GATHERING OF THE WATER TRIBE On the island of Oahu at Ala Moana Beach Park is a spot where the water is almost always calm, protected by an outer reef, a place where the magic happens at sunset. Here is where the women of Camp Samata began their experience on the water and ended it: coming from all corners of the United States, bringing with them their strengths and weaknesses. Too often we build walls around ourselves in the midst of grief, pain, and challenges and everything life throws at us, but these eight women came with only the expectation of grounding, connecting and learning on the water. They left rich with experience and connections that will last a lifetime.

SAFE SUP Risk Management With more people on SUP’s in the water along coastlines around the world’s beaches, lakeshores, and open waters, the rise in injuries and drowning seem to be on the rise. The stoke and excitement supersede the awareness factor. Lack of precaution for equipment, for weather conditions and the assumption that “everything will be alright” because of one’s feeling of standing on water and being invincible takes away the thought process of “Safe SUP”. So what is “Safe SUP”? Even if you know how to swim, have been paddling for several months, can stand on a board or have caught a wave, does that mean you’re safe on the water? Here are several useful tips for both your safety and for the safety of others: There’s nothing wrong with wearing a leash. If you are riding waves and you fall, at least your board has a smaller chance of hitting unassuming beach-goers and hopefully other wave riders. In the ocean or lakes where conditions may change especially in colder waters, a leash could save you from hypothermia or drowning from exhaustion trying to reach your board or the shoreline. You’d be surprised how fast a board can get away from you in the wind. Don’t be surprised. PFD’s or personal flotation devices are an excellent way to stay afloat - especially when touring and exploring, racing, or just doing simple family outings on a quick mile coastal paddle. Also, assure you have your PFD on correctly and know how to inflate it. What good is it if you don’t know how it works? Avoid attaching it to your board; PFD is meant to be worn. Because if your board gets away from you, so will your PFD and then you’re in trouble. Wave riding knowledge – if you have no history or know-how of how to be in the line up be sure you get a working understanding of the established etiquette rules as surfers see them. SUP surf etiquette will prevent any bad vibes or injuries in the water and make your time more enjoyable.
RISK MANAGEMENT IS NO JOKE, PADDLERS NEED TO CONS TANTLY ASSESS THE WATERS AND SITUATIONS AROUND THEM. ANNA LEVESQUE AND C ASI RYNKOWSKI KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFE SUP FOR WATER ADVENTURES.
Weather awareness is a really good way to understand what kind of conditions you are going to encounter and deal with before you get to the shoreline. There are weather and wind forecasts for most areas around the world on the internet. Most quick weather change mishaps usually happen when conditions change. A calm lake can turn into your worst nightmare within minutes, and a flat glassy day at the beach could turn into either a tidal current nightmare or a wild day of crushing waves anywhere in the world. Finally, ask someone knowledgeable before you paddle out into any body of water. Most water-trained men and women will be glad to give you good, solid, positive advice. Have fun out in the water but practice risk management understanding Safe SUP every time you paddle out. — REID INOUYE

STRONG MUSCLES FOR PADDLE PERFORMANCE BY ANNE LEVESQUE
SHOULDER HEALTH IS KEY FOR PADDLING PERFORMANCE and comfort whether you’re a beginner or a pro. Paddlers tend toward chronically contracted pectoral muscles that pull the shoulders forward, resulting in upper back muscles that tend to be chronically lengthened. This imbalance in shoulder alignment can lead to a greater risk of shoulder discomfort and injury. Here are some of the key poses that I practice to help me strengthen my shoulders and reduce the risk of injury. Shoulder Blade Push-Ups
This pose moves the shoulders through their full range of motion and strengthens the upper back. Come to forearm or full plank position on your elbows. Squeeze your shoulder blades together on your back. Next, press your forearms into the floor and stretch your shoulder blades apart pressing your upper back toward the ceiling. Repeat these motions for 10 reps. Isolate the movement in your shoulder blades without bringing movement into your lower body Spider Cobra
This is one of my favorite poses for strengthening the upper back and gently stretching the pectorals. Lie on your stomach with your hands off your mat, up on your fingertips, elbows bent toward the ceiling and forehead on the floor. Press your fingertips into the floor to squeeze your shoulder blades back on your back lifting the fronts of your shoulders away from the floor. Breathe easily and deeply through your nose. Next, press your fingertips into the floor to draw your chest slightly forward and slightly up to get a little lift, but don’t lose the squeeze and strength in your upper back. Hold for 5 breaths.

