:: OUTSIDE OF KANAHA BAY :: The offshore trade winds facing Maui’s northside, offer up some of the best ocean playground activities on a day to day basis. Due to the funnel effect from the West Maui mountain range and Mount Haleakala, which funnels the air south— windsurfers, kiteboarders, and paddleboarders have a haven for water disciplines. Add to the mix the art of board foiling—the horizon is rapidly creating new hype and buzz. Rising above all— the plain fact is, it’s mostly fun and an innovative way to ride the ocean’s energy. PUBLISHER’S NOTE
RIDING IN HARMONY Right out of the book of “Harmony On The Water” you can find a place where everyone shares the waves, the vibes are positive and the waters warm, 72-degree trade winds blow through and smiles become one. It was the way surfing started back in Chapter One—when a handful of riders would share their waves and stories of glides, of cutbacks, of sliding all the way through to the beach and of all their special moments flowing with nature’s liquid path. Somewhere, however, between the middle chapters of the thousands of ridden waves, things changed, and the spirit, the soul of man and trust of one another have fallen to the wayside. But one day, as it was in the book, we can hope for the simplicity of smiles, peace and all ride in harmony. Let’s share the stoke.

THE JADE JEWEL OF JAPAN Tea lovers and health seekers have long enjoyed the benefits of green tea which have made its way into the mainstream supply chain and can be found just about anywhere these days. In the last decade, an Imperial version of the plant has made its way west out of Japan, into health stores, progressive coffee shops, juice/smoothie bars and online retailers. Matcha is on the scene and here to stay!
Matcha is made from the delicate leaves of the finest green tea on the planet coming out of the Kyoto region in Japan since the 11th century. Japan only exports 4% of its Matcha to the rest of the world; this is a highly revered resource and tradition timehonored for its health giving properties. The freshly picked leaves are dried and ground into a fine powder. The best cultivator’s use old world methods using granite stones so no heat is brought into the process that could damage the delicate elements of the leaves like other Matcha operations tend to do outside of Japan using forced heat to speed up the process. Tip: always source companies that value the traditional process of slower processing for the best quality Matcha.
and salmonella to attack. Your gut bacteria metabolize polyphenols so you can use them better, especially in the brain! New neuron growth and lower inflammation are seen with increased consistent intake of these powerful polyphenols. This gut-brain pathway is the key to ending brain fog, and increasing performance on all levels.
STACKING THE ODDS IN OUR FAVOR When it comes to protecting our cells, Matcha is in a class of its own or at least very few, this nutrient dense gem packs a punch. One cup Matcha is equal to 10 cups of regular brewed green tea in terms of antioxidant power! A specific family of antioxidants called, Catechins, are some of the most medicinal and potent compounds that have been discovered in plants. One Catechin, EGCg, makes up 60% of the Catechins in Matcha Green Tea. EGCg is a cancer fighter, and scientists have found that Matcha Green Tea contains over 100 times more EGCg than any other tea on the market.
Follow the ‘way of tea’ when preparing traditional Matcha making a paste with a bamboo whisk and a small amount of 175-degree water then adding to recipes, smoothies, lattes, desserts, and a wide variety of dishes or just the perfect simple tea. Wisetip: Add Matcha to healthy fats for best assimilation.
Enhance calm states like Chinese Daoist and Zen Buddhists Monks with “alert calm” to access higher states of consciousness or flow. I like to call this “relaxed intensity” more fully at the moment. The amino acid L-Theanine contained in the leaves used to make Matcha promotes the production of alpha waves in the brain which induces relaxation without the dip in energy. This is smart stress management. Energy, endurance and stamina are present with the “clean” caffeine in the tea. The unique combo of polyphenols, brain enhancing amino acids, catechins with about 40mg caffeine per serving allow our brains to be more focused, creative, protected and active no matter what we are doing, especially padding in nature connected to the water where all our senses are engaged. Polyphenols are the longevity hack you want to stay consistent with. These guys protect your gut bacteria and support your gut environment to a level that makes it hard for pathogens like staphylococcus
26 /SPMagazine / VOL 9Nº2 2O17
When sourcing Matcha Green Tea always choose the most vibrant green color powder that has been produced using traditional methods to preserve the complex, life-giving elements. Companies like www. domatcha.com are one of a small number of operations from the Kyoto region that have stayed true to their Matcha roots!
COCONUT MATCHA LATTE 1 serving Matcha ½ cans organic coconut milk or young fresh coconut meat/water ½ tsp of vanilla extract or vanilla bean powder 1 tbsp coconut sugar or stevia (optional) 1 cup hot water Blend on high 30 seconds and enjoy! Try some cold Matcha tea in your hydration pack during a long paddle sesh with honey and sea salt for a balance of electrolytes, glucose, amino acids, caffeine, and potent anti-inflammatory compounds— tell us how you feel! HO W TO TRAINING with Thomas “Maximus” Shahinian
MONITORING & EVALUATING PADDLE TECHNIQUE:: In the pursuit to perfect your paddling technique and performance, you’ll need a system or device to measure your progress and provide you with calculable, instantaneous or downloadable feedback to evaluate your performance. There are numerous choices available to paddlers depending on their budget and desire for more data. In this article, we’ll discuss a few options available for the budget conscience weekend paddler to the elite paddler.
1
2
One of simplest and least expensive methods that only requires a wristwatch to track, record, and evaluate progress, is by establishing a fixed time trial course (i.e., 500M, 1000M, 2000M) to complete weekly or bimonthly. Record your time and heart rate upon completion within a logbook or the calendar on your smartphone. *Note: The accuracy of this method can be significantly skewed by wind and tides, which should be noted within your logbook.
3
Another relatively inexpensive option that provides real-time data and doesn’t require calculations to record average speed is a GPS with built-in heart rate monitor. This device can be attached to your board while displaying real-time data with speed, distance, heart rate, pace, et cetera. The data can also be downloaded to your computer for later review and recording.
4
There are also more elaborate devices for paddlers who desire additional data and willing to invest the money for those features. These devices include all the features of the GPS w/ HR mentioned above plus larger displays, stroke rate, distance per stroke, etc. Incorporating video allows the paddler to evaluate their form in addition to the numerical data along with recording weather conditions.
Create your training logbook by downloading your data after a few workouts, print, bind, and add dates, notes, maps and pictures to record and evaluate your progress.
Note: This is an abbreviated overview of the “Devices & Techniques” to monitoring and evaluating your progress and significantly expanded upon within individual and group paddle clinics with Thomas Maximus. Email Maximus@FirstTeamXtreme.com to schedule a clinic at a race, shop or club near you!

