Within NE1 my work is focussed on our employer-led skills and careers project where we have supported Virgin Money and 15 other employers to deliver a fantastic day for 11-13 year olds all about science, technology, engineering and maths. We have also worked with the Bank of England agency for the North East to roll out some of their education materials to schools across Tyne and Wear from PWC’s flagship offices in Newcastle. So being embroiled in this very important agenda means the fun stuff about our vibrant city can often pass me by. However, not this month - which is why I get to write the column! I’m going to catch the final show of Northern Stage’s The Department of Distractions which I’m really looking forward to. I’m doing Cancer Research’s ‘sugar-free February’ campaign, so for pre-theatre eats I was delighted to hear about the arrival of Aurora Kitchen - great for all those continuing their New Year pledges of healthy eating! Half Term is nearly upon us, and having two kids I have a full itinerary planned. First stop always is to see the extended Dino Jaws Exhibition at the Life Science Centre. The Discovery Museum have a whole plethora of activities around science, tech and innovation then we’ll be off to try Mr Mulligan’s Space Golf – opening timely for Half Term… it’s going to be chaos! Word on the Street THOMAS COOK AIRLINES QUAYSIDE SEASIDE
The Quayside Seaside will be delivered by NE1 for the seventh year running, and it’s hard to remember a summer without our city beach. We might have only just got over the January blues, but it’s time to get your flip flops and beach towels ready… because the Thomas Cook Airlines Quayside Seaside is back this March! Our favourite spot to soak up the sunshine in the city will be back in situ on the Quayside from 16th March for another spring and summer season to remember in NE1! You’ll find sand, deck chairs, palm trees and everything you’d expect to see at the seaside - but on the wonderful banks of the Tyne! Keep your eyes peeled for some exciting additions this year For more info on our beachy paradise, visit: getintonewcastle.co.uk
BOAT RACE OF THE NORTH
We’re very excited to announce that the Boat Race of the North will return to the NewcastleGateshead Quayside for another year! Students from Newcastle University rowing team will go head to head against Durham University in a Quayside race on 17th March 2018. The annual event was relaunched by team NE1 in 2015, bringing two giants of university rowing together to compete - racing through the heart of Newcastle, to be crowned Champions of the North! The contest is a 1,500 metre race from Redheugh to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, with hundreds of spectators lining the banks of the Tyne. There will be four teams from each university involved in this annual sporting event - with local boat clubs from Newcastle and Durham invited to join in the fun too. Round up your pals and don’t miss out on the biggest boat race in NE1! There will be a mini fan zone on the Thomas Cook Airlines Quayside Seaside where Newcastle University will be hosting sporting activities and a tasty BBQ! For more info and updates, visit: newcastlene1ltd.com
THE GEORDIE JACKPOT CASH FOR KIDS CALL
The Geordie Jackpot is Newcastle's very own lottery. It has been pumping funds into city centre projects and contributing to children's charity, Cash for Kids, since its launch. Now, thanks to YOUR support, Geordie Jackpot and Cash for Kids are able to offer grants of £1,500 to two Newcastle groups. Grants will be awarded to groups helping children improve their situation or groups that require funding for specialist equipment and experiences. We'd like to thank the lottery players of NE1 for participating! By buying a ticket, you are part of something special - something that will directly impact our city and its people. Do you know of a group or charity that would benefit from this Geordie Jackpot funding? Visit the website and complete the form by 23rd February! geordiejackpot.co.uk

BLUE LIGHT CHOIR
1,000 FACES
Introducing you to the 2018 Cash for Kids campaign… 1,000 Faces! The charity is looking to recruit 1,000 individuals, schools and businesses to help raise £100 for the charity during the course of the year. If 1,000 Faces sign up, the charity will raise a whopping £100,000 to help local children in the North East! Participants can do anything to raise the £100 – from cake sales and sponsored walks to giving something up for 100 days. metroradio.co.uk/faces
TEAM NE1 WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE BLUE LIGHT CHOIR OVER CHRISTMAS, helping to spread festive cheer across the city. Now that the dust has settled and the Christmas chaos has quickened down, we found some time to catch up with choir member Stu Hagon. When he’s not singing his heart out as a choir hero, he’s a Crew Manager at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service - a real life hero!
Quirky choir fact? The choir ranges in age from 21 to 65. Also, our choir leader is a hard task master, so we have to feed her before every rehearsal as she gets angry when she hasn’t eaten! What you love most about Newcastle? How friendly the city is. I think sometimes we take it for granted how friendly people of the North East can be.
STEMtastic
NE1 Can were thrilled to be involved in the very exciting STEMtastic event at Virgin Money – bringing together 15 inspiring businesses and 200 eager young people from 10 schools. This unique event was a first in the city, introducing experts in the science, technology, maths and engineering sector to the students of today and workplaces of tomorrow. Aimed at 11-13 year olds, STEMtastic focused on introducing science, technology and engineering, which are rapidly expanding sectors in Newcastle. newcastlene1ltd.com

