TAKE A MOMENT TO SEE ITS SIGNIFICANCE. TAKE A MOMENT TO GET ON THE WATER.

We are a culture living in the electronic

age. Our children are using tablets, mobile phones and other gadgets for entertainment at younger and younger ages. But as connected as we are by these devices, we’re more isolated than ever in a fundamental way. Unadulterated contact with nature is the simplest way to re-connect with what really matters. When we take time to get on the water, it’s an effortless way to decompress and reflect. It’s a reminder that true value in life can be measured simply — a quiet moment to admire the beauty of nature, a board, paddle and movement under our own power, gratitude for yet another day. Leading a life of little excess is not an easily accomplished goal in our world. Living simply has become a catchphrase, a statement oft repeated with little follow through. Take a moment to see its significance. Take a moment to get on the water. Paddle with a purpose. Early morning paddle with no one else in sight on Lake Tahoe. PHOTO BY ENSYDE

BREAST HEALTH A Preventative Approach: Part 3 BY SCOTT ES TRADA

IN PART ONE AND TWO OF THIS SERIES I discussed the serious effects of estrogen dominance on our systems, including diseased breast tissue and undue stress on men and women alike. Now, I’ll focus on the next plan of action to begin to stack the odds in our favor, learning how to take a progressive approach towards a healthy preventive lifestyle in regard to breast health and beyond. Let’s not be blinded by a sea of pink any longer knowing that the answer to cancer isn’t found in a pink bucket of KFC, pink lipstick or pink water bottles. Let’s not focus solely on the cure and instead direct some energy to the cause and see where that leads. STEP 1: Vitamin D3 Get your sunshine quota up, way up! Vitamin D levels in our culture are very low on the scale, so get your level checked ASAP for a reference point. Ten to twenty minutes of sunshine on a naked body at midday sun is the best way to soak up this sunshine vitamin, but since most people can’t make that happen, we are best to supplement. The Vitamin D Council has upped its longtime recommended intake levels from 400 IU’s to 8000-10000 IU’s daily after research has shown that vitamin D levels of 70nl/ml are preventing heart disease and cancer at the highest level, well beyond the medical system’s “good” range of 30-40nl/ml. If vitamin K is present in your formula, it holds the key to getting the D3 into the bone marrow and docked up to the cell receptor sites all over the body. When levels are high — in the 60-70+ range – we are now regulating the gene expression of over 2,000 disease states as well as inherited gene disorders and conditions. Odds are, they will lay dormant and not “turn on” to express that data. When vitamin D levels are low, you increase your chances of falling victim to whatever gene expression you carry and the ageing process accelerates, bringing many unwanted symptoms to the surface. Pregnant and nursing moms have the lowest counts in our culture and need to ensure their 30 Samata I V1N3

vitamin D levels are up to avoid any added stress on themselves or their babies. People of darker pigment skin also need to take extra care to make sure their levels are high, as their darker pigment filters out more of the beneficial sun rays when outside. Typically, the darker the pigment, the more you need. A simple blood test tells the story. The fact that you have to ask for it from your doctor tells a lot about how slow our system is in adapting the latest research of this highly valuable and inexpensive nutrient in the overall picture of health. Seventy percent of women with breast cancer are vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D has been shown to prevent cancer cell growth and decrease the expression of cancer causing genes. JoEllen Welsh, a researcher with the State University of New York at Albany, has studied the effects of vitamin D for 25 years. She believes vitamin D may be just as powerful as the most modern anti-cancer drugs. “What happens is that vitamin D enters the cells and triggers the cell death process,” she says. “It’s similar to what we see when we treat cells with Tamoxifen, a drug used to treat breast cancer.” Still not convinced? Let’s add to the list of benefits:

• Increased fertility • Major immune system support • Better bone density • Protection against PCOS and many other imbalances!

BOTTOM LINE: get your levels checked ASAP with your doctor (you have to ask for the test) and move into action! A simple blood test is all it takes! My recommendation is the best formula out there, Ultra D3, from Dr. Garland, available at www.askdrgarland.com. Mention you read this article and get the membership discount pricing. This formula has the essential vitamin K2 paired with vitamin D3 to ensure proper absorption and whole food vitamin C from Amla berry along with trace minerals to round out the synergy. Good day sunshine! STEP2: DIM (Diindolylmethane) “An optimal estrogen balance has implications for cancer prevention and successful aging in both women and men,” according to Dr. Michael Zeligs, M.D., co-author of the All About DIM book. I have been passionately advocating the use of Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) for years because of its ability to moderate estrogen in men and women. I always included it as part of an overall cancer prevention and recovery diet and detoxification protocol.

What Are I3C And DIM? I3C (Indole-3-Carbinol) is produced by the break down of glucobrassicin, which is found in high concentrations in cruciferous vegetables. I3C research indicates this compound possesses anti-carcinogenic, antioxidant and antiatherogenic properties. It is known to shift strong

Indoles are powerful plant compounds found in cruciferous vegetables ... which aid in balancing estrogen metabolism and can help maintain a healthy hormonal balance for both men and women.

