The end of winter in SL draws near, so I am going to take you on a vacation from all that let’s head south to enjoy some warmer days and balmy evenings. You can decide how far south you want to go; it may be just south of the equator or a tropical island down in the southern hemisphere where we are in summer. Your pick.
This Auden Modern Cottage from Trompe Loeil dropped into Fameshed back at the start of January and ever since then I have been slowly decorating it for this photo shoot. Someone once asked me how many hours I spend on a scene like this. To be honest, I have never really added it all up, but this one would have taken 30+ hours including finding items, setup, and photos.
The starting pieces were the Teddy Set from Zaker. I knew this was the lounge suite I wanted for this scene to add a pop of colour. I played around with the colour-change options for the sofa and chairs and this was further altered as I added pieces around them. I love having the ability to use HUDS with furniture for just this reason.
The lounge/living room area just developed around these central pieces and some areas changed as I found newly released items that would work better. An example of this was the Reclaimed Display Shelving Driftwood from Trompe Loeil that came out while I was setting up the corner window area. This meant I had to change the colours of the furniture that was there to go with it but, again, this is where those precious HUDS come in very handy.
The area under the stairs was a fun area to decorate as I wanted to create a little reading nook that would get the sun and was away from the hustle and bustle of the main lounge area. The Yeti Set from Zaker was the perfect fit and that lovely fluffy lounger would be the perfect place to curl up with a book and cat enjoying a sunset view. There are definitely cats in this home!
The kitchen area was a tricky one as I had trouble finding a kitchen to fit. They were either too big, the wrong way round for the shape, or too small. In the end I used part of the Wonder Kitchen from Erfe Design. I, sadly, had to forgo using the lovely big cabinets, but that is the joy of modular furniture; it makes it easier to fit spaces. To replace the cabinets I used this China Cabinet from the McLane Kitchen from {Your Dreams}. I do love some mixing and matching!
I had fully intended for the nook in the kitchen to be a dining space, but then I used that area for a photo shoot for the Shiloh Set from CHEZ MOI and realised the set just looked perfect in that area, so it stayed. I found some fabulous decor as accessories and they all stayed as well. This means that whoever is in the kitchen can chat with those reclining in the nook and not feel so isolated. The joys of open-plan living.
The last areas to decorate were the outdoor areas and these were constantly evolving from day to day as I found different furniture items or changed my mind about how I wanted the space to look. This house has a lot of outdoor areas and it definitely stretched my imagination and inventory to find items to suit.
Another question I get asked often is how many photos I take for a shoot like this. The answer is that it depends. I actually took 15 photos for this house and only used 7. I had other rooms to show, but I can only show you so many! It is difficult to choose sometimes.
I hope you have enjoyed your stay in this home and had a small reprieve from winter. I also hope that it encourages you to think about redecorating your own SL home and getting ready for spring. It is coming.

Missy Buttons was a woman like no other. At least that’s what her mother used to say; although, being the staunch Francophile she was, she preferred to say ‘non pareille’. Missy didn’t care for her mother’s mania over the French but would gladly tag along with her on the numerous trips they made to Paris.
This time, however, Missy decided to stay home, and with a good reason: for the first time in several years, she had someone in mind to go out on a date with on St. Valentine’s Day. Apparently being nonpareil was not helping in that regard. There had been a string of boyfriends— or ‘gentlemen callers’, as her mother liked to say —but that parade tended to stop right before the holidays. Come Christmas, the visiting friends ceased to call her or to even pick up her calls when, in a fit of desperation, it was Missy who tried to reach them. Fits that grew more frequent as the dates loomed closer on the calendar.
“Holidays jitters,” explained her mother. “Guys get nervous about committing to what they consider a family affair. And after Christmas comes St. Valentine, the mother of all dates. Don’t expect to see them again before February ends.”
“Not my Magnus,” Missy retorted in her mind. She had attended Catholic school, of course, she knew better than to talk back to her mother. But it was true: Magnus was different from every guy she had
met, and he was the best hope she had for a date on St. Valentine’s.
Everything about him was special, as special as the first time they met at the club he managed. The Parlour Lounge and Ballroom, better known simply as ‘the Parlour’, wasn’t in Missy’s Landmarks folder, but she got there through a TP offered by one of her friends. And she landed right next to Magnus; so close that she was sure she had bumped him. Others would say that she was just impressed by the dapper, welldressed, clean-shaven guy and seized the opportunity to talk to him. But he, unaware of Missy’s presence, after receiving her IM apologizing for having bumped him, simply answered a perfunctory “no worries” and went back to his business.
“Wasn’t that kismet?”, she asked her friend. “What were the odds of me landing next to him?”
”You want me to do math in the middle of a party?” responded her friend.
But Missy was too excited to catch the sarcastic tone in her friend’s words. She was busy trying to elicit a more enthusiastic response from Magnus other than the monosyllabic answers with which he was reacting to her unashamed efforts to engage him in a meaningful conversation. He didn’t respond as she expected even when she mentioned her abilities as a DJane and offered her services to his club. He only
suggested she fill one of the applications that were available in a box, next to the donation jar. Finally, she decided to make the boldest move in her book: she sent him a friendship request, which he accepted as a matter of fact.
That was all she needed to throw herself into a rampage of reveries about the bright future that was in stock for her— with Magnus at her side, of course. Her friend told her she was delusional, but Missy was convinced she was only planning ahead for the happy days to come.
