ou can trust a professional remodeling contractor with NARI certification to have access to the latest industry information via conventions, educational programs, meetings, trade publications and expos that feature up-to-the-minute products, materials and techniques. Only serious professionals with a real desire to excel in the industry are eligible to participate in NARI’s rigorous certification program, which teaches and tests skill sets, safety issues, and ethical business practices. When you see any of the certifications described on this page, you’ll know that the affiliated remodeling contractor or company has taken the time to meet performance and business criteria that surpass industry standards. CR (Certified Remodeler) Individuals with the CR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of the remodeling industry. They must have at least five years remodeling experience, participate in 16 hours of continuing education and be associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics. CRS (Certified Remodeler Specialist) This designation includes those remodelers who specialize in six specialty areas of the industry: concrete and masonry, electrical systems, insulation, mechanical systems, plumbing, and roofing and siding. They must have been in the remodeling business for at least five years and associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.

CRA (Certified Remodeler Associate) CRA designation will be available to and used by individuals associated with the remodeling industry, but not directly involved in any form of hands-on remodeling. This includes individuals employed as consultants, educators, manufacturers, publishers, suppliers, and writers for the remodeling industry.

GCP (Green Certified Professional) Individuals with the GCP designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of green remodeling, have been in the remodeling business for at least two years and be associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.

CKBR (Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler also includes ACSD and PKBP) Individuals with the CKBR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of kitchen and bathroom remodeling, have at least five years experience and are associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.

MCR (Master Certified Remodeler) This designation recognizes Certified Remodelers that have demonstrated commitment to the remodeling industry through support and involvement in their local chapter, NARI National, and/or their local community. Candidates must be a Certified Remodeler for a minimum of ten consecutive years, hold another NARI certification (CKBR, GCP, CLC, and UDCP) and must submit a letter of recommendation from their chapter executive or chapter president or three letters of recommendation from recent clients.

CLC (Certified Lead Carpenter) CLC designation is exclusively for lead carpenters who are skilled and knowledgeable in the technical, hands-on aspects of their work, and who have demonstrated skill and knowledge in project management, supervision, and customer service. Candidates must have worked in the remodeling industry full-time and continuously for at least five years, must comply with the NARI Code of Ethics and must have at least two years experience as a full time lead carpenter. CRPM (Certified Remodeling Project Manager) Certified Remodeling Project Managers (CRPMs) are the field personnel who oversee every aspect of the project: customer satisfaction, personnel management, project schedule, administration, etc. while working on the project or projects. Candidates must have two (2) years continuous experience in the remodeling industry, AND one (1) year as a remodeling project manager.

UDCP (Universal Design Certified Professional) Individuals with the UDCP designation are recognized as experienced professionals with skills and knowledge in all aspects of universal design and remodeling. With many options and products to choose from, here are some top decking trends and popular products in the decking world. Many homeowners consider their backyards and outdoor living areas on their property to be critical parts of their home. As such, they often spend as much time and money on outdoor living areas as they do on indoor rooms and additions. Large three-season porches, decks and covered patios are turning up on more new homes and remodeling projects. Depending on where you live, you probably like to spend time outdoors and enjoy the natural atmosphere, fresh air and nice weather. Specifically in the New York area people tend to make the most out of enjoyable weather. Not new to snowstorms and colder temperatures in the winter months, most natives really take advantage of the nice weather that comes in the summer, spring and fall seasons. With winter finally behind us, now may be the time to start thinking about adding a new deck to enjoy the springtime weather. Extending living space to the outdoors, integrating home and landscape, making use of damp or uneven terrain, and giving a contemporary look to a traditionally styled home are just a few of the ways that decks make life a little better. Now that the housing market is picking up over the past several years, deck manufacturers and suppliers are expanding the options that they are giving to their customers and consumers are taking advantage of their options. 14

As far as the decking business is concerned, all options are great and adding a deck to your home tends to add to the value of your house. According to suppliers, the decking business has gone through an interesting evolution over the years. In the past, what most people wanted was wood decks, with cedar being the most popular. The next trend was composite, which proved to be even more efficient with less maintenance. You don’t have to stain it, it won’t warp like wood, and in general it’s less maintenance. Here’s a riddle: what has the beauty of nature, the comforts of the indoors and utilizes previously unused square footage? Outdoor living spaces, of course. Homeowners are discovering the full functionality of their yards and making them as much of an asset to the home as the living room itself. Following are some popular ideas to bring the luxury of the indoors outside. FIRE ELEMENTS