estrogens towards less estrogenic metabolites. Indoles are powerful plant compounds found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, kale, Brussel sprouts, caulifower and leeks, which aid in balancing estrogen metabolism and can help maintain a healthy hormonal balance for both men and women. DIM is a known immune system activator. There is speculation that this immune activation directly targets tumors, bacteria and viruses. DIM has also been linked to decreased body fat, improved lean muscle mass and the healthy maintenance of the prostate. DIM has been shown to affect the production of protein in the body’s cells in a way that supports the detoxification of plastics. For many years now, the powerful anti-cancer properties of many foods, herbs, minerals and vitamins have been shown to have profound benefit, without the horrendous side effects experienced with mainline chemotherapy and radiation. Prominent researchers have documented that this balance of estrogen metabolites is an important factor in maintaining breast, uterine, cervical and prostate health. Women and men also use DIM as an integral part of successful weight management programs. Adding this simple capsule to your program is the equivalent of eating three to five pounds of these particular veggies per day, without the enzyme inhibitor that would come if you actually chowed down that amount of these veggies. Eating normal amounts in a healthy intake is good and adding the concentration of the DIM in a capsule is wise for anyone wanting to stack the odds in their favor for preventing estrogen dominance. Reach out to the good people at Energetic Nutrition for ordering and support with DIM online at www.energeticnutrition.com.

Step 3: Mineralization In all my nutrition talks, workshops and articles, this simple truth has been the foundation since the beginning. Ocean water and blood plasma are essentially the same in their design. The mineral complex that makes up ocean water is so very similar to our own blood mineral complex that when we add this ionic mineral

concentrate to our daily intake via water, fresh pressed juices, smoothies, soups, etc., we are supporting the very foundation of all life as we know it. It’s so simple yet profound that most “smart” people miss this vital concept of longevity. When we lack the 80+ minerals and trace elements that make up our composition and conduct the electrical current inside us, we suffer. The one common dominator that connects the longest living peoples of this planet over the centuries that live or have lived without major disease is a high amount of mineralization in their bodies.

topically with magnesium “oil,” which has no fat content but feels like oil or a high mineral hot spring soak. This might be the best way to increase levels quickly, give relief to muscle aches and induce deep sleep and relaxation. Find it online at www.ancient-minerals.com.

These minerals are like the foreman of each and every organ, directing the workers to do their job and carry out the basic function of health in balance. If we lack these trace elements in varying amounts, we still live but we don’t thrive and we certainly don’t have a strong shield of defense against the onslaught of about 80,000 plus chemicals now circling in a toxic daily drip upon us.

These vital minerals help to displace the synthetic estrogens and assist the body in removing the chemical load from all sources to maintain a healthy pH balance.

Magnesium is at the heart of things in our mini ocean – literally. Every time our heart beats it requires trace amounts of potassium and magnesium. Without these two minerals, the heart would stop. Potassium is relatively easier to find in our intake, but magnesium is not so easy as it’s needed in hundreds of metabolic functions, thus requiring a steady supply. Running low really puts a stress on our system, especially contributing to heart disease, high blood pressure and overall cardio health just to name a few. As health seeking active people get more into natural foods, juicing and green smoothies, the medical effect is very real. Chlorophyll, the green blood of plants, is very close to our own blood in nature. At the center of our blood is the oxygen rich carrying element, iron. At the center of chlorophyll is magnesium, the lifegiving element. Without it, plants could not harness and convert the sun’s energy into a food that sustains us. The highest absorption is through the skin

Other liquid mineral concentrates also feed the body well with the addition of half a teaspoon daily to water, smoothies, soups, etc. Great sources are www.traceminerals.com or www. askdrgarland.com/shop/Life-Transfusion-LiquidMineral-Complex.html.

Remember that diseased breast tissue is a repository, a storehouse of contaminates. Research has shown that in tissue samples:

• 99% contained parabens • 100% contained fungal spores • 100% contained mercury What’s more, in a five-year study of 300 women with breast cancer, 93% had undergone root canals and the bacteria found in the root cavity show up in the same diseased breast tissue. Combining this starting protocol with the recommendations from part two will give you a strong foundation to right the “soil” of your body, removing the excess synthetic estrogens and heavy metal halides for a new and empowered awareness to live your life. Lead by example and take 100% responsibility for your health – you’ll inspire others to do the same. In the last part to this series, I’ll bring it all together with a “cheat sheet” of short bullet points and a simple argument for taking a more preventive approach to disease and the support of breast/hormone health. Paddle strong ladies!

CORE DEVELOPMENT Push-Up Renegade Row BY C ASI RYNKOWSKI

YOUR BODY WAS DESIGNED to work as a whole unit, just as it does while you’re paddling. So why not cross train in the same way? That’s the basis of compound exercises – multi-joint movements that work several muscle groups at the same time. They can be more difficult to perform with correct form, but they build more muscle and burn more calories because of the energy required to do them.

1

Core development is a great benefit of compound training. Forcing your core to stabilize while performing a compound exercise builds power better than just about any other exercise. This is important for paddling performance because your core is a huge part of the power in your stroke. This is an intermediate exercise, but it can be modified by dropping to your knees. Choose a weight that will allow you to keep your hips square to the floor as you perform the rowing portion of this exercise. step 1

2

Start in a push-up position holding a dumbbell in each hand. Your shoulders should be over your hands, your feet wider than shoulder width and your core nice and tight. step 2

Holding your body in a tight plank position, compete a push up by lowering your body down until your elbows are bent 90 degrees and then push back up to the starting position. step 3

Next, push your weight into the balls of your feet and lift one elbow up and back while keeping your hips square to the floor and your core tight. Return the weight to the floor. step 4

Repeat this row with the other arm. One rep is complete after one push up and row on both the left and right sides.

