A GOOD TIME FOR OPTIMISM am optimistic about recent improvements in our economy. Housing prices and housing sales are slowly rising in our area. And the stock market is again nearing the levels it was at before the recession. I remain hopeful that the investment many of us have made in our homes will pay off. In fact, we’re already seeing some homeowners begin to reinvest in their homes in the form of remodeling projects. Many exceptional projects are discussed in the pages of this magazine. This issue of Remodeling Today also toasts the winners of our CotY (Contractor of the Year) Awards. They recognize excellence in the remodeling industry in several categories including whole-house renovations and kitchen & bath remodels to name a few. Award recipients have demonstrated superior craftsmanship and design innovation. They are just a sample of the great work done by our members. If these jobs

Certified Remodeler (CR) Designed to recognize and identify fullservice remodelers. Candidates must have a minimum of five years experience and be employed by or own a firm that derives 90 percent of its sales volume from remodeling. Certified Remodeler Associate (CRA) Recognizes individuals who actively support the remodeling industry, such as architects, designers, educators, manufacturers, publishers, suppliers and consultants. Certified Remodeler Specialist (CRS) Reserved for remodelers who specialize in a particular area of the industry, such as roofing or flooring, etc.
Master Certified Remodeler (MCR) This designation recognizes Certified Remodelers that have demonstrated commitment to the remodeling industry through support of their local chapter, NARI National, and/or their local community. The MCR identifies Certified Remodelers that have withstood the test of time and continue to be successful within the industry. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application to qualify for the MCR certification, candidates must be a Certified Remodeler for a minimum of 10 consecutive years and hold another NARI certification. Candidates must have been involved with their local NARI chapter or NARI National and/or involvement as a leader in the local community. Candidates must submit a letter of recommendation from their chapter executive or chapter president or three letters of recommendation from recent clients. Universal Design Certified Remodeler (UDCR) Individuals with the UDCR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of universal design and remodeling. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application, to qualify for the UDCR certification exam, candidates must have been in the remodeling industry for a minimum of 5 years. Candidates must also have completed a minimum of 8 hours of universal design remodeling/building related education.
Certified Lead Carpenter (CLC) Designed for lead carpenters who are skilled and knowledgeable in the technical, hands-on aspects of their work, but also have demonstrated skill and knowledge in project management, supervision and customer service. Candidates must have a minimum five years experience with at least two of those years as a lead carpenter. Companies who believe in providing a quality product will make sure their lead carpenters are trained and certified so they can produce better jobs, be more professional, run projects more efficiently, and interact more proactively with their customers. Certified Kitchen & Bath Remodeler (CKBR) This designation allows homeowners to identify contractors who do extensive work in kitchen and bath remodeling, and have gone the extra mile to improve themselves and their firm’s capabilities in these areas. The CKBR certification addresses the unique aspects of kitchen & bath design and remodeling, including technical expertise and new product knowledge. Green Certified Professional (GCP) The GCP designation is designed to recognize and identify remodelers who apply green or sustainable principles to their remodeling projects. They understand key green building concepts including energy efficiency, site management and use, indoor air quality, water conservation and the use of building materials and finishes. The GCP certification addresses how green remodeling can make homes more durable, efficient, sustainable, healthier to live in and less expensive to operate.

If It’s Too Good to be True… By Lorraine Hart I’m sure that we have all heard the expression “it’s too good to be true.” For some, finding something that is “too good to be true” is followed by exuberance or excitement. For many, it is followed by skepticism, doubt and caution. Even when there is disbelief, however, we are often tempted to go for it anyway – whatever it is. So now let’s ask if it’s too good to be true, then what?

ather than ponder this in the general sense, I would like to explore “too good to be true” as it applies to your home improvements. For the sake of this article, we will consider all home improvements including remodeling, renovations or repairs. This of course applies equally to additions or even building a new home. Often what is too good to be true is the price of the improvement and that is usually where the trouble begins. Most of us would not be fooled by a super low price for a luxury car; we would want to know why it was so cheap. We would probably assume that it is a lemon and run the other way. The same applies in finding what is supposed to be a great steak dinner for a rock-bottom price. Now, I am not saying that there aren’t opportunities to benefit from specials or that the car or dinner must be expensive to be great, but let’s face it, there are standards and expectations when it comes to luxury cars or great steak dinners. The concern is that if we are faced with a seemingly “too good to be true” opportunity and we let the excitement carry us away, we can be hurt by it.

