INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2023

For IWD23 we sat down with four inspirational women making an impact to their community and creative professions to discuss what the day means for them.

BEHIND THE BUILD: A RESORT-STYLE HOME

Glamour, style and sophistication. We sat down with the owner/builder of this recently completed home to understand the process and inspiration behind the build.

FEATURE ARTICLE

VICTORIA WILSON BATEY

Meet Victoria, General Manager at The Big Umbrella, one of the charities aligned with our Jellis Craig Foundation that rescues surplus food to create meals for vulnerable Australians experiencing food insecurity and homelessness.

thebigumbrella.org

What is The Big Umbrella’s mission?

We are a volunteer-run charity, trying to alleviate food insecurity for vulnerable and marginalised people. We take rescued food and make restaurant-quality meals which we serve and share with our friends on the street at Federation Square at our twice-weekly pop-up. The day that we rock up to Federation Square or an emergency situation and there’s no one in line, or needing a meal will mean job we have done our job. The other important mission for TBU is that we are aiming to be the most sustainable kitchen in Australia – we are currently operating pretty much off grid with zero waste and producing a huge amount of fresh produce for our meal program, this is in part due to the outstanding support from the Jellis Craig Foundation.

What does your day-to-day look like?

I call myself 2IC to the CEO and founder and it’s pretty much doing anything that needs to get done so that people get a good meal.

Why is International Women’s Day important to you?

IWD is such an important reminder for us all about the sacrifices and suffering of our sisters in the past who have enabled us to be able to live the quality of lives we enjoy today. It also reminds us how far we’ve yet to go to be able to address gender inequality with regard to political representation, the sharing of household chores and childcare, and the ability for women to move safely about the community day or night.

SUSAN PEHAR

Meet Susan Pehar, Founder and Director at ducksnest. interiors and ducksnest. furniture. Susan’s entrepreneurial and curatorial skills along with her eye for design, plus her quietly confident approach to business have all contributed to her ongoing success. Susan embodies those who enrich our surroundings through art, culture and design.

ducksnest.com.au

What do you love most about what you do?

I am so lucky to be able to work with clients in the bespoke interior design space and to be able to import beautiful European designer furniture. The professional relationships that I have built are incredibly important to me. I love that the clients I work with have a deep respect for authenticity, quality, and originality in design.

What does feminism mean to you?

The first words that come to mind when I think of feminism is power and equality in all sectors of society. Women are practical and intuitive, and they can offer a sense of passion in design. For me, International Women’s Day is a celebration of the achievements and successes and the growth of women over the generations.

REBEKA MORGAN

Meet Rebeka Morgan, Director and Founder of BuildHer Collective. Rebeka’s story of starting her business to help women build homes for profit is one that has resounded with so many. Rebeka’s vision and mission has resulted in many collaborative and exciting partnerships with Jellis Craig. We celebrate Rebeka and all those breaking barriers and paving the way for the next generation of leaders.

buildhercollective.com.au

Tell us about your background and how BuildHer Collective came about?

I come from a construction background and moved into building residentially. We started BuildHer Collective 6 years ago after coming to the realisation that so many women can feel overwhelmed or can feel like they should know about building or that they’re asking the wrong questions of builders and tradespeople. BuildHer Collective exists to help bridge that gap, and to help other women renovate and build for profit.

What has been your

proudest accomplishment so

far?

From a personal perspective, definitely my kids. From a professional perspective, it has to be the community that we’ve built. There’s so many women in our community that are helping and supporting each other. Seeing other women succeed and go on and do the things they didn’t think that they could is an amazing thing to watch.

You have three daughters, what is most important to you in the way that they are raised?

I hope that I am raising my three daughters to be independent, strong minded, accomplished women in society. I try to show them the importance of intellectual learning and I do this through thoughtful conversations, reading and listening, and of course ongoing education.