3

Complete as many reps as you can until failure.

goodform YOG A

ADHO MUKHA SVANASANA Downward Facing Dog Beginner To Intermediate

1

BY JULIE ROACH

DOWNWARD FACING DOG is one of the shining stars of SUP yoga poses. On shore or in the studio, this is a very grounding posture. In SUP yoga, down dog is a magic carpet ride! The physical aspect of down dog creates space in the back body, while the spiritual focus allows our mind to quiet and our hearts to sing. Gazing out at the water from this position is absolutely amazing and the sun warming your back creates a long line of energy from your palms to the soles of your feet. Feel the freedom to create your own personal downward facing dog. Adjust, modify and linger here — this pose activates and stimulates every muscle fiber in your body. 2

Begin with a warm up paddle of twenty or thirty minutes to get your heart rate up and find your pace on the water. Anchoring your board is important for safety and reduces distractions.

step 1

Begin in a standing position with a wide grip on your paddle. Lengthen through your torso and obliques. Activate your quads and keep your knees soft, not locked. step 2

With your abdominals engaged, fold forward, maintaining a loose grip on the paddle. Allow your hamstrings to warm up here as your torso hangs forward from the hips like a rag doll. This inversion brings fresh, oxygen-rich blood to your brain, revitalizing the nervous system. Let the back body start to awaken here. step 3

After a few deep breaths in this rag doll variation, glance up and lower your hips, knees bent. Keep your knees bent and power up your core as you take a deep squat, reaching forward and placing your paddle toward the nose of your board.

3

step 4

Set your hands shoulder width apart and adjust your position on your board. The center handle hold or “sweet spot” should be directly under your navel. Drop your head and take a moment to just breathe and be. Rock the board from side to side a little to gain some trust in the stability of your board. Then take some time to check in with your alignment and personalize your down dog. Start with your palms and press through all ten fingers to alleviate the pressure on the heels of your hands. Elbows are soft, biceps, triceps and deltoids are actively engaged. Hug in with your lower ribs and engage your abs. Keep your breath spilling free and easy through your nose. Tilt your tailbone to the sky and spiral your thighs back and apart. If your hamstrings are resisting, keep your knees bent and know that your heels don’t have to touch the board. Linger here in this fluid inversion, meditating on one or all of these aspects of your yoga practice: the breath, the sky, the horizon, the movement of the water underneath you, the birds, or ocean sounds, the clouds or color of the sky. It’s a timeless meditative zen that is authentically you.

After completing university in cold, rainy Northern England, Arabella Higgins was ready for a change in the weather, the pace and the perspective. What could be more different than the heat and humidity of exotic Thailand? The added appeal of a teaching position made it impossible to resist, and the change has proven a fateful choice. Not only has Arabella embraced that new perspective, she’s found an entirely new connection to the mind, body and soul. And it’s all thanks to the water — and a few elephants.

Growing up with meditation instructors as parents, Arabella had an early exposure to yoga and alternative wellness. “I’ve been fortunate to learn a variety of styles in San Francisco, Cambridge, Kerala and now Bangkok,” she says. In California, she saw people practicing yoga on the water, but missed the opportunity to do so herself. It would be here in Thailand, just outside Bangkok on Taco Lake, that she first explored SUP yoga, an experience she describes as “easy to do and great fun with friends… a gentle alternative to wakeboarding and for me a warm-up and warm-down before and after more intense water sports.” Picture it — together with her friend Alina and moving under the instruction of Adam Malinowski, Arabella taps into her inner yogi, moving seamlessly through chaturanga on an inflatable paddleboard next to the nine-foot elephant on which Adam sits. “Lift your tailbone up, belly button lifting. Exhale, pressing gently away from the ground,” he recites, making it seem as though yoga in a setting like this is just an ordinary, everyday occurrence. For Arabella, the path to this most extraordinary experience would begin with a crashing reality. “Although I love my yoga practice,” she explains, “within an hour of stepping out into Bangkok’s city streets, most of the zen has dissipated into a vortex of tuk-tuk roars, whistling protestors and the hustle of street food vendors. Did India’s enlightened yogis recommend a bi-weekly practice in air-conditioned tower blocks followed by an ingestion of the city air, whilst courting death on the back of a motorbike taxi? I’m not so sure.” So when Starboard

offered Arabella the chance to evolve her practice from land to water, it was an opportunity she could not pass up. The sport of stand-up paddling and the offshoot that is SUP yoga is a phenomenon taking the world by storm, spanning warm-water locations from Bali to San Diego to the not-sotropical city of Chicago. Enthusiasts declare that practicing on the board is a better workout for your muscles – and your mind — as it requires greater core strength and stability. Essentially, the board does not lie. If you are off balance, in a posture you may be comfortable with on land, you might find yourself falling into the water. But it’s all part of the experience, and you’ll simply want to get up and try again. And then there’s the added bonus of practicing yoga surrounded by clear water and breathtaking views. This experience, and what she hoped would be its lingering benefits, is exactly what Arabella was seeking. It would begin far from calmly. Four days after making their plans, four Bangkokians — Arabella, Adam and two friends — were desperately late and trying not to panic, stuck as they were in city traffic. “We’re going to be okay,” Adam says. “Our motorbike taxi has just broken down, but I have a feeling we’re going to be okay.” With just six minutes to spare before the train departed, his calm demeanor was not reassuring, and yet his manifesting power triumphed. The foursome somehow made it, running along the platform with board backpacks flapping. Two minutes later, the 1940s classic train sped full-steam ahead to their adventure in Kanchanaburi, Thailand.

