MELBOURNE’S WINTER WONDERLAND
This winter Federation Square will host another Solstice celebration called The Light in Winter. The Solstice celebration falls on the Saturday night closest to the winter equinox, marking the longest night of the year. The program includes art installations, live performances, music, storytelling, food experiences and more. The much loved River Rink will also return for another year. The rink is large enough to hold 150 people at a time and will pop up again on the Yarra River Terrace following its popularity last year. Suitable for all ages, the rink will be open daily from 1 July – 23 July with 45 minute sessions starting every hour on the hour. Learners are welcomed and assistants will be available to rent in the form of Penguin and Seal shaped supports. The Yarra River forms a dramatic backdrop for skaters and as nightfall arrives the River Rink transforms with lights and colour projections. On select night the rink will come to life with performances, live music and themes.
If you need to recharge there will also be a great line up of winter warming food and beverages on offer throughout the season. Melbourne will also have the pleasure again this winter of hosting a 40-metre long, four-metre high ice slide, set up on Southbank’s waterfront. The slide will be ready on July 1 and will be open until July 16. It will take three days to construct and will be 100% real ice, created using a fine misting system at -12 degrees. Be sure to wear your warmest winter gear and prepare for the four seasons that Melbourne can experience in one day!