TREE POSE
Stand-up paddleboarding allows us to head out on the water. Where we become connected to the moving surface, we float on. But as it moves below us, the connection can be lost—resulting in a feeling of instability and ultimately sending us crashing into the water. A balancing pose, like tree pose. Helps us train our bodies and mind to connect with the surface where we stand. The following sequence is for anyone and can be done anywhere—from land to the water, the office or at home.
1
2
On the next inhalation begin to shift the weight to the left leg. Ground down through all five toes, the ball of your foot and heel, equally. Put a generous bend in the left knee, a bit more than in Mountain Pose. Open the right toes, foot, knee and hip to the right. Connect the heel of the right foot to the left ankle. Keep the right toes on the earth. Your breath will stay the same. The gaze will go down or straight ahead—fixed on something stationary.
3
On the next inhalation begin to shift the weight to the left leg. Ground down through all five toes, the ball of your foot and heel, equally. Put a generous bend in the left knee, a bit more than in Mountain Pose. Open the right toes, foot, knee and hip to the right. Connect the heel of the right foot to the left ankle. Keep the right toes on the earth. Your breath will stay the same. The gaze will go down or straight ahead—fixed on something stationary. Maintain the length in the spine.
4
If your connection to the ground with the left foot feels strong and the balance is working—the next step is to work the right foot up the calf. Your movements will follow the breath. Be slow and deliberate. The left leg can stay slightly bent but will begin to engage. The right sole can connect with the left calf or further up on the left inner thigh. This connection will be secure as if both the right foot and left leg are pushing into each other. Engage the core to help increase the strength and balance, as well as the length and extension through your spine. Keep your gaze in the same spot. If balance and breath are steady—slowly raise your hands up overhead but keeping shoulders, down and away from the ears. This is Tree Pose.

SOLAREZ QUICK REPAIR :: Accidents happen—dings come in all shapes and sizes. Solarez provides you with this simple and easy way to get back out on the water for fun and adventure should you damage your board. Always keep a Solarez Ding Repair Kit around your garage because no one can predict unfortunate mishaps to your board.
1
In this HOW TO tip we will show you how to repair a board in under an hour should something fall on and damage your board. Always remember—that if the damage happened while out on the water let it air and completely dry out. THE KIT COMES WITH: • ZEROVOC styrofoam-safe UV-Cure fiberfil putty • WAHOO 2-Part Epoxy Resin • Solarez FLEX wetsuit and deck pad repair • Fiberglass cloth and rope • Stainless steel scissors • Applicators • Sandpaper • Eco-friendly clean up solvent • Masking tape and razor blade
3
Tape the area around the sanded portion where you are applying the resin, and it is cleaned and ready for step number four.
6
Flatten the resin before it dries. If you are in the sun, the UV cure will set off immediately. Find a shaded area for easier and cleaner results. It’ll make your sanding time quick. Once you get your resin to sit on you deck puncture, you can let it sit in the sun.
4
Because this board has punctured fiberglass, and this is a quick fix, and you can get in the water within an hour—a small strip of fiberglass rope is used to bond the split opened puncture.
7
Within 15 minutes depending on your location (this is a Hawaii region repair) you can sand the very brittle excess resin. The kit comes with sand paper however, a disc sander was on hand along with 120 grit and 220 wet sand paper to speed the process for the impatient paddler.
2
Sand the area where you are applying Solarez to see the damage. Remember this is a quick solution and not a cosmetic answer to your repair, so time is of the essence. Make sure your board is made with epoxy foam.
5
Next, take the big blue tube of Solarez and apply the resin to the puncture and assure the fiber glass rope is applied and pressed into the designated area.
8
As we said, this is not a cosmetic ding repair but a Solarez Ding Repair fix which allowed for us to get in the water within an hour. Board sealed and the to paddle thanks to Solarez.com.

