FOR THE BOYS
Arya Braveheart
It is May 2024 and I have realised that I have been very negligent in providing some specific content for the men of SL for a very long time. This was pointed out to me by a friend and he is quite correct so I decided to set about rectifying that.
However, as I began looking around for a house, furniture, and decor, I was struck by how narrow the choices are for the males out there in Second Life. I realised as I shopped and looked about that I was tending towards certain stores and designers who seemed to have more items that were created with men in mind. Even the men’s events didn’t appear to have much in the way of home & garden items, although perhaps I am judging on one or two rounds and this is not the norm.
Nevertheless, I have put together some scenes inside this fabulous Urla House from Erfe Design and I hope it inspires some of the guys to visit of the stores I have used and get decorating.
The house itself is 300LI and is 21x63 in size. It has 2 upstairs bedrooms, a room that could be an office or a bathroom, a huge living room area, and an entranceway that could be utilised as a separate lounge, a sun area or, as I am showing you, a kitchen and wine area. It also has a usable garage space for a car or a games room or bar. I have added a few bits and pieces to the outside look for the sake of this article, but the house is a stunner!
The first space I created was this lounge and music area and I kept the music theme going as I was laying out the furniture and decor. This would be a great area for playing guitar, listening to some records or just chilling out and enjoying some beats on the drum. I picked the African instruments up a couple of weeks back and I just knew they would come in handy for this photo shoot.
In the kitchen I have used a set that I really wanted to showcase as it is just gorgeous with clean lines and easy to assemble parts. This Wonder Kitchen is also from Erfe Design and includes the Kitchen Cabinet, Upper Cupboard, Long Cabinet, Bar, Barstools, and Plant. I have added some other bits and pieces to create the scene, but honestly this set works just as well on its own. Perfect for the man who loves to cook.
I have been saving these Canucci Wine Cellar pieces from KraftWork for exactly this moment as I wanted to create a wine storage and tasting area for the man of this house. He is obviously a collector and so he needed a space to enjoy the wine and to share a glass or two with friends and family. I had fun creating this space and will be copying this into my own house once I have finished here.
This under the stairs area turned into the perfect area for a reading nook and a great place to enjoy the view out of the huge windows on the front of the house. I decided to keep this area very clean and uncluttered so that our homeowner can just relax and read a magazine or enjoy a glass of wine while staring at the stars. The Autumn Naturals set from Simple Things was just right for this space and I also finally got to use this gorgeous artwork from Noxwood.
Area 5 is also clean and classy with another amazing set from Erfe Design as the focus. The Matilda Living Room set is super stylish and definitely adds a touch of class and distinction to this home. I have set it up in the corner of the living room area as a reading area away from the noise of the TV. I have also blended a piece from Simple Things into this scene that was meant for a hallway, but I like what it brings to this look. Please note, however, that the Architect. Matera Wall Panel covers the original
FOR THE BOYS
art from the Lighthall set as it was blue and didn’t match the colour palette I was going for.
I have also cheated in this lounge scene as I found that when I took the photos, the background items from the other scenes became too distracting, so I created a room separator using the Sarai Wall Panels from Laviara. In the Urla House this room is very open plan. The main furniture in this room are the very adaptable Taylor Leather Modular Sofa and Table System sets from KraftWork. I love that you can create a sofa that suits the size and shape of your room as well as providing for however many people you have in your home.
As I wander through this home now that it is finished, I can’t help feeling like the owner might arrive home at any moment and he won’t be happy with some random woman invading his space and drinking his pinot noir. Cheers!