Chicken rice and fruit hawkers strolled through the carriages as they raced through the Thai countryside. A formally attired train conductor inspected their tickets (and paddle) with curiosity. A monk walked by, hardly giving them a glance, tightly gripping his mobile phone and bottle of Coke. Little did they know these were not your average backpackers. They were novice SUP yoga enthusiasts ready to find peace in any lake, river or watering hole. Kanchanaburi, located 168 kilometers from Bangkok, takes three hours to reach by train and is famous for its Bridge Over the River Kwai. A prisoner of war memorial from World War II might not seem like the obvious choice for aquatic yoga bliss, but the town is charming

and surrounded by truly stunning scenery. Arabella and crew arrived and checked into the quaint Sugar Cane resort, home to floating bungalows amongst blossoming lily pads. The first stop that afternoon was Taweechai elephant village, situated along the River Kwai Noi, about 45 minutes’ drive north of the town. Here, Karen Hill Tribe people and Burmese Mahouts live with retired elephants from the logging industry. Upon arrival, the manager happily let the foursome float a stand-up paddleboard with the elephants. She was clear, however, that they were not responsible if anything happened. “Thanks to the rains the night before,” says Arabella, “the clear, calm body of water I had envisioned was dark

... Arabella t aps int o her inner yog i , MOV ING SE AMLE SSLY THROUGH and churning. What could go wrong with a 3,000-pound elephant, two inflatable boards, three yoga practitioners and a muddy torrent of water?” As they trekked down to the river, the Mahouts sang traditional songs, high-pitched and slightly eerie, which had a calming effect on the elephants as they strolled towards the river. “I was in awe at how much control these comparatively tiny humans had over these magnificent creatures,” says Arabella. “Bouncing on their bare backs, the elephants made every passenger miniature.” Among a relatively oblivious crowd consisting of local families and tourists, Arabella and her friends began to assemble the gear by the river beach. Pumping up a board may not be an official pre-yoga warm-up, but when a local Mahout offered to help out, it became a hefty muscleman arm-toning competition.

CHATUR ANG A ON AN INFL ATABLE PADDLEBOARD NE X T TO THE NINE- FOOT ELEPHANT ...

On the water, the team became comfortable with paddling through the river. They tied the boards together, tucked the paddle into the holder and after the multiple forms of transportation that day, were finally ready for class. As the hour passed, Adam led them through some basic sun salutations, warriors, shoulder stands and backbends. Despite the added distraction of trying not to crash into the banks of the flowing river, they made some significant attempts at the classic and not-so-classic poses. “I was surprised that the boards felt as solid as the ground and were wide enough for nearly every posture,” Arabella says. “Some of the simple one-legged postures, such as tree or dancer, were more challenging. However, with the inspiring sight of an elephant spraying water over us, I found the determination to try some of the moves that I struggle with on the ground. A splash landing seemed preferable to the hard floor of a yoga studio, so I felt more confident and held for longer the dreaded headstand. My favorite pose was of course Savasana, lying on my back, watching the clouds passing overhead, hands gently trailing in the water.” As the day drew to a close, they travelled back to their floating homes to test out some moves on the River Kwai. Local villagers looked on unfazed, paddling around in their own water vehicles, as they moved through sequences with the backdrop of a phenomenal Thai sunset. “It was one of those unique moments where you fully appreciate the outstanding beauty of this country,” says Arabella. They woke up the next day at the crack of dawn to head to Erawan National Park. A UNESCO Heritage site, this park is famous for its series of stunning cascading turquoise waterfalls along a three-kilometer trail. Enjoyed by both Thais and foreigners, the park can literally be teeming with picnickers by mid-day. With bikini-clad Russian tourists strolling past monks paying respects to the site, the attitude can be ‘mai pen rai’ (no worries). Serenity is hard to find with water-bombing Thai teenagers and day-trippers, so Arabella and her friends arrived early. Trekking along a path of steep steps next to lush foliage, they stopped at each of the stunning waterfall tiers along the way. At the fifth tier, they were ready to dive into the cold clear waters and set up the boards. “After a hot and sticky trek and pumping up two boards, nothing is more of a relief than practicing yoga with the gentle spray of a waterfall,” Arballa remembers. “Adam led us through a seamless class, with the cold waters trickling

over us, the stresses of the city floated away gently down the falls. But anyone who is familiar with these waters knows that they contain the unexpected, slightly unnerving ‘feet-nibbling pedicure fish.’ Whilst making a meal of dead toe skin, they continually scare unsuspecting tourists. For us, they simply added to the ‘natural’ spa package of the day.” After an intense hike back down to the car park, they were ready for a local meal of fresh seafood and spicy Thai delights. Just 15 minutes’ drive from the park, back towards Kanchanaburi, is a local homestay built upon the river’s banks. Here, the water is calm and set against a backdrop of breathtaking mountains. They set about the boards and soon local schoolgirls hopped on for a spin. Language is not a barrier on the waterways, and the girls imitated the yoga postures playfully. They quickly took over the SUP, pretending to be boat-taxi drivers and shrieking to each other “Pai Kruntep Leow Leow” (Quickly! Let’s go to Bangkok!), whilst jumping on the board. “Not yet, please,” Arabella said to them, even as she appreciated the simple nature of local life.

Watching the girls play with the board reminded her of the true purpose of SUP yoga. It is a moment of connecting the practice with nature through pure “sanook” (fun). “Although it’s surely not the most traditional discipline of yoga envisioned by the Gurus,” Arabella says, “there is something about the childlike joy and playfulness of being on the water that aids the practice. Back in Bangkok, surrounded by perfectly toned bodies, coordinated outfits, mirrors and type-A yoginis, you can lose some of the lightheartedness. On the board, you have to let go of the perfectionist, as at any time a wave could come along and knock you off your feet.” Looking into the little girls’ faces as they squealed with laughter in prayer pose was the perfect reminder that yoga does not have to be so intense. For Arabella, the SUP yoga trip in Kanchanaburi was an opportunity to break away from both the traditional regime of yoga and traditional traveling. This type of trip improves mental and physical strength and flexibility, and most of all it is really fun. It wasn’t just the typical “take a picture, tick a box” trip, but a chance to engage with local people and go off the beaten path — or river.

