Insight A Balm for the Soul In my teen years it was suggested by a counselor that I read “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. At first I was not interested because I literally thought the book was about a bird in a cage. However, when I was told what the book was about and that it was based on a true story; I borrowed a copy from the library and I couldn’t put the book down once I opened it and began reading it. Ms. Angelou was able to take writing and utilize it as a balm for her soul. Through writing she was able to find her voice again. Crocheting is a balm for my soul. I can pick up a crochet hook and yarn, that then becomes a therapy session. With me working out whatever I need to in my mind and soul. However, until, I began the magazine I had not realized how writing is a balm for my soul. It allows me to release some of the pain within and to share with others. What is your balm for your soul? If you have not found a balm for your soul, I encourage you to do so. Think of what outlet you use to relax and exhale. You see the soul is like a sponge; it absorbs emotion, thought, intention, perception and etc. So all of the thoughts you have experienced; whether consciously or subconsciously have been etched in your soul. The emotion you felt; whether it was joyful or painful, is there and they may come back to your memory whether you want them to or not. Sometimes they are so deeply stored, that though they are not remembered they may keep you sick, depressed or distressed. This is why it’s important to release the excess debris, stored in the memory bank; which no longer serves you. One person may utilize exercise as a form of release, another may use psychotherapy. It doesn’t matter what method you select to utilize as a balm. Just find one that works for you, because when left dormant the incorrect methods may be used for consolation. Such as food, intoxicants, sex. I encourage each of you to find a balm for your soul and utilize it to heal yourself and possibly to heal others. Love,

MERS-CoV the 411 Written by TK EL
Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is an epidemic which has been affecting the Middle East since 2012. As of the date of this writing there have been 536 reported cases of MERS in Saudi Arabia and since 2012 there have been a total of 152 deaths related to MERS in the country. To date the United States of America have had three known MERs virus diagnosis, the first confirmed case was April of this year when a male Indiana resident who returned from working in Saudi Arabia was hospitalized; luckily each confirmed case in the U.S. has fully recovered.
What Is Known About MERS-CoV?
“This virus has spread from ill people to others through close contact, such as caring for or living with an infected person. However, there is no evidence of sustained spreading in community settings. -Center for Disease Control Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is the underlying cause of MERS. MER-CoV is a coronavirus and coronaviruses have the ability to infect both humans and animals. During their lifetime most people will get coronaviruses such as a common cold; which are common and are more prone to infect children. In humans coronaviruses affect the respiratory tract. MERS-CoV is spread from an infected person to others via sneezing, coughing, touching or shaking hands and touching surfaces which contain the coronavirus and then touching ones eyes, mouth or nose. MERS-CoV is different from any other coronavirus that has been previously found in people. Symptoms of MERS have included fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) are working together and with other partners to 7

understand the public health risks from this virus. To date MERs has been confirmed in 18 countries with each case being linked to six countries in the Arabian Peninsula: Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Kuwait.
MERs and Hajj The CDC is encouraging people traveling to Saudi Arabia to discuss their travel plans with their medical physician. Due to the risk of MERS, the Saudi Arabia Ministry recommends that the following groups postpone their plans for Hajj and Umrah this year: • People over 65 years old • Children under 12 years old • Pregnant women • People with chronic diseases • People with weakened immune systems • People with cancer or terminal illnesses

Urban Cities Improve When Its Citizens Improve Written by Chrishara Wilkes
Robert Park, urban sociologist once wrote, “(the city is) man’s most consistent and on the whole, his most successful attempt to remake the world he lives in more after his heart’s desire. But, if the city is the world which man created, it is the world in which he is henceforth condemned to live. Thus, indirectly, and without any clear sense of the nature of his task, in making the city man had remade himself.” With this being said and studied, any attempt to change a city is futile if changing the citizens of that city is not a part of it.
“The freedom to make and remake ourselves and our cities is one of the most precious yet most neglected of our human rights.” -David Harvey The Creator gave all humans dominion over the land on Earth, and we have a right to shape the process of transformation, specifically in regards to urbanization. We weren’t just born in or moved to cities by chance. We were born to make a change! First, we must be the change. 11

