On the leeward side of Ambergris Caye is a mecca for those interested in fishing. Any kind of fishing – spin, fly, trolling, can be experienced all year long. While many travel to Belize to enjoy the sport of fishing, Belize’s Fishery Laws are actively helping to protect its environment for generations to come. Belize is making strides in mariculture options knowing they can never replace natural stocks which still need more protection now and forever.

SOUND BRAIN NUTRITION::
SHARPEN YOUR FOCUS How do we feed, and protect the gray matter from decay and disease you ask? Much of it, you’re probably already doing to a degree with an active, healthy lifestyle. The connection between gut health, brain function and longevity is getting out there – people are learning about supporting good gut health to get rid of brain fog, improve focus and concentration which plays a part in the performance in all areas. Bottom line – it still comes down to lowering inflammation in the body with better food/fuel choices, less stress, more fun, better sleep, and connection to nature as much as possible. Certain foods support better gut balance, and in turn, better brain function that helps keep inflammation at bay – these are my top choices.
HEALTHY FATS Our brains love healthy dietary fats; in fact, our whole nervous system needs them to thrive. When we are young, it’s especially important, but it’s never too late to get on the more “healthy fat” train! Training our system away from sugar (glucose) dependency might just be the wisest action we can take for brain health and overall longevity/performance. Coconut/Coconut Oil: Anti-microbial, anti-inflammation, medium chain fatty acids (energy). Making coconut oil best for cooking, smoothies, and high flash point. Walnuts/Macadamia Nuts: These nuts have the highest ratio of Omega 3’s. Pro Tip: best if soaked in spring water overnight to break down enzyme inhibitors that cause inflammation.
24 /SPMagazine / VOL 9Nº1 2O17
Olives/Olive Oil: Rich in polyphenols, which protect from brain related, related aging and toxic protein residues/oxidation. Best if not cooked with or heated too high, drizzle on salads, veggie dishes. Grass-fed butter: Rich in vitamin A, K, and E, also in butyrate, an anti-inflammation fat that supports gut and cardiovascular health, rich in CLA Omega 3’s. Pro Tip: Grass-fed Ghee has all the nutrition butter has but even more of it without the milk solids casein and lactose for anyone sensitive to dairy this is your best option. Wild Salmon, sardines, trout, mackerel: Wild oily fish rich in Omega 3’s, amino acids for focus and memory.
Egg Yolks: Rich in brain-boosting choline that also supports a balanced gut environment make these gems a simple choice. An inexpensive complete protein option with healthy fatty acids – source local pastured birds that forage in open spaces vs. GMO fed birds in cages. Turmeric: An actual longevity agent, anti-inflammation hero and antioxidant superstar this spice packs a punch. First class cell protection from the active curcumin compound helps the brain increase oxygen levels while boosting immunity too. Turmeric absorbs well with all of the above fats.
CERTAIN FOODS SUPPORT BETTER GUT BALANCE, AND IN TURN, BETTER BRAIN FUNCTION...
Bone Broth: Possibly the number #1 gut enhancing and brain protecting simple, easy access food. From helping to repair a leaky gut condition to raising immune levels to support healthy joints, this old world tonic delivers with consistency. High collagen proteins are anti-inflammatory and calm the gut environment. Always source clean animal bones you can trust when making your own or look for local butchers that source clean and make small batches. Dark Leafy Greens & Broccoli: Rich in vitamins A, C, K, minerals like iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium, and brain mineral choline. Fiber and chlorophyll rich dark green pigments give both gut and brain nutrient density that slows aging and keeps you sharp, with good recall. Grow some greens or source local organic.
Brain Octane Oil: Lesser known derived from 100% coconut oil is caprylic oil that makes up only about 2% of regular coconut oil. This distilled liquid added to buttered coffee/tea blends (a.k.a. Bulletproof style) and smoothies, recipes of all sorts to deliver quick energy from ketones rather than glucose and has a potent anti-microbial action that boosts gut and immune health. The steady brain fuel with this healthy fat source is an easy solution for anyone focused on peak performance. www.bulletproof.com Berries: High levels of anti-oxidant protection and ability to remove old plaque from the brain while boosting serotonin levels of “feel good” make berries of all kinds a natural choice for good brain health. Always source organic or wild.
Avocado: Rich in mono-saturated oils that help balance blood sugars and support sound fat metabolism these rich, creamy easy to pack and eat on the run gems are always an excellent choice for performance fuel. Avo’s are easy to combine with bananas for quick energy and fiber. They are high in B and C vitamins, more protein than any fruit and the least amount of sugar make it the perfect food. Cacao (chocolate): Loaded with nutrients, this ancient food of the gods, in its raw form offers cell protection and better blood flow to the brain than most foods. Fat-soluble iron, chromium, and some of the highest magnesium levels of any food make pure cacao a stash of next level nutrition for the brain. There is a reason this food became the currency of an ancient people in South America for centuries.
The common denominator of all these foods is they lack sugars supporting gut health, which in turn helps brain health. Healthy fat intake from various sources is the fuel of choice and feeds focus, concentration, and performance for life. Choose wisely, friends! Paddle with a smile.