Fireplaces and fire pits remain some of the most popular outdoor additions for their dynamic attractiveness and ability to regulate the temperature of an outdoor room, increasing the length of usability for the space. Douglas Dervin, president of Double D Contractors, Inc. in Hicksville, NY, reported that styles for these tend to still be custom masonry. Fire tables are also on the rise for popularity. “People are dining with fire because they have tables with a fire pit in the middle,” said Jessica DiBiasi, manager with North Fork Energy in Cutchogue, NY. “You can also put a lid over the fire pit portion when eating, then later lift the lid to use as a fire pit. It makes it convertible.” 18

Also, according to DiBiasi, a popular current trend in fire pits is to put glass beads at the bottom of fire pits to make the pit glow a certain color. DiBiasi also said that fire urns are now on the rise, which is a more stable option in the high wind. Urns can also be an easier, more attractive option with piped gas lines or gas lines under the ground. Joanne Bechoff, vice president with G.B. Construction & Development, Inc. in Manorville, NY, reported that gas fire elements are on the rise for their convenience factor. OUTDOOR ROOMS

Many homeowners are now ditching the vague patio space in favor of specifically defined “rooms” outdoors. Specially separated areas may designate a living room for sitting and enjoying drinks with friends. Other areas may be for cooking, and still other areas may be nice dining rooms that just so happen to be outside. These areas might be separated by strategically placed decks versus patio spaces, decorative privacy fences or the addition of pergolas over certain areas. For instance, Bechoff mentioned that multilevel decks are more popular.

There is also a predominant trend of roofed but open areas, such as freestanding areas with a pergola. Curtained walls that can be closed off or opened up are also trending to allow certain areas to be designated as outdoor rooms. So defined are the outdoor rooms these days, certain areas now have design trends working for them the way indoor spaces might, though geared for durability. Dervin said that outdoor kitchen styles trend towards stainless steel and stone at the moment. “Homeowners are investing in the outdoor kitchen and creating a staycation,” said DiBiasi. One of the most popular outdoor kitchen cooking devices is still the Big Green Egg, which can function as a grill, an outdoor oven and a smoker. “It uses all natural lump coal so you’re cooking green as well.” She also said modular items that homeowners can install and move around, like moveable islands, are popular. DiBiasi cited Fire Magic as a good brand for modular products. In terms of general style, DiBiasi has seen outdoor areas moving to a more contemporary look. “People are saying, ‘let’s go glass beads and match the color of our furniture.’ It’s more fashion forward.” LIGHTING

Lighting accents add charm and nighttime functionality to the expanded outdoor living space. Low-voltage LED landscape lighting is a popular choice for lighting up trees, pathways and homes. LED

lights see an average life of 20 years, as opposed to the 10,000 hours of more traditional halogen lights. LED tends to be more expensive, but homeowners are finding the purchase to pay off in the long run since the life of the light is drastically longer. For LED landscape lighting styles, rustic and craftsman are popular choices right now. LANDSCAPING TRENDS

The goal of outdoor living is to fully enjoy the beauty of nature, so homeowners are also focusing on making their yards as attractive as possible. One way to achieve those levels of beauty is to make sure the yard is attractive with as little effort as possible. Low-maintenance landscapes still rate as a popular choice for homeowners. Many homeowners use more groundcover, such as ferns, to reduce mulching and weeding. Gardens continue to be a popular focus for outdoor living, with organic gardens becoming increasingly popular. Vegetable gardens with a decorative fence and a nice pathway to and around the garden tend to be popular. Some more unconventional choices are popular right now, including orchards and vineyards, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects. DECKING AND PATIOS

Often providing the largest space for outdoor socializing, decks and patios have a number of popular trends at the moment. Bechoff said, “Composite decking and cable rail systems on

decks are popular right now. Instead of spindles you have cables that go horizontally across.” Bechoff also said that design styles for decks mirror the indoors with built-in seating and built-in planters. One home had an oak pattern that expanded onto the deck outdoors. “People like to expand their living space to the deck as the weather gets nicer,” Bechoff said. So, when he began looking for an area remodeler, he kept this in mind and wanted to find the right contractor who would take his hope seriously and transform his home accordingly. After researching many area companies, he decided that Benco Construction, in Bohemia, NY, who specializes in alterations and custom home design, was the best company for him to use. MODERN TRANSFORMATION