Thus, from that day on, the Parlour became her favorite gin mill. She spent there all the time she was in Second Life, waiting for Magnus to log in. And as soon as he did, she chatted him up, asking him about his day, his plans, and whatever other topic came to mind. He always responded with courteous, albeit brief words showing no intention to take the conversation further.
all these days, she had forgotten to submit the application for DJing at the Parlour. Now, that would be a really big move! She rummaged in her inventory for a good while before she found the note card. She had made the New Year’s resolution to sort out her inventory and get rid of all the stuff she hadn’t
”’Your’ Magnus seems immune to your charms,” commented her mother, air-quoting the possessive. And, unaware of the pandemonium she was about to unleash, she added: ”I suppose you’re going to need a bigger move.”
”A ‘bigger move’, you say?” asked Missy. “And what would that be, if I may know?”
”No idea. Only you know all the situation details and can answer that question. Think it through.”
But Missy, alas, was not very good at thinking, let alone thinking through. Rather, she considered herself a woman of action, and thus she decided to take action. She realized that since she had been busy fantasizing about her future life with Magnus
used in years, but deep down she knew that would never happen. Besides, at that moment she had more important things to do.
After completing the application, she landed at the Parlour, whose LM was now conveniently stored in her Favorites folder. Magnus wasn’t online at that moment, but that didn’t deter her from her attempted “bigger move”. Somehow, she had concluded that a word-of-mouth recommendation would be more convincing than a simple application which, after all, was available to anyone.
From that point on, the story becomes hazy and confused. What we know for a fact is that Missy seized control of the Parlour’s stream and began DJing, oblivious to everything around her, much to the chagrin of the club’s patrons who were mostly dancing in couples and didn’t like the change into a
heavy metal sound. So heavy a metal that some of them suffered from ear bleeding, mind you.
What happened next is also unclear. Some say the patrons revolted against Missy and demanded that the stream go to the original Slow Radio they were dancing to. Others insist that unable to control the mob, Missy abandoned the DJ position as soon as the protests threatened to become violent.
Regardless of the details, Magnus showed up to try to restore a semblance of order amid that chaos. When Missy noticed him, she saw her knight in shining armor who had appeared just in time to rescue her from an angry mob. Yes, Missy wasn’t
good at reading faces, either. What she thought was Magnus’s resolute determination to help her was a well-concealed anger over the chaos Missy had created. He was too polite to yell, and ejecting her would be an act of violence that wasn’t part of his DNA, so he courteously asked her to vacate the premises. Only after she had left did he add her name to the sim’s ban list and delete it from his contacts list.
Back home, Missy was comforted by her mom with a big cup of hot cocoa.
“With small marshmallows, as you like it,” detailed her mother with a smile.
”Thanks, Mom. I guess I’m done with this dating business. It’s too complicated for me. I better try to come to terms with the idea that I’ll die alone.”
”Nonsense, sweety!” she replied. “You’ll see— you’ll be back in the saddle in no time. I promise. Holiday jitters, darling. That’s all.”
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Sarah E. Brenham
“Your candle burned out long before your legend ever did” Candle in The Wind - Elton John.
Rather than go on a tour today, I want to talk about something: Black History Month. In my opinion, we don’t celebrate this nearly enough. To a point, I understand. American Heart Month also takes place in February, and if we’re being completely honest, most people focus on health-related topics rather than cultural ones. But the two are more intertwined than you might think. For example, did you know that Vivien Theodore Thomas, an African-American surgical assistant, helped develop a corrective surgery used to treat the congenital heart defect tetralogy of Fallot? I believe both month-long celebrations can be celebrated just as much as the other. So let’s take a closer look at Black History Month, pulling it into the spotlight alongside American Heart Month.
Black History Month began to take shape in 1926 in the USA, when Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History declared that the second week of February would be Negro History Week. This particular week held significance because it encompassed the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. For those who might not know, Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, famous for his leadership during the Civil War and for abolishing slavery in the US, and Frederick Douglass was a slave who freed himself, gained fame as a powerful orator and writer, and became the father of the abolitionist movement. Although Negro History Week did help the African American population make some strides, the celebration saw little growth until after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. While Kent State University proposed Black History Month in February 1969, they did not celebrate it
until 1970. In 1976, President Gerald Ford made it a national occurrence.
While the US has made great strides in recognizing and celebrating Black History Month, I believe that we can do more. When I was a schoolgirl, Black History was only briefly mentioned and discussed. The US can do better. I would say it was only a few years ago that we truly began to recognize the importance of this month-long cultural celebration. With the internet at our fingertips, we can find even more ways to take part and educate ourselves and others. Second Life is a great environment to come together, where we can attend or host Black History Month celebrations globally. Communities like SL allow us to socialize, learn, and grow in ways we may not be able to in Real Life.
As a personal example, I came to know more about the world thanks to my experience with Second Life and joining a sorority during college. Sorority life introduced me to women from many different backgrounds and cultures. Learning from them helped open my mind to the path of constant learning and self-discovery. Second Life further exposed me to different lifestyles, personalities, cultures, and beyond. When you meet people with an open mind, you can better evaluate your lifestyle and ideologies.
Recent events combined with a more globalized society have led to more light being shined on the crimes against people of color, including African Americans and other Black people. Black History Month is a time to celebrate our neighbors, learn more about them, and get a jump-start on combating the hate against them. Humanity is full of similarities, but we also have many differences, which should be honored and preserved. That is the core idea behind Black History Month: remember, celebrate, learn, and respect.
