REMIXING
reMIX is a young office based in Beijing, born from the experience that the three founding partners (Chen Chen, Federico Ruberto and Nicola Saladino) have developed during years of academic research and collaborations with various international firms, working on multiple design scales. Our expertise ranges from architecture to landscape and urban design. We move on multiple grounds, analyzing and re-describing their performative logics. The understanding of the territory and its constitutive and constantly evolving metabolic networks and systems of power relations allows us to re-define natural/ artificial and local/global dichotomies, envisioning future social assemblages. In order to achieve a systematic control on the energetic functionality and the spatial quality of the built environment we aim for the local integration of architecture and landscape into a synthetic and modern urban hybrid. reMIX and its architecture and landscape design projects have been recognized by a number of important international design awards, including ASLA Honour Award (2011,2013), IFLA Design Award Third Place (2011), XI Krakow Architecutre Triennial Prize, and Qianhai Island Masterplan International Competition Third Place (2014). reMIX has been featured widely by the press around the world, including Landscape Architecture Frontiers, ASLA LAM, Community Design, Urban Flux, Complexity and Sustainability, Frama, Future Magazine, Vision, GSD Platform, Homestyle, and a series of web-magazine including Dezeen, Designboom, Phaidon and Gooood. Various design projects of reMIX have been invited to be exhibited worldwide, including the 14th Venice Architectural Biennale, Rotterdam Architecture Biennale 2012, Festival des Architectures Vives 2013, Manchester Center for Chinese Contemporary Art 2014, and Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2011.

Every year the Festival des Architectures Vives organizes the construction of several installations in the courtyards of historical buildings that are opened for the occasion to the public. The 2013 festival focused on the theme of “memory” and our design aimed to produce a space inspired by miniature oriental gardens that could interact with the personal and collective memories of the visitors. An array of aluminum beams created an artificial landscape that echoes the typical lavender fields of South France. The tectonic details were designed to avoid the use of any welding so that the installation could be assembled or disassembled within 3 hours. Hundreds of aluminum trees were cut out from the beams to lighten the structure and were etched with the seven main emotions of Chinese philosophy. People of all ages were invited to pick up a tree, write their memories or wishes on it and “plant” it back onto the landscape, following an index of historical dates on the base. The public understood the rules of the installation naturally and became the active element of the performance. Writing and planting became a ritual of liberation, where wishes could find their physical materialization in the plants and sadness could be absorbed by the ground, revealing a cathartic potential of our design. At the end of the week, all the 1200 trees were written and planted, saturating the whole landscape of memories.

This installation is the result of a workshop with students from Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts. It comes from the understanding of design not in an aprioristic manner but as a processual framework in which various logical operations and the performance of the different components characterize the aesthetic and emergent properties of the resulting space. We proposed a strategy in which the final shape was not given and predetermined from the beginning but was generated as a result of an “organic” construction process. The intervention is a tactic of punctual decisions: the design of few basic components, their location through connectors and their balancing logic once assembled together create a dynamic spatial organization that is open to further on-site alterations. The trees reach a stable condition only when the final weight is applied at the bottom. Thus the operation of linking different formations together modifies the system overall balance, altering and affecting the position of every other single branch.

Paizi 38 installation for the 2013 Beijing Design Week is essentially a preliminary act since the space is meant to become a new boutique hotel in the months to come. The hotel will be grafted into the existing building through precise insertions and punctual modifications; actions that informed our controlled demolition. The structural survey and the analysis of the existing spaces, organized in an extensive linear sequence – a quite unique feature for such building typology in this area of Beijing – were the premises of our temporary installation. An elevated wooden path, framed by twisting groups of elastic strings, guides the visitors along the derelict building to a pop-up restaurant, where the Beijing Design Week hosted the opening and closing dinner.Through the perforation of the existing walls and structures, we revealed the stratified history of the interior spaces and highlight the character of the future hotel. The system of new portals is a succession of points of view that, previewing the new hotel internal circulation, forces the visitors into an unexpected journey, challenging his imagination and forcing him to redefine the meaning of “exploration”.The string tunnel ends in a large double-height room and branches out in a three-line lighting feature, marking and defining visually the sitting areas of the temporary restaurant.

As a result of the difficult and time consuming negotiation with the neighbours, the implementation of the project was consistently delayed so the fully renovated residential unit that was supposed to be exhibited in the 2014 Beijing Design Week resulted in an empty skeleton awaiting construction. In such conditions we decided to virtually reconstruct the future configuration of the building through a light installation of wireframe volumes. The different levels and the staircases that spiral around the main double-height space are rendered through the use of white rubber bands that glow in the semi-darkness of the room, only lit up by hidden UV lights. In the background one can still see the textures of the existing walls, eroded by time and humidity, creating an interesting dialogue between the past and the future of the building.