Meet Joanna Kitto, Director at West Space, a contemporary visual art gallery in Melbourne’s inner-north. Joanna is drawn to creatives that use art as a way to platform social justice issues. We were drawn to Joanna for her leadership and creativity, and we celebrate her and the countless other people who are making their mark in the art industry.

westspace.org.au

What does feminism mean to you?

Feminism is about not having expectations on a person based on their gender expression.

What makes you the happiest?

In a professional sense, what makes me the happiest is when I see the impact of visual art on our audiences. So many artists are tackling the big issues and I am lucky that at West Space, our audiences can step into our space and be confronted by those big concerns about the world we live in. One such memory that stands out in my mind is watching a young girl come into the gallery with her mum, as an 8-year-old (or so) she wasn’t sold on the idea of an art gallery visit! After a few minutes she found a piece that really resonated, and it was so incredible to watch her mindset and the way she was experiencing our space shift into something more positive and amenable.

Tell us about West Space Gallery?

We are a leading independent contemporary art gallery that is housed in the Multi Arts Precinct in Collingwood Yards. We are a space for artists to develop new ideas and present ambitious projects with our support. We present a series of exhibitions by local artists and national artists and present them in conversation with international concerns.

What does success look like to you?

I am most successful when I recognise how inspired I am by the women around me. I look at other women and am truly inspired by them. That’s what success looks like.

jelliscraig.com.au In Focus | March 2023 07

Behind the build:

A resort-style family home.

We sat down with Koray Kolege, the owner-builder behind 48 Westgate St, Pascoe Vale South, a recently built resort-style family home to talk about the inspiration for the home, the design process and what is on the horizon for his building business, RUBIKS CUBED.

jelliscraig.com.au In Focus | March 2023 08
48 Westgate Street, Pascoe Vale South

This home is ‘Project Four’ for your RUBIKS CUBED business. Tell us about RUBIKS CUBED.

I had always been involved in developments and building, but the first foray for RUBIKS CUBED was when we purchased a block of land but couldn’t find anyone to do the build. Despite being a lawyer by trade, I decided to roll up my sleeves and get the job done myself. That was really the triggering step to starting our building business RUBIKS CUBED.

We specialise in family homes. This was where we started so this is what our business is all about – building quality homes for families to live in long-term. We are always trying to push the boundaries with each project and our focus is always about improving the lifestyles of each homes’ occupants.

COVID had a major impact on the types of homes people wanted. We’ve seen those shifts first-hand where our clients really want to be immersed in their homes so that when things change (as we know they can), people know they have a safe and expansive space around them.

Tell us about your design process for 48 Westgate Street. Where did you start and what was the vision?

We purchased the land with an existing house on the block in late 2021. The first point of call when we build is always to think about the family that will be living in the home for the next 10 to 15 years. The existing house didn’t have any special heritage features and wasn’t going to be the right size or fit for the family we were building for, so we knocked down and basically started with a blank canvas.

First, we start with the necessities. We consider the number of bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas that will suit the family that we see living in the space and at each step of the way we consider how we can achieve these necessities.

From this point on we ask the question – how can we elevate this to a home that we can be proud of and that will be suitable for years to come?

So now we have the framework of the house, then we move to working from the outside in, considering at each point the proportions of the house from the front façade all the way inwards.

For this project we collaborated with BuildHer Collective on the interiors of the home and we really feel that the results speak for themselves.

jelliscraig.com.au In Focus | March 2023 09

The arches surrounding the façade and alfresco area are stunning. What was the design inspiration?

The existing property had two established loquat trees at the rear of the property. Seeing those trees took me back to my childhood as my grandfather had a loquat tree in his backyard and as soon as I saw those trees, I knew they had to stay. Loquats have a very Mediterranean feel so that had us thinking about where else we could tie this feeling in a modern, Melbourne way, and this is where we were inspired to incorporate arches.

We really feel the arches and timber structures are not only a nod to the soft aesthetic, but they’re also functional in that they zone the areas well –they have a very considered impact.

jelliscraig.com.au In Focus | March 2023 10

What are three words you would use to describe the home?

Relaxed, Fun, Elegant.

Which is your favourite room in the house and why?