Going Troppo A SUP ADVENTURE WITH MY BOYS My favorite quote is from Mark Twain. “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” So when I contemplated going to Lake Tahoe to compete in a paddleboard race, I had visions of making it into an adventure. I’m 38, independent and rarely afraid to venture on my own – a Lonely Planet kind of traveler; a backpacker on a budget. I backpacked Australia alone for five months after college. It was there I met my husband, Neil — he was on a twelve-month adventure himself. He understands my sense of adventure and wanderlust. went, my son Bodhi in tow, traveling Oahu and the Big Island for two weeks each.

Ever since I began racing, I have seen photos of a race at South Lake Tahoe called “Race the Lake of the Sky,” an annual event that draws hundreds of paddlers each summer. The water looked as clear as the ocean in the Caribbean, surrounded by beautiful mountains, some of them snow capped. Coming from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, it’s like visiting another planet. My younger brother, Brendan, lives in San Diego, and he and his fiancée were expecting their first baby around the same time as the race. I figured I could tie in a visit with them while I was out west. Throughout my racing career, I have been lucky enough to be sponsored by a generous and kind family, the Meylers, who own BOGA Paddleboards. They have provided me boards that I would not otherwise have been able to afford, and they have encouraged and supported my causes in Florida, which include beach and waterway cleanups with Surfrider Broward. When Dave Meyler heard that I was thinking about driving out to Tahoe for the race, he said he’d rented a house in Tahoe, to come on out, and that he would take care of my race fees. I’d be pretty crazy to pass that up.

It was exciting thinking that I was the first

person to paddleboard there.

I wanted to get to Tahoe early so that I could adjust properly to the altitude before racing 14.4 miles. There was so much I had to get done, it left me really no time to actually train for the race. I was going to have to just rely on my love for the sport (something I do quite often). I hopped in the driver’s seat on the morning of the trip, mapped out possible routes to Tahoe, texted the photo of the possible routes to my friends for advice and let them choose. My boys were excited to go for a trip in our new van, which probably helped them behave better than they normally would. After about six hours on the road, my kids asked if we were there yet. I had to explain to them that driving across the country takes many days, and we were not even out of the state yet. My boys, Bodhi and Jack, were amazingly well behaved the entire drive to Nevada. They kept busy with books, movies, and games, and I tried to stop for breaks — a Civil War battlefield in Vicksburg, Mississippi, a playground in Texas. I promised them that though we were rushing to get to the race in Tahoe on time, we would spend more time doing fun things after the race. I didn’t intend to paddle until I got to Tahoe, but as I was driving through New Mexico, I saw a sign for scuba diving. I Googled “scuba diving in New Mexico” and found out there

was a spot nearby called the Blue Hole, a natural circular hole about 80 feet deep and 60 feet wide. It’s filled with clear blue water that flows at about 3,000 gallons per minute. I read that there was a park nearby with camping called Santa Rosa State Park and that’s where we decided to spend the night. In the morning, we were the first people at the Blue Hole, and it was unguarded. So I grabbed my 9.5’ board and jumped in. The water was a deep blue and about 61 degrees. I drew the attention of some tourists, who stood around to watch, and a local newspaper reporter took photos and interviewed me because he’d never seen or heard of anyone doing that in the Blue Hole. It was exciting thinking that I was the first person to paddleboard there. I discovered a few days later that I ended up making the front page of that paper. What an experience, and something that I would not have seen if I had just flown to Lake Tahoe. Route 395 on the way to Tahoe is spectacular, and six days after leaving Ft. Lauderdale, we finally arrived. I was happy to see that my nice carbon fiber raceboard had arrived without damage, since I’d had it on my roof through desert temperatures. Race the Lake of the Sky is a two-day event. The first day consists of SUP Cross sprint races and a five-mile race with buoy turns. The second day is the 14.4-mile Emerald Bay distance race,