Currently, many leaders and politicians are not embodying this premise, so it is not being reciprocated by the people that they lead or govern. I propose that if we really want to see change where everyone is on an equal playing field, accessing the same resources to growth and prosperity, which is our God given right, mindfulness training is needed for everyone, starting at the top.
We hear the word mindfulness tossed around a lot, but what does it really mean? It means being aware and fully present in the moment, meaning conscious of our thoughts and actions, because they not only affect us, but everything and everyone around us. We can no longer be satisfied with making sure our home is clean and tidy but that, that of our neighbors and community are as well.
We are all connected! Now since capitalism still rules, one may ask; how do we get the leaders involved? We make it cool and most importantly profitable to be holistically well. Health really is wealth. The more positive energy that we have and exude, the more that is attracted to us. So given the law of attraction, a city that is healthy and energetic is one that is also prosperous. This is definitely science, but it’s not rocket science. This is something that is very doable and attainable in our lifetime. We just have to get on the ball and BE. Now is the time to take all of the knowledge, experience and wisdom we have acquired and put it into action.
We are the saviors we have been praying for. We change ourselves, we change our city and we change the world! Summer 2014

The Actual Facts About JUNETEENTH Written by Kerry Allende El
African Americans who celebrate Juneteenth without qualification, embrace the idea that the slaves were freed on January 1, 1863. We were taught in the public school system that “President Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves on January 1, 1863”, however this would later be proven false. Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation only “declared that all persons held as slaves…. shall be then, thenceforward, and forever freed- but applied only to states designated as being in rebellion”. The proclamation didn’t actually free any slaves or destroy the institution of slavery itself. Again, it only applied to states in active rebellion, NOT to the slave holding border states or to rebel areas existing under Union control. In reality, it simply freed Union army officers from returning runaway slaves to their owners, under the National Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Any escaped slaves who managed to get behind the lines of the advancing Union armies and any who lived in areas subsequently captured by those armies no longer had to be returned because, in the words of the proclamation, they were “thenceforward, and forever free.” There were fifteen slaveholding states as of January 1863. The Proclamation applied to the ten states in rebellion, the ten states that were fighting against the Union government in Washington. Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation had to be enforced, by the military. W.E. B. Du Bois wrote in his 1935 essay:
“One has but to read the debates in Congress and state papers from Abraham Lincoln down to know that the decisive action which ended the Civil War was the emancipation and arming of the black slave; that, as Lincoln said: ‘Without the military help of the black freedmen, the war against the South could not have been won.” The Emancipation Proclamation was limited in many ways. It applied only to states that had seceded from the Union, leaving slavery untouched in loyal border states; such as Texas. Again, the freedom it promised depended upon a Union Military victory. Let us go backwards in time, for a minute that we may understand how Texas became seceded from the Union. The counties of Texas, sent delegates to a special convention to debate the merits of secession on February 2nd 1861. During this Secession Convention, the following was stated:
“We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable.” Summer 2014
14
Here we see that within the secession convention it stated that, “the African race had no agency in their establishment, that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race.” African American at that time comprised 30 percent of the State’s population, and they were overwhelmingly enslaved.
The false history used in the propagation of Juneteenth In an Essay called “Propaganda of History”, by W.E.B. Du Bois, he wrote that “European American scholars falsified the history of the Civil War in order to suppress the FACT that the United States government, “the Union”, had to call in Black Men to save the Union, abolish slavery and established democracy.” This idea that W.E.B. Du Bois is suggesting in his essay, factors in the attempts to make Juneteenth Day a national holiday. Juneteenth did not become a National Holiday in Texas until June 3, 1979, making Texas the first state to proclaim the Emancipation Day “Juneteenth” as an official holiday. There are at present 43 states that observe Juneteenth Independence Day in America. This is W.E.B. Du Bois a major victory for historians who have lied about the Civil War history, making African Americans look like helpless, recipients of freedom who did nothing to free themselves. We give honors to W.E.B. Du Bois for uncovering the European historian’s propaganda. Our people are feeding into this propaganda by celebrating this National Holiday that holds many flawed historical facts. The National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF) states, “It took over two and a half years for the news of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to reach Southwest Texas.” It also suggests that the enslaved in Southwest Texas were doing nothing to free themselves between January 1863 to June 19, 1865. This is totally incorrect history being pushed on our people. There were five Union regiments of African descent who occupied southwestern Texas for the duration of the war. These regiments became a part of the Union’s occupation force in Southwest Texas from 1863 to the end of the war in 1865. See National Park Service Soldiers and Sailors System. Search Regiments and submit a query for the Union 85th US Colored Troops. Two additional regiments of US Colored Troops were added to the occupation force in 1864. Submit query for 20th US Colored Troops and 62nd US Colored Troops. The NJOF, purports that Southwest Texas was, “the last geographic area in America were slavery was practiced” and that slavery came to an end there when Granger read his order in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. Galveston however is not in Southwest Texas. It is Southeast Texas. The Union Army under General Nathaniel P. Banks captured Brownsville, Texas, which is in Southwest Texas on November 1863. (See Harper’s Weekly, November 28, 1865. See Harper’s Weekly, November 28, 1863. The NJOF claims Juneteenth as the oldest celebration related to the Civil War, when in fact April 16th, 1862 was the earliest celebration. 15
The REMEDY

