LIGHT SHINING IN Not every home or apartment is blessed with an abundance of natural light. Older, period style homes in particular are often darker than their modern counterparts. But most of us enjoy living in an abode that has at least some areas that allow the sun to shine in. Luckily there are a few tricks to making a room look lighter if the windows are small or nonexistent. A good place to start is with colour. Your best bet is to paint your walls in white or beige. The neutral color helps to bounce light around the room, providing a feeling of brightness. Likewise, lighten your floors white by putting a white rug over them, or by staining wooden floors with a white or light-colored stain. The other benefit of a neutral hue is that it never dates. Next, seek to reflect light. In order to create reflections, hang mirrors on a wall across the window to reflect the natural light coming in. This will brighten things up as well as create the illusion of space. Also, try using area lighting to shed some light in dark corners of the room. Pendant light fixtures, for instance, will look particularly chic in the dining room or in a reading or study nook. Window coverings are also an important consideration when trying to lighten a room. For example, thick drapes are an effective way to conserve heat loss in winter, but they can make a room look particularly heavy and dim. Plantation shutters or semi-opaque blinds on the other hand, still provide some energy conservation but also deliver maximum light as well as a modern, attractive look. Another extremely effective way to bring light into a space, is to install a sky light. Windowless rooms such as bathrooms and hallways benefit enormously from this kind of addition. Obviously this is a more costly exercise than a coat of paint but it can really change the appearance and overall feel of a room. And these days, skylights come in a variety of styles and sizes to ensure they look tasteful as well as functional. Craig J. Stephens Managing Director / Officer in Effective Control M 0418 547 938