According to Patrick Bentivegna, with Benco Construction, transforming this nearly 40-year-old Cape Cod into the modern country home of the homeowners’ dreams required much-needed planning and creativity. Because of the grade of the property—and the homeowner’s needs—the entire home needed to be raised and re-supported. New retaining walls were built and the existing concrete foundation needed to be reinforced. Additionally, the entire property was re-graded. RUSTIC QUALITY

“To achieve the rustic, but modern, outdoor look the homeowner was seeking, Benco could not simply use one material,” Patrick said. “Many combinations of materials were employed.” 24

The roof was re-built with grey aluminum metal. The remainder of the home was finished with grey stained marine-grade plywood, cement stucco and cedar planks all on rain screens. The overall finish enhances the rustic surroundings and complexity of the natural composition of the wooded area so highly valued by the homeowner. OPEN AREAS

Overcoming some exterior obstacles, Benco then focused on the interior. The original Cape Cod design was a closed space. After careful consideration, Benco was able to modify the floor plan into an open space. “When one is indoors, they should never feel closed in,” Patrick said. Benco installed custom-made, floor-to-ceiling German windows, which are trimmed with German Alder wood. The wooded area outside had now been successfully blended with the interior. In order to accommodate these stunning windows, additional steel work was installed to help maintain integrity of the roof. As with the exterior, combinations of materials were used internally. This maintained the overall flow of design and enhanced the country look the owner was hoping for.

Four-inch rift wood flooring, with radiant heat below, was installed. Marble and stone were used on the countertops throughout, with the home trimmed in a combination of cedar stone, granite and terrazzo. Lastly, the master bedroom was moved from the second to the first floor. HOMEOWNER VERY HAPPY

After the completion of the project, the homeowner couldn’t be happier. “Benco Construction’s planning and process was very successful and I love my new home,” he said. This 1970s-built home recently got a facelift and now has a beautiful curb appeal.

The homeowners of this ranch house built in the1970s wanted it to get a facelift. It needed a new roof, siding and windows—but they also wanted it to have a lot more curb appeal and have a much more modern design. After researching many area remodeling companies, the homeowners ultimately decided to use Meadowview Construction, Inc., in Ronkonkoma, NY, to take on the project. According to Barry Goggin, owner of Meadowview Construction Inc., after talking with the homeowners and learning everything they wanted to do with the home, they came up with a plan. “What we proposed was a new exterior that would have a variety of gables to add some dimension to the house, as well as a front portico by the door for a nicer entrance,” Barry says. The old casement windows with the diamond grilles would also be replaced with double-hung windows with removable classic-style grilles. In the center of the house there would be a large reverse gable that would incorporate the portico over the front door. To break up the right side of the house, a small dormer with a gable roof would be built. Finally, over the garage Meadowview Construction would extend the existing gable, install an "eyebrow" roof over the garage door and install

a decorative accent at the peak. “Since the house was almost 60-feet long, we felt that we needed to break up the new siding so the center section of the house would receive cultured stone.” GETTING STARTED

The first step was to frame the gables. After all of the framing was complete and the windows were installed, the roofing and siding were installed. The colors were carefully selected for matching. “The cultured stone was also carefully selected to coordinate with the roofing and siding,” Barry said. SPECIAL PRODUCTS & DESIGNS INCORPORATED

Instead of duplicating the first floor windows, they decided to add arch top windows above the upstairs windows. Then they custom-made Azek panels and crowns over all the windows. Over the front door portico they used Azek panels and trim boards instead of more vinyl siding or stone. “Over the garage gable we also designed Azek panels and brackets to accent that large space. We replaced the old octagon window next to the front door with a more modern oval window,” Barry said. “We then ordered a custom made Azek oval 4" trim to finish the outside front door in fiberglass that we stained a dark English walnut to set it apart from the rest of the house.” The new garage door is wood with arch top glass panels to match the arches in the gable windows. www.remodelinform.com

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

BEAUTIFUL AND IMPECCABLE RESULTS

According to Barry, there were several challenges to overcome. “The architect drew the gables at certain pitches but they had to be adjusted once we started framing so they all matched,” he said. The right side dormer had to be built taller, then drawn out, because the interior may someday be finished rooms and we had to allow for an 8' ceiling. The custom gable trim over the garage was not on the plan, but again, when they started siding it was clear that it was a big area that needed to be broken up. Making the portico "fit" over the front door and centered was also a challenge. “We asked the homeowners to come to the supply house to match up stone, roofing and siding samples from a big selection. This was a long process but it proved worthwhile.”