The truth is that African Americans played a critical role in their own liberations, and this story needs to be told and celebrated. African American soldiers were instrumental in the Union gaining a stronghold in Southwest Texas in 1863; in capturing Charleston, South Carolina, the Cradle of Secession, on February 18, 1865; in capturing Richmond, Virginia, the Capital of the Confederacy on April 3, 1865; and in driving the Confederate governor of Texas and his army out of Texas and the country into Mexico on June 15, 1865; four days before Granger arrived in Galveston with his General Orders No.3. Without knowledge of such historical facts, thousands of conscious African Americans celebrate Juneteenth Day. Knowledge of the successful efforts of victorious African American freedom fighters in the Civil War compels us to reject the history presented by Woodward and his unwitting disciples. Conscious men and women are victims of a very successful propaganda campaign and are apparently unaware of the facts. Section 2 of the Nevada legislation calls on educators to advance the false statement, that June 19, 1865 is “when the last slaves in the United States were emancipated.” Consequently, a lie has become law in Nevada. How has this happened in thirty-nine states when the accurate history is easily accessible? It has happened because the propaganda campaign identified by Du Bois was successful in mis-educating many conscious African Americans, and these African Americans have successfully institutionalized a lie that suppresses the accomplishments of their own ancestors.
We should celebrate the story of how America’s enslaved freed themselves by helping to save the Union. Such freedmen were heroes not spectators, and their story is currently being suppressed by the advocates of the Juneteenth national holiday. The victims, the mis-educated, must be made aware of the truth. Then after being exposed to the truth they should cease and desist from advancing Woodward’s lie by celebrating Juneteenth as the day when the last enslaved people got word that someone in Washington had freed them. Certainly, informed and knowledgeable people should not celebrate the suppression of their own history. Juneteenth Day is a de facto celebration of such suppression. Americans, especially Americans of African descent, should not celebrate that which suppresses the story of how our “new birth of freedom” was conceived. I would like all to see how false history plays a vital role in keeping the so called African American, today; in an inferior condition by suppressing his history. If you can teach a people about their own history you can control them. Through sin and disobedience every nation has suffered slavery due to the fact that they honor not the creed and principles of their forefathers. That is why the nationality of the Moors was taken away from them in 1774 and the word negro, black, and colored, was GIVEN to the Asiatics of America who were of Moorish descent, because they honored not the principles of their mother and father, and strayed after gods of Europe of whom they knew nothing. Today those Gods of Europe is their idea of our history being taught to us, and we celebrate it like it’s the everlasting gospel.