Dolphin Pose
Dolphin pose is great for strengthening the upper back, opening the shoulders and strengthening the core. It also stretches the hamstrings and is a good prep for inversions. Start on your hands and forearms with your hands clasped. Curl your toes under and press your hips up toward the sky. You may have to walk your feet toward your hands a few steps. Press the floor away with your forearms, draw your shoulder blades toward one another and down your back. Release the head toward the floor. Hold for 5 deep and easy breaths.

FITNESS AND MENOPAUSE Slow and Steady Will Get You Ready BY C ASI RYNKOWSKI
MENOPAUSE AND FITNESS. There I said it. If you are thirtysomething and thought I was going to say that other “M” word, don’t click close yet. This is important information for you too, especially in your 30’s. The more you do now could mean less work in the gym for you later. Less work equals good. Right? Now I know I’m asking a lot. I’m waving the white flag saying, ‘Mayday! Mayday! Your ship will go down too!’ And you’re thinking, ‘Hell that’s ten years away!’ Let’s start with this: perimenopause symptoms can be felt as early as late 30’s. Women between the age of 30-40’s begin to lose .5-1% of bone density and muscle annually. Did I get your attention yet? Here are the brief menopause facts without going into all the symptoms. Menopause typically happens between the ages 50-54. Perimenopause can start as early as late 30’s but more commonly appears 40-45. Weight gain, specifically in your midsection, happens. Also known as the “midsection spread”. That word alone should not be allowed. It’s a terrible title. Evidence has shown: decreasing levels of estrogen directly affect metabolism and our body’s hold on to fat storage. Our strength and muscle
tone declines more rapidly as well. Sleepless nights and stress levels contribute to the weight gain. And then there is the bone density loss and increased risk for heart disease. It all doesn’t seem fair. Fact — you need to build a strong body now so you won’t have to go through the painful process of starting later after the proverbial S*@$t hits the fan. Many women in their 30’s are in the throes of bearing and raising children. Forging their career paths in the big world. Finding time to take on a battle that feels far away may seem silly but it is extremely smart. Weight training, weight-bearing and fat burning cardio exercise are key to avoiding the “midsection spread” - again TERRIBLE WORDS. Changing how your body responds to the drop in estrogen levels now is the only way to take on this battle. And you want to go into this battle wearing armor, riding a stallion and carrying a big sword. Not naked trotting on a poodle with a steak knife.
Slow and steady weight training before the onset of menopause is critical.
Adding muscle before menopause will help keep your metabolism revving. It takes time to build muscle. Yes, muscle does weigh more than fat and takes up less space. You can eventually shrink in inches while still gaining muscle weight. This process takes time. Unlike the high school boys in the gym who like to flex and claim, “l’ve put on 20 pounds of muscle in three months.” Yeah? No! A good percentage of that is fat, buddy. It takes some serious commitment to weight training and a pristine diet (no Starbucks treats runs allowed) to just put on .25 pounds of pure muscle. That is not reality for many of us. Slow and steady weight training before the onset of menopause is critical. Weight-bearing exercise will help slow bone density loss that quickens in peri and menopausal women. “Weight-bearing” means carrying one’s body weight in an activity. Walking, jogging, hiking is just the ticket. Skip the pool and bike. Standing for your weight training session counts too. Challenge yourself and train while standing on a balance trainer. Our balance also declines as we age. Stop the madness! Society loves to blame our mental states on all the “M” words. At least we have something to blame. It is a fact that all those hormones effect your mental well-being, motivation and drive. Exercise will help elevate this. If you wait until you are at the lowest of your mental lows the battle is up hill. It’s kind of a vicious cycle. You’re depressed, tired and don’t want to work out. Any sort of movement feels like you are pulling a Mack truck along and you’d much rather self medicate with a cheese danish. If you can conquer this battle before menopause sets in you will be ahead of the game and you will be rewarded with a mighty dose of endorphins: The thing that helps improve your mental state.