HO W TO TRAINING with Thomas “Maximus” Shahinian
SWITCH TECHNIQUE:: Mastering an Efficient Paddle Stroke
The majority of paddle stroke technique discussions focus on maximizing your performance while either entering, pulling or exiting the paddle blade through the water. In this article, we’ll discuss the technique of switching from paddling on one side of your board to the other quickly and efficiently. Mastering this skill is an important method to learn since your board will continue to de-accelerate while your paddle is out of the water.
1
2
One of the most important steps to perfecting your switching technique is to avoid exiting too far back to the point of scooping water and becoming hung up at the back of your stroke.
3
Once you’ve completed the pull/power phase of your stroke cleanly exiting the water by either slipping the blade off to the side, pulling it straight out or a hybrid of the two. You’ll begin the set-up to switch paddle sides.
4
While you start to move the blade forward through the recovery phase, you can either begin to slide your bottom hand up the shaft –simultaneously toss it across your board to the other side while grasping the shaft below with the opposite hand. Or you can allow the momentum of the shaft to slip through till the exiting bottom hand, reaches below the top handle and then grasping the shaft with the contrary.
The goal is to be able to switch sides maintaining the same amount of time your regular paddle stroke requires – allowing a full paddle stroke at the entry point you begin your catch phase. Hint: Be sure to keep a grasp of the paddle with one hand at all times to avoid accidentally dropping your paddle. Practice, practice, practice is essential.
NOTE: This is an abbreviated overview of the “Switch” technique and significantly expanded upon within individual and group paddle clinics with Thomas Maximus. Email Maximus@FirstTeamXtreme.com to schedule a clinic at a Race, Shop or Club near you.

BOARD CONNECTION:: Chair Pose
Stand-up paddleboarding is a full body workout. Whether we are recreational paddlers looking to maximize our time on the water or racers looking to elevate our results our lower body plays a significant role in helping us connect to our board.
1
2
Start in a comfortable standing position. Allow the hands to rest on either side of the hips. Palms face forward. Shoulders slide down the back away from the ears. Ground-down through all four corners of each foot, extend up through the crown of the head – providing length to your spine.
3
Begin to bend your knees, maintaining the elongation in the spine. Gaze down over the knees to make sure the toes are in sight. Do not worry about how low the pose goes, but focus on the connection the feet are making with the ground. Spiral the thighs inward as if to squeeze an object between them.
4
Continue to keep the straight line in the back. Notice from the crown of the head to the tailbone the similarity of a paddle position. On the inhale, sweep the hands overhead. If the shoulders are tight, allow the hands to go wider than the shoulders. Roll the palms in to face each other. This is chair pose.
Stay in this pose for three to five breaths or up to a minute. The longer you hold this pose, in this position, the stronger, the lower body becomes including the feet. Chair pose is a good pose to do on your board.
If this pose is comfortable, a variation can be added helping to build strength in the feet. From chair pose, ground-down through the balls of the feet. Slowly lifting the heels off the ground; if the balance begins to slip, start with one foot at a time. Keep in mind not to sacrifice the alignment in the back to accomplish this pose. Taking some of the bend out of the knees allows you more depth to be added.