RAS ELHAJE Dakar’s Reggae, Hip-Hop, Soul Written by TK EL Ras Elhaje whose birth name is Cheikh Moustapha Diakhate was born in a town of Dakar, Senegal named Yeumbeul. Like several of the youth of Dakar, Ras left school as a teen due to poverty and his parents not being able to pay for his schooling. Influenced by the street music of Dakar, he began to write rhymes and would shortly afterwards make his musical debut in the Hip Hop Underground movement of Dakar. After rapping for many years, Ras then began to play guitar and was influenced by the roots, culture and sound of Reggae music. He says he was drawn to how the sound united all African music in one universal beat. This to him represented “One Love” and “Africa Unite”. Ras would record several tracks including; Reggae Paradise, Breaking News and Smile Riddim. Ras and his brother Gum, a well known guitarist would also form a music group named ‘Saraba” which means Paradise. Ras says he and his brother formed Saraba in 2009 as a way to represent the African culture through music. Saraba collaborates with other professional musicians for live and studio work and offers orchestrated and acoustic performances.
When we look at the genres (Reggae, Blues, Hip-Hop, Urban, Acoustic, Culture, Roots, and Dancehall) in which Ras Elhaje fits; we can then understand how his sound is very universal. . Ras offers a music style similar to Joseph Hill, Bob Marley, Alpha Blondy, Sizzla Kalonji and Garnett Silk. There are a few more names that could be listed. However, the fact that Ras offers a similarity to these greats, says a lot about the essence of the artist. Ras Elhaje has a much anticipated new album titled “YES AFRICA” slated to be released the latter part of June 2014. I had the pleasure of conversing with Ras Elhaje and am happy to share our conversation with THE REMEDY MAGazine readers. What is the name of your new album? My album is titled, YES AFRICA. One way to provide even more positive music about all the things happening in Africa. To help us evolve and move forward instead of standing still and thinking on bad memories. Lets say all is well in the motherland because it is not yet too late to have a fresh start. We shall always love the Mama Africa...we say YES AFRICA. What are the song titles? 1 YES AFRICA 2 LOVE LETTER 3 FARAFINA (MAMA AFRICA) 4 SAME LIFE 5 JAH IS MY LIGHT (I BELIEVE IN JAHGOD UNTIL DEATH) 6 LOVE SOLUTION 7 WHO CAN HELP THE I 8 PEACE AND LOVE 9 FIGHTAL SA LIFE 10 SUNUGAL SYSTEM 11 SENEGAL AND GAMBIA (NO MORE BORDER) 12 MANDELA (TRIBUTE) 13 I AND I 14 SAF SAFAL 15 BEGGA DEM (AFRICAN EXODUS) 16 POSITIVE Will you be touring? Yes, I look forward to touring the world and sharing my music.
Tell us about the album. What experience did you have working on the album? How long did it take to write, produce, record? The album consists of various themes referring to peace, love, the effects of neocolonialism and social problems that poor people experience living here in Dakar. However, another side of the album traces my experience from my childhood until now. Artistically I bring a very original touch. On one song I sing to Jamaican rhythms representing Senegal in the current Reggae Soul. I worked on the album for over 5 months, but I’m always writing. The new album has 2 songs written by others and also guest performers are featured on 4 songs. However, all the songs on the album are recorded and produced by myself in my home studio. Please tell us....What is your REMEDY to heal the world? Through my music, I want to raise awareness of the importance of everyone being united and supportive. The world needs solidarity to find its balance. I intend to succeed in what I do. I want to be able to reach out to the thousands of people who feel stuck in a hole and have been forgotten by the world. If music is a development factor I want to grow and develop my people.
The Global Fight to Respect, Protect and Educate Girls
Written by TK EL Around the world, respect for the the feminine has been lost; by both males and females. Female genital mutilation, sex trafficking, molestation and rape, child porn, banned from attending school, sold into slavery and servitude, child marriage and the list goes on. In several countries women must receive permission from a male relative (usually their husband or father) to drive an automobile, work, obtain employment, attend school or receive vocational training, traveling and starting a business. There are other countries where it is unlawful for a wife to refuse to have sex with her husband. In such cases he may beat or rape her, with no repercussion.
“The health and educational achievement of future generations is directly related to the physical and intellectual condition of today’s girls, who will bear and raise the children of the next decade.” - Girls Count Education, learning and knowledge have always been important to me. As a youth I was an A student and if you saw me, inquisitiveness and a book weren’t too far away from my reach. Being born at the end of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States of America afforded me certain privileges; including a right to receive an education; as both a person of color and a female. My parents would instill in me the story of our ancient foremothers who were educated, professionals, business women and leaders. remedymag.com 19 The REMEDY
In ancient societies female children were educated and women had rights. This is recorded in history all the way from Egypt, to India and even the Americas. Knowing this, I cannot help but wonder, when the bias toward educating female children began. Hatshepsut, Cleopatra, Queen Sheba and Khadija bint Khuwaylid wife of Muhammad are just a few women of Africa and Asia;, who were educated, regal, wealthy and business owners. So why is the continent of Africa behind when it comes to educating girls? The United Nations (UN) established the Millenium Development Goal which involves several initiatives; including eliminating gender disparity in education by the year 2015. Since its inception several nations have been working to comply. However, in 2014 there are still several countries which have not placed “the right to education” in their national constitution This is especially prevalent in poor countries and countries where education is not welcomed, especially for girls.
“Educated women are more politically active and better iformed about their legal rights and how to exercise them.” -Population Reference Bureau
Educating Girls In Africa When Selamawit Adugna Bekele of Ethiopia, an educator and advocate for educating girls was asked by The News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington: What are the obstacles to education in Ethiopia? She answered “There’s a big patriarchal system that gives less value to girls’ education. Parents don’t have what it takes to get their children to school. No one is going to provide notebooks for you. Poverty, unwanted pregnancy, early marriage. In Ethiopia, one in five girls get married by the age of 15. These are issues that we share with other Africans.” On the continent of Africa there are only 93 girls in secondary school for every 100 boys. Which has increased from a 61 to 100 ratio in 2000. In North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and Western Asia there are still barriers for girls to attend school. While poverty is the main barrier; there is also the issue of not being able to provide sanitary restrooms for girls, the need for girls to perform daily chores at home, child marriage, pregnancy and violence. In North Nigeria 1 of every 20 females complete high school and half are married by age 15. Those that fear educating females will take them away from the family and/or make them independent, should consider that an educated woman is able to assist her children with learning and can be more effective as a merchant in the markets or when trading. Therefore, she is an asset to her family, nation, and society as a whole. Summer 2014