goodhealth EARTH ELEMENT S
GET GROUNDED BY SCOTT ES TRADA
The term “grounded” is synonymous with someone or something solid, rooted, calm, balanced and dependable. We may not think of it in terms of health but if we are open to it, “grounding to the earth” is probably the best medicine ever for all that ails us and to keep us in check so modern stresses don’t take us down.
A MAN NAMED CLINT OBER, a pioneer of the cable business in its early days, became aware that most people walk around insulated from the natural energies the Earth has to give us for very long periods of time. Ober believed we don’t make contact with Earth elements with bare skin to receive its energetic frequency. So after his own health crisis he set in motion a mission to raise awareness to how this age-old natural benefit works to guard our health. He began making grounding pad products for people to reap the benefits of walking barefoot on the Earth from an indoor space while they work and sleep. Read all the details here: grounded.com/what-is-earthing In a nutshell, the Earth in all its glory is the biggest unlimited supplier of negative ions. When we contact the soil, water, sand, rock or grass with our bare skin we are instantly flooded with these negatively-charged ions that balance our system and function at the same time, absorbing the positively-charged ions we hold as a byproduct of stress, chemicals, poor food, tainted water, poor air quality, radiation, EMF rays and anything that would upset our internal balance and cause stress - including negative thoughts! We as people who love the water and spending time in it and on it to play and move are reaping a huge benefit over those that don’t by simply making contact with the conductive element of lakes, rivers and oceans. Bringing the science and awareness of the Earthing or Grounding technology into focus will help us make a point to touch more of the Earth’s elements more often, even in colder climates with the use of grounding sheets for beds while we sleep, pads for workstations and grounding patches for quick mobile solutions while traveling. We can help so many people that suffer from a lack of health and wellbeing just by showing them the value of making consistent contact with the Earth and reestablishing the connection they have lost. I encourage everyone to watch the movie made about how this story came to be and the incredible results that have been documented: youtube.com/embed/cRW0XO2xWn4?rel=0

Think about the performance aspects of grounding. Highly anti-inflammatory effects for faster recovery, muscle repair, stamina, immune boosting, circulation and many more! Combine grounding while you do focused breath work and oxygenation of the cells and you now have an incredible combo to keep your system in a peak state! In this time of ever-changing technology that dominates our lives, wisdom says we must unplug to “reconnect to what is true and lasting. The Earth is the first medicine and always has our back. diy DING REPAIR
FAST TIME FIX WITH SOL AREZ BY REID INOUYE
ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS I’ve learned over the years is to carry the quick fix Solarez Ding Repair Kit. It’s simple to use, hardly any mess and the curing time of fewer than three minutes makes it easy for you to get back in the water. Utilizing the solar sunrays, this one part epoxy resin keeps the process quick, simple and clean. (solarez.com/sup-repair)

step 1
Using the 1-ounce tube kit, use the rough sand block enclosed in the kit and sand open your ding, in this case, its a crack in the nose. step 2
Make sure the prepped area is cleaned and ready for a quick dab of Solarez and the area is roughed open. step 3
Apply Solarez until the bubbles release all the air while applying with the tube. step 4
Reapply one more dab while Step Three is drying and allow the area to harden and seal. This should take less than two minutes in sunlight. step 5
The Solarez is now hardening and once it forms into a hard gel, use the softer grit side of your block and shape the resin into the form of the nose. Once cured, apply a shine coat to give the repair a cleaner look. step 6
It doesn’t have to look perfect as your primary concern is getting out int he water. Within 10 minutes, you are paddling back out into your local waterway.

Naish took this opportunity to get back to the essence of photography. Their Alana photo shoot is grouped together with everyone, but for this, they wanted to branch out and have a shoot dedicated just to the women. To get away from the daily distraction and go to a remote location dedicating the adventure to having fun and exploring new areas rarely seen. As founder Robby Naish says, "Whatever the reason, whatever the impulse, wherever the water takes you . . . this is your moment. Make it extraordinary." While photo shoots often are centered on the product, it was the group dynamic that made this day special. The party consisted of both new and established faces with Mariko Strickland-Lum, Ashley Baxter, Annie Reickert, Molly Payne and Jess Brazil.
WHEREVER THE WATER TAKES YOU ...
this is y r moment
Mariko Strickland-Lum, who hails from Kauai, has been a Naish team rider for some years and is an incredible athlete. She played D-1 collegiate soccer and semi-professionally in California before moving back home to Hawaii. Her love for stand-up paddling began in 2007, and her competitive spirit took over from there. When she isn’t competing in various SUP events throughout Hawaii, she runs Adventure Fit Kauai with her husband and is always advocating everyone to get outside and have fun on the water as an incredible ambassador of the water woman lifestyle. Ashley Baxter, whose infectious smile is always spreading aloha wherever she goes, is always up for an adventure. While it may be younger brother, Connor, who carries most of the fame for the Baxter’s in the watersport world, Ashley is eternally bringing the good times. Strickland-Lum, who often teams with Baxter on Naish photo shoots, never takes their time spent together for granted. “I always look forward to these photo shoots because it means I get to hang out with the carefree, passionate, and spontaneous Ashley Baxter!” She and her father, Baxter — who captained this day — are both an incredible duo, full of the knowledge of the Hawaiian Islands and surrounding waters. Many years ago they even rescued Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, who they found floating in the deep water after his outrigger