5-MINUTE EPOXYING YOUR PADDLE TOPS :: We found the most efficient way to put a paddle together using 5-Minute epoxy resin. Because of its quick drying quality, it’s a good go-to source for many water-related solutions, this one being paddle glue ups. How easy? We had our copy editor do the simple step-by-step tip in 5 minutes.
1
Measure your paddle shaft to your desired height. Remember that you need to add the height of your (PADDLE) TOP to get the finished height. Have your 5-Minute Epoxy ready, along with a stick for mixing and applying, thin plastic gloves and 180 grit wet sandpaper.
4
Apply the 2-part epoxy onto the clear container, or you can use a hard disposable surface to prep the epoxy. Mix the application until it turns into a semi-clear jell coat –this usually takes about 30 seconds.
7
2
Once you find your height, tape off where you want it cut and use an aluminum hacksaw. Just before you finish your cut, especially with thin carbon fiber Chinese made paddle shafts, by leaving a quarter inch left to cut, turn the paddle blade over and hacksaw the last part of the shaft. This step will enable you a clean cut and no tear in your carbon-fiber cloth, which makes up the shaft.
5
Apply a fair amount of the epoxy onto the open face of the PADDLE TOP, which slides into the shaft. Make sure the coat is thin and applied to a third or half the top.
8
3
Sand your top that inserts into the shaft to get better traction before you epoxy the PADDLE TOP. 80 grit sandpaper is best, but you can use the 180 grit wet sandpaper –less water.
6
Now you are ready to slide the PADDLE TOP into the shaft and spin the PADDLE TOP, so the shaft is coated with epoxy, so it will not take in water when paddling.
9
Make sure your PADDLE TOP and the face (front) of your BLADE lines up clean and straight before curing otherwise you’ll have an off-line paddle stroke while paddling.
Wipe all excess epoxy resin off the tape and PADDLE TOP.
Upon aligning your PADDLE TOP and BLADE face, run a strip of tape around it, so it holds a straight position until it the epoxy cures.
10
11
12
Upon drying and curing, you are now ready to peel the tape and depending on how much epoxy resin you leave, you can either have a smooth bead finish, or you can sand it with the 180 grit wet sandpaper. Apply water to the sandpaper, and you are ready for the last step.
Hold your wet-sand paper in one hand, spin the shaft of your paddle with your other hand until you have a smooth PADDLE TOP surface and keep applying water to both the shaft and the sandpaper until you are satisfied with the process. DO NOT OVER-SAND THE EPOXY RESIN, AS YOU WANT A SOLID BOND INSIDE AND OUT.
You now have a smooth finish, and because the epoxy bonds quickly, depending on the humidity, you can usually get in the water within an hour. Now go paddle!

31-miles down the Chattanooga River for the 6th Annual Chattajack will commence on October 28, 2017; at 8:30 A.M. 27,000 acres of forestland generating clean air. 24-endangered and six threatened species. How many forest types does the Chattajack course travel through? After a conversation with Rick at the Tennessee River Gorge Trust, we discovered there are 13! If you are wondering why this race is one of the latest scheduled we asked that question for you. Here’s the answer we got. “We get asked this question all the time, and there’s a bunch of reasons that we think you’ll agree with!” Fall Air Temps: The air temperatures in the Tennessee River Gorge during the fall are typically ideal. It may be a little chill certain days, but it definitely won’t be blazing hot. Summertime temperatures in the gorge will hover in the high 90’s for weeks/months. Add in the humidity and the heat index is often well over 100 degrees. Not ideal for a distance race. Fall Foliage: Fall colors in the mountains of Tennessee are amazing! The color change peak has a lot of factors that influence the vividness as well as when the peak will occur. Chattajack race weekend you will find perfectly positioned so that there will be color on the walls of the gorge. Adventure: There is always a chance that a cold snap will come through the Appalachian Mountains on race weekend as it did for Chattajack in 2013. If it does, be ready! Water temps: If the air temps are on the cooler side at least the water will still be warm! Water temps during Chattajack race weekend are typically in the mid 70’s. Additional Fun: While you’re in town racing Chattajack grab a bike and cruise the river walk. You can also drive up to one of the overlooks (Signal Point, Point Park, Snoopers Rock, Raccoon Mountain), take a ride on the River Gorge Explorer, explore downtown Chattanooga on foot or bike, go for a nice warm up paddle, the list is endless. There are so many fun thing do to during this time of year when the Chattajack Race happens you better plan to stay an extra day on the front end or back end of your trip.

Belize, a country roughly 9,000 square miles, once known as British Honduras, is geographically located on the east side of Central America with Mexico above it and wrapped to the west and south by the country of Guatemala. With a small population of less than 370,000 people, this English speaking country is flavored with accents of the many decades of Spanish descendants, yet holds historical roots in Mayan indigenous past. Although the country’s name has changed through battles, Spanish conquistadors and explorers, the coastline still boasts kilometers of pristine coral reefs and sea life. Do you want to live the dream of getting on a flight with just you and your buddies experiencing the life of an outdoorsman on Caribbean waters? A place where fly-fishing takes priority to your day along with few cold brews to sip during the eves, then Belize welcomes you to an adventure at a base camp with the BOTE crew.
Wil Beaucher, Producer
So who are these outdoorsmen that are so eager to take up the offer of escaping everyday life to explore waters and a possible meal ticket with their daily catch? When offered the chance-in-a-life time to do just that, there was no denying the opportunity to hop on a plane with only a few bags, some cash, a plastic card and a passport. With the opening to SUP fish along a local team of Belize fishing aces, this was far better than being invited to cast off with the likes of a Captain “Wild” Bill Wichrowski on “Deadliest Catch.”