Islamic View of Women
While Islamic extremist would make one believe there are no rights for Muslim women. Here are some facts. As of date Iran has a 65% female student population and leads the world with the most female undergraduates. Currently there are two Muslim women serving as heads of state: President Atifete Jahjaga of Kosovo and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed of Bangladesh. They are not the first as there were six previous Muslim women who served as heads of state in: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mali. Senegal, Turkey and Indonesia.
“Women, a warning. Leave not your homes without good reason. You may go out to get food or to seek education. In Islam, it is a religious duty to seek knowledge Women may leave their homes freely for this” -Nana Asma’u Nana Asma’u (1793 – 1864) was born in Nigeria and spoke over seven languages. In 1830 she formed a group of female teachers who traveled throughout Nigeria educating women. The misconception is that the religion of Islam oppresses women. The reality is Muslim women are given rights through Islam. However, men have abused those rights by not allowing women to learn. Prophet Muhammad came as a restorer of Islam and that included placing Muslim women back

Female Sterilization in India
In India there is the issue of overpopulation, there are approximately 1.2 billion people in India; with an average of 18 million new births annually. Sterilization is given as a option for women in India instead of the government investing in educating families about birth control measures. Statistics provided by the United Nations show 49% of married couples in India practice birth control; three-quarters of those couples opted to have the wife sterilized. Several family planning agencies in India are expected to perform a certain number of sterilization by the government; in order to receive incentives.
“As female education rises, fertility, population growth, and infant and child mortality fall and family health improves.” -Population Reference Bureau
Pratibha Devisingh Patil was the 12th President and first female President of India. Patil ruled in that seat from 2007 until she resigned from office in 2012.
India has several women only colleges. However, there is still a disproportion of males being educated in comparison to females. In India females who reside in the urban or metropolitan area have more of a chance of attending school; in comparison to females in the outskirts or poor areas of the country. There is also the fact that poverty and the chaste system are prevalent in India. Those families with prestige and wealth are able to afford to educate their girls. Whereas the less fortunate may have to sell their girl child to a prominent family as a servant.
“In Hindu societies, especially overprotected patriarchal families like mine, daughters are not at all desirable. They are trouble. Human Trafficking in the U.S. Human trafficking is a worldwide $32 billion dollar per year industry, with women and girls being 80% of those trafficked. In the United States of America where girls have access to a public education just as boys do. Human trafficking is an issue which goes ignored and is not given much needed attention. It is estimated that there are 100,000 to 300,000 underage girls being sold for sex in America. The average age for girls used for prostitution is 12 -14 years of age. Child porn is a $3 billion dollar industry and 55% of internet child porn originates from the United States.
“We can’t lead worldwide unless we clean up our own house first,” -Cindy McCain
According to data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, human trafficking is the third-largest international crime industry. Cindy McCain, wife of Sen. John McCain R-Arizona and longtime advocate for the victims of human trafficking is a co-chair of the Arizona governor’s Task Force on Human Trafficking. February of this year she testified before Congress, that during the Super Bowl there were advertisements on websites in the Greater New York region which included women and girls forced into sex trafficking. Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, and Heidi Heitkamp, D-North Dakota worked together on a bill which offers employment assistance through Job Corps to victims as well as other resources, including medical and psychological treatment. There are presently other bills on the floor including not charging persons arrested for a sex crime due to sex trafficking as criminals, but instead as victims. Human trafficking and sex trafficking are serious and dehumanizing. If you need assistance with this matter call the US National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 1-888-373-7888. All calls and help are confidential and available 24/7. Women represent the backbone of society and family. If you visit a family the eldest woman in the family is usually the center that keeps the family together and strong. When you have a society where the majority of women are uneducated or voiceless; because they are female and taught to be inferior. Then future generations will continue to be unbalanced; as those future mothers will teach their children the same viewpoint. Continuing the cycle of oppression. It is up to women to lead by example and inspire our young girls to aim high, and encourage our boys to fight for change and equality. 23