canoe capsized miles offshore. Her friendly and welcoming demeanor is consistently welcoming all to join the fun. Annie Reickert, who is one of Naish’s up and coming team riders, and is quickly gaining notoriety and building an impressive resume in the stand-up paddle world, was eager at the opportunity to explore. “I spend most of my time racing and surfing, so slowing it down and paddling the breathtaking coastline with them was special” recounted Reickert, appreciating the moment to step back and enjoy the fruits of her labors. She and Strickland-Lum had a great dynamic from one stand-up paddle athlete to another. “Before our adventure even started I was shown so much aloha from Annie and her Mom, picking me up and insisting on packing me lunch,” recalled Strickland-Lum, “Annie, the little sister of the group, is a very humble and respectful young lady who goes with the flow, but don't let her get hungry!” Joining them for the first time, was swimwear designer/ entrepreneur Molly Payne. Payne hails from Lahaina and comes from a family of watersports enthusiasts with older brother Dusty, who is not only one of the best surfers from Maui but also the world. A welcomed addition to the group, Payne and the other women quickly bonded over the day. “She's not just super cute but also very thoughtful, goal driven, and a sharp entrepreneur. We talked about travel,

relationships, and life just about the entire boat ride back to Maui, which I thoroughly enjoyed,” remarked Stickland-Lum. Last but not least amongst the girls was yoga instructor Jess Brazil who left everyone in awe of her incredible yoga poses on the Alana Naish boards. “When I was invited to join the adventure for Naish’s Alana line I was in heaven. This trip took me to a new edge. It was so special to be able to share my passion with other adventure enthusiasts," Brazil said. “Everyone was filled with so much passion and yet so kind, humble and down to earth; always ready for the next possibility. Ashley and I instantly connected and began playing around with some partner yoga stretches.” Both Payne and Brazil were incredible assets not just for the dynamic that they brought to this amazing group, but also for their fresh perspective and real feedback on the Naish Alana line. “Although she and Molly did not have as much experience with stand-up paddling as the rest of us, they both smashed it!” said Strickland-Lum about Brazil and Payne expanding their stand up paddling abilities. “Perhaps it was the combination of their positive attitudes, athleticism, and comfort on the new Naish Alana line.” While this day was truly all about the women, the boards complimented and enhanced the experience. The brand new Quest Alana was a favorite for its stability and ability to perform
a variety of different functions. “The Alana Quest was the perfect board for this type of adventure,” exclaimed Reickert, “it’s stable and easy to maneuver.” The 9’8” was a favorite for its ease of use and stable platform making it a great SUP-Yoga board. Featuring a displacement bow, the 12’ guided the girls straight and true as they toured a remote and rugged coastline. While it can be easy to get lost in the modern world on Maui and Oahu, there are still portions of Hawaii where time stands still and little has changed over the centuries. Exploring these remote locations, rarely visited can be difficult, which makes SUP the perfect form of transportation to fully explore and appreciate the beautiful and rugged coastline of Hawaii’s outlying islands. “Being on a SUP gives such a different perspective of a place. Instead of being an observer, I feel like I become part of the environment. It allows me to get to out of the way places and off the beaten path,” said Reickert “Exploring on a SUP is a little like hiking on water. We paddled by towering sea cliffs, jumped into crystal blue water and snorkeled, pulled onto secluded beaches, and just relaxed on our boards and chatted.” One of the highlights of the day was exploring a secluded lagoon surrounded by coconut palms. “I felt as if we transported to Tahiti. Coconuts bobbed in the water, and tiny fish swam at the surface. We were able to explore the entire lagoon on our boards. It was pretty magical.” V3N4

It was a day full of adventure and laughter – this was their moment. A girl's trip with everything you could want: great boards, pristine water, tropical sun and good camaraderie. When the impulse takes you, listen and go. Make it extraordinary. Take Annie's advice straight to heart, “I often marvel at how much the sport of stand-up paddling has impacted my life,” reflected Reickert, “I have met an incredible variety of unique and adventurous people and have been to beautiful places that I wouldn’t have been to otherwise. When you are pregnant, the world looks at you with different eyes. People expect you to change your lifestyle instantly — as if you now have this condition that requires taking extra care of yourself and the growing baby in your belly. Of course, you want to adapt for the better (health and rest) for the both of you, but it is a very common thing to run into an overwhelming amount of opination of what you can and can’t do even if you lead an active lifestyle before being pregnant. Everyone has an opinion. The key thing to remember is — how much you change, is up to you. I believe it is important to keep doing the things that make you being you and keep you happy. My ocean sports were ‘those things’ for me. The Ocean is a big part of who I am. During my pregnancy, She was (and always is) my solid rock