THE OUTER GARDEN
Sarah Brenham
Iam sure everyone knows the saying “April showers bring May flowers.” This statement may mean different things to various people. For me though, that sentence is about rebirth after a trial. We are not always privy to the transformation someone or something goes through after a turbulent time. I now would like to bring you to a place where change is always happening right before your eyes. This is important to see, as it will help you understand those around you and the world at large. Let’s go.
The Outer Garden is a sim which I would call a playground for adults, but more on that later. The first thing that you will notice when you arrive is the beautiful blend of Winter and Spring. This juxtaposition I believe can best be seen is in childhood. When a kid becomes an adult, they experience a lot of unpleasant changes, but they also get the opportunity to learn lessons that can shape them into the individuals that they want to become. I know that most of you just want to know what this place has to offer, so let’s get on with it.
You will find spots here that will make you remember all of the pretend play that you used to do when you were a kid. There is one area here that those who used to love Harry Potter and/or Dr. Who will absolutely adore. Another space that you will discover here makes me think of a location that the book Bridge to Terabithia mentions. This spot can also be seen as romantic and is a great option to take a significant other. Believe it or not, another example of a beautiful paradox is a romantic relationship. How, you ask? Like childhood, those who have a life partner will experience both joy and pain with them. Yes, I know I went on a tangent again; let’s get back to the tour.
On the theme of childhood, there is half of a gazebo that has a full-length mirror with clouds slowly moving up it, resting in the middle of it. For the Disney fans who are reading this article, what movie does this mirror immediately pop into your mind? If you guessed Snow White, you win! Have you ever wanted to have a tea party? Now you can by popping
into the small building that they have set up for just that. Did you know that some men’s favorite smell is that of a pie being baked in the oven? Yup! That particular scent reminds them of their mother. So, the next time you are looking for a place to bring that special gentleman in your life, may I suggest taking them to the fort to enjoy a selection of yummy food? Yes, you can have a slice of pie or two there. You’re welcome.
The last area to see here is the small amusement park. Even though I am a foodie, this spot is my favorite. How come? Being physically disabled in Real Life, I am unable to go on most of the rides that amusement parks have. But in Second Life, I can do everything! What ride do I prefer here? I would have to say the merry-go-round!
Now I think that it is a great time to let you all in on a little secret. There have been many times when I had no idea what the topic of the next article would be. This situation happened for this piece as well. The good part of when this occurs is that I get to look through the Destination Guide for inspiration. As you probably know, the Destination Guide is massive. So, when picking out a sim to showcase, I focus on the ones that were just added to the list. I am so happy that The Outer Garden was recently put in the lineup. This is a place that is not only thought-provoking, but also beautiful and fun! If you have been searching for a spot to take your mate or even yourself on a date, then come here. You will be thankful if you do.

FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS IN SECOND LIFE
Iused to build. A lot.
Jay Anson
Looking for some way to get through SL while spending as little Linden as possible, I availed myself of the opportunities for creativity that SL had to offer.
In a long-ago life, and longer-forgotten avi, I actually made a few Linden making houses with as low a prim count as I possibly could.
We came up with the idea of having our own houses on skyboxes. And I began to think in earnest. I wanted to show her ME in capital letters. What better than something I had made myself?
So, there we stood, my girlfriend and I, last night at the Firestorm Sandbox. I had dug into that bottomless pit called my inventory and pulled out an old, untextured version of my money maker, an apartment building. It had been resting quietly for years, and my thought was that I could retool it as a smaller cabin. Retexture it with modern textures, and I could say I built my own house.
And then along came mesh, and I eventually gave up. It didn’t make any sense to me, and renting was just the most obvious solution.
My girlfriend and I plan on moving in together somewhere in the reasonably near future. We’re adults and love each other deeply. We are also, though, interested in seeing each other in our “native habitats.” What would it be like to interact with each other in an environment that was entirely our own? What could we learn about each other from that experience?
Nah.
It was obviously a ten-year-old design, using ten-year-old technology. It looked childish. Primitive. Not something I intended to live in now— I had grown past it.
So, my ever-pragmatic and resourceful girlfriend took us to Roost Homes. I had a few requirements: living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Those last two? Call me a traditionalist, if you like, but I crave realism and immersion when I come home in SL.
Lovely houses! Absolutely beautiful! Built well, low prim, beautiful in both form and function. But a bit oversized for a guy who was going to be living by himself for the foreseeable future.
Sadly, tonight, she is busy and unable to accompany me, and I am pounding out an article that should already have been done. Taxes, deadlines…blame it on RL. I’d even be telling the truth.
Now, at Elements Log Homes, I had high hopes. I love log cabins, particularly in the winter with frost at the windows, snow on the ground, and a fire blazing away at the foot of my bed.

And they are gorgeous, those houses. Craftsmanship in the building is evident, and I raise my cap to the individuals who are so much more talented than I. But again, I ran into the same problem as before but at a larger scale: The homes are better suited to the Yellowstone Ranch than a writer and his cat.
But, oh, my GOD the sim is just gorgeous.
At Galland Homes, the sizes became more manageable, but with downsizing comes a loss of need for certain rooms. And it appears that the first to go are the bathroom and kitchen. Just like the others, the craftsmanship is impeccable.
Just not quite suitable for two grumpy older gentlemen of our respective species.
The talent is all here. Good Lord, is it. And I want to say to each and every place I visited and mentioned here that you are so more talented, more gifted than I. I just want a small, efficient cottage arrangement in the trees. Where I can write, where his nibs may lay by the fire, and we can all relax in cozy comfort when the girlfriend comes to visit us.
On a snowy night, with a blazing fire and a pot of homemade soup burbling softly to itself as it simmers on the snow. All of us under the comforter, streaming
or laughing. I understand there are custom home businesses out there, and I may end up going to one.
I may also, stubborn man that I am, just take up mesh and say “Here I am!”
I don’t think she’ll be too disappointed.