The main living area is my favourite room of the house and there are two reasons for this. I try to ensure that in the houses we build, the living, family and dining areas are all quite close to one another. Family time together is very important in my own life, so this is usually reflected in the houses we build. The living area is always the place where the family conjugates which is what I love about it. The other reason I love this space is that there is lots of melding of the indoor and outdoor spaces – through greenery, or the reflection of the pool onto the glass.

Tell us about the beautiful selection of stone, tile, and timber throughout. What made you drawn to those materials?

It was key that all of the elements tied in together and created a wonderful feeling of warmth throughout the space. BuildHer Collective were instrumental in bringing some of our ideas to life when it came to the selection of finishes and all the details were so considered down to the finest detail.

We’re really happy with the end result where everything from the blinds, tiles, and walls all tells a cohesive and warm story.

What’s next for RUBIKS CUBED? What does ‘Project Five’ look like?

We’re pretty unique in the fact that we work on projects that are right for us. We have a few ideas, but we don’t have anything locked down yet for Project Five, rather it is only when we find the right canvas and we have a strong vision then we will move forward with our next build.

We’d love to do something down bayside way, definitely a family home and I’m sure we will push the boundaries in some way!

My Neighbourhood

You’re an up-and-comer in the sales industry. Tell us about your real estate career so far.

I started in reception 12 years ago and then navigated through to a stint in Property Management. An opportunity came up to join Scott Nugent’s team which I did in an administrative role and then I eventually took the plunge in to a sales role with him.

What inspired you to pursue a career in real estate?

When I was younger, I used to check the local Leader newspaper every week and pick a property on each page that I would want to buy. When I started in reception, I never saw myself in a sales role but when the opportunity arose, I knew it was time to bite the bullet and give it a go – that was 5 years ago now.

What are your goals?

I’m not heavy into to goal setting (I know that’s not the “typical” real estate agent) but I do love cheerleading people on in our teams for their goal setting and supporting and pushing people in our team to achieve their milestones.

What do you enjoy most about being an agent?

Building relationships. I especially love working with new home buyers, helping them on their journey to purchasing their first homes and making them feel comfortable in the processes. There is nothing better than when clients come back to you when they are ready to sell that first home you sold to them.

As a young female real estate agent, have you faced any unique challenges or obstacles in the industry? How have you overcome them?

Hayley White understands the importance of developing a strong personal brand to stand out in a highly competitive industry. Hayley believes that success in real estate comes from a combination of hard work, dedication, and a willingness to continuously learn and adapt to changing market conditions. We sat down with Hayley to chat about life as an up-andcoming agent, the importance of International Women’s Day and her best recommendations for dining out in the North East.

As a young female agent I do sometimes struggle with some clients not approaching me for information on our properties. I have overcome these challenges by ensuring my knowledge on our properties and campaigns is unparalleled.

What is a must-read book or podcast you recommend?

Do you have a favourite sale ? What made that so memorable?

I had a young first home buyer couple that I worked closely with for 18 months before they purchased their first home during lockdown restrictions. It was an off-market sale in Montmorency, a suburb they never thought they would be able to buy in to. Getting to work with them for such a long time where I know a lot of other agents would have given up was such a great feeling! We became close friends; it was great getting to see them each week throughout their pregnancy and then seeing their first born in their new home that I helped secure for them.

What do you love most about living and working in Eltham?

It is a great sense of community throughout the Diamond Valley. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to sell my friends parent’s homes. Particularly seeing all the old school photos still hanging up in these properties!

What does International Women’s Day mean for you? Why do you think it is important?

International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to have open conversations about gender equality and what we have accomplished. It allows us to reflect on how far women have come in this area.

What does feminism mean to you?

Feminism is extremely empowering as it gives us the ability to recognise and respect all women’s experiences, identities, knowledge and strengths.

Can you tell us some of the best advice you have received?

A quote I love is from one of my favourite books by Dolly Aldteron. I think most of the women in the Jellis Craig Network will relate to this quote –