Looking again at your home improvement project, it is critically important that you don’t get carried away by the excitement of the great deal. Just keep in mind that if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is too good to be true. Let’s examine some of the elements that can seem to be so good. Although there are many, I will address some of the more important ones by contrasting the truth with the fairy tales of construction. Some of these essentials might relate to integrity of design, quality of materials, quality of workmanship, schedules, permits, licenses, insurances, reliability of the contractor and the safety of your home and family. Some of these issues stem from the others, and many are interrelated. In terms of the design and quality of products, the important thing to remember is that you get what you pay for. I am not necessarily saying something has to be expensive to be good. What I am saying is that there is a threshold below which no reputable architect, designer, builder or remodeler will go. Unfortunately, I regularly hear about the homeowners who chose not to go with the reputable contractor and then come back looking for help. Sometimes they need help getting the project completed; sometimes they come back a year or two later to re-do the renovation that should have lasted 8 – 10 years. I have spoken to a few remodeling contractors who get lots of referrals from the prospects who chose another contractor. Unfortunately these people realized too late that their deal really was too good to be true, and now warn their family and friends not to make the same mistake. Professionals will also be knowledgeable regarding code compliance and safety. He or she will also be educated and experienced with regards to the right materials and needed workmanship for the project. Unfortunately when you ignore some of these factors, you may end up with problems on your project. These problems can include your project not passing inspections, accidents and mistakes on the job, major delays once a job is started, and unsafe workmanship. Although some of these issues may not be obvious at first, they will often show up later. Obviously, incorrectly wired electrical is a fire hazard, incorrectly installed plumbing leads to water damage, and poor product quality or installation leads to costly repairs. Doing a project without the required permits is fraught with risk.

If It’s Too Good To Be True… I have only touched on some of the short-cuts that can be taken to give you that deal that is “too good to be true.” The key here is to realize that if it’s too good to be true, then there is something that is missing. I realize that none of us likes to pay more than we have to for our project or repair, but I also realize that when someone comes along with a great deal there is a reason for it. Just recognize that the contractor who can undercut all the competition either isn’t legitimate, is leaving something out or will soon be out of business. Unfortunately the scenario of contractors going out of business is usually a nightmare for their clients as well as themselves. If you are the unlucky client whose project is in progress, you will have the difficult task of finding someone to pick up the pieces. If instead, your project has already been completed, you will have to find someone else to handle the service issues and other problems that will probably arise. Another very important issue that you must pay attention to is change orders. Change orders are vital to many projects for a few reasons, but they should not be used to trick you. Change orders do just what their name implies. They allow you to request changes or upgrades to your project. They can also be used to handle special product selections. They may even be used by the contractor to specify needed changes due to unforeseen conditions in your home. It’s important to you that you understand when and why change orders will be used. As I said, they should not be used as a way to lure you with low-ball pricing by hiding many of the basic or necessary costs of the project. I strongly recommend that you look for the missing ingredients when you find a proposal that is too good to be true. Just keep in mind, that if it is too good to be true, it may just be a fairy tale that you hope comes true. “When I give a customer a $100,000 quote, it means the job will cost $100,000,” says Budd Shamroth, CR and president of Before and After Remodeling and Consulting. “Unscrupulous contractors will often give a consumer a ‘low-ball’ price and the minute they are in the client’s home, they start hitting them with charges for extras.” “That’s why having a thorough, well-written contract is so important,” Shamroth adds. “If your contractor isn’t asking you detailed questions about what you want, it should be a red flag.” Robert Kirsic, CKBR and president of Timeline Renovations agrees. “If you have three or four bids on your project and one is significantly lower than the others, you need to ask yourself why that price is so low,” he says. “If that firm’s contract is vague and doesn’t specify the exact details of your 20