The look of the 1970s is completely gone. The homeowner is thrilled that all of the old materials are gone and replaced with low-maintenance siding. The long ranch look is gone. The windows and doors are much more energy efficient as well as providing a newer cleaner look. The cultured stone makes a huge impression. The portico now provides a larger covered entrance to the house. Even the garage is enhanced with the flying gables, roof returns, a new garage door with arched glass and decorative gable panels. The homeowner couldn’t be happier with the results and Meadowview Construction has even received many referrals from this job.

After this beach home was devastated by Super Storm Sandy, this homeowner decided to build a modular home.

hen this 1,400-square-foot, ranch-style home was devastated by Super Storm Sandy, the homeowner originally thought that the home could be repaired and rebuilt. “It was originally a two bedroom, one bathroom home. It was a beach cottage and it had been remodeled in the past,” she said. After being in the Day Park neighborhood for about 28 years, she knew that she wanted to stay in the neighborhood and also stay on the beachfront property. Her original remodeler Jarro Building Industries Corp., in East Meadow, NY, came out to the home and looked at the damage. The home took on about two feet of water from the storm. “They went over my options with me. When I assessed the damage, and the amount of time and cost to completely rebuild the home, I started to look at other options.” She talked with other remodeling companies and began to look at modular home companies as well.

Jarro had done some remodeling work for her about 10 years ago, which included gutting about 60 percent of the home and adding an additional bedroom and also remodeling the kitchen and the living room area. Andy Bashford, who was a carpenter with Jarro at the time, did such a great job on the previous remodel, that ultimately she decided to trust the company to lead her in the right direction again. “I was very happy with the work that they had done in the past. Andy had done such a great job. One of my priorities was to get back to my home as soon as possible, so Jarro suggested that I look at more modular companies and compare the price and amount of time the project would take,” she said. “After looking at many different companies, I decided to go with them because of their quality construction. For example, they use Andersen Windows, which I liked, and they use real plywood and better materials,” she said. According to Andy, the homeowner at first really wanted to rebuild the damaged home and Jarro was geared up to do so. “After weighing her options though, she decided to demolish and rebuild a brand new modular home. We were excited to take this on and worked for approximately two months to review her wishes and fine tune the design in conjunction with her architect,” he said. After deciding what she wanted, Jarro was ready to order the modular home, which would provide the homeowner the semi-finished shell. “Westchester Modular Homes built the home in a climate-controlled factory, while the helical piles and new foundation went in,” Andy said. BIGGER IN SIZE

The homeowner looked at all of the different styles to choose from. She ended up choosing the Cape Cod style, and included more square footage compared to her existing home. She said that she’d talked with the workers at Jarro and explained what she wanted. “They were very helpful in finding the right model that would work for me,” she said. The completed home is three bedrooms, and two and one-half bathrooms. “Jarro was excellent about efficiently using the space. They helped me make design decisions, and just the task of laying out the plumbing—they made sure that it was efficient and the best possible way to use the space.” Now that the home is bigger, she is looking forward to entertaining more and taking advantage of the bigger home. Luckily her sister lives close by so she was able to stay with her while the construction took place. “They were great about keeping me informed,” she said. “I would stop by almost every day to see the progress and Andy was excellent on keeping me up-to-date and letting me know what design decisions needed to be made. The overall objective of this project was to update and modernize the master bedroom while incorporating an accent wall of cultured stone to accent the main wall in the bedroom. The client’s overall desires were to enhance the master bedroom by bringing in an innovative look with the use of cultured stone. The stone color was tied in with both the lighting and paint color to meet the homeowner’s overall accented look. This transformation was not intended to enhance functionality, but to enhance the beauty. The homeowners wanted to take the former garage, temporarily turned into a simple room, and transform it into the beautifully finished and accented room they had always hoped for. The bedroom’s existing structures are used in combination with the attractiveness of the cultured stone’s stacked style and smoky Black River Rock color to aesthetically develop the room. There is no specific pattern, which embraces the beauty of the natural stone appearance; augmenting the look of the room. Superior craftsmanship is evident in the manner of the installation of the stone. The stone must be strategically placed without a pattern to maintain the natural look on the wall. It is obvious that there was plenty of attention to detail with the placement of stones. The use of cultured stone on an accent wall was a very innovative approach. Although cultured stone is quite desirable in today’s market, most homeowner expect cultured stone on the exterior of their home. It is over the last few years that cultured stone has made its transition to the inside of the home. This homeowner’s request for the use of stone as an accent wall is something that will be trending in the industry. The obstacles the contractor had to overcome through this project were mainly Superstorm Sandy related. This project was started prior to Sandy and the target date was thrown quite a bit off due to the lack of access to gas and power. Overall, there were no other obstacles encountered.