A deeply moving story by a survivor of the commercial sex industry who has devoted her career to activism and helping other young girls escape “the life” “Powerfully raw, deeply moving, and utterly authentic. Rachel Lloyd has turned a personal atrocity into triumph and is nothing less than a true hero. . . . Never again will you look at young girls on the street as one of ‘those’ women—you will only see little girls that are girls just like us.” —Demi Moore, actress and activist
With the power and verity of First They Killed My Father and A Long Way Gone, Rachel Lloyd’s riveting survivor story is the true tale of her hard-won escape from the commercial sex industry and her bold founding of GEMS, New York City’s Girls Education and Mentoring Service, to help countless other young girls escape "the life." Lloyd’s unflinchingly honest memoir is a powerful and unforgettable story of inhuman abuse, enduring hope, and the promise of redemption.
8 Ways To Eat Healthy On A Budget Written by Carly Fraser
I am often asked how individuals and their families can eat healthy when they have to stick to a monthly budget – when a container of organic lettuce costs 3 times as much as an easy pop-me-in-the-microwave dinner, it is often much more convenient (and cheaper) to go for the latter than the former. However, once you begin to realize how much you might be spending on food items outside of the foods you buy at a grocery store (say, a lunch bought at work, or going out to eat a couple times a week for dinner) you start to realize that you could be saving pocketfuls of cash. When I switched my diet, I actually managed to save money because I stopped eating out, I gave up alcohol, I don’t smoke cigarettes, and I live a simplistic life with minimal materialistic possessions. Even choosing organic foods didn’t budge the bills – I came to realize that much of the organic produce was similarly priced as the non-organic produce, and that shopping around was my best bet to getting good deals.
Here are some tips and tricks so that you can work toward consuming a healthy, high raw and organic lifestyle on a budget!
1. Farmer’s Markets Farmer’s markets are one of the best ways to get the most for your money. The produce is fresh, local, and instead of supporting corporate giants, you are supporting individuals in your community which leaves a sense of fulfillment and gratitude. If you are concerned about pesticides and herbicides, you can often find vendors which are certified organic, or, you can simply ask the farmers if they spray their farms. You can make the decision as to whether you trust their sincerity, I often take their word (and individuals who cannot afford certified organic labelling, but do not spray, usually have cheaper produce too!). 25 The REMEDY remedymag.com
2. Eat at Home Preparing food and eating at home is one of the most important lifestyle changes to help save money. Eating out is expensive, no matter what way you look at it. I can stay at home and make the most delicious, satiating, massive salad for under $7, OR, I could go out and get a bland, boring salad which is 1/8th of the size of the ones I make at home for $10. It only makes sense not to eat out when you can.
3. Store Swapping
4. Bulk Buying
Shopping between stores for the best deal is a must for helping save money. I often find that the same produce distributors at one store might be 2-3 dollars cheaper at another (which can save a lot of money, especially if you are buying per pound or kilogram). Getting to know stores and which are more pricey than others is also useful in ensuring your money isn’t spent ruthlessly.
Buying in bulk is an excellent way to save money, especially if you want to go in on it with a couple other friends or households nearby. You can also ask your local health food store if they sell items in bulk, and if so, if you can get a discount (for example, an organic grocer in my city gives a 10% discount on items when you buy in bulk).
For example, I often shop between a few different stores in my area. There is Organic Planet, Organza, Vita Health, Superstore, Safeway, Mondragon, and of course farmer’s markets in summer. The prices between these places vary, and so I shop between them weekly to find the best deal on organic produce.
Going to your local health food store and buying your nuts, seeds, legumes, dried fruit or grains (if you consume grains) from bulk bins is a sure way to save money on the same product that might be in a fancy package but priced at double the cost.
5. On Sale Produce A lot of stores have discounted produce shelves where they put produce out that can no longer be sold because they are not in perfect condition. Usually this means that all of the ripe, ready to eat fruit will be in these discounted sections, which is great because that is the condition we should be eating our fruit in – RIPE! Wholesalers are also a great way to save money on produce, although finding organic wholesalers is a little more difficult (especially where I live). Whenever I buy produce, if I find some fruit or vegetable that looks a little bruised or battered up, I will ask the produce people or someone up front if I can get it for a discount price. More often than not, their answer is yes, and I end up getting a 50% discount on my produce!
6. Sprouting Sprouting is incredibly easy, and they are packed with a variety of nutrients. Eating nutrient rich foods help satiate the hunger signals in your brain, and also help mineralize your body (meaning that you don’t need to eat as much food and thus save money). If you are fond of sprouts but can’t afford them, sprouting is also an excellent way to save money. Buying bulk sprouting seeds and sprouting them in an old jar with a sprouting lid (or even a rubber band and some clean pantyhose) is inexpensive and one of the best ways for introducing organic micro-greens into your diet. My favourites to sprout are sunflower seeds and broccoli seeds (all organic of course!).