project and the specific materials you’ve requested, that’s a cause for concern.” As you contemplate your home improvement project, I suggest you concentrate on your dream or vision for your home and find ethical professionals who will help you fulfill that vision. There are some basic qualifications for which you should look. “Make sure the contractor you hire is licensed and insured,” stresses Shamroth. “A check with the Better Business Bureau is also a good idea.” “I suggest homeowners look for a member of the NYC/LI Chapter of NARI,” Kirsic says. “I’m a big believer in our certification programs [see page 12], which assures that the contractor you hire is dedicated to superior craftsmanship and professionalism.” They will assure that the materials and workmanship are appropriate for your project, whether it be a repair, simple home improvement or extensive renovation. These are the professionals who you will feel comfortable communicating with, who you will want in your home and who you will want to refer to your family and friends. T
he overall objective for this project was to renovate an existing abandoned home into commercial office space. This was a century old home, so the owner wanted to maintain the historic look of its time period while making necessary upgrades. The front entry was restored, thick door trim was re-created, and molding, flooring, paint, and carpeting was replaced throughout the home. One of the home’s special features is the custom gold-leafed paint used to accent the beauty of the restored fireplace and the architectural columns in the front entryway.

his family’s home was destroyed by a fire in the spring of 2010. Feeling fortunate no one was hurt, they set out to rebuild. The new plans called for some of the rooms to be slightly different than before, but it would still have three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen and den. The master bedroom now features a new barrel ceiling and master bath. The new plan also called for a 14-foot raised ceiling in the living room for a dramatic effect, which also keeps the area open to the kitchen and dining room. The floors throughout the house are new American Cherry and the foyer touts a herringbone pattern. To take advantage of the water view, the back walls of the house have plenty of glass as well as French doors to the deck. Off the kitchen, there was a screened-in porch that was rebuilt with a cedar ceiling, white-paneled walls and a bluestone floor. Two zero-clearance fireplaces are now installed in the house, one for wood burning and the other for gas. A beautiful new kitchen was designed and installed with stainless steel appliances and plenty of light.

To achieve a Five Star EnergyStar rating, closed and open cell spray foam were sprayed in the exterior walls and the roof rafters. An efficient boiler was installed and duct work was fully insulated. A fresh air exchanger was installed in the attic to help keep the air healthy for the occupants. High-efficiency Marvin windows were installed. Wood cedar shakes were used for the siding and pre-finished for many years of low maintenance. The back deck on the home is also made of a low maintenance material.

esides the master bathroom, the homeowners had completed most of their renovations prior to moving in. It wasn’t until they settled in did they realize that the bathroom layout wasn’t conducive to their needs, even though the previous owners had already renovated the bathroom once before. Since the master bedroom is very large, the client didn’t mind the idea of taking away some square footage from the bedroom to add to the bathroom. We opted for a pocket door in lieu of the existing swinging door, and plumbing was installed to accommodate a new double vanity with mirrors. We also creatively found a way to include a rare luxury for any Manhattan apartment: a washer and dryer. Moving through the double doors of the “grand” shower enclosure, you step into the lavish “his and hers” shower area. Each has the luxury of their own overhead rain shower along with a handheld shower head. Beyond the shower, a slipper tub on a raised platform has become the focal point of the bathroom, replacing the older tub that was once cramped into a corner. Niches were carved into both the shower areas and along the sides of the tub to create additional space for the homeowners, who were quite pleased with their new bathroom and the way the layout now better serves their needs, both individually and together.

hen Lisa Scansarole decided to redo the deck on the back of her home, she hoped to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a beach-side oasis complete with a tikibar. “I wanted a place where I could entertain guests that would remind them of being at the beach,” she says. She turned to Doug Dervin, CR, CLR and president, of Double D Contractors and together they came up with a design that matched her vision and set about building her beach-themed retreat. Double D used AZEK decking for the surface of the new 20' x 30' deck. One of its stunning design features is a set of circular steps going down into the yard which required the Double D team to work at bending the AZEK material. The centerpiece of the uncovered portion of the deck is a circular stone fire pit. Like the campfire ring of lore, it is a great place for Lisa’s guests to gather around and chat with one another. The covered bar area is surrounded by exterior stone walls and vinyl siding. The bar top and countertops are made of matching granite. Pendant lighting and a ceiling fan provide ambiance in the evening. The bar, which seats four, also features a built-in barbeque, a wine cooler and a refrigerator to keep drinks cool.