Silver This project was a total gut and rehab. The owner had just purchased the home and wanted to remodel before they moved in. The home was in need of all new plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems. In addition, the home needed a better use of existing space and it needed to be done in nine weeks. The project had a lot of detailed workmanship. The molding around the windows and doors were 5 piece. There was use of wainscoting in many of the renovated areas. None of the windows installed were in the same location or the same size. Even the exterior used Azek trim in all areas that were supposed to be wood. The homeowner didn’t want any aluminum trim. The windows and doors had all custom-made trim on the exterior.

Platinum This project started out as a cape. We extended the rear of the home to make a larger kitchen. The homeowner also wanted an open feel to their new home. We added a second floor for a master suite with three additional bedrooms that all included their own full baths. The homeowner was very conscious of their health and energy savings, so we incorporated some cost-effective green building materials. Radiant heat was used with several types of radiant applications. On the main floor of the home, we used a retrofit panel that goes above the subfloor. In the kitchen, we used an in-slab method, due to the large tile area. On the second floor, we used a product that went in place of the sub floor. By using radiant heating, we were able to zone each room individually to the homeowner’s request. For cooling we used mini split units to zone each room individually. So there was no dust traveling from one room to another, we used zip wall sheathing system for air sealing. What made this project extremely challenging was getting the homeowner back into their home on time. Two days after we ripped the second floor up, Hurricane Sandy hit. Not a drop of water got into their existing finished basement.

he process of planning this project started back in 2010. New windows were installed as per Installation Masters specifications using Tyvek weather shield wrap and window & door flashing. A Portico arch was set using E-Z Arches helping us get a perfect arch. Decorative details were added from Fypon and fabricated using Azek. Window trim and corners were made by ripping down Azek trim boards, attaching them to the home. Then, we added the finished size over the ripped down piece with PVC cement and finish nails. The Azek trim was installed using P&L premium adhesive along with Cortex screws with white plugs to cover the screws. Painting was done with Sherwin Williams acrylic paint which is recommended by Azek to be used as the final step to cover fasteners. Another obstacle was the length of the space our clients wanted in front of the garage doors and the triple windows on the left side of the porch. Our clients needed easy access to the two car garage and didn’t want to obstruct the view out of the windows. We used micro lams with steel flitch plates to eliminate the need for the middle posts and safely span the opening. Eldorado stone on the posts and front wall added color and texture to balance out the removal of the old brick. Fypon column wraps with recessed panels added to the craftsman style look our client was after. Using accent colors on the columns helps to enhance the depth of the column panel. The color of the stone blended well with existing pavers on the ground.

he owners of this 1970s ranch-style home wanted a complete makeover on the first floor living area. They wanted a larger kitchen for more than one cook with a casual eating area and no table in the kitchen. The living room would house the TV, so the old family room became a cozy seating area by the new French doors and remodeled fireplace. The new plan was very extensive in that it gutted the entire living space, removed all the interior walls (bearing and non-bearing) and renovated the stairs and entrance hall. Since we were gutting the living space, we replaced the insulation as well. To carry the load of the unfinished attic above, a 12” steel I-beam to span about 26’ was needed. The new space still acts as a kitchen, living room, dining area and fireplace seating space, but with no walls. The new kitchen has white cabinets on the walls and darker contrasting cabinets in the island, with plenty of cabinet and counter space and new energy-efficient appliances. There is a built-in microwave and built-in coffee maker for added convenience. The room is lit by recessed lights as well as under cabinet lights and pendants over the island. A new, large arch top window lets in plenty of natural light over the sink.

The new stairs and raised ceiling make a dramatic effect when entering the house. The hallway leads to a wider opening in the newly opened-up space. The dark wood oak floors tie the new open space together. With such a large space, larger 3 1/2” trim was installed around all windows and doors, 5 1/2” trim on the floor and 4” crown moulding on the ceiling. The old fireplace looks brand new with the cultured stone and bluestone hearth.