at times when I experienced changes in mind and body caused by hormones. Mrs. Ocean gave me energy and happiness, keeping me stoked, strong, sane and confident. I am so happy that my baby experienced all this ‘goodness’ in my tummy as well! Babies ‘get’ things already way before their birth. This fluid bundle of positivity could not have gone unnoticed to him. This journey of my mindset is one I’d like to share on how I continued my ocean sports while expecting. Be honest with yourself. I stopped windsurfing. That is after I found out I was pregnant. I calculate that we conceived our expecting bundle of joy during the “Aloha Classic” at Hookipa Maui. We reached 8th place in the PWA event (Professional Windsurfing Association). In windsurfing my attitude is ‘all or nothing.’ And thus, I let it be. Surfing was enjoyable up until seven months for me. My husband Eric and I even made “The Pregg” the 8’0 maternity surfboard with belly concave! Stand-up paddling in waves on flatwater was the bomb and a saving grace. Up until a week before giving birth, I caught a few sanity waves and cruised the race board on flatwater. It was possible with my hubbies help; carrying my board up the beach and all. Adapting to my growing belly. My pre-pregnancy attitude was to go for it, not caring about crashing or completing a move. During my pregnancy I chose safety, and my intention shifted towards the enjoyment of the ocean. Rather I gracefully allowed things to happen instead of making

In California, seven months onwards, I rode the Converse 9’0” x 30” in the waves until the end and my 14’ x 25” race board on flat water. Common sense. Reading stories of other pregnant athletes continuing their sports, none of the mothers to be would learn a new
sport or be attempting to break personal records. Andrea Moller would surf Lanes on a six-foot (Hawaiian) day, eight months pregnant. Bethany Hamilton surfed Teahupoo six months pregnant. Some mermaids stopped their water time at four months and started hiking — staying healthy and stoked that way. The sessions I had were less and shorter than usual. I would listen to my body, energy levels, the state of mind and gut feeling. I have pulled out of events and canceled sessions when conditions would seem too much to take on. Catching waves was either yay or nay. “She who hesitates is lost.” a saying I believe in and use when I train, compete and enjoy my water time. Injuries happen more often when you hesitate. Go with the flow is the only way. Beach-walks, Prenatal yoga, and swimming were other ways for me to rejuvenate.

Opinions are like assholes; everyone has got one! You should hear some of the reactions I received being an expecting mermaid! This one guy texted my husband after seeing me surf: “Your wife is a freak surfing Marina while being pregnant!” The same guy (that barely knows us) told me a few weeks later “Don’t even consider being out there, you are in no shape to do so.” Of course, my answer was that he was in no shape to judge me or tell me what to do. People very close to me would also give me their fear and disapproval. In response, I asked them to have faith in me and trust my instincts. Sure, the fearful advice came from a kind heart wanting the best for me. Still, it was annoying and a bummer to me: the creator and protector of the bun. On the opposite, I was totally stoked on the support I received from my ocean peeps and family members. They shared the positive effects for mommy and baby the ocean provided and encouraged me to stay with it. Also, my doctor was on board with my lifestyle “keep doing what you are doing” was her answer when I asked her. “You know best what you can handle.” Your choice is up to you. I continued my beloved ocean sports, and I did not give them up out of fear. Living in fear is just not my life motto or an attitude I like to pass on to my baby. My wish for you, (pregnant or not) is to stay true to yourself and continue to do things you love. Do activities that make you happy and keep you balanced. You will know and feel what works for you. Stay smart.

INSPIRING, SPIRITUAL, EXCEPTIONAL, OHANA, INDESCRIBABLE, CONNECTION, SOUL-HEALING. When asked to describe their Camp Samata experience in one word, these are the words used by the participants, ranging in age from 36 to 63. Having facilitated women-specific whitewater paddling camps for over a decade, I’m no stranger to the magic these experiences create. However, when I read over the words they wrote, I was struck by the fact that none of them had much to do with paddling itself. The words describe how Camp Samata made them feel and how it helped them to connect to the water, to a deeper sense of self and each other.
TINA WHITESIDE FROM: Sacramento California; AGE: 41 PROFESSION: Swim coach and yoga teacher
Tina’s goals at Camp Samata were to gain more paddle experience. “I have an inflatable board that I haven’t had a chance to use yet, mainly because I’m not confident going out alone. I’m hoping post-camp that I’ll be ready to throw it into my car and head to the beach. I’m excited for the chance to race.”

