VAN GOGH AND THE SEASONS

From April 28 to July 9 the National Gallery of Victoria, in partnership with Art Exhibitions Australia, will exhibit Van Gogh and the Seasons as part of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series in 2017. The much awaited exhibition curated by Sjraar van Heugten, an independent art historian and former Head of Collections at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, is exclusive to Melbourne and is the largest collection of Van Gogh artworks to ever travel to Australia. Van Gogh is one of the world’s most recognisable artists, he had a very brief but immensely prolific career spanning just over a decade. Van Gogh’s works continue to captivate and inspire art enthusiasts and the general public to this day. The exhibition contains almost 50 Van Gogh artworks (49 in total), reflecting Van Gogh’s connection to nature and the seasons. The seasons held a profound meaning for the artist and represented the circle of life - birth, bloom, maturity and death. The exhibition signifies the greatness of nature and the enormity of the world or a higher force. Not only do Van Gogh’s works provide viewers with a rich sensory experience, but they hold much

significance to the artist and reflect many of the defining moments in his life, including the Dutch region of Brabant, where Van Gogh was born in 1853 and lived for much of his early life; Arles, where the artist experienced his most defining period of creativity; Saint-Rémy de Provence, where he was treated for mental illness in the Saint-Paul-deMausole asylum; and Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh committed suicide in 1890. The exhibition will invite viewers to contemplate the life and works of one of history’s most renowned artists, through his observation and interpretation of the seasonal changes in the natural world. You can attend the exhibition between April 28 and July 9 at the National Gallery of Victoria, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.