which interested me the most. Tahoe is incredible, especially coming from flat, tropical Florida. I also had my boys with me, so I thought it would be nice to devote all attention to them on Saturday. I signed Bodhi up for the SUP Cross race, and he enjoyed it. The Saturday races ended up being exciting for spectators, and even though I was itching to paddle, it was fun just to watch. I’d never seen that many people race at once. I was trying to bottle up that excitement to use for the following day’s race. Racing the 14.4-mile race was everything that I’d hoped it would be. I’d been stuck in a car for six days and I was dying to paddle. I was a little nervous about the elevation, and also the fact that I’d really not trained much at all. I felt great the entire paddle to Emerald Bay. When I got there, I tried to take in some of the beauty of the water, the surrounding mountains, and the island. The elevation really hit me in the last few miles. My lungs began aching, something I’d never felt before in any race. I slowed down and focused just on making it to the finish line. Three women passed me in that time, but what was most important to me was just finishing. I really had to focus in on the finish line flags. When I got to the finish, my hands and legs were a bit cramped, maybe from dehydration. My lungs were hurting and I couldn’t have a proper conversation with anyone or stand up for about an hour. Considering how bad I felt at the end and how little I had trained, I was pretty happy with my time of three hours, eighteen minutes. With the race over, I wanted to spend some time in Tahoe hiking, fishing and exploring with Bodhi and Jack. One thing that I wanted to do was paddle into Emerald Bay and really be able to hang out and enjoy the beauty. So we drove to D.L. Bliss State Park in Tahoe, and then paddled several miles to Emerald Bay because it is not accessible by car. We also went to Sand Harbor Park with its beautiful rocky coves and clear water filled with giant boulders. Bodhi spent hours climbing and jumping from the boulders. On the last day in Tahoe, we went to a trout fishing farm. It was free, and you just pay for what you catch. Bodhi caught five goodsized trout. We took them to McDuff’s Restaurant, where they take what you catch and prepare it three different ways, served on a platter with vegetables and french fries. Jack usually won’t eat fish, but we told him that the fried fish was chicken. Covered with ketchup, he didn’t know the difference and quite happily ate it. After Lake Tahoe, we hit the road for the Hoover Dam. Last school year, Bodhi had done a school project about the Hoover Dam, so he was excited to see it in real life. It was 111 degrees that day, so after we toured the power plant, I drove down to a place on Lake Mohave and we went for a quick paddle. Then, we headed towards the ocean and my new baby niece. I spent the next morning surfing at Doheny Beach, and then drove to San Diego. My parents were renting a house for two weeks in Ocean Beach, along with the parents of my brother’s fiancée but there was an extra bedroom for me and the boys. We spent about six days in Ocean Beach, checking out the seals in La Jolla, paddling in Cardiff, teaching Jack how to body board, squeezing in yoga and enjoying time with the family. My brother, Brendan, told me he was going to take me surfing at a place called Sunset Cliffs. We had to go down a steep staircase and then climb off a rocky ledge on the cliff to jump into the ocean. Now, I’m an adventurous person, but climbing down a rocky ledge and jumping into

the ocean with a stand-up board is far different from doing it with a lightweight surfboard. I was the only stand-up surfer, and the only girl. The waves were considerable bigger than I was used to, and I had my first experience getting launched up into the air after not quite making it over an incoming overhead wave. After surfing, I made it up the cliff without a scratch, thanks to my brother. But then I sprained my ankle stepping out of the shower across the street. Ah well, it was an adventure. The Grand Canyon was our next stop. It’s strange when you are driving to the Desert View at Grand Canyon. You’re in a forest, driving along the road, and then all of a sudden, there’s an opening in the trees and you see it — the Grand Canyon. I parked the van and we jumped out for a closer look. I was instantly grateful that we made the drive to see it. I heard somebody mention that Lake Powell was less than three hours away. I didn’t know what was there, but I remembered a few people telling me that it was somewhere worth visiting, so off we went.

When I got to Page, Arizona, I wasn’t sure what was there or where to go (besides that there was a lake called Lake Powell). I stopped to buy the boys pizza for lunch, and when I looked across the street, it was like the clouds parted, angels sung, and heaven was shining a light down. There was a paddleboard shop across the street! We went across the street to Lake Powell Paddleboards, and Jordan, the owner, gave me great advice like where to paddle, what to see, where to eat, and where to park the van to sleep. As soon as she showed me the photos of Antelope Canyon, I knew I had to stay the night and explore the next day. In the morning, we set out to Lake Powell to explore Antelope Canyon by paddleboard. As we paddled, we looked at the red, weather-carved canyon walls next to us, and stopped every now and then to climb on them and swim. A couple of tour boats came in while we were paddling through, but they couldn’t go back into the really narrow parts so we were alone deep in to the canyon. For a while, all we could hear was the sound of gentle splashes from our paddles echoing through the canyon. It was a huge highlight of the trip. We headed towards Texas next. On the way in to Austin, we stopped at Longhorn Caverns, caves created by an underground river over thousands of years. Native Americans used to use the caves, and the caves were also a Confederate refuge during the Civil War. That evening, we paddled to Congress Avenue Bridge as the sunlight faded. We were waiting for the largest bat colony in North America to emerge for their nightly feeding. We packed so much into this part of the trip – Hamilton Pool, a hike down to the Pedernales River, paddling in the city with Casey Gotcher of SUP Gladiator race fins. As much as I would’ve liked to hang out and see more

of Austin, I decided to head home to Florida. Bodhi, Jack and I were starting to get homesick and miss Neil. We had been traveling for nearly four weeks. We flew through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, but I decided to stop at a place I’d been wanting to visit for a long time – Weeki Wachee, Florida. The Weeki Wachee River flows about seven miles from a spring to the Gulf of Mexico. The water from the spring is crystal clear and is a constant 74 degrees all year round. You feel as if you’re paddling down an exotic jungle river – we saw turtles, a water snake and then a huge manatee swam right underneath us, feeding on the grass. We took turns jumping from rope swings into deeper parts of the river. What a fantastic conclusion to our journey. This road trip created memories that my children and I will never forget. Our experiences made all the hours of driving worthwhile. I am so grateful for stand-up paddling; it fueled this adventure, and it has awakened an athlete in me that I wasn’t aware existed. I hope that seeing my photos and hearing my stories inspires people to be more independent and adventurous. Because when you step out of your comfort zone, that’s when amazing things happen. When we return to school and people ask us what we did on our summer vacation, we’ll have to ask, “Do you have a few hours?”

IT’S THE TOPIC OF THE HOUR — can moms really have it all? Striking that elusive balance between kids, work and play is no small feat. But for Jessica D’Aleo, having it all is easy, as long as she can get on the water. It’s where she works and trains, where her boys are happiest, where her family thrives and where she finds herself. The Florida Panhandle is perfect for everything from training to spending quality time with her boys.