Last summer, the world of water woke up to something old, which became something new. PHOTOS BY FRANKIE BEES Waterman Kai Lenny, with a paddle in hand, elevated riding on water by mounting a hydrofoil attached to his paddleboard, similar to those that ridden on tow board mounts. Mastering a number of water disciplines, not only did he advance himself with relationship to a new water toy, but also created a new hype and buzz that caught many watermen off guard. Newer design to the foil craft in wing shape and shaft height and everyone core who took notice, want to be like Lenny. They all wanted to get—LIFTED. In between break from traveling the world competing in a variation of disciplines, we had the opportunity to sit this waterman down and ask him a few questions about foiling and as someone raising the bar on becoming the ultimate waterman. Says Lenny on the early buzz, “What prompted me to explore other avenues of Hydrofoiling goes back to as far as when I was nine years old, and I got my first hydrofoil from Rush Randle. Those were the early days, and the technology was just catching up to the possibilities of the concept. My first time riding Jaws was actually on a hydrofoil with Dave Kalama and Laird Hamilton. So as years went by I started to compete more and with downwind stand-up paddling I always felt that the potential to ride down with the bumps was more than possible, but nobody had done foiling with downwind, so it was a bit of an unknown. I only sought to enhance my experience downwind, and the first time I got up and went 100 yards, it was literally like stepping off a bicycle onto a motorcycle. The speed and the possibilities blew my mind! I initially started working with Alex Aguera in the beginning before we both went our separate ways. There was a lot of R&D, but it just came down to micro adjustments and seeing how small of a board you could get away with because once your flying you don’t need anything but a place to stand. Since the very beginning, R&D has yet to stop, and I don’t think it ever will. Compared to what I started using downwind with what I’m using now is the equivalent

“YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE SURFING OR STANDUP PADDLING. I HAVE TAKEN SOME BEST SURFERS IN THE WORLD TO TRY IT AND THEY TELL ME ITS LIKE LEARNING ALL OVER AGAIN.” of the Wright Brothers first airplane/glider to a modern airplane/glider. It’s only getting better!”
am looking forward to coming out with one in production—I have plenty of friends requesting them.”
How long did it take to calculate how to make this work and did the guys from GO FOIL help you to figure it out and customize it? Or did they just say, “Here, try this out and let’s see what you can do?” “Initially I came to Alex about making a SUP surf foil like some of the guys was doing in France. I first used a Kitefoil, and it was way too unstable and with not enough lift. He then made a front wing that had a much better lift and was suitable for soft mushy waves. After all that I pushed to get into the downwind side of things going—I saw the potential for a never before done experience.”
How hard is it to learn for the common man? And how long did it take for you to get it dialed? “You’ve got to have some experience surfing or stand-up paddling. It will be better for you making that knowledge useful and an easier the transition to foiling. I have taken some of the best surfers in the world to try it, and they always tell me it’s like learning all over again. But they usually figure it out after a few waves. For most people starting behind a boat or jet-ski to learn the nuances of the foil is best. Or you can just catch small white waters, and that’ll lift you up gently. I think for most everyone, three solid days until you begin to get comfortable. Just like anything else—feeling like you mastered it will take a while, I’m still learning myself with every session I do.”
I saw a picture of you when you were nine wearing big boots and tiny tow ski, how hard or easy was that to do? “Compared to now it was much harder, you had to have a deeper focus, and I recall the bottom of my feet would get fatigued of being in the snowboard boots from all the upward pressure the foil was creating. On top of that, the whole set up was heavy and was like an aluminum samurai blade! Back then foiling was a hard thing to do, you needed a jet-ski or a boat and if you were learning it was a bucking bronco.” Tell us about the new FOILS that Naish is coming out with this year, the Malolo (dimensions, size, foil size, wings, placement)? Are there plans for a mounted surfboard foil from Naish? “On the production side of things what’s so impressive about the new Naish Malolo foil is that its range of conditions is enormous. Downwind, bigger waves, small waves, and best of all—its turning ability is incredible. What I also like about it is the fact I can break it down and put it into my suitcase. Already Naish has available a downwind hydrofoil board that’s 10’4” and a SUP surf foil board, a 7’8” Raptor. As far as short board surfing foil board, I
Is there somewhat of an addiction to foiling or just something to pass the time? It seems like you’ve been doing a lot of other things and you’re excelling at your surf and contest game—I have no doubt you’ll qualify for the CT on the WSL if you wanted to? “For sure the hydrofoil is addicting, it’s just like snowboarding in chest deep powder. To me, that is one of the best sensations you could ever feel. I have become a much stronger surfer because of foiling. I can ride the unrideable and get the same feeling of a 6-foot perfect wave. As far as the WSL qualifiers go, my primary goal is to qualify for the Triple Crown of Surfing on the North Shore of Oahu. I love competing. Foiling has helped elevate my surfing, which in turn has improved my abilities in all the sports that do.” Surf foil or downwind foil, which do you prefer? “They both are so different and so much fun that I can’t choose. The ultimate equalizer for surf trips is having the surf foil because it eliminates the possibility of getting skunked.
“I SUGGEST STARTING OFF BEING TOWED NUANCES OF THE FOIL. THEN TRANSITION TURNS INTO A SWELL.” 40 /SPMagazine / VOL 9Nº2 2O17
Foiling downwind runs has changed me forever. It’s riding a motorcycle compared to a bicycle. I can’t imagine going downwind on anything else would be as much fun and equally fast!” What are the most waves you’ve connected after riding one and pumping back out to the next? “The most I have connected were four waves in a set. I feel that I could easily connect more—there just needs to be more and bigger sets of waves!” What was it like foiling down the Maui coast and finding lines and swell and just keep going? How far have you ever foiled? “When I first started I was happy to get up and go for 100 yards before dropping back down. Now, I’m staying up on foil from Maliko to Kahului Harbor without ever coming down. It’s changed my perspective hugely since I have to be ten steps ahead of what I would normally be when I’m on a traditional SUP. It’s about finding the line and hitting the bumps like moguls on a ski slope. It’s so technical and physical—but I don’t notice it since my adrenaline is up. I’m always having so much fun I forget it’s a workout!” On say a Maliko Run—does it freak people out on SUP board to see you on your surfboards foiling past them? “My favorite is seeing a group of people paddling downwind by Ho’okipa as I’m getting driven up to Maliko and mentally challenging myself wondering if I can catch them. The foil is so silent that I totally sneak up on people, get close if they’re my friends—it’s good fun!” What about the OC-1’s, have you passed them as well? “In the right conditions. I don’t think there is a single paddling craft that could beat the surfboard foil. I have been able to pass everything up to a 6-man outrigger sailing canoe. Honestly—in the middle of a big channel in big bumps I don’t think an escort boat could keep up.” We see guys like Dave Kalama, Laird, Terry Chung all getting into it these days. It seems like you just rejuvenated the guys you looked up to as a kid and now they are having a blast with the fun factor, how’s that make you feel and do they call you for advice? “I think it’s awesome, in the very beginning I was trying to get everyone to try since I knew they would love it. It’s cool to see them foiling as passionately as they were back in the day with the old foil set-ups with the boots.” Give us some tips for hydrofoiling—how to
learn. “I suggest starting off being towed behind a boat or jet-ski to learn the nuances of the foil. Then transition by getting into small white water that turns into a swell. Maintain your focus on getting the foil up and standing vertically over the board is important. The way you turn and maneuver is by moving your head and shoulders. At first and only in the beginning don’t try and turn using your feet like you would surfing.” Best kind of wave and water? “All conditions are awesome, but the best to learn would be knee high barely breaking swells.” What to avoid? “Avoid people; even though I know what I’m doing, I am never riding with other surfers unless they are my friends. The best part of the foil—you can avoid crowds. Foiling is intending for no crowds. So be good at it!” Safety tips? “At first, if it helps your confidence—a helmet, leash, and an impact vest could be useful. If the foil is going to jackknife up at you, remember when you’re falling to rotate your back and most of the time you will avoid hitting it. Know your limits—you won’t ever have trouble.” That all said, I know you’ve gotten serious about your surfing and competing on the WSL, do you plan to continue SUP racing and maybe perhaps getting involved with competing in foil competitions for distance and surf? “I’m stoked taking the time to participate in surfing competitions, but I won’t stop my racing or my surfing in SUP. I’ve never been this excited for summer to come around as I think the foil racing is going to blow people’s minds, and that’s what I am excited to do. Hopefully, a bunch of events will open up divisions this year for their downwind events.” Back to foil, your brother seems pretty stoked doing it in San Diego, what do you tell people when they see you out there riding swell energy and ask you, “What the heck are you doing?” “You take for granted what the foil can do, and it reminds you when people are blown away that don’t understand the mechanics and almost think of it as witchcraft. It’s hilarious, but so far the reception I have been getting from it are only positive. But that’s also because I avoid popular surf spots and find my own area to ride, similar to my brother and what he’s doing in San Diego.” Whether Kai Lenny is alone or with a friend on the water, the bottom line—it’s not in a condensed mass of crowded waters, and you’ll find him with his ever-present smile getting—Lifted.

