nless you recently won the lottery, you are probably examining your expenditures with an eye towards receiving value for your money. You have a right to expect some kind of return on your investment, whether it is assurance that your vehicle will run properly, that your insurance will pay when necessary or your meal arrives in a reasonable amount of time. Why spend hard earned bucks on an iffy proposition? I am proud to have recently assumed the presidency of this organization and I am comfortable knowing PMPV is one of those organizations that provides both tangible and intangible value to our members and the trades we represent. I have been a member for six years (working for a company with 30+ years in PHCC) and have grown in my appreciation for what PMPV offers and what the association does. I did not go willingly to my first meeting. I am not a joiner and I have plenty of ways to spend my free time. After that first experience – and in the dozens of meetings since – I now recognize the diversity of benefits the association delivers. Meetings bring me in contact with my peers and I learn about the trade, the environment in which we operate, techniques to be more successful, problems to avoid and ways to approach problems. I have made friends. I have made contacts. I have learned how to effect change and how to lead. Hopefully I pass these things along to others. In the process, I have taken advantage of tangible benefits: discounts on purchases, access to products and services, educational offerings and more. For all of this, I am better at my job. I might have gotten the same results taking a different route, but there was no guarantee. Those in the trade who want to reach the next level would do well to join the association. I assure you that the value is off the charts.

FROM THE

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

W

hile much of Virginia was shuddering through the polar vortex of 2014, hardy volunteers from PMPV were in Richmond delivering welcome gifts to new and returning legislators. Each delivery provided an opportunity to put a face to plumbing/heating/cooling tradesmen and issues in the state. Honestly, the exercise was enjoyable, even to those who declared a lack of passion for political activities. Each approached their assigned task with diligence: stuffing cards, filling bags, hauling boxes or hand delivering the gifts. After years of witnessing this opening week activity, many members of the General Assembly and their staff expressed sincere appreciation for the effort. Should a trade-related issue arise, they will remember that they have connections in the business. The end of the week was dedicated to the state PMPV board meeting and induction of new directors. Those who have served the organization candidly believe the time-consuming experience benefitted them in equal or greater measure. Such appreciation is not unique to PMPV‌boardsmanship and volunteering are rewards in themselves, but the challenge is in getting busy people to take the first step toward involvement. In a 2013 survey conducted by the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management, 34% of respondents expressed belief in the organization’s mission, but cited as a reason for becoming a board member that someone from the organization asked them to participate, they were interested in working with another board member or they joined to advance their professional career. What was your reason for joining a board on which you serve? Or are you still waiting to be asked? For nearly 100 years PMPV has been dedicated to its mission. Now is the time we need your involvement. If you wonder about volunteer opportunities with PMPV, simply send an e-mail to info@PMPV.org. This time next year you will be glad you did. Susan L. Milhoan, MBA, CAE, PMP Executive Director

Book Review by Susan L. Milhoan, Executive Director You may own a vehicle (or a fleet of vehicles), but until you educate yourself about the basics of automotive mechanics, you risk spending unnecessary time and money. You don’t have to perform all the maintenance and repairs yourself, but knowing what needs to be done (and doesn’t) is just a smart move. NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace has collected all the basics in an easy-to-read book entitled Kenny’s Garage. It’s not the kind of publication recommended for beach reading (although it is amusing), but invaluable as a glove box reference. Written simply and in a direct style, Wallace makes the topic enjoyable, from fluid changes (“Learning to change your oil for the first time is as easy as baiting a hook or making Macaroni and Cheese from a box.”) to safe driving tips (“It’s all fun and games until you’re upside down in a cornfield watching the snow trickle down on your totaled vehicle.”). He also includes a section of

helpful hints collected through years of involvement with automobiles, such as using dry ice or a toilet plunger to make minor repairs. Those with years of experience owning vehicles may not need Kenny’s Garage, but it’s a fun addition to the bookshelf. It would also make a great gift for those teenagers about to start driving who think they know everything. Reading it may increase your understanding of automobiles, but the application is up to you. Even Wallace admits to making some questionable modifications: “Us Wallaces always try to abide by the rules. We had a taillight that got smashed somehow in a vehicle we used to drive when I was about 10 years old. I remember Rusty taking a flashlight, turning it on and putting a red shop towel around it, which made the light red, and then we taped it in the broken out area. This is what we did. We had no money. We were under middle class. It started out that this

was going to be a very temporary fix, but as time went on and as it got dark outside, it was just too easy to turn on that flashlight wrapped in a red shop towel.” Kenny’s Garage is available for $9.95 for Paperback and $5.99 for eBook from Amazon or at the April 10 PMPV Trade Show.