A Typical Day For us, the water is the balance. Every day begins with the water — is it calm and glassy? Slightly choppy or downright moody? Some days it doesn’t matter what mood the water is in — I’m just in the mood to paddle. That’s what I like about stand-up paddling. We are blessed to live in a unique place where water is accessible within minutes. We can hit the water on the fly and then jump right back into the work of the day. During the summer, every day starts with a short person asking how the surf looks. I don’t mean they ask after breakfast — my boys ask upon opening their eyes first thing in the morning. We live on the Gulf Coast so good surf comes rarely, but we don’t care. Flat means great training for me. Shore break? Pack the boogie board. Breaking on the second sand bar? Load up the boards! Whatever we get, we know it’ll be fun. Generally, we hit the beach three to four times a week but we are on the water seven days a week. We are so spoiled with the Gulf and the bay at our disposal. My work teaching Paddle Core Fitness and beginner lessons at YOLO Board Adventures keeps us connected to the water and people all summer long. It’s truly the most satisfying lifestyle. The Job Description I’ve worked and ultimately managed YOLO Board Adventures Sandestin for three seasons. I have the privilege of introducing our guests to paddling — most of them are first-time paddlers. This year is amazing, we’ve had many returning guests who paddled with us in previous seasons. We get super stoked when guests return because it was the highlight of their vacation last year. I teach private lessons as well as Paddle Core Fitness and at the end of each session, I always feel a satisfaction that is hard to explain. Our guests come away with a new appreciation for the water or renewed spirit for exercise. Water just has that effect on people. At YOLO Board Sandestin, we offer unique fitness opportunities. Paddle Core Fitness is offered twice a week early in the morning. This is a great opportunity for our guests to learn all about SUP and the fitness aspect of the sport. Most of our clients are resort guests whom have never paddled before. Experience is not required to join our classes; we know anyone can learn to paddle in a short period of time and our classes are designed for all levels of fitness. YOLO Board Adventures also offers YOLO Yoga. Our staff offers an introductory paddle stroke lesson and our yoga instructor guides our guests through a session any skill level will enjoy. I love to sneak into this session. Yoga on a YOLO board is amazing! I feel recharged after every session and our guests rave about the experience. We also provide a YOLO Board Mileage Builder Training Session. This session is free and we train every Wednesday evening. We provide an opportunity for all paddlers at any level to train together. Wednesday consists of free coaching tips for our new YOLO board family members and a bit harder push for those that have been with us a while. It’s a work at your own pace session designed to build a sense of community and promote well being. There’s nothing like group training which is why our Wednesday night session is so popular. Connecting with water and people!

One of the benefits of being a Yolo Board rider? Work time is also play time.

Her Boys & Their Waves They love, I mean they live to surf. They beg to be checked out of school to surf. Their love for surfing comes from our relationship with YOLO and their very first experience with surfing. My boys were seven and two the summer we enrolled them in a Billabong Surf Camp. We had just bought our first YOLO board and my oldest son wanted to learn to surf. We spent a week at camp soaking up the stoke. The instructors were awesome and the boys loved surfing so much we spent the rest of that summer surfing grom waves with the Billabong boys and paddling our YOLO boards. If there’s surf or even just a little bump that’s fun for groms, we’re making the time to get to the beach. The boys have a couple mentors they surf with periodically during the year. I still sometimes push my eight year old into waves. It’s fun for all of us and I know one day in the not-so-near future he won’t need me to give him a nudge. It’s the YOLO spirit — the laundry can wait, but my boys won’t be boys forever. As for my tennis pro/SUP surfer husband, he’ll shift his entire day to surf. He’s dedicated to his first love of teaching tennis, but look out, he’s a marathon surfer. When he took up SUP surfing, he was determined to perfect it. It’s nothing for him to surf nonstop for four or five hours – he’s a machine. On our days off, we are on the water. Surf or not, we are hooked. The YOLO Story I’m a competitive creature. I played every sport I could growing up. When Jeff Archer asked me to join the YOLO team, I was honored. Every season I look at the race schedule and try to expand my racing beyond the local races. But with two active kids and my oldest beginning to play more tennis competitively, I pretty much take a back seat to their ambitions. I make every effort to support their athletic and academic goals and I carve out time to train and race. We try to find the balance – it’s not all about mom and it’s not all about the kids. Her Take on SUP It’s grown so much since I started, and it’s exciting to be part of the growth. SUP fitness and yoga is definitely on the rise. Women in particular are the driving force. Most of my clients are women looking for a way to shake up their workout. Destination paddling and eco-tours are certainly going to be more and more popular too.

“It’s amazing what a little time gliding on the water can do for the

body

and

spirit.”

Her Words of Wisdom Keep it real and keep it simple — your lifestyle will be abundant, rewarding and satisfying. Figure out how to involve the kids and teach them how to get the gear ready to head out. Plan meals and snacks ahead so you always have healthy choices for everyone. Being on the water is like therapy too, so use it to decompress and recharge. It’s amazing what a little time gliding on the water can do for the body and spirit. It’s satisfying when it all comes together. Time on the water with family and friends and time on the water just for yourself is the ideal balance for any mom.

With a training format approved by the American Counsel on Exercise

and training that includes the WPA level 1 Certification, Florida’s Lazy Dog PaddleYoga is bringing credibility to SUP yoga one event at a time.