You may have seen some of the best watermen on the Go Foil inundated throughout social media. If you happen to live in the Hawaiian islands—the waters of Maui and other islands have converted surfers and SUP riders into transforming their boards into wings on the water to create daily orders for the Go Foil brand—no longer confined but now riding the unbroken energy of swell movement seemingly endless. Longtime Maui foil enthusiast and builder, Alex Aguera has stoke to ride and build. He came first from the world of kite foiling then migrated to sup foiling. When Aguera is not fulfilling orders on the phone, he’s out, up and riding the ocean’s energy. “It is unbelievable how fast it is growing. How many people want to do it. If you see it live in person, that is when you want to do it. Watching a guy or girl going farther and catching more waves than you are—having fun, it engages your interest even more. Especially since there are so many crappy waves everywhere around the world; with Go Foil, the door is wide open to a lot of these places that can change to be rideable.” It seems every waterman in Hawaii who
is somebody is on your foils. How cool is that? Name a few stoked clients and what they have to say after they master your foils. “Watermen like Laird (Hamilton), Dave Kalama, Peter Cabrinha, the Spencer boys, Zane Schweitzer, Jake Jensen, James Casey to name a few. They’re all doing it on SUP’s, but you can’t leave out the surfers, and now I’m seeing a huge interest in regular surfing from the likes of pro surfers Matt Meola, Marlon Lewis, Albee Layer—they all want in on the fun. Kalama and I were in the water on a good glassy, four-foot the other day and having so much fun that he said, “This is as fun as doing any other sport like six-foot powder or riding huge waves.” Laird told me they are having so much fun that they look for smaller surf on the huge days over on Kauai so they can Go Foil. The rides on crappy waves on a surfboard can be so much fun—as well as riding a SUP farther than we ever had before. Dave Kalama one day was riding over two minutes 45 seconds on one wave when he timed it, going over half a mile. I think one day he even went longer and farther, but he didn’t time it.”
Dave Kalama caught on to getting lifted and is a natural at it.

When you built Kai’s foil, what changes in design and concept from the kite foil design? “Primarily I had to invent a new wing design which is part of the Go Foil patent we have filed. The new foil concept creates more lift at slower speeds, which is what was needed for SUP and Surfboards to perform. With kiting, towing or windsurfing you have a good power source to get speed for the faster wings then we previously used in those applications. Stand-up paddleboards and surfboards have a problem of getting the necessary lift to get up at a much slower speed and still perform at a high level. People had foiled on the SUP before, but it was using the old technology of the thinner wings we had been using for years. With my years of experience making a lot of different shapes and designs of kite foils, I had learned what works for different speeds and skill levels for various types of riding. So with the knowledge I had accumulated from kite foiling designing, I decided to try something entirely different with a drastic change in wing thicknesses and profiles, and see if it would work for the SUP. In my mind, it would work, but now, I just needed to build it and see. When I finally came up with the actual foil ready to ride,
I called Kai Lenny, said I had something ready for him to test. He was in France, so I tested it out myself one day at Sugar Cove here on Maui. The new wings were creating much better lift than ever before. I could get up easily! It was a huge breakthrough, and I was super stoked, but now I had a new problem—which was a long mast or strut length. I was using my regular length kite foil mast, which is about 38 inches long. I quickly realized the kite foil mast is too long to be safe when I was on my SUP. The extra length would put the wings right in my face when I wiped out. So I went straight back to my shop, cut my mast much shorter and rebased it. I was out on the water at Kanaha the next day putting it to the test. Now I could foil without putting myself in danger! It was another breakthrough. I made a Facebook video with my GoPro that day and posted it. I tagged Kai Lenny. He messaged me that he wanted to try it when he got back from his trip. Kai being the freak waterman athlete that he is, started doing fantastic things on it in probably less than an hour! Surfing all over the small shore break waves by his house at Sugar Cove.” Tell us about your foils, how many designed, sized wings do you have? “For the Go Foil for SUP and surfboards, there are three sets of wings now and counting. One is the Nalu, a smaller size wing setup for faster waves, surfboards or smaller/lighter weight riders. Second is the “KAI” model, which is what most people are riding, and is the
Paddle or paddle in, the GoFoil surf break in Kahului is a good place to learn to ride.
standard. The third type of wings is called the Maliko and designed for downwind, heavier riders, and weak waves. Marlon Lewis and James Casey are using these wings on small surfboards and pumping around on little swells. Marlon even caught three waves without coming down off of a foil on his first day trying them. He was on his 5’10”.” What about fuselage and shaft lengths, do they stay the same of is there a variation in sizes? “Right now we are using the same mast and fuselage on all the setups. As we progress and can get more stuff ready for production, we might do other sizes and variations. We are always experimenting behind the scenes from what we have available to the public. We do use some shorter masts which are suitable for beginner applications.” Where can people get your Go Foils and what’s the time frame on getting them? “You can purchase directly from our website (gofoil.com), or participating Go Foil dealers, as well as Starboard Dealers who offer our Go Foil with the Starboard Tiki logo on it instead of the usual AA logo. Time frame right now is around 60 days to get a Go Foil. We are making more tooling at the moment, so time frames will get better as we produce more foils in the near future.” What’s your word on safety, etiquette, and where to do this. “For safety, we
strongly advise everyone to wear a helmet, leash, and floatation device. Respect and stay away from others in the water! Stay away from very shallow water less than two feet deep. And it’s best to learn while towing behind a boat or Jet Ski to get the “foil feeling” if you have never foiled before. Towing in dead flat calm waters will increase the learning curve ten fold and is a lot of fun to do by itself! We see a big following from boaters doing wake foiling with a Go Foil. For your first attempt to use it in waves, go in small surf, knee to waist high. First timers, should never attempt to learn in bigger surf as it is more dangerous until you learn what to do and not do.” Lastly, how much fun are you having on them? “Personally, I am having so much fun Go Foiling that if it is good foiling weather, I am out there in the water with a bunch of other Maui foilers. I even have 70+-year-old guys acting like kids foiling—hitting the beach every day that it is good. I am part of a little test group and acting like kids going out every chance we get. This morning is the same with a bunch of testers’ trying to decide where to foil. It is really like starting a whole new sport that you are super excited about—being so stoked that we are all talking about it on the beach after our sessions. Right now I am missing it, and they are all in the water riding without me, have to run and ‘Go Foil’—it’s turning into a verb catchphrase!”

