1. Lock up While this may be obvious, it is often overlooked. A 2007 survey of Australian households by Woolcott Research found that more than 35% of Australians still leave doors and windows unlocked when they aren’t home. Deadlocks and window locks operated with a key not only make it much harder to break into the home, but also can prevent an easy exit, making it harder for burglars to remove large items from your home.

you share your upcoming holidays or new purchases in these public forums.
6. Don’t provide temptation Don’t leave boxes for new purchases such as a computer outside where they are visible. Keep valuable items such as laptops and jewellery out of sight when you aren’t at home. This is also a great rule for items kept in your car when it’s parked either at home or away. 7. Make it look like you are home Get someone to collect your mail and leave your contact details with a friend or neighbour who is able to keep an eye on the house. 8. Mark your goods with your name This makes them easier to identify and recover, and prevents burglars from reselling them. 9. Review your level of insurance cover In 2005, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) estimated that 70% of Australian homes were underinsured, placing