VALENTINE’S DAY AT NEWCASTLE CASTLE
PASTY PASSION
Nothing says I love you more than a Greggs pasty in NE1. And our favourite steak bake spot is reminding us why we love it so much, with a romantic Valentine’s dinner. If overindulging in a pricey Valentine’s menu doesn’t tickle your fancy, and a pasty goes down a treat with your significant other, then look no further! The Grainger Street store will be serving a four-course dinner with glass of prosecco each. The menu includes canapé nibbles, signature Greggs puff pastry parcels and a brochette of miniature doughnuts to sweeten the deal (if it’s not already sweet enough)! This is not a drill - don’t miss out on this unique, fine dining Greggs experience! greggs.co.uk
Newcastle Castle is one of the most romantic spots in the city - and it’s the perfect place to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year! Grab your loved one, take in a screening of Shakespeare in Love, tuck into some food and drinks and spend your evening in the beautiful surroundings of our amazing city. What’s more? You’ll also be able to cosy up on a late night, candlelit tour of the Castle Keep itself, finishing with some of the finest views of NE1 and beyond - from the roof of the Castle. newcastlecastle.co.uk

CLUB Lizzy plays the role of Hedda in Hedda Gabler at the Theatre Royal from 13th - 17th February 2018. First time in the Toon? I have toured in Newcastle twice before with plays - I was in Twelfth Night at the theatre. I really love being in this city. This time I am staying with a Geordie friend of mine, Trevor Fox. He has a really nice house in Jesmond so I am looking forward to spending some time as a local. Have you brought your coat? We have been in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh so we really have experienced the coldest places. I'm hoping that the weather might just start to brighten up when we’re in Newcastle. Best Tyneside moment? Last time I was here I did a lot of running. The city itself is a really gorgeous city to run in. This time round with me staying with a local I am hoping to experience more. My boyfriend is coming to visit as it is our anniversary on the 18th, so we will be out and about in Newcastle celebrating. He's a surfer so we will be checking out Tynemouth too. Favourite Geordie? I would have to say Trevor Fox,
I don't think he would forgive me if I said anyone else! He's a great actor that I worked closely with at The Globe a few years ago, we toured China and Russia so we became really great friends! He has that great Geordie humour! NE1 plans? I am excited to check out some of Newcastle's vintage shops and have a little shop around the city. Unfortunately there’ll be no late nights as I have to be sensible with the busy show schedule! What would you be doing if you weren’t here now? I went to Sri Lanka for New Year but
came back to restart the job again. My boyfriend stayed in Sri Lanka, so maybe I would still be over there if I could allow myself a nice five week holiday! If I was at home in London I would be getting a puppy! I am getting a rescue puppy from the charity Wild At Heart in March! Valentine’s Day plans? It is our anniversary on 18th February so we are already making that weekend a nice activity weekend. Hedda Gabler is a very anti-Valentines Day show though, so on Valentine's Day itself I'll probably be putting everyone else off romance! theatreroyal.co.uk