LUXE AQUARIUM
Compe Lockwood
The oceans lure us. From the surface and below, our seas thrive with aquatic wonders ready to explore. It is a whole different world down there, teaming with fish most of us will never see, one exception being those of us in Second Life. For we have access to SL’s Luxe Aquarium, with fish ranging from guppies to gargantuan.
If fish is your forte but saltwater is not, Luxe is the place for the thrill of the gill. Housed in four levels,
had huge rooms with tall glass,” Angel continues. “So I built it here. This is one of the oldest locations in the LuxeLa community.”
The ground floor is a tease of what is ahead but do not hurry. There is much here to take in. Rock and reef formations flank the walkway. Small fish, one, three, six or so... Then a great school of fish, seemingly out of nowhere, glides as a unit. Surrounded by ocean beings, Avatar visitors realize they, too, are part of the aquarium. Underwater vistas are beside you, above, and below.
three for observing underwater wildlife and one for parties/meetings, massive glass walls and floors offer spectacular viewing of marine life and more. Thank you Angel, for sharing your creativity. She built this place.
Each floor is accessible by elevator. “I have always loved aquariums,” the site builder says, conducting an impromptu tour as Jurassic Park-size sharks swim above us— that’s right, above us. Behold the power of glass ceilings.
“I was inspired by a massive aquarium in Dubai that
“You have to look for a while to spot a favorite fish, as they do actually swim,” says Angel. Adding about the first floor, “There are tropical fish here, and an eel is around here somewhere.”
The fish are so lifelike, you can almost taste the tartar sauce. Individual fish (not in schools) are scripted and move about autonomously. Schools of fish pour in from every direction. Collectively, the underwater imagery is stunning and realistic. After viewing Luxe Aquarium’s vistas of the briny deep, an apology is owed to your goldfish.
Though some denizens of the deep are subtle and only seen when looked for, the second floor is much different. You don’t need to look for these creatures. They look for you, and some with really big teeth.
Great white sharks meander along. Not many of us have ever seen a fish bigger than a human up close in RL. But you see them here. Keep your hands out of the water.
“Second floor is for our larger aquatic exhibits,” says Angel. “Turtles, dolphins, and sharks are currently

here. I have two more sharks I’d like to add. I also love that the dolphins actually swim.”
Individual fish, especially the colossal ones, are scripted and swim autonomously. It looks easy but it is not. “Making the big fishes’ movement realistic was a bit of a challenge with space limitations because they are so large,’’ explains Angel.
should know about this place.”
Fourth floor is the rooftop, available for hosting, parties, and exchanging tales of the three oceans below.
The venue is ever-changing for the Luxe Aquarium. “I will be adding more jellyfish, stingrays, manta rays, sharks, and unique tropical fish,” says Angel. For her, the Luxe is a work of fun. “I love it here,” she says with a smile. “It is one of my favorite places.”
On to the third floor which is “otter this world,” with a real otter floating on its back, looking up at us, and seemingly smiling. Other fish, big and small, share the otter’s domain.
Angel relates, “Something unique about this aquarium build: when we go to the third floor, you can actually see the fish under you through the glass floor. It’s also fun to see the dolphin jump out of the water up here at times.”
A walkway just above the water’s surface offers a path for pedestrians, avatars, and Ariel the Mermaid when she gets her legs.
For many of the aquarium’s visitors, the third floor is a favorite. It offers water mixed with alcohol. A beautiful and well-stocked bar is here for socializing and fish-watching through nearby windows.
Angel shows us, “The bar blends perfectly with the colors of the rest of the aquarium. I would like to add jellyfish soon to this space, but currently this is a really nice date night spot.”
And there you have it: three floors of sea creature enchantment. “I love it,” says first-time visitor DJ Buchsbaum. “This is great subject matter,” she adds while looking at the fish looking back at her. “People
With animesh creatures and other animals life-like in every detail, Luxe Aquarium offers a glimpse into another world.

Romanticism was an artistic and intellectual movement that was characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism, as well as glorification of the past and nature.
This fantastic exhibit is expertly decorated to envelop the senses as you travel through history and its different phases of Romanticism from the 18th century, to darkness, to landscapes and modern.
A must see exhibit by one of SL’s premier photography artists.