Up in Ventura, California, Chris Guziet from Carbonerro Paddles and partner Kent Hardley have been kite foiling for the past several years and a year and a half ago got hooked on the SUP foil rage. How and what prompted you and Kent to start SUP foiling? “After kite foiling for several years, we both realized we had a serious problem—an addiction to foiling. There’s nothing more amazing than that feeling you get flying across the sea and catching open-ocean swells. You feel like a bird or a Pelican. We came to a conclusion early on that kite foils were way too fast for riding waves, and if you tried to go too slow they would just drop off foil,” says Guziet. We did a lot of experimenting early on. We tried shorter masts, different custom wings, shorter lines, and smaller kites, but nothing came close to what we are experiencing now. “It wasn’t until we heard about Kai Lenny through our mutual Santa Barbara friend Jerry “the God-Foiler” Shalhoob, that Kai was paddling into swells on Maui on his board with a foil designed by Alex Aguera at Go Foil. This was the precedent that showed us it was possible to do what many of us had only dreamt.” What makes Pelicans Surffoil different from others out there? “What makes us unique is our ability to do rapid prototyping. The process of designing to testing a wing typically takes no longer than three days— unless the surf is good! To accomplish this, we have embraced new technologies such as 3D printing and cloud-based fluid simulation programs. Along with the help of a few friends, we test everything ourselves. Whether we’re towing behind a boat or Jet Ski, riding waves or flying kites, we are always checking for foil speed, vibration, turning capabilities, lift and glide.” Hardley adds, “Having Chris’s father Clary “Wings” Gutzeit talk to us about his experiences as a hydrofoil boat operator on Oahu in the 70’s doing inter-island ferrying and explaining all the changes and improvements that Boeing made throughout his career at Seaflite was invaluable information. A lot is going on with hydrofoils, and no one foil can do it all, but we’re working on it. All foils have a certain amount of lift relative to the weight of the board and rider to the energy (power and or size) of the waves ridden. So like surfboards, there will be many sizes of needed to accommodate the varying sizes of riders and waves. Our P27 Ghost Rider is a great all around wing; it’s stable, has a tremendous lift and
incredible glide. Whether you weigh 120 or 240 pounds—this wing will work for you. We have ridden them in sloppy 1 - 2-foot surf at six mph to 3-5 feet overhead at 19.8 mph comfortably. We also like to test the wings top speed by towing them behind a jet-ski, and the P27 was comfortable to as fast as we wanted to go which was 25 mph, although we didn’t experience any wobble or cavitation it felt fast enough. Quote below from Rey Vellinga’s book Hydrofoils: Design, Build, Fly. “The lift you get from a foil increases at a rate square to the speed. Doubling the speed increases the lift by four times. Tripling it increases the lift by eight times.” So when you’re dropping in on a wave, your body has to compensate for increased lift by adjusting the angle of the foil (putting weight forward) and then changing weight back a little allows you to slow down. When you go into a turn, typically speed increases so again a slight weight change forward is required. Once your body learns to do this, it becomes as easy as riding a bike.” What do you offer regarding various sizes of foils? “Currently we have one design the P27 Ghost Rider which we believe to be a fantastic entry level to immediate foil. We are currently testing two smaller 24” surf foils which are not in production yet, but we are excited about their qualities and should have those available in the next few months.” Construction? “All the technical stuff is on our website. Just hit the purchase button and look at Product Description.”