2014 installation for Vision Magazine | 《青年视觉》杂志活动装置设计 1000 sqm | 1000 平米 CFC, World Financial Centre, Beijing | 中国,北京, 环球金融中心中森会餐厅
The space we designed, an alchemical laboratory, displays processes of gustative creation, mixing them as ephemeral forms for aesthetic expression, acts of sensorial consumption. Slicing, chopping, mixing, drying, heating, freezing, pasteurizing, fermenting, are the techniques of material meta-formation; proteins, carbohydrates, fats, fibers, vitamins, and minerals are the mutable elements contained in any of the displayed photographs, videos and experiments. They transmute contaminating the space, becoming the visual ingredients of the laboratory in an alchemy of effects, chemical additives, transformations; an aesthetics of mists and ungraspable projections. Cooking and designing hybridize in the tunnel through the transformation of matter in the very tradition of alchemy. They deal with the contingencies of the place in which they operate, both grabbing their peculiar localities and transforming the materials at their disposal. They are aesthetic and sensorial syntheses, performative economies subjected to the laws of matter; both are bound to decay and subjected to transformation, though, happening at very different paces... The spatial transformation and the material transmutation are intrinsically similar: they happen to share the changing ephemeral presence of the tunnel, which displays inter-breed culinary-design experimentations. The exhibition tunnel evolves from an aseptic spatiality into an alembic of labile, transient, fleeting, perishable and combustible affections. The space cannot be grasped formally in its entirety; it is not a shape but a shapeless experience, a sensual and sensorial act of exploration. It is a process of discovery where the axiomatic constriction of the architectural boundaries is unbridled, unleashed, undefined... an event of sensorial degustation; in sum, a haptic Vision...

Joy Cafe’ is located in a post-postmodern pseudo-European commercial block that hosts several restaurants and shops, serving the surrounding residential high-rise modern compound. In the context of such an ungraspable stylistic schizophrenia and cultural discrepancy, our building steps back, self-retreating through a gesture of tactical discreteness that avoids a naive and silly mimicry. Accessing the site, two features emerge sharply from the existing walls: two new glazed volumes suggest the presence of a new interiorized space, focusing the views from the inside towards an adjacent canal. Internally the program is spread among three floors: one large coffee area with private meeting rooms is located on the ground floor and an exhibition/special events space occupies the upper floors, where we took advantage of the generous height to create a mezzanine that overlooks the multifunctional double-height area. The existing structure is dissected and incised punctually in the only part where the slabs overlap creating moments of tension and dynamism at different heights. The organization of the rooms, the bar volumes, the ceiling and its lighting features are organically mediated and geometrically organized by the self-standing staircase, the spatial apex that develops and spirals around the existing structure, creating moments of intense differentiation. This folded metallic band sews the main gestures into a coherent aesthetics and creates programmatic continuity.

Yangmeizhu 2 is one of the pilot projects developed in Dashilar for the 2013 Beijing Design Week. We created a small installation on the ground floor exhibiting our concept for the future renovation of the building. Our site consists of a series of disconnected volumes on multiple levels arranged around two little courtyards, shared by three different tenants. The project aims at solving the vertical communication between the two floors and the roof terrace as well as improving the critical illumination and ventilation of the ground level. The construction of a new staircase that works as a light-well creates a new core that organizes the whole internal program. At the same time, a series of small terraces and overhanging volumes extends the rooms outwards and enhances the visual connections with the communal spaces.

The new Orchid Hotel in Dashilar is the result of the renovation of a traditional courtyard house with certain historical value. The original layout presented a sequence of three courtyards surrounded by wooden-structure residential pavilions along a 60m long central axis. In recent years the site had been converted into a textile factory and the initial volumes were strongly altered. Our intervention starts from the recovery of the main pavilions, which were relatively well preserved, and the demolition of all the recent additions. A new volume along the street gives direct access to the site and hosts the general services and public functions of the hotel, while another block provides three extra bedrooms deeper in the plot and defines two gardens of similar size. The main building, organised on three floors, is “excavated” with the insertion of multiple skylights and a vertical garden that provide natural light and ventilation to the lower levels, while preserving the maximum privacy towards the neighbours. The original central axis has been removed and the main circulation has been relocated on the second floor along the West boundary of the plot, connecting the lobby with the two gardens and all the bedrooms. Such open-air elevated platform provides an unusual view over the roofs of the neighbourhood, providing the guests with a unique and surprising perspective of the hutongs.

This is a renovation project for the house of two screenwriters in Shunyi, Beijing. The original building, approximately 500 sqm divided in two floors and a basement, needed an extension to accommodate new programs including a double-height studio, a roof terrace and a kitchen garden. A series of mezzanines, balconies and roof terraces at various levels are linked by a continuous band of circulation made of internal stairs and external ramps, interweaving in and around a glazed volume. The original structure, composed of two static white boxes, is then transformed into a dynamic system of interconnected floating platforms overlooking each other. The traditional programmatic segregation is replaced by a more ambiguous spatial mix of activities: the new double-height volume allows individual and group activities such as reading, writing, debating, etc. to happen spontaneously at different levels. The garden is also reconfigured to become an integrated part of the scheme, interacting with the new massing to create a coherent spatial experience. The planting strategy responds to the need of privacy typical of dense housing developments: bamboo, ivy and high herbals introduce semi-transparent screens that filter the views. At the same time the vegetation is organized into various layers that maximize the perceived depth of the garden. Diverse native plant communities create a rich mix of textures, while requiring minimal maintenance.