2. To make the interior living space aesthetically pleasing and a more comfortable environment.

he client of this entire house remodel was looking for a complete update of a dated farm ranch that originally belonged to his parents. He wanted to increase the living space, update all mechanicals while updating the envelope of the home creating a more energy efficient and comfortable interior living environment. Aesthetically, he was looking for a traditional space, but not necessarily a cookie cutter of the other homes in the community. Clients needs - The client had several needs:

1. To reconfigure the existing living space to accommodate his family while simultaneously updating the existing structure and improving traffic flow. The existing structure was at best dated. The rooms were compartmentalized and had no real flow. We worked closely with the owner to redesign the home with an open and airy floor plan that would take advantage of the view of the rear yard and built in pool. The existing four levels were redesigned to include, 1st level - basement - with a large family room, powder room, laundry room, utility room and storage area; 2nd level included the den and an open floor plan that included the kitchen, breakfast area, dining area and grand entryway with picturesque staircase; 3rd level included three (3) bedrooms and two (2) full bathrooms; 4th level is the Master Suite with two (2) walk in closets, large master bathroom, separate hallway and a private deck. The new layout created a seamless flow while opening up the entire house conducive to entertaining or just relaxing.

This goal was accomplished with the use of Andersen Windows, Tyvek House Wrap and new insulation throughout. The existing antiquated inefficient heating system was removed and replaced with a more efficient gas fired Peerless heating system and a Lennox cooling system. The old outdated hot water heater was also removed and a new efficient Boch hot water heater was installed. Finally the existing wood burning double sided fireplace was converted to gas, offering warmth and atmosphere. 3. Understanding and sensitivity. The existing home was the home the owner had grown up in. Sadly, the home is also where his wife of many years had passed away after a long bout with cancer, leaving him and his two teenage children alone. As all remodelers know, any remodel project can be an emotional rollercoaster for a homeowner. But on the heals of such a loss it can be a volatile situation. Every room, nook and cranny of this house had a memory attached to it for better or worse and every change had to be handled with respect and extreme sensitivity.

RESIDENTIAL KITCHEN $80K – $120K

he homeowners wished to have many improvements to their kitchen. They entertain frequently, often for groups of ten to twenty people, and desired more space for them to work. One of the difficulties of the project was in designing the extension. The ceiling, which sloped toward the front of the house, was changed to a reverse gable. The kitchen faces the front of the house, and the main entry and steps are adjacent to the kitchen, which was 186 inches wide. The stone work on the steps, as well as the hand rail on the outside, could not be modified. The kitchen was extended thirty inches toward the front of the house, and the left front corner of the extension was designed to be 180 inches, and it was stepped in six inches to accommodate the hand rail and steps. The entry into the kitchen had previously been immediately next to the front door. This entry was relocated just about beside itself, creating a small foyer for the main entry. This created a six inch notch in the wall adjacent to

the front door. The left corner base cabinets were then made only 18 inches deep. The refrigerator was then placed next to the shallow cabinets, and to the eye, they appear to be a standard corner. This gave symmetry to the upper cabinets. A new arched window was installed in the reverse gable above an arched valance. The cabinets flanking the casement window, which was reused, were stepped up and below the adjacent wall cabinets and were given glass shelves and doors. LED lighting was installed inside, above and below these cabinets, as well as above the valance. LED lighting was also used under all of the wall cabinets to illuminate the counters. Recessed ceiling fixtures and pendants were also incorporated to provide generous amount of lighting in the entire area. The existing range was reused, while the hood, with staggered heights of cabinets flanking it, was created to broaden the appearance of the cooking area. A steam/ convection oven was installed in a taller base cabinet near the range. A microwave cabinet, which sat on top of the steam oven, anchored the end of the cabinet run. The counters were Cambria Quartz in the color Canterbury, selected for the ease of maintenance and its appeal. There are small flecks of orange in the stone and a glass accent tile of the same color was used in a pattern in the tumbled marble field tile as well as over the range. The wall paint was the same color as the glass accent tile. At the island, the back splash was recessed between the columns of the elevated counter and outlet strips were installed to provide power for the counter. With the transformation of their kitchen completed, they now can prepare meals and entertain their guests in style.

he owner of this East End property was quite specific in his desire: he wanted to feel as if he were standing in a wooded area while in his home - like a tree house. Transforming the nearly 40-year-old Cape Cod into the modern country home of his dreams required much planning and creativity. Because of the grade of the property, and the owner’s needs, the entire home needed to be raised and reBenco Construction supported. New retaining walls were built, the existing Houzz.com/benco-construction concrete foundation was reinforced and the entire property was re-graded. To achieve the “rustic but modern Porch.com/pros/benco-construction-2 outdoorsy” look the client was seeking, we could not simply use one material. The remainder of the home was finished with grey stained marine-grade plywood, cement stucco and cedar planks all on rain screens.