Taking small planes to small islands, the BOTE crew has gear in tow ready for an epic couple of days at Cayo Frances.Â
Thirty-six miles off the coast of Belize City, Belize, the six outdoorsmen land. After commuting from northwest Florida, U.S.A., the Destin crew arrive – Wil Beaucher, Shane Reynolds, Corey Cooper, Rob McAbee, and Sean Murphy.
The depth of the Caribe waters is what prompted discoverer Christopher Columbus to name this place Honduras, which literally means “depths.”

Corey Cooper catches a quick drink with the locals before heading to Jeff’s camp for a couple of days of fly fishing.
After a commuter flight from Belize Airport to the final destination in San Pedro, there’s nothing like taking a time-out to the local bar for a cold one, and you start to chill, as someone here like Corey Cooper knows. By the second or third brew – taking in the colors, the culture, beautiful people in the bar, you start understanding its history and how it all came to be. When you sauce up the local wrapped dish, (below pic), you realize you’re not in Kansas anymore. The sounds and the vibe start to intoxicate you to another level of decompression – life on easy street. You become the next level outdoorsman in a dream-like state, caught up in the drum solo portion on Iron Butterfly’s “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” baby.

Pottery, plants, and people: Jeff Spiegel gives a tour of his fish camp and all the history of the land.
Tilling the earth, living off the land, planting, growing while teaching others to slow down, and enjoy life, defines what Cayo Frances Farm and Fly is all about. That along with a few fine pieces of pottery, fresh fruits, and greens from the local market makes for organic living here. Spiegel not only shares it – he lives it. Now, having lived there for 14 years, it was time to open his fly fishing camp exposing people to all the island has to offer. “Belize is incredibly unique—it’s a tiny country with a ton of diversity. In a place like Ambergris Caye, the windward side has the beaches, the reef, and is now a bustling tourist town. The leeward side, on the other hand, has nothing. Concentrated entirely on flats fishing—bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook, so I decided to make it the type of place that people who are visiting from San Pedro can get away from town and fish with some of the best guides we have,” says Jeff. Spiegel has been building Cayo Frances Farm and Fly now for a year and a half. The farm grows with the native Chaya plant situated on land that 1,300 years ago, more people lived on than do presently, making it rich in history. “This is pretty much the last developed property until you hit Mexico. My camp is truly one of the unique spots in the country,” he explains. “Not to mention the incredible food cooked for you throughout your stay!”

Like any shantytown, the locals have a way of showing more personality, being happy to entertain even the most intense fisherman. It’s inevitable – sooner or later you crack open a bottle of the local brew and enter into a warm comfort zone.

Kevin Barker is a force to be reckoned with here in Cayo Frances. Top notched and a class-act as well.
A step away from the campsite is some of the clearest water you will ever see, filled with endless fly-fishing possibilities. Depending on how skinny you want to get or how far you want to travel, Cayo Frances Farms and Fly has the camp equipped with multiple BOTE boards and skiffs to take out. “Nothing is going to give you more freedom and better access to the waters than paddle boards,” says Spiegel. The BOTE team found it efficient for long distance trips, to trail a board behind the skiff, getting you out farther, but enabling you to explore skinnier and more concealed waters. With the help of expert outdoorsmen fishing guides, our team visited some of the best fishing spots Belize had to offer and did not ever leave empty handed. The fishery here is world class but it is not easy—there are probably few places as rewarding to fish,” he adds.

“After spending a week with Jeff, our team was sold on living the small island life and cannot wait to visit Belize again. Corey Cooper, BOTE owner and CEO, upon embarking back to reality, tearfully stated, “Although the town of San Pedro is an amazing spot to see, filled with authentic foods, locals, and buildings, nothing compares to the camp, team, and fishing that Jeff has going on at Cayo Francis.”