THE YEAR OF THE DOG!
WE’RE KICKING OFF THE CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVITIES THIS YEAR IN NE1 WITH A VIBRANT PARADE STARTING FROM OLD ELDON SQUARE AND MAKING ITS WAY THROUGH CHINATOWN, FINISHING ON STOWELL STREET.
One of the most colourful events of the year is back! The people of NE1 can expect dragon and unicorn dances, a traditional Chinese lion parade, flag wavers, themed floats and inspiring drumming as the city comes alive to celebrate the Year of the Dog. This year, Newcastle’s Chinese Arch, which marks the start of Chinatown and takes pride
of place at the entrance to Stowell Street has undergone a fantastic makeover, thanks to a creative collaboration between the Chinese community and NE1. The memorial arch, which in Mandarin is called Pai Fang, has restored its commemorative boards, listing the names of the members of the Chinese community who contributed to its construction. It’s an iconic part of our city, and the perfect place to celebrate the Chinese New Year festivities in Newcastle. The Chinese New Year celebrations have

been extended in the city this year, thanks to a crowd funding appeal backed by team NE1 and Newcastle City Council. Celebratory activities will kick off in intu Eldon Square on Friday 16th February with a colourful lion dance performance and free arts and crafts.

ating here means you don’t have to cut any of the major food groups out of your diet. It’s all about clean eating - eating fresh produce and guilt-free grub that puts the fun back into tucking into a juicy burger, slurping up some noodles and chomping on a hearty breakfast. The concept here is simple - fresh, good-forthe-soul fast food that takes the stress out of at-home lunch and dinner prepping. Make your NE1 lunch break a joy by switching off, removing yourself from your desk and popping in to see the lovely people who serve lush lunches at Canaca. If you want on-the-go breakfast, you can pick up smoked salmon and egg muffins, avocado and egg breakfast pots or chilli cheese and za’atar for that mid-morning kick. If you’re swinging by for lunch with work pals, you don’t have to select a specific cuisine and go with it, you can get a bit of everything here: from Harissa chicken wraps and Thai green curry to Korean style chicken wings and Turkish koftas. BEHIND THE SCENES
Meet the NE1 team we have on the city centre may end up with Newcastle United having some positive changes too… I can only dream I guess?
FOR ME, THE NE1 RE-ELECTION WOULD MEAN… that the businesses would be retaining an excellent service! If we were not here, the projects such as Alive After Five would be gone, NE1 IS HOME FOR ME… I was born and bred which would be very detrimental as there would a Geordie lad! be no FREE parking in the city centre plus the shops would end up closing earlier. Our cleaning MY ROLE AT NE1 HQ IS TO… manage the services are a massive benefit to businesses. If a everyday running of the street team ensuring they business had vomit in their doorway, my team deliver not only the NE1 projects, but also help would be there within 15 minutes to clean it keep Newcastle a clean, safe environment for all away - saving the staff from doing it themselves. who work and visit the city! ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES I GREW UP IN NEWCASTLE AND HAVE SEEN ON THE JOB FOR ME WAS… we were riding SOME GOOD CHANGES… but I have also seen two trikes with huge wooden boxes on the front. some bad changes. In my role, I get to have a I was still finding my way around town, so I say on what good changes we can make to the wasn’t clued up on all the streets. I decided to city. I always have hope that the positive changes take a ‘short cut’ along Railway Street, but I did
not expect the street lead to Forth Banks! Anyone who knows Newcastle knows Forth Banks is one of the steepest hills in the city. I thought I was going to achieve flight like E.T! I don’t know how I managed to stop the trike, but I honestly thought I was going to end up in the Tyne!
MY DAY STARTS OFF BY… giving my street team any updates and instructions for the day. I then have meetings throughout the day - solving problems for businesses. Most recently, I am dealing with bins around the city and how I can reduce the amount of business bins on the streets or store them in a more discreet location so it makes the city look more presentable. On top of solving business issues, I have a duty of care to my team so I look after their training, equipment and making sure they deliver an excellent service. THE BEST BITS ARE… when you solve an issue for a business or managing the NE1 events and seeing the positive impact they have on the city
WHEN I’M NOT DOING MY NE1 THING I AM… attending to the little one. I have a little girl, so most of my time is taken up looking after her. I am a musician and have played in bands all over the UK, I follow the Toon, even though watching the matches makes my hair turn grey, and I am also a lover of owls (hence the photograph). They're amazing creatures - so mysterious yet so elegant. IF I WON THE GEORDIE JACKPOT… I’d be straight off to Vegas! Then I’d come back to reality and put some money away for the little one and sort out my finances! A QUICK MESSAGE FOR THE PEOPLE OF NE1… Keep supporting Newcastle as a city and do your part in making a positive change. The little things matter such as putting litter and chewing gum in the bins. Together we can make Newcastle even greater…