It’s Your Brand…Don’t Blow It In this graphically rich book, Dan Antonelli provides straight talk for small business owners as he sheds light on your company’s biggest asset: your brand - and logo design. Using a great many plumbing and HVAC contractors as examples, the book may help you learn industry secrets for selecting and working with a reputable design team, creating a logo design that stands out, promoting your brand promise, and building a small business brand that outshines competitors. And, if you’ve enjoyed business success in spite of a mediocre logo design, this book encourages you to rethink the power of professional branding and its impact on your bottom line. Antonelli is the creative director of an advertising agency focused exclusively on working with small 10

IMAGE | PMPV.ORG | Spring 2014

businesses. In this book, he shares his experience in helping over 750 other small businesses build brands, and how branding and effective logo design has been crucial to their success. By explaining how the logo design is central to all small business brands, the book graphic illustrates with case studies how a successful brand can be constructed. While most books on branding deal with large corporations and how their brands were built, this book is focused on small business branding. With over a hundred sample designs, and case studies for several different types of businesses, the book clearly illustrates practical small business branding. From service businesses, such as contractors, to professional firms and everything in between, the book offers real-world

examples of how a small business can build a brand. Building a BIG Small Business Brand is available for $29.95 in oversized paperback from Amazon.

REPORT

CEU’S & 2014 GA SESSION

P

MPV/VAPHCC has been VERY busy in late 2013 and early 2014.

In case you had not heard, our CEU is live! With the help of several other organizations, many folks testifying at all 5 hearings and participation at the DPOR board for Contractors meetings in December, the Board voted to retain the CEUs. We are in the process of making an offer to that Board to have a working committee of industry people to help make the CEU program a better one, one that helps the journeyman become a better tradesman, one that is not financially difficult for the tradesmen, one that is not a burden on the board to administer and one that truly protects the consumers of Virginia. WHEW! No small task! If you have ideas, please pass them on to me as the first meeting of interested parties is soon. The General Assembly Session for 2014 opened on January 8th and we had many representatives of PMPV/VAPHCC visiting the “Hill” on the 9th, knocking on doors and doling out our annual “goody bags”. We had many great conversations with legislators that day.

Lorrie Gore, Gundlach Plumbing, Del. Hyland “Buddy” Fowler, Laurie Crigler, L+D Associates, Inc.

We managed to convince Delegate Loupassi that his House Bill 297 was not a good bill. The bill allowed “unlicensed contractors, who did not know they had to be licensed, to have access to the Mechanic’s Lien laws” so as to be able to recuperate uncollectable funds. This was laid on the table immediately as there were several industries that convinced him this was not a good bill.

We are still working, as of this writing, with Delegate Cole to add amendments to his bill that allows municipalities/authorities to get into the “service contract business”. This smacks of the utility deregulation issues we fought in the late 1990’s which caused (via the SCC) Dominion Power to set up a completely separate corporation (Dominion Services) to be able to write and operate service contracts using their customer base information. By setting up a separate corporation, this cleared up any use of rate-payer funds issues and cross-subsidization issues. This bill that Delegate Cole has submitted (HB227E) does exactly the same thing for municipalities/authorities, so we have offered several amendments to help him satisfy his requirements, satisfy our industry and still protect the consumers. I will keep you posted! Other than that, just trying to stay warm…thank goodness for our wonderful heating contractors…they really provide a GREAT service to our state. Remember to join PMPV/VAPHCC, a professional organization which looks out for the public AND the industry and be part of the solution! Laurie C. Crigler, Legislative Chair, PMPV 540-948-6230 (Office) | 540-718-3000 (Cell) | lcc@ldassociatesinc.com

Modern Mechanical Named As Finalist For Small Business Of The Year; Company President Shawn Mitchell Awarded Entrepreneur of The Year

odern Mechanical, an Ashburn, Virginia-based mechanical contracting firm and PMPV member, was named as a finalist to receive The Small Business of the Year Award for 2013 by the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Modern Mechanical President, Shawn Mitchell was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year for 2013. The Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce recognized all of the winners at the Small Business Awards gala on November 8, 2013 at the National Conference Center in Landsdowne.