As the small aircraft lifted up into the blue skies, each and every one of them could say to themselves,
“Good brews, boards, bonefish, and Belize.” ACCOMMODATIONS The camp has two simple, comfortable cabanas each with two twin beds (you can push them together if that’s your thing) a dresser, desk, and deck with Adirondack chairs. There is another building with two shared modern full bathrooms with hot and cold water. You’ll find in the main house an inside breakfast area and screened in porch for lounging. Cayo Frances also boasts an outdoor kitchen, BBQ, deck, dining palapa, dock and a fire pit by the water’s edge for nightly bonfires. They also have lots of great books, hammocks and a couple of good fer nuthin’ lazy dogs. The camp is on solar power with diesel backup. They make their own water with an R/O system, so they ask that you conserve as best you can (no Hollywood showers please.) Yes, there is internet access at the camp, though if you are on your phone all day long, they might just accidentally knock it in the water.
GUIDES & GEAR They know that when it comes to fly fishing, nothing will ever replace the experience of a guided day of fishing with a local guide who knows the water and fishery like the back of their hand. Cayo Frances Farm is more than happy to set you up with one of the best guides on the island. From their own fishing experiences here and from a decade of running a resort, they have excellent relationships with Belize Fly/ Tres Pescados Fly Shop, El Pescador Lodge, Laminar Fly, Go Fish Belize and Reel Woman Fly Fishing to name a few. At the same time, they realize lots of folks enjoy a DIY fishing experience and/or might not have the means to hire a guide every day. Thus, they have a fleet of SUP’s and kayaks, all set up for sight fishing for folks who want to give it a go on their own. They also know that most folks travel with their own gear. That said, they realize that s#@! happens, so they have camp gear that they are more than happy to lend: Scott
and Sage fly rods, Hatch and Nautilus reels and Shimano and Daiwa spinning outfits. Spiegel is incredibly excited to offer a hugeselection of flies from their friends at Steelie Bros Fly Co. For paddling, the camp has a fleet of a half dozen of the newest boards from the AMAZING folks at BOTE Board, including three Rackham “Bugslinger” models with tackle racs and bucket racs, in addition to the SUP boards there are available a solo and a tandem NuCanoe fishing kayak. WHAT TO BRING In short, bring as little as possible. You are not going to need a lot. General vacation stuff – lightweight, breathable shorts and shirts. At least one or two lightweight long sleeve shirts for longer days in the boat/sun. Good polarized glasses. Flip flops. Wading booties or boots. A hat. An extra hat. A sun buff. Sunscreen. Lip balm with sunscreen. Lightweight, breathable rain gear. Bug spray. Camera

Fiona Wylde likes to travel, whether it’s up and down the West Coast of the U.S.A. or a trip to Maui tackling the winds, water – with or without four wheels, she’s an adventurer always looking for some kind of wild ride. We spotted Fiona in the parking lot at Cardiff By The Sea, one cool California, calm morning; the surf was fun, a little crowded. She sat in her wheels with a full load of equipment. Boasting a quiver full of Starboard’s latest boards spanning an assortment from surf to race – how she was able to fit them in her vehicle is beyond us. But she had it all with room for the spare, including her Minnie Mouse headband. Inquiring minds want to know so we asked – What’s in your van? “So what’s in my van?” Fiona laughs, “Everything! From boards to chocolate, to my closet and cook stove, the van carries it all!”

“So what’s in my van? Everything from boards to chocolates to my closet and cookstove. The van carries it all.” Vans don’t grow on trees, so we asked how this one came to be. “This van belonged to my family till I inherited it. It holds a lot of sentimental value since it was my ‘growing up vehicle.’ My dad bought the van when I had just turn four years old, and I’m turning 20 this year. The adventures I’ve had in this van with my family growing up are some of my best memories, and now with my boyfriend, Bernd (Rodinger), I’m creating new ones. Is there a game plan for some of Fiona’s wild adventures? “Last summer, Bernd and I outfitted the van for a road trip with no real destination. We left Hood River, Oregon and headed south. From there, it didn’t matter where we ended up. We just drove! If we heard there were going to be good waves in Northern

California, we went surfing. If we wanted to go hiking in the national forest, we packed up and went to the Sequoia National Forest. We got the itch to go windsurfing and eat Al Pastor Tacos in Baja, so we drove down to Baja. It was the most incredible summer living out of the van, going with the flow, and living in the moment. This van has driven up and down Baja, been to Idaho, Nevada, all around California, Oregon, and Washington. We’ve done a pretty good job of covering the Western States, so now it’s time to venture inland exploring lakes and river and head up into Canada.” How many boards can her van hold? “Lots!” Fiona tells us before giving the tally, “It’s easy to keep four race boards; a couple windsurf boards and stand-up surfboards without a worry.”

BRITTANY PARKER FOR HEALTHY SKOOP With enthusiasm for van life, she readily expands on the topic of living on the road, challenges and the happiness it brings. “Sure there are things that make living in a van difficult. Things you take for granted in house – like how to do laundry to keeping the ice cold, so food doesn’t spoil. Oh, and where to take showers! Aside from that, living in a van is pretty darn awesome! My real happiness came from having only the things that mattered – food, boards and most importantly, my best friend! We went anywhere and everywhere we wanted to. The adventures we shared together are memories I will never forget!”
