Redefining the ModernWorkplace
We spoke with Nick Maxwell, co-founder of Eclat, a cutting-edge coworking space that is redefining the shared office experience. With its unique combination of luxury, technology, and community, Eclat is setting a new standard for professional environments.
What inspired you to create Eclat, and how is it different from traditional coworking spaces?
When the Eclat founders were looking at the current coworking market, we felt there was an opportunity to do it better and create a more elevated experience. We believed we could incorporate high-end hospitality and state-of-the-art technology. But more than anything, we felt we could offer a level of connection and a sense of community that we hadn't seen in the market.
Can you walk us through the journey of how Eclat started, from the initial concept to opening your first location in Hawthorn?
The initial concept began 10 years ago when I had a conversation with one of our other founders, Jesse Hayes. He talked about the idea from a creative perspective, feeling there was a gap for places where creatives could go. We then trialled the concept in Williamstown, where he set up a photography studio and office spaces. We spent about six years trying to find someone who believed in the concept enough to invest in it once we’d proven it.
Finally, I met Paul Tuddenham, who loved what we put forward. He had space in the development he was currently building, which is where Eclat landed. Over the last three or four years, we worked through the fit-out and brought all elements of the Eclat experience to life. Our wonderful staff were the ones to help tie it all together and realise the vision.
The term “Eclat” means “to be brilliant.” How does this concept manifest in your workspace design and member experience?
In terms of design, the space speaks for itself. People are blown away by the fit-out from the moment they step foot in the door.
For us, it’s all about attention to detail, from the acoustic ceiling panels to the amenities. We tried to consider as many aspects of the member experience in the fit-out as we could. We even created our own furniture company called Forme Design with Mark Miller, which allows us to custom make most pieces housed in the space.
Outside of design, it’s about going above and beyond for our members. For small to medium businesses, it's a real challenge to resource additional amenities and extras for your staff, and that's where Eclat comes in. Our team thrives on helping members with anything from running events and finding ways to support business growth to creating unique networking and business development opportunities.
You mention a culture balancing creativity, commerce, and connection. How do you nurture this environment at Eclat?
I think one of the most powerful things about Eclat is that there are so many different businesses here, and you can always learn something from a different industry. To have access to new people every single day means you'll always learn something. It might not necessarily correlate directly to your business, but it allows you to think differently, and address challenges other businesses are facing. In turn, this helps you shape your own business and ideas.
How do you see Eclat evolving the concept of shared working spaces, and what's your vision for its future? Are there plans for expansion or new innovative features in the pipeline?
There are certainly plans for expansion. We’re currently working through the feasibility of different options for future development.
I think the evolution has mostly come from the changes in the world since COVID. We all became very transactional, constantly logging onto Zoom, having meetings, and logging off. People forgot how to interact with each other. They didn't realise how important the 'water cooler' chats were, and how not only their personal happiness and satisfaction dropped but also their professional development was hindered during that time. Coming out of COVID, we've seen that those who immerse themselves in the Eclat community are truly thriving and appreciate all the different opportunities Eclat has to offer. ■
Paringa Estate’s glass-walled restaurant, where wood-fired warmth meets vineyard vistas, sets the stage for Chef Nick McGonigal’s Modern Australian mastery. Here, he unveils his signature Citrus Trifle with Coconut and Verjus Sorbet recipe.
Method Ingredients
2 oranges (can substitute with mandarins)
Citrus Gel
100g blood orange purée (or any other citrus purée available)
50g sugar
2g agar agar powder
Coconut Soil
2L coconut cream
50g brown sugar
Oat Milk Curd
1L oat milk
100g sugar
15g vanilla paste
40g corn flour
16g gelatin
Whipped Coconut Cream
200g coconut cream
25g icing sugar
Verjus Sorbet (optional)
360ml Sally's Verjuice (or another brand)
610ml sugar syrup (equal parts of sugar and water, brought to boil then allowed to cool)
Serves: 8 portions
Preparation time: 4 hours
Citrus Gel
1. Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan, mix well and bring to a boil.
2. Pour into a container and set aside in the fridge for 30 minutes or until set.
3. Blitz set mass in a food processor or with a handheld mixer until it becomes a smooth and glossy gel.
Coconut Soil
1. Bring coconut cream to a boil and allow mixture to split.
2. Continue cooking until the milk starts to caramelise to a light brown.
3. Add brown sugar and boil for a further 30 seconds.
4. Strain liquid, then lay out the caramelised coconut soil on paper towels.
Oat Milk Curd
1. Combine oat milk, sugar, vanilla paste, and corn flour in a large saucepan. Add bloomed gelatin at this stage.
2. Bring oat milk mixture to around 85°C, whisking continuously during the cooking process to prevent the corn flour from settling and burning.