PATRICIA CREIGER FROM: Marblehead Massachusetts; AGE: 41 PROFESSION: Single mom, Owner of North Shore Laser Center
and KYPAD
“I would like to learn to paddle surf and just laugh with great people.” Patricia came for the opportunity to do something for her – “As a single mother it’s difficult to do that and not feel guilty about it,” she shared. Patricia also shared her amazing recovery from a medical condition of shingles on the brain, which left her face partially paralyzed with little hope of recovery. Her strength and determination was visible during the week.
KIKI CAYTON JONES FROM: San Diego, California; AGE: 63 PROFESSION: Retired, world traveler
Kiki came to Camp Samata with no paddle experience but that didn’t stop her. “I really had been wanting to paddle board. I haven't spent much time in the water for years and I have the best memories growing up in the water and I always feel good when I am near/on the water.” Being the oldest in the group and no SUP experience it was exciting to see Kiki finish first in her age division for the SUP Race.
HEATHER GUNTHERBERG FROM: Williamsburg Virginia; AGE: 37 PROFESSION: Single Mom, Clinical Coordinator for Pharmacy
Services in an Ambulatory Healthcare Center
One of Heather’s main reasons for attending Camp Samata was to feel a sense of openness and freedom. To embrace the ability to breath deeply and ‘let go of everything that we hold onto without realizing it-all those daily stressors.' “I like to forgo expectations and be open-minded to whatever may come. I know that whatever happens on this adventure will lead to something great.”
MICHELLE CURRIER FROM: Bourne, Massachusetts; AGE: 44 PROFESSION: Wife, Mom, Paralegal
Michelle has always lead a very active lifestyle on the water from sailing to racing J35 sailboats, wakeboarding, SUP racing. Michelle wanted to learn to sup surf, how to time catch the wave correctly and improve on her open-ocean SUP and further her knowledge of her SUP race technique.
LINDSEY SORENSEN FROM: Honolulu, Hawaii; AGE: 36 PROFESSION: Wife, Mom, Scientist
Lindsey came prepared with some partial SUP experience, owning her own board but admitting that she still was well in the novice area. With her recent move to Honolulu she wanted to jump in and embrace her new environment. Lindsey shared her desires, “I really would like to get a good grip of fundamentals as well as my first introduction to the larger surf on Oahu. I’d love to be connected to the local community as we have just moved here for the next two years!” 58 Samata I V3N4

Casi’s enthusiasm coming to the camp was infectious. Her love for the water is evident and she desired to improve her SUP surf skills. As a BIC SUP Ambassador she wanted to help provide an amazing experience for each woman attending the camp.

Anna has been paddling for over 20 years, mostly in a whitewater kayak, and SUP’ing for the last five years. A key ingredient that sets Camp Samata apart in this unique way is the spirit of Aloha infused into every moment. Eric Keawe, a local Hawaiian SUP paddler from a long lineage of Hawaiian entertainers, was our guide to Aloha. He broke the word down this way: “‘alo’ means sharing/present moment, and ‘ha’ means life energy/breath/joy.” It’s a word widely known as a greeting, but it conveys so much more. Sharing the joy and honoring each other’s life energy was at the heart of Camp Samata. Aloha opened up the possibility of using SUP as a platform for experiencing the joy and life force, not only in the amazing waters of Hawaii but also of our inner landscape. When asked about the most impactful part of the trip, California resident Kiki Jones said, “Connections would have to be the most impactful experience of Camp Samata for me. Connections to the people, the land, the water, and the Aloha spirit.” A common passion for SUP is the seed out of which connection, confidence and courage grew throughout the week. Women encouraging and celebrating each other on and off the water allowed the whole group to go beyond old, limited perceptions of what was possible. Whether that was completing the Da Hui race in open
ocean swell, paddle surfing at Waikiki, learning the foundation for effective stroke technique with one of the fastest SUP racers in the world, or wearing a bathing suit that felt vulnerable due to body image perceptions. Every woman arrived as a solo traveler with unique goals and challenges. Every woman left sharing and receiving joy and life energy as part of a strong, confident and vibrant sisterhood. Camp Samata provided a supportive environment in which to explore different paddling venues, disciplines, and styles. The women participating arrived in Hawaii with varying skill levels and SUP experience. Some were experienced racers and surfers while others had never before paddled a SUP. Some people out there may have decided that the split in skill level would be a barrier to success, but not the Camp Samata crew. We thought of ourselves as Ohana, and that meant that every paddler was just as important as the next. This concept was embodied as we stood in a circle holding hands during our opening ceremonial Pule. In that circle, there was no separation. Travis Grant, one of the fastest SUP racers in the world, was no better and no worse than the least experienced paddler in the circle. We were all one,