LIFT LI F TFOI LS.COM C O N TA C T : I N F O @ L I F T F O I L S . C O M
Out of Puerto Rico comes a company that has been around for a while. While building boards and watercraft within, they were already involved with foil crafts for the kite boarding market. We got to talk with Nick Leason from Lift Foils as the foil industry has seen a keen interest within the SUP and surf market growing over the past year. Nick, how long has Lift Foils been in business, seems before building MHL Custom’s, your team was already manufacturing kite boards? “I took an interest in hydrofoils and started to make my own in 2009. We set up a local manufacturing business in Puerto Rico that focused mostly on high-end SUP’s and hydrofoils primarily for kiting. We ended up building a fair amount of race oriented SUPs for an elite group of athletes, and we helped carve a path for hydrofoils. There were years that we would show up to the trade shows and be the only brand featuring foils.” From kite boarding to kite foiling, when was the transition and why? “We got into kiting when the sport first developed and we rode traditional boards for years. When we fell in love with the foil and felt its potential, it was tough to ever go back to a conventional kite-surfing board. In fact, I haven’t ridden a twin tip in years. The feeling of the foil is so smooth, unique and fast that it’s hard to push it aside. It’s the best toy in the quiver. It’s been hydrofoils since day one.” Now with the move toward SUP and surf hydro foiling, what kind of market and
direction do you see with Lift Foils or do you see it as a small percentage of your market regarding the future for SUP and surf? “At Lift, we have obviously been true believers in the growth of hydro-foiling, and for that reason, we have put such tremendous efforts into design and growth. Our business right now is strictly focused on foils. I think that hydrofoiling in the world of surf and SUP is here to stay and has a very bright future. For me, when I test new gear in the wind and waves, it comes down to feeling. I participate in as many sports as possible, mostly those connected with nature—I know a good thing when I feel it. I have been getting the most amazing rides in mediocre surf, and I can’t wait to go back out. I surf until my arms can’t paddle anymore. So if you ask me, I think it’s going to be big. Will it completely take over an existing side of the sport such as traditional wave riding? Of course not, but it adds a new avenue of fun, and it is extremely useful. I just saw that Kai Lenny crossed an ocean channel from one island of Hawaii to another on his surfing hydrofoil. That to me is so monumental and cool. It says so much about the potential of the sport. We travel the world to ride a never-ending point break. Now I can surf down the coastline in the summer time or have an amazing surf session in knee-high slop. Hydrofoils—yes please!” Tell us about your products, seems the kite foils that were experimented back in the day attached to SUP and surfboards are thicker, fatter, wider and more forgiving than the kite foils. “What we are seeing and experiencing is that a surfing/
sup foil requires a greater amount of lift at lower speeds—achieving that with larger wing surface areas and higher amounts of camber. You want to match these two components to a riders weight and speed. We see larger wings because most are riding in smaller surf. I have ridden my kite foil in waves that are overhead—it’s a challenging task, but pretty exciting and fast. In all honesty, I prefer to surf on my larger wings in smaller, playful surf. Right now, what people need is control so that they can get acquainted with the feeling of a foil under their feet; then you will see them move to something a little faster and more maneuverable. At Lift, we have been creating different foil series with different sizes. Just like boards, you can have a variety of wings for different riders and conditions. We already have multiple designs to choose from and lots more available for the summer. The fun part will be getting the public educated and involved. It’s a great subject to think about and discuss. It’s fun!” Is Lift Foils already operational and selling product? “We sure are! We had a big setback this last fall when the main building at our factory burned to the ground. An event like that can take your breath away and maybe get you to call it quits. We rolled up our sleeves, accepted our losses and focused on the positive aspects of change. It allowed us to redirect our business and focus on what is most important. Believe it or not, we are stronger than ever. We expanded our manufacturing to a global operation, and by focusing on hydrofoils, we get to expand our lineup and offer real diversity for the public.

A one-stop shop for your foiling needs. We are just getting the wheels rolling again, but we have product to sell, and it is the best that we have ever produced. Give it a try, and you will see.” A product, which seems to be getting a lot of buzz is your propped Foil, can you tell us about that? How it works, electric motor, how fast, battery life and safety precautions. “Our electric hydrofoil (the eFoil) is our latest and greatest. Up to now, hydro foiling has been this exclusive sport for the elite few that can master the balance. I wanted to change that. I wanted to build a foil system that anyone can use, anywhere in the world and that’s exactly what we put together. It’s been years in the making, but the eFoil is finally here and will hit the market this summer. It’s an amazing toy. I could write an
extensive article on the details that make the eFoil unique, but here are the basics on how it works. We essentially took our knowledge of hydrofoil design and construction, and we created a propulsion system to power it. Of course, we like nice toys and like to carve some real turns so instead of designing some bulky product that doesn’t flow through the water properly, we pushed the limits of what could be done. Our board is relatively small and easy to maneuver, the wings are the same as what you would use on your SUP, and the motor is a small hydrodynamic thruster that delivers a remarkable amount of power. The board houses a marine grade Lithium battery and advanced electronics that are safe and reliable. I am 170 lbs. and I can go 15 knots for 1 hour. That’s a great ride. I can also reach speeds of 23 knots, which is relatively fast on a foil. Maximum rider weight is about
230 lbs. Everything has been designed to be user-friendly and safe. The electronics have advanced automatic regulation so that the rider does not have to worry about anything. The eFoil takes require little maintenance and very easy to use. The beauty of this product is that the propulsion system acts as an additional stabilizing feature and it makes balancing so much easier than traditional foils. The rider has full control at their fingertips. I honestly believe that this will open up foiling for those that live by any body of water. It is also the best way to learn how to foil if you are a surfer and plan to ride waves on a foil. Our basic hydrofoil package for kiting/ surf/SUP starts at $1300.00 delivered to the US. Our product is full carbon and top of the line. We are not currently carrying SUPs, but there are easy ways to adapt a foil to a SUP or surfboard.” STANDUPpaddlemagazine.COM /

Mounting The Foil Plate We have updated the installation guide to reflect changes based on the UV surface coating found on Starboards and a few other surfboard and SUP brands. Most boards have no surface coating, but if you run into one, please follow this procedure to get a good bond to the base resin material instead of the surface paint/coating. Keep in mind that this surface coating is generally very thin, so it only takes a small amount of sanding with the 220 grit sand paper to get through it. Also, if your board has a heavy “Vee” bottom, you may need to consider using a board with a flatter tail bottom area. Enjoy the mounts!