7. Eat Seasonally Seasonal eating is another great money saver. Seasonal produce is much cheaper, because it is much more abundant and readily-available (opposed to something being grown under less-than-optimal conditions during a time when nature did not intend for it to be grown). Eating seasonally is also much healthier too! In-season produce is more nutrient dense, and also more flavourful. This also works out well for people who do not want to eat vegetables or fruit, because in-season produce that tastes better will be eaten more often.
8. Ditch Supplements If you are consuming vitamin and mineral rich fruit and vegetables, supplements are not really necessary. Protein powders and daily vitamins are taken to supplement an already deficient diet. If you are eating healthy, and consuming adequate quantities of fresh, organic, mostly local produce then your body doesn’t need supplementation. The same goes for superfood blends which can be bought for so much cheaper in bulk at health food stores, separately, and mixed yourself. Supplements are a $25-billion-a-year industry, because so many people think they need supplements to have a balanced body chemistry. Nutritionists and medical professionals argue that supplements are necessary because most people don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables and rely more on processed foods which lack essential nutrients. When I went raw vegan I removed all supplements from my diet and my blood work still comes out great every year (and I have been raw for 3.5 years!). Source: Carly Fraser of http://livelovefruit.com

Mr. Anderson of IGROWUGROW.COM Written by TK EL
Mr. Anderson is a promoter of growth, in the arena of gardening. He likes to empower people to grow their own produce and eat what they grow. Mr. Anderson began gardening a little over a decade ago. However, his father and grandfather were gardeners, so the essence of gardening is in his DNA. His first garden was in a subdivision style garden. His garden grew compliments and attention. That led to an abundance of inquiries and questions about gardening from individuals in the community. He then saw the need to provide growers in urban settings with knowledge on how to grow their own produce. Though gardening is not easy, it did come easy to him. He took the philosophy that “If I can grow, you can grow” and that gave birth to his business name “I Grow U Grow”. Gardening and teaching others gardening is a passion for Mr. Anderson. Though he does offer his talent, skill and experience as a business it is more of a dharma for him.
Why the Mr.?
“Plant seeds and promote growth”
-Mr. Anderson
In the movie “The Matrix”, the character Neo turned out to be an anonymity of someone highly sought after, because he was able to come out of the matrix; then go back in and bring others out. He was able to dwell in the matrix as he saw fit. Neo’s matrix name was Thomas Anderson, or as he was called by one of the agents; Mr. Anderson. Being able to associate my gift with the character was not enough; we also share the same last name. I have the ability to use a garden as a vehicle to take people to other places and paradigms, including taking them out of their predicament. 29