honoring and supporting each other’s unique path on the water. We asked permission of the water spirits to play and gave thanks for the opportunity. “I loved seeing all the courageous women around me, each with their individual strengths, push themselves even further. Our group brought out the best in each other,” remarked Lindsey, a participant and a new resident of Honolulu. From Ala Moana Park to Waimea Bay to Waikiki, the blue waters of Hawaii and the Camp Samata support crew held the space for unlimited possibility. BIC SUP provided a full line of boards so that each woman had an appropriate board for their skill level and the paddle discipline of the day. and off the water. Reid Inouye, publisher of Samata Mag, made everything happen. Samata arranged a sweet house across the street from Shark’s Cove on the North Shore that we called home for the week. The food was delicious, healthy and freshly prepared. Boards were schlepped to and from the water so the participants could put their energy into paddling. They transported us in vans stopping at beautiful overlooks, beaches, ruins and points of interest. Upon arrival, greeting each camper, an abundant goodie bag filled with over $1500.00 worth of product from sponsors. Swimwear, activewear, watersport-friendly jewelry, skin and hair product, drybags, leashes, hats, travel towels and more. It felt like Christmas in July! The ladies wasted no time in trying on and using their new gear. Also, we got to spend an afternoon shopping at a few local shops that generously donated active wear to the participants of the camp. I’m pretty sure some of the ladies enjoyed that experience as much as they enjoyed the paddling! When asked about the most consequential moment of the camp, several participants cited the completion of the Da Hui Fourth of July race, an annual 5K from Sunset Beach to Waimea Bay. There’s also an eightmile pro race from Turtle Bay to Waimea Bay. The race has a reputation for being fun for everyone no matter your experience level or fitness level. When I first heard that a race was built into the camp, I was very resistant. In the past, I competed internationally in whitewater kayak extreme racing and freestyle. I had given up competition several years ago, and the thought of racing again was not appealing to me at all. What I realized as we were preparing for the race was that my lack of enthusiasm came from fear and selfdoubt. The thought of racing brought back anxieties of feeling not good enough and not measuring up to my personal expectations or the expectations of others. I had never competed just for fun, always

having a goal to attain. When I became aware of the reasons for my resistance to the race I was able to make different choices, change my attitude and let go of old belief patterns. Preparing and participating in the race as a group made the experience lighthearted and fun. Some of us joined the many racers who had chosen 4th of July-themed outfits for the race. There was a whole SUPsquatch team wearing red, white and blue tutus and tattoos! There was lots of laughter at the start of the race and people enjoying the beautiful day, each other and the water. Inouye had helped us to scout the race course from the beach on previous days, and we also did a practice run on a section of the course. We had fantastic support with our private jet ski following us, and an additional experienced SUPer sweeping the group. As Tina Whiteside, a newcomer to SUP and California resident reflected, “I never felt alone during the entire race. There was always someone connected with Camp Samata within

eyesight. The fact the staff kept me under a watchful eye gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone.” Circling up for the ceremonial opening Pule with 600 other paddlers was very moving for me. I’ve competed in hundreds of competitions throughout my 20-plus years of paddling, and this was the first time that I witnessed so many paddlers showing reverence for the spirits of the water and the land. It was also meaningful for other women in the group, including Kiki, “All those people in that huge circle communicating with and praying to the Hawaiian ancestral gods. Powerful!!” At that moment I realized that Aloha wasn’t just a greeting, it was a lifestyle. As Inouye said to me, "The first rule is that you always ask for permission, the second rule is that you always give thanks. Aloha." Lining up at the start line in the middle of such a big crowd was thrilling. Paddling in the deep blue ocean amid the swell was