DON’T BE FOOLED — the name and game behind Lazy Dog Paddle Yoga is anything but lazy. It’s the natural succession of Lazy Dog, the kayak and paddleboard business that singlehandedly introduced SUP to Florida’s Key West. In 2008, the idea to incorporate SUP yoga was born, fittingly enough, on the water during an idle conversation about headstands between Lazy Dog owner, Sue Cooper and Lazy Dog Paddle Yoga creator, Tara McCabe.

“Yoga is physically appealing in its delivery — we see many beautiful poses caught on camera both on and off the water.”

LAZY DOGS AND NOCQUA LIGHT UP THE NIGHT AT HIGGS BEACH.

Shortly thereafter, Tara began teaching SUP yoga and within a few summers, as stand-up paddling began to really ignite, she found herself fielding requests from area yoga instructors and studios for information about the best boards, tips for anchoring, insurance and more. “Collectively, Sue, Trish Miller and I decided it was a good opportunity to put together a manual and a training format as a way of introducing the sport of SUP to the yoga community,” Tara explains. They submitted the manual to the American Counsel on Exercise (ACE), and Lazy Dog Certification was officially born. “Our goal is to offer knowledge so a yoga instructor is able to teach a safe, effective and accessible SUP yoga class,” says Tara. “It begins with proper SUP technique and skill sets that allow the trainees to paddle properly and to be able to offer this information to the beginner.” Training covers SUP equipment as well, including appropriate boards and materials, paddles, fins and safety gears, and includes practical applications of water safety and rescue techniques for different situations. “Weather knowledge is crucial,” Tara says, “so we discuss variables including reading the weather, recognizing changes in the weather due to upcoming squalls, understanding local weather patterns, tides, currents and rip current awareness.” Additional topics covered in training and certification include chart exploration, included to help trainees become more aware of the cardinal directions, which helps in choosing a location when dependent on different environment variables, and anchor or mooring set up. “We are bringing SUP to the yoga community,” says Tara, “not trying to teach someone how to do or teach yoga. That can’t be achieved in three days. We are adapting yoga to SUP, and trainees must come with either a yoga teacher training under their belt or a very strong yoga practice.” Trish Miller, who developed this training program with Tara, puts it well: “As yoga teachers, we want to bring credibility to the sport of SUP.” Think of it as continuing education for yoga teachers — an adaptive practice for yoga practitioners. “Yoga teachers leading SUP yoga classes must know proper SUP technique and be able to pass these skills onto their students while maintaining a safe environment on the water,” says Tara. “Teaching a yoga class on the water takes much more preparation and physical stamina than walking into a studio space.” To account for this, “we spend time adapting yoga postures to be safely practiced on boards,” Tara explains. “Yoga is physically appealing in its delivery — we see many beautiful poses caught on camera both on and off the water. It is still, however, a spiritual path. V1N3

The poses are meant to keep our bodies healthy, flexible and strong while staying focused on proper breathing to ultimately find stillness both in the physical body and in the mind. This is very much a challenge to many practitioners on land, never mind being on an unstable surface like a stand-up paddleboard.” Lazy Dog training is designed to cultivate an awareness of proper asana alignment while educating instructors on safe teaching methods complete with proper cueing to keep students injury-free. “Many poses are brought back to the basics as we need to pay more attention to grounding, alignment, proper weight distribution and balance for poses like warrior two, crescent lunge or down dog split,” explain Tara. “Alignment should not be compromised just to find a way into a desired posture. Modifications must be given so that SUP yoga is accessible to all practitioners and not just to the advanced student beautifully floating their way into an inversion. I do love inversions on the board, but they are not appropriate for everyone.” It isn’t just the students that benefit from Lazy Dog’s training. “We close the training with a business discussion that turns into a round table with trainees sharing information acquired from running their own yoga businesses,” Tara says. “I also try to take advantage of the various members of the SUP tribe that I have come to know and love (who may be in town for the races that many of our trainings are scheduled around) so that trainees are provided with different opportunities and information regarding the SUP industry. We become a family by the end of the three days and I always feel so honored to share this path with all of the amazing yogis whose journey leads them to paddle.”

RIVIERA 12’6” COASTAL CRUISER

RIVIER A SELECT

With Riviera Select Construction, we’ve found the balance between light weight and unmatched durability. RSC is a combination of carbon fiber, fiberglass, bamboo and a layer of Riviera’s proprietary material, SYNTEK. These materials are then bonded with epoxy resin in a heated/pressurized mold to create the strongest SUP we’ve ever made. RSC is available on the Riviera 10’6” and 11’6” boards. Dimensions: 11’6” x 33” x 4 7/8” Volume: 210.8L

The 12’6” Coastal Cruiser is designed to be the ultimate all around board. Flat-water, downwinders, rough conditions or the surf, this board can handle it — and handle it well. Six leash plugs make it easy to tie down all your gear on longer paddles. Dimensions: 12’6” x 30” x 5 1/4” Volume: 239.6L

RIVIER A RP-12’6”

The RP Series raceboards are designed for speed in flat to open ocean conditions, with a rocker designed to pick up any trace of bump and cut through the water efficiently. The RP 12’6’ features a squaretail for stability and an added vee out the tail for the efficiency of a pin tail. The mild cockpit puts your feet closer to the water, lowering your center of gravity for a shorter paddle, increasing cadence, torque and speed off the line. Available in 28” & 26” Widths

VOYAGER CL ASSIC

The Voyager Classic is the same shape as the 2014 Voyager, but available in bamboo construction for added strength. This year’s Voyager shape has been refined, making it more efficient while maintaining stability.
