my goals is to really support the endurance side of SUP as well as the flat water and river potential. Almost everyone lives near a body of water of some kind, and that’s where the growth of SUP will come from. SUP is an every-man, every-woman sport, and it’s not just about the pros and the waves and the sprints.
ABOVE: Robyn coaching Alli Morgan, one of the Athenas on her first stand-up paddle experience.
SUP is really the perfect full body workout and a great adventure for your soul every time you get on the water. My dream is for everyone to have the thrill and that moment of freedom that came from riding their bicycle for the first time, but this time on a SUP. All ages, all abilities, all good. On Reaching Out & Words of Wisdom If anyone out there knows a survivor we can help or would like to participate in one of our Project Athena Adventures as a fundraising god/goddess, you can find the applications and the adventure calendar at www.projectathena.org. We love to have other strong, fun people along on these adventures and I have a feeling that the people reading this right now are perfect for the job. Words of wisdom? I find that life is so much easier when you’re in the good flow on the river of life. How do you know you’re in it? Things come naturally, easily, your path forward is clear, and what you need to succeed is always in reach. Keep seeking it and keep re-evaluating whether you’re in it. If you’re not, paddle across the river and find it.

ON MAY 3, 2014, THE WATERS OFF NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA, RAN PINK as more than 1,000 participants donned jerseys in tribute to survivors and victims of breast cancer. but the third annual standup for the cure was more than just a race. The day included breast cancer and melanoma screenings, genetic counseling, a health and fitness expo with more than 50 vendors, live music, great food and a sense of community that is truly unmatched. “Think of us as a giant support group for victims and survivors of breast cancer,” says event advocate and breast cancer survivor Judie vivian. “we’re introducing women to stand-up paddling’s healthy lifestyle, screening for two dreadful types of cancer and having a blast.”

THE FACTS breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the united states. getting regular screening tests (along with treatment if diagnosed) lowers the risk of dying from breast cancer. screening tests can detect breast cancer early, when the chances of survival are highest.
four years ago, the maui-based schweitzer family introduced Judie to stand-up paddling, and it was love at ďŹ rst stroke. Judie, considering herself one of the lucky ones, decided that she could make a difference with her newfound passion. The concept of standup for the cure was born, and after collaborating with dan van dyck, things began happening quickly. riviera paddlesurf, maui Jim and kona brewing company stepped up as sponsors for the inaugural event in 2012, which would prove wildly successful. in a sport barely six years old at the time, Judie and her team surprised the paddling world with the attendance of 700 participants and raised over $60,000, snagging a guinness world record for largest sup lesson along the way and winning the 2012 sup award for Top philanthropic effort to boot.

Judie serves on the board of directors at susan g. komen in orange county to be absolutely sure of how and where donation funds are spent. “it’s a lot now that i’m 64,” she says, “but i’m determined to make a difference for women and breast cancer survivors and hope that the standup for the cure approach will help raise awareness and educate younger people about the importance of early detection and what to do if they have no health insurance.” The 2014 event raised over $125,000, making it clear that the paddling community can do incredible things. “it’s a real team effort,” says dan van dyck, event director. “we all have our strengths, from Judie’s unsurpassed energy and passion to our sponsors’ support and our volunteers’ generosity. standup for the cure is a year-long campaign that not only raises a ton of money, but grows the sport of stand-up paddling as part of our mission. i think we take that spirit of community and giving farther than any other event.” in its quest for the national affiliate designation for susan g. komen for the cure, standup for the cure will be announcing two new events scheduled for the fall of this year.

goodbiz Paddle the Mitten SUP By Linda Brown
The Danger on the Water If there’s any downside to the explosive growth of stand-up paddling, it’s inexperienced paddlers and instructors who can run into serious trouble on the water — fast.
In June of 2012, mid-afternoon on a Saturday, I watched a tenyear-old girl paddle out on her inflatable with strong offshore winds. I was paddling into the wind myself, and it was a serious workout. The girl had no leash, no life vest and was clearly inexperienced. Her mother watched casually from shore as the girl flailed inexpertly on the rough water, moving into deep territory. The child was so exhausted that her tiny body looked like it was just going to collapse, and I wondered how her mother might possibly help when, inevitably, she fell in. I set out after the girl myself and when I reached her, I helped her shaking form onto my board and set off for shore, towing her board along. Her mother was appreciative, if somewhat perplexed — she had absolutely no idea of how badly that experience could have gone. Here’s the thing — accidents happen fast. And when there’s water involved, they seem to happen even faster, with potentially serious ramifications. When you’re responsible for others on the water — whether you’re watching your children, doing the buddy thing with a friend, or teaching a lesson or class – there’s no room for error. You have to know what the hell you need to do in any situation. That’s why I find it appalling that true water safety certification is widely overlooked, especially in most stand-up paddle businesses. It’s an untouched topic of discussion that greatly concerns me. There is simply no justification for any kind of water instructor to not have safety and rescue training. It’s these standards and certifications and training programs that raise the bar in our industry. Understanding this information helps new paddlers and gives our sport credibility. My clients know that

