ANZAC DAY
There is probably no more moving moment for any Australian than the haunting, solemn sound of a bugler’s Last Post as it cuts through the morning chill at an ANZAC Day dawn service. This year’s ANZAC Day service at the Shrine of Remembrance in King’s Domain on St Kilda Road commemorates 102 years since the landing of Australian and New Zealand soldiers at Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey on April 25, 1915. It was Australia’s first foray into the four-year Great War that eventually cost the lives of more than 60,000 of its young men and women. The first ANZAC Day commemoration was held in the trenches in France in 1916 and has been part of Australia’s culture ever since. However, ANZAC Day remembers all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
Melbourne’s iconic Shrine of Remembrance was completed in 1934 after a design competition. The winning designers, returned-soldiers Phillip Hudson and James Wardrop, were inspired by one of the seven wonders of the ancient world — the mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the modern city of Bodrum in Turkey. Visitors can assemble in the Shrine’s forecourt between 4.00am and 5.00am in preparation for the 6.00am dawn service, after which The Sanctuary, containing the marble Stone of Remembrance, will be open from 6.45am to 7.30am, and again in the afternoon from 2.30pm to 5.00pm. The official wreath laying service will be at 8.15am, followed by the Anzac Day march from Flinders Street along St. Kilda Road to the Shrine, which will step off from the first beat of the drum at 9.00am. For many, ANZAC Day is regarded as Australia’s national day, and a significant day for reflection on our sense of national identity.