life changing. I remembered how Grant had talked to us the first day about connecting with the ocean and flowing/dancing with the currents. His words kept circling through my mind, as well as his tips for a faster forward stroke. I kept looking around, connecting with the water and looking where I wanted to go. What locals had said about it being the most fun SUP race on Earth was true. There were families and paddlers of all shapes, sizes and skill levels out on the water. It was a big race Ohana. As Michelle Currier, an avid racer from Cape Cod reflected, “From the ceremonial Pule start to realizing I was racing in Hawaii on the North Shore, to seeing a group of women complete this race and push themselves outside of their comfort zone – was incredible." Volunteers caught our boards as we came into the beach so that we could run up the sand hill to the finish line. I was pleasantly surprised by how spry my legs felt after almost an hour of paddling in that swell. The cheering from Lucille and Currier as I ran up was definitely a motivator. bucket in front of him and said ‘put your foot up here so I can take your ankle timer off for you, so you don’t have to bend down.’ I felt taken care of by this gentle giant, another embodiment of the Aloha Spirit. After getting a cup of fresh fruit they offered to us at the finish, I took my place alongside Currier and Lucille and cheered the others on as they came in. What was super cool was that our oldest and least experienced paddler ended up winning a medal in her division! We celebrated our stoke and accomplishment that evening as we dined at Lei Lei's Restaurant, then watching the fireworks from the green on the Turtle Bay Golf Course. Completely satisfied with ourselves, and proud of each other for overcoming the unique challenges that each of us faced. The Da Hui race opened up new possibilities for us. As Sorenson explained, “It was something I wouldn't have tried before, and I loved it! I want to do it again next year.” Once the race was complete, we turned our attention to SUP surfing at Waikiki. Rynkowski and I were most excited about this part of camp since we’re both SUP surf enthusiasts. We are not your typical surfers. We’re women in our forties learning this new lifestyle, and it has been empowering, challenging and fun. I find the surf culture very intimidating with the line-up etiquette and stories of grumpy, confrontational locals. According to a lot of people, we shouldn’t even bother learning this new sport so ‘late’ in life. For me, it felt invigorating and energizing, and I love the wipeouts, scrapes, bumps and bruises. The benefits are worth setting my fears aside. Camp Samata brought in two local paddle watermen legends, Leleo Kinimaka and Edmund Pestana, to give us lessons and help us out with tips on everything from equipment, to etiquette, to catching waves. They were fun, full of Aloha and even admitted to having a good time hanging out with us newbies. There is a reason that Waikiki is the birthplace of surf. It has the most beautiful and friendly breaks, the perfect place for learning and improving skills. We did have a little offshore wind to contend with, but that didn’t stop us from paddling hard, catching waves and cheering each other on! We spent the last few days of camp focusing on our SUP surf skills and visiting a few of the iconic Waikiki establishments including Duke’s Restaurant. It was cool to learn more about the history of Waikiki and surfing. Even though it is very touristy, I loved the vibe of Waikiki. Once you paddle out past the break you forget about the thousands of people crowding the beaches, and you’re out there, just you, your surfing Ohana and the water. As Guntherberg, a participant from Virginia remembered, “I had a blast surfing! I remember that Michelle was paddling out and I was surfing right by her, and we were both laughing. I love surfing because it forces you to be present.” I love being out there waiting for sets to come in because it allows the space and time for reflection. It inspires me to be in the present moment. The focus it takes to paddle into a wave also brings me into present-moment awareness.
84 Samata I V3N4
Everything else falls away and what counts is my connection to my board and my board’s connection to the water. Just like all that matters in life is our connection to our true selves and our connection to each other. Guntherberg describes this well: “As I grew closer to each of the amazing women that participated, I began to sense and feel specific attributes that I shared with each one of them. This connection provided the comfort that allowed me to be confident in who I am, why I was there, and where I am on my journey. It also provided courage for me to return home knowing that other women share my crazy dreams and aspirations.”

Trish from the Northeast expressed something similar: “The Camp Samata girls indeed became lifelong friends. The camp affirmed my lifelong love for the water, travel, and a sport that I wasn’t able to explain.” On the last evening of camp, we gathered at Ala Moana Beach for our closing Pule. The gifts from the Earth that each of us had brought with us from our homes were offered to the sea in gratitude. Circled, sitting quietly on our boards in the water as Eric said the closing prayer, we gave thanks to the water and the land for blessing us with Aloha. Although it was the end of the inaugural Camp Samata, we knew that the joy, the courage, the confidence, the inspiration that we had created together would carry on in our hearts.
None of this would have been possible without the courage and trust each woman displayed in showing up regardless of age, skill level, body type, fear or doubt. There is no right or wrong way to paddle or to live. There are only effective and ineffective ways to paddle and live. Living by someone else’s rules or our perceptions of how things should be — whether that is how much money you should earn, how your body should look or what kind of job you should have is unproductive and disempowering. Creating a space for women to show up just the way they are feeling honored and supported in accomplishing their unique goals is the real magic of Camp Samata. Aloha and mahalo!