1. Basically, if there is a surface coating on the board—you’ll want to lightly sand through it using a 220 grit sand paper.

2. After you’re down to the baseboard material, clean with a light mixture of soap and water. Use half of the included alcohol wipes to clean. 3. Tape the surface area where your mount will go which is usually the back third of where the base plate ends. 4. Use a Scotch-Brite pad to lightly abrade the surface. Use the rest of the alcohol wipes to clean and let the surface dry thoroughly. Slice a strip of the adhesive protection sheet off to the bottom of the base plate and align your bottom but make sure you can pull the entire protection sheet off. 5. Using your hand, press the plate onto your bottom. Apply pressure to the entire plate to assure the adhesive bonds to the board surface. 6. Reinforce your adhesive bond by applying pressure—in this case using the weight of your foot (but make sure you have padding on the other side of the board). STANDUPpaddlemagazine.COM /

WRIGHTSVILLE
SALTBOX II
A great board for the beginner just looking to cruise and tour the back waters, as well as more advanced paddlers looking for a great utilitarian type of design. This super versatile board has a displacement nose with a flat bottom for stability. It is a great board to load up with gear to go camping fishing, or board the dog for a morning paddle. Lots of gear fastening options available such as cup holders, rod holders, and bungee tie downs. Custom aesthetics, color work and wood veneer options are available.
A performance surf SUP that is very similar in its hydrodynamic theory to its older brother (Simulator), but with some added modern design concepts. The deep single concave carries through the whole bottom and paired with a 5 fin set up, it gives you drive, speed and maneuverability. Custom aesthetics, color work and wood veneer options are available.

BLUNT NEEDLE

Available in full carbon fiber, traditional fiberglass, or innegra constructions. We offer custom options such as wood veneer, carbon work, graphic and fabric inlays, and color swirls are available.
Designed as a scaled up big wave gun, the Albatross is a great board for downwinding, finding/ riding any bump in the ocean or gliding on big open ocean breakers. It is also just as fun to paddle on a cruise through the backwaters. The design features double concave with vee through the 2 plus 1 fin set up for control and maneuverability. Available in full carbon fiber, traditional fiberglass, or innegra laminations. We offer custom options such as wood veneer, carbon work, graphic and fabric inlays, and color swirls.
A time tested design for sharp, wave-piercing entry. If you are serious about racing, fitness, or just plain paddling fast then the Epic Race is the board for you! Features include a flat bottom in the midsection to slight vee through the tail. Thunderbolt Sportswear thunderboltsportswear.com
From Thunderbolt Sportswear, “Our Pants feature classic design, perfect fit, and smart details executed in advanced four-way stretch fabric. Tough on the outside, soft on the inside. Breathable and weather-resistant and allergic to dirt and stains. Unlike most performance pants, the fabric feels substantial, like denim, and features a reinforced, no-stretch waistband. NanoSphere is a durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment inspired by the waterand-dirt-resistant properties of lotus leaves, which prevent dirt from adhering to their surface. Fabric fibers are coated with nano-particles, which form a three-dimensional surface that repels water, grease, dirt, and stains. Liquids roll off the surface as easily as they do off a lotus leaf.” We took these out for a test as a dress-up and a surfdown—super comfortable fit, best we’ve seen and felt on land and on the water. In fact we found the Schoeller softshell is combined with a tough, abrasion-resistant exterior, a soft-brushed interior that make these pants extremely durable yet comfortable enough to wear all day. The fabric moves when you do, stretching in all four directions. If you’re looking for adventure wear and comfort, The Thunderbolt Sportswear Original Jeans – Mark II is definitely A Must Buy Product 2017.

Defunkify
defunkify.com Defunkify is clean and green Developed by material scientists and chemists from the University of Oregon, DeFUNKit is a solution that you use to wash your clothes in place of regular detergents. It can be used for both hand washing and machine washing, so long as you use the correct amount of the stuff (e.g. the smallest pack can treat up to four shirts or 450 grams worth of garments). Do note, it’s not a replacement for regular washing (e.g. it can’t be used for spot stain removal and it’s not antimicrobial), as it’s merely a special treatment that removes any buildup in garments that cause odor while coating the fabrics with natural odor blockers, so you can sweat in your clothes without stinking them up. We gave it the nose test—it is A Must Buy Product 2017.
Sven Can See svencansee.com The Safest Way To See
Sven Can See is an anti fog spray that you apply to your helmet, visors, sunglasses or goggles before use. It says the colder the weather the longer you should let it sit before wiping it off. When we tested it we noticed that even after only about two minutes vs. the 10-minute recommended—it still works wonderfully. It does cause a slight clear buildup if there is a large amount of condensation that accumulates. So just make sure to give it a
light wipe with a soft cloth if the buildup occurs. If you’re having fogging issues this is the product to keep your visibility. The pen-like applicator is accompanied by a lens wipe; it is odor and toxic free. Before spraying glasses, it is recommended to clean away any dust or debris from your lenses to have the ultimate experience from the application. A Must Buy New Product 2017.