I care about their well being, and it’s paid off many times over. Leaf through the pages of this and other stand-up paddling magazines or browse the images on social media, and you’ll see images of spectacular paddles in tranquil settings. But everything isn’t always rainbows and SUP puppy dogs. I’ve found that it’s not a popular topic of conversation, but I think it’s time we step off our boards and discuss the dangerous side of inexperience. I’m happy to begin. Just one month after my experience with that young girl, still in the dog days of summer, I had a group of SUP yogis with me for a peaceful and challenging practice in oppressively hot weather. Three men joined to make up the group of eight. As we moved from one asana into down dog, I heard a splash and a yell for help. I turned my attention to the unconscious man in the water and immediately leapt into the water to attend to him. His wife was already there, struggling to hold onto both her roughly 190-pound husband and his flipped board. It required quick action and even quicker thinking – this is what we’d call a nonresponsive rescue with a board flip. It certainly wasn’t as easy as it seemed when we practiced in training. Fortunately, the other students were quick to assist and I was able to flip my board with him on top. He became responsive, but was not well. In the end, I found out the student was both diabetic and dehydrated. Inversion in this situation was a possibly deadly mix. In April 2013, I was in SUP yoga training when another student because distressed in the water. Others in the class were busy with their own training, and I was positioned taking pictures. The student had become very quiet, and it struck me that drowning is quiet. Rarely do you have the splashing and shouting for help that Hollywood
There is simply no justification for any kind of water instructor to not have safety and rescue training. portrays in its drowning scenes. I moved quickly to alert the others and she was brought up onto the board, where she began to recover. The experience was something that had happened to many of us — she had swallowed some water and couldn’t catch her breath. It was an eye opener for many of us in that training. We were all instructors, all comfortable in the water, all proficient in water safety. Regardless, an accidental mouthful of water and this woman was suddenly in genuine distress. It’s something that can happen to anyone.
Tips for Paddling Safe
Two months later, I was having a grand time instructing a group of kids learning to paddle. Another instructor and I had a group of 14 students from a local school out on the water, broken into two groups. one bigger teen boy in my group was wobbly and fell two times, but he was able to heave himself back on the board. The third time he fell, it was clear he was struggling. I aided him in the way I was trained, and he lay exhausted as I towed him into shore. So much energy is expended on the water — I find that people are often surprised by how much work is really involved, particularly for beginners.
3. Leash Dare I say, these are more important than PfDs! There are endless options — coiled, straight, long, short, quick release, etc. They cost approximately $30 and are well worth the money.
I’m so happy that none of these incidences ended in tragedy, when they could have so easily. In these scenarios, I never regret being SuP safety trained. occurrences like these may not happen every day, but they do happen. The best thing anyone can do is to play it safe – wear a leash and a personal flotation device. Get proper rescue training. These are the things that save lives. It’s certainly not laws for which I am advocating, but rather awareness and education for stand-up paddlers. Whether I am in Michigan, florida, Kentucky or new York, I always educate my students about safety. It’s like wearing a seat belt in your car. You may never need it, but car accidents can and do happen. Are you willing to take the chance? Someone once said to me, “You have $10,000 in boards here, but you can’t afford a belt PfD?” It really hit home. from that day on, I have always required the use of leashes and PfDs. It gives me a peace of mind and my clients the confidence they need to be successful paddlers. It’s refreshing to see manufacturers, magazines, professionals, instructors and the SuP community welcome safety onto their boards. It’s evident in how far the technology and availability of safety gear has come. The bottom line is that it’s far easier to prevent drowning through awareness, education and implementation. Last year in the united States, there were at least five deaths off the paddleboards. There are many things in life that could cause us harm — please don’t let our wonderful sport be one of them. For more information, resources or Q&As, please contact lindy@ paddlethemittensup.com or visit us online at paddlethemittensup.com for free advice and videos.
1. A float plan Leaving a float plan on the off chance that you don’t return will help emergency workers find you. I travel by myself, which means I explore wilderness areas alone. I leave a note in my car on the seat, just in case. 2. Marking your board free uSCG identification decals provide “If found” info.
4. Belt PFD These are useful for the proficient paddler. 5. Full life vest If you are a beginner, we recommend starting with one of these. 6. Self-rescue Take a lesson from a water safety/board rescue certified SuP Instructor. 7. The basics Always know the weather forecast, and take your phone with you in a waterproof case. Know your limits and if you’re paddling with new people, make sure everyone is on the same page about how far you’re going. 8. Instructors If you are an instructor, it’s not a bad idea to have people fill out a short health assessment when they sign the liability forms. If you are a student and you’re not signing a liability form, you may want to inquire about safety and liability insurance. 9. Ask for proof If your SuP yoga instructor doesn’t share his or her credentials, don’t be afraid to ask for them. And if they don’t have credentials, consider finding an instructor who does.

“The choices you make, not the chances you take, are what determine your destiny.”
The average Slovenian teenager isn’t a paddleboarding phenomenon. But then, Manca Notar isn’t your average teenager. She’s been in the water from birth, thanks to her passionate windsurfing parents, and when SUP fever swept Europe, it was an effortless progression. It would quickly prove to be more than a hobby — in 2012, this young gun swept nine European SUP races in a row and she continues to shine in sprint races. For Manca, native to a corner of the world that has been known for instability, stand-up paddleboarding has opened doors and turned life on the water into a fast-moving blur of incredible experiences and life-changing opportunities. Her Stomping Grounds Skofja Loka is a really small country, it has only two million people. We have Alps, the seaside, beautiful lakes and rivers. The country is so small that in the morning you can ski in the mountains and then in the afternoon you can enjoy warm temperature weather at the seaside and have fun SUPing. Europe is really picturesque as well. I’m always looking forward to racing in Europe. Every place is somehow special, unique and has its own beauty. For me, the most beautiful