3. Remove from heat when the mixture reaches temperature and has thickened slightly.
4. Let mixture cool to 60°C, then add gelatin.
5. Set in the fridge for 4 hours.
Whipped Coconut Cream
1. Chill coconut cream in advance.
2. Weigh chilled coconut cream and sugar, then whip them with a whisk until stiff peaks form.
3. Fill the mixture into a piping bag.
Verjus Sorbet
1. Combine verjus and sugar syrup in an ice cream machine.
2. Churn until the mixture freezes to sorbet texture.
Assembly
1. Start with blood orange gel at the bottom of a glass or bowl, filling approximately 1cm layer.
2. Put diced segmented orange on top of the gel.
3. Break up oat milk curd with a spoon for easier fitting in the chosen vessel. Fill to 2/3 full.
4. Cover the oat milk curd with coconut soil.
5. Pipe whipped coconut cream around the edge to garnish.
6. Serve with verjus sorbet.
Speak & Share Change Makers
In this Change Makers feature, we explore the vision of Speak & Share, an Australian organisation aimed at dismantling the stigmas surrounding mental health. Through our conversation with co-founder Ben Farish, we gain insight into how Speak & Share is building a culture of openness and understanding, one story at a time.
How have your experiences shaped Speak & Share since its 2021 inception?
Speak & Share was founded by three friends who’ve shared life’s highs and lows together. Like many, we have faced challenges: losing a close friend to suicide, a family member’s workplace accident, and parental separation. Together, we navigated these trials and emerged stronger.
In early 2021, during the pandemic, we realised the toll isolation was taking on people, including ourselves. We wondered, “What more could we do?”
The three of us knew that we wanted to positively impact our community, and here we are today, motivated to encourage vulnerability and build upon a positive community culture.
As certified teachers with years of experience working with the youth, we've seen the profound impact of lockdowns. Our friendship solidified when we noticed a shared desire to help others. Now, driven by this mutual passion, our goal is to diminish the stigma surrounding mental health and to make discussions about well-being a routine part of conversations, whether with friends, colleagues, or the broader community.
What drives Speak & Share’s mission?
Our mission is anchored in reshaping how mental health is perceived. Many Australians face immense challenges that ripple across families and communities. Speak & Share seeks to provide education on mental health strategies, equipping individuals with the tools they need.
We envision a future where no one feels isolated in their mental health journey. Through informed support and a united community, we aim to lessen the devastating impacts of mental health struggles and build a culture of compassion and understanding.
Why is the sunflower such a powerful symbol for Speak & Share?
The sunflower embodies everything we stand for. Its ability to thrive under challenging conditions mirrors the strength we aim to instil in individuals facing adversity. Like the sunflower, we want people to find their voice and stand tall.
Symbolising long life, the sunflower reflects our desire to leave a lasting impact. It represents perseverance, growth, and the hope that no matter how harsh life’s conditions, we can flourish.
As a logo, it’s vibrant, wearable, and radiates the positivity we strive to bring to our community.
What’s next for Speak & Share?
Our goal is to become a leading force in Australia’s mental health landscape. We aspire to create meaningful, lasting change by launching innovative initiatives and building authentic connections. Speak & Share envisions a legacy of advocacy and positive impact for generations. ■

Melbourne Market Insights Growth Opens Doors for Buyers and Sellers
Melbourne’s real estate market has recently been experiencing an increase in housing supply, which is creating opportunities for both buyers and sellers. With 45,372 properties listed for sale in November 2024, Melbourne leads Australia’s capital cities, reflecting a 16.8% rise in listings over the past year.*
This expanded inventory allows buyers greater choice while still providing sellers with a competitive market supported by Melbourne's lifestyle appeal. For Marshall White, we have seen remarkable activity, transacting between $600 million and $700 million in both October and November, reflecting the sustained strength of the market.
The increase in listings has brought a healthier balance to the market. Buyers can now explore a wider range of options without the intense competition seen in recent years, while sellers benefit from the demand that Melbourne consistently attracts, both locally and internationally. Suburbs such as South
Yarra, Brighton, and Camberwell remain hotspots for high-end properties, showcasing the city’s prestige market resilience.
As the spring selling season winds down and the holiday season approaches, new listings are expected to decrease, as is typical at this time of the year. For buyers, this may mean locking in competitive prices, while sellers can look forward to serious and motivated purchasers.
With Melbourne’s strong fundamentals - ranging from liveability to its status as a cultural and educational hub - the city’s property market continues to offer promising opportunities for all parties involved.
Looking to sell? Connect with your local Marshall White team today to take advantage of Melbourne’s real estate momentum in 2025.