“It is such an honor to be a finalist for Small Business of The Year in Loudoun County,” said Pete Danielson, Co-Owner and COO of Modern Mechanical. “It’s our mission to be a customer focused company that is very active in the community. The company’s motto is ‘Service Professionals for Today’s Consumer’ and this is more than a slogan—it’s the genuine way we do business every day. Today, consumers have so many choices and so much information available to them 24 hours a day. It’s absolutely critical that we continue to innovate in the areas of heating and cooling solutions and that we make it easier for the customer to do business with Modern

Mechanical, such as through our online appointment scheduling.” “I am proud to say that the competition for the 2013 Entrepreneur of the Year Award is perhaps the fiercest I have seen in the eight years that I have been associated with the Loudoun County Small Business Awards,” added Tony Howard, president and CEO of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce. “Each of these business owners exemplifies what it means to be a successful entrepreneur: smart, focused, hard-working and committed to the success of their business, their employees and their customers. Each has demonstrated their own personal commitment to serve our Loudoun community, through their selfless contributions to their fellow business owners and to the non-profit organizations they support.” In addition to being named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, Shawn Mitchell was also was named to Leesburg Today’s inaugural class of “40 Under 40” rising business and community leaders earlier this year. Modern Mechanical has continually separated itself from more than 500 market competitors through extensive networking and community involvement. Its employees are actively involved in the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, as well as its Young Professionals and Ambassadors committees, and two leadshare groups. The company has also donated more than $20,000 to local charities since 2010. One of Modern Mechanical’s biggest accomplishments has been creating and sponsoring the Red, White, and Blue Final Salute Fundraiser. The event raised more than $11,000 for Final Salute, Inc., an organization which helps homeless female veterans and their children find better living conditions. Modern Mechanical, LLC is a mechanical contracting firm founded by Shawn Mitchell in April of 2010. Headquartered in Ashburn, Virginia, the company has grown to 23 employees and services customers throughout Northern Virginia. Modern Mechanical specializes in residential and light commercial heating, air conditioning, solar, and plumbing services. The company was recently recognized as the Washington Business Journal #1 Small Business for Best Places to Work.

TESTIMONY

Joe Deehan General Manager, Ferguson Enterprises

As a board member, I am proud of the work PMPV has accomplished over the years. The organization has remained true to its mission to provide networking, information, education and training as well as tracking legislation and providing a forum for problem solving. Our membership has grown to include some of the finest plumbing and mechanical professionals in Virginia, from small companies to large contractors. Participation in PMPV offers every member: • Increased education in our field • Knowledge from fellow colleagues through mentoring • Networking with the ability to share contacts and receive referrals • Collaboration among all business groups Ferguson has been a key supporter of PMPV for many years. For me, the networking and collaboration are invaluable benefits and ultimately shapes the way I do business.

PMPV provides the perfect avenue to discuss key industry issues relevant to the Hampton Roads area with vendors, contractors and other industry partners. I’m able to take this information back to my team and ensure we stay abreast of developments in our industry. This allows Ferguson the ability to remain flexible to the needs of our customers and anticipate ways we can better serve them. I encourage you to take advantage of all the benefits PMPV has to offer, starting with the “Roadmap to Success” trade show taking place on April 10. The day-long event will feature 40 exhibitors, apprentice competition, a variety of training and educational sessions and entertainment. As well, I hope you reach out to fellow members, regularly attend the quarterly meetings, and learn ways you can make a meaningful impact to the plumbing and mechanical industry of Hampton Roads. With new national lead-free legislation, there’s been a lot of talk about making the switch. Here’s the truth: T&S was the first fixture, faucet and fitting manufacturer to convert its entire line to lead-free alloys back in 2010. So when you purchase a T&S faucet, the peace of mind that comes with lead-free compliance is built right in. No worries. No hassle. NASCAR fans all have their favorite drivers and drivers they love to hate. Kenny Wallace, youngest of three brothers born to Russ and Judy Wallace, is one driver who seems able to make everyone smile. Nicknamed “Herman” for a comic strip character “Herman the German,” Wallace is a gifted and accomplished driver and a very funny character. He began his racing career by working as a mechanic on his father’s race cars and brother’s team. He entered his first race in 1982, winning the event. This victory sparked Wallace’s driving career, and he has competed in more than 900 events in a diversity of conditions from oval tracks and road races to dirt tracks. In September of 2013 Kenny Wallace made his 900th career start in NASCAR, joining a small group of world class drivers in that historic moment at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois. Today Wallace is the co-host of two programs for SPEED TV each week; NASCAR RaceDay, which airs before the Sprint Cup race each week, and NASCAR Victory Lane, which extends post-race coverage. With Kenny’s competitive battles on the racetrack and popularity on television, he has become one of the most sought after drivers in NASCAR racing today for sponsor endorsements and speaking engagements. He is now also the author of Kenny’s Garage, a handbook of homespun wisdom and vehicle maintenance tips.

A concrete interceptor might seem like a ‘solid’ idea at the time. But not when ever-widening cracks in the concrete, and its inherent porosity, bring the potential for leakage of waste material into the surrounding area. With today’s tough environmental standards, what seemed like such a ‘concrete’ idea at the time won’t hold much water. Why take a chance on concrete, when there’s a better alternative made from steel? The new RGI Series from Rockford Separators outperforms concrete at every level. Better yet, it’s now available with Full Freight Allowed.*