Nature’s Pesticide There are some insects and creatures such as: lizards, spiders, snakes, and toads which are all beneficial to gardens. Though many people fear snakes, they assist in gardening. Snakes come to the garden to eat, they assist by taking away larva and worms which may eat on plants. Toads are also beneficial to the garden, they eat insects which can overtake the garden. When gardening you can attract insects or other creatures to assist in maintaining the garden.
Black Gold Compost is a form of decomposition, which consists of nitrogen and carbon mixed with 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen (water). Turned over at a rate it formulates a soil, known as compost. It creates a form of fertilization which is equivalent to gold for a gardener. Once the decomposition happens it brings on a nutrition and fertilization. Composting takes time, patience and effort. It is alchemy and science; taking a lesser substance and processing it into a greater substance. For instance taking lead and turning it into gold. When composting; kitchen scraps, newspaper, cardboard and etc are lesser items turned into a higher substance...that is Black Gold.
“Plant seeds, water the seeds, watch the garden grow. -Mr. Anderson Urban Youth Gardening Children are constantly programmed. They are programmed through media, television, commercials, advertisements, sugar and other vices of the matrix. The only way to counteract a negative program is to interject a positive program. I can speak to men 40 years older then me and they find it not common for an individual to have a vegetable garden. However, in this day and time, while it is becoming trendy, it is not common. To balance a negative you give a positive. So Mr. Anderson began an urban youth gardening program. The program is to teach children the benefit of growing food and how to grow food.
What Are 3 of the easiest plant based foods to grow indoors? All lettuces and herbs, leafy vegetables grow good indoors, under a fluorescent light or other proper lighting. However, sprouting nuts, seeds and grains is an excellent way to get an excellent source of nutrition; and is most recommended for growing indoors. Be mindful that growing produce indoors will not produce a vast amount of produce and the plants need to be placed in a very sunny area of the home. Summer 2014

On site garden coaching is available in Atlanta, GA. The focus of coaching is to show the person how to grow a garden with the goal of them being able to do it themselves. However, gardening services are provided. The fee is $35 for the first hour of consultation. If an individual is not in Atlanta coaching is available via telephone. Thanks to technology I have the ability to zoom in via Google Earth and I have an app on my iphone which I can use to view my clients garden and see how they are maintaining it. The fee for distance coaching is $20 hourly.
What is your remedy to balance the level of hunger and starvation in this world?
My remedy is to provide one grain of rice to tip the scale. By offsetting the youth garden program I am empowering people to grow their own food. Because if a person grows a garden and they eventually are able to grow an abundance of produce; they can then take it to the community. But one must first have enough for themselves. Because a man who caught a fish, will be more generous with the next fish he catches. A man with a pot of gold will share the next pot of gold he has; if he is not greedy. The same goes for a gardener. When one has enough produce for themselves; then they will be apt to share produce with others. If you’re hungry and trying to provide for yourself, you are not thinking on another mans hunger or world hunger. To contact mr. WATERMELON #1 Source of Lyopene ‘Who’s Laughing Now?!?” Written by TK EL Watermelon is at the top of the list of Lypone producing fresh produce, it produces 15-20 mg per 2 cup serving. Lycopene is a bright red pigment found in the body as well as fruits and vegetables with the same hue (tomatoes, watermelons, papaya’s and etc.). Within the human body this pigment is found in the blood (serum), liver, lungs, adrenal glands, prostate, colon and skin. According to the Mayo Clinic research suggests eating foods rich in lycopene may reduce cancer risks.
History of Watermelon
Watermelon is a superfood which originated from the southern region of Africa, however watermelon had a presence in Egypt dating back over 5,000 years. It is said watermelon is depicted in Eyptian hieroglyphics on ancient walls and were placed in the burial tombs of the pharoahs to nourish them in the afterlife. Watermelon was introduced into the United States by slaves during the Middle Passage. However, considering that the Indigenous people of this planet were nomadic and traders by nature, the watermelon more likely was already present in the Americas before that time period.

Watermelon Production Today, China is the largest producer of watermelon; they reportedly produce 70 million tons annually. Watermelon was introduced to China in the 10th century and spread throughout Europe in the 13th century via the Moors. Beside China the largest crops of watermelon are grown in Turkey and Iran.
“Every part of the watermelon can be consumed and is powerful.” Who’s Laughing Now?!? Imagery is a powerful thing. Through imagery persons can be persuaded by another individual’s perception. The U.S. has a long history and foundation built on racism. Watermelon has been attached to African Americans as a stereotypical food which was eaten by slaves. While eating watermelon is not a negative thing; the imagery used portrayed African Americans as what was termed “coons”. This depiction was a dark faced image with ultra big red lips eating watermelon, and there usually was a caption that lessened the value of African Americans or made them appear to be lazy. Spin forward to present day racism in the U.S. and watermelon is still used as a sign of degradation. It was even used in imagery to degrade the president of the U.S. Barack Obama. So, since it has been confirmed that watermelon is a top “Superfood”. May we remember all of the African Americans who knew the value of watermelon and ate it regularly to rid their body of the toxins from the poor grade of food they were given to eat. Go ahead and eat watermelon with pride, your body will thank you and if you are an African American your ancestors will too.
