THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN DECK Decks are an important part of the Australian lifestyle. Care and maintenance of your deck is essential. Decks are an external feature and they are exposed to external weathering elements such as moisture and the sun. For ease of maintenance conduct a 12 monthly inspection. Here are some tips on how to maintain your deck and help lengthen its lifespan:
•R egular sweeping and cleaning can be carried out to remove grime, dust or leaves. A soft fibre broom or a blower will remove surface debris.
•A wet rag is required to remove dust. Detergents are not required as they can wear the surface leaving a dull look.
•R egular maintenance will help protect the timber from the damage caused by ultraviolet light and the weather. It will also stop the timber prematurely cracking and aging and keep your deck looking vibrant.
•A pply a surface protectant or stain every 12 months or earlier if required as the finish begins to show signs of dryness or loss of cover.
•U se floor mats at the entrance of your deck. They are critical to deck maintenance. The aim of the matting system must be to remove dirt and grit from the shoes of people about to walk on the deck.
•U se micro-fibre mops made for external cleaning use.
•R emove pools of water as soon as possible after it has rained to avoid water damage.
•W hen watering pot plants on decks be aware of water leaking on to deck. Excess moisture can leave dark stains in the timber.
•A pply furniture protective pads under furniture items to minimise surface scratching.