arcor Construction, Inc.’s overall objective of this project was to increase the workspace in the kitchen area and enlarge the area’s counter space. While doing this, additional goals of the project included recreating the storage and organization system and increasing the kitchen’s lighting while updating the appearance of the kitchen. Marcor Construction, Inc. slightly increased the overall size of the entire kitchen area by extending two feet into the existing living room area. This increased the size of counter space and work area. The oven and stove were combined into one appliance and the refrigerator was relocated to increase counter and cabinet space. They replaced all of the existing appliances with more modern and accommodating products, recreated storage system and increased the lighting system. Enhancements on this project involved a combination of modernization and eye appealing attributes. This kitchen is the entrance point of the house; the first room seen when walking into the home. The resident’s main goal was to make this room the most desirable kitchen to walk into with a bright and inviting feeling when entering the home.

Their desire to make the kitchen both “different” and something you wouldn’t see just anywhere met by tying the cultured stone into the project. The use of cultured stone behind the glass front cabinets and as the kitchen's backsplash, was an innovative option. Cultured stone is not often a material anyone would expect to see in a kitchen, however, it is a focal point and a major contribution to the beauty and uniqueness of the kitchen area.

he clients wanted to create a home with two distinct personalities: a quaint, traditional exterior capable of unassumingly fitting in to their charming Long Island community, and a stark modern interior worthy of the chicest Manhattan neighborhood. With the clients’ main goal being entertaining friends, the project was planned with this as the primary initiative. To begin, a full gut and renovation was started, leaving only one original wall standing from the original structure. An existing two car detached garage was cut in half to a single car garage to maximize crucial yard space that is valuable for entertaining. personal styles of the clients. The unique interior of this house is perhaps what really stands out. Once inside, guests are met with a truly modern design including stark white walls, furniture, and accents. The main level’s design is a continuous flow conducive to guests. The kitchen and living room flow openly into one another, making for one unbroken space. This was an important detail the clients preferred because it allowed them to cook and entertain simultaneously. Throughout the house, details were used to contrast the smooth white design and add texture and functionality. Throughout the interior, antique oak floors were laid, bleached, and stained white, while in the kitchen white concrete countertops were installed. In the living room the fireplace was encased in custom plaster panels. In an effort to maximize space, a fully finished basement was added, including a personal gym, a wine cellar inconspicuously tucked underneath the stairs, a study and bedroom that overlooks a tranquil garden. The second story includes a stunning master suite and an additional bedroom with bathroom en suite. The exterior of this home was a challenge to plan due to space constraints, but with careful attention to property details, we were able to provide the clients with a backyard complete with pool, hot tub, and ample room for entertaining guests. In the end, this project saw a once neglected eyesore transformed into an attractive and truly unique property both inside and out. The proud owners of this home are now free to entertain year-round in style and comfort.

he client of this entire house remodel was looking for a complete update of a ranch they just purchased. They wanted to increase the living space, update all mechanicals while updating the envelope of the home, creating a more energy efficient and comfortable interior living environment. Aesthetically, they were looking for a traditional space, but not necessarily a cookie cutter of the other homes in the community. The exterior has gone from worn and drab to bold yet refined. The home now has a more modern and up-to-date feel, while maintaining the traditional feel the owner was going for. The stone in the front breaks up the lines of the vinyl siding and offers texture and depth to the front. The dark stained front adds warmth. The entire interior was gutted and brought into the 21st century with an elegant entryway, kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, family room, living room, office, grand entry and a new efficient traffic flow.

hile the Carneys worked with their insurance company, their architect—Mark Mancini of Smithtown—drew up plans for an extensive renovation. This saved a significant amount of time in the permit process, reducing the time the family needed to be out of their home to just nine months. To build their home, the Carneys called on Barry Goggin, president of Meadowview Construction, Inc. Goggin was recommended by Mancini (the architect). Together, they would transform the fire-damaged site into a beautiful new home.
THE RENOVATION
The plans called for some of the rooms to be slightly different than before, but it would still have three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen and den. The master bedroom now features a new barrel ceiling and master bath. The new plan also called for a 14-foot raised ceiling in the living room for a dramatic effect and keeps the area open to the kitchen and dining room. The floors throughout the house are new American Cherry and the foyer touts a herringbone pattern. To take advantage of the water view, the back walls of the house have plenty of glass as well as 36

French doors to the deck. Off the kitchen, there was a screened-in porch that was rebuilt with a cedar ceiling, white-paneled walls and a bluestone floor. Two zero-clearance fireplaces are now installed in the house, one for wood burning and the other for gas. A beautiful new kitchen was designed and installed with stainless steel appliances and plenty of light. All of the interior doors and trim were manufactured and supplied by the custom mill shop at Kleet Lumber of Huntington. AN ENERGY STAR HOME
Because the home was more than 50 percent damaged, the local codes call for it to be rebuilt to meet Energy Star requirements. To achieve this Five Star rating, closed and open cell spray foam were sprayed in the exterior walls and the roof rafters by Delfino Energy Systems. A boiler with a 93% efficiency rating was installed and the central air conditioning duct work was fully insulated. With such a tightly enclosed house, a fresh air exchanger was installed in the attic to help keep the house efficient as well as healthy for the occupants. High-efficiency Marvin windows were installed as well as a custom made steel entrance door also supplied by Kleet. On the exterior, the roofing has a lifetime warranty and the wood cedar shakes were pre-finished at the factory for many years of low maintenance. All of the exterior trim is made of Azek. The back deck on the home is also made of low maintenance Azek with a custom composite railing. The wood fireplace chases were covered in a thin stone which adds a beautiful finishing touch to the exterior. FEELS LIKE HOME

“The new renovation feels very much like home to us,” says Carney. “We changed the den up a bit— the placement of the fireplace and the size of the room—and we really enjoy it.” “The new kitchen is really well done, we’re fond of the custom-designed cabinets and it really serves us well,” he adds. “We are very happy with the results.” This project is the 2012 recipient of the Contractor of the Year award in it's category by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and Green Project Recognition. To the Rescue On the program George to the Rescue, host George Oliphant and his team rescue the homes of deserving people. So, when a family with 19 children—many of them with special needs—needed a new bathroom, George and a team of local contractors and suppliers answered the call.

arbara and Bob Mongillo have six biological and 13 adopted children. Many of the adopted children are severely handicapped and bath time at the Mongillos was difficult in their traditionally designed bathroom with a standard tub. Nine of the children are ambulatory and do not walk on their own, so they need to be carried to the tub, and be lifted in and lifted out. So it now takes both parents to give a bath safely. “Most of our children are very fragile,” Bob says. Many were not expected to live much more than six months or a year and our youngest is now three. As they advance, and thank God they do, and as they’ve gotten bigger, bathing them had become extremely difficult.” “We watch George to the Rescue regularly so last April I decided to email them and tell them about our situation and our bathroom,” he says. “We had a child in the hospital being treated for leukemia at the time so we kind of forgot about it. Then, in September, we got a call from the

producers who asked if they could come out and talk with us.” The producers met the family and toured the home. Told that a decision would be made in January, the Mongillos went about their normal daily activities, which included Barbara staying at the hospital with their three-year-old 24/7. Right before Christmas, the family got another call from the producers asking if they could come out to the house again. This time, when Bob opened the door, there stood George and the cameras and the Mongillos had been rescued. “It was a wonderful experience knowing we were selected and was a real glimmer of hope for us after months of worry about our youngest,” says Bob. “Both Barbara and I were overwhelmed.” THE PROJECT GETS UNDERWAY
The George to the Rescue team wanted a reputable remodeling contractor with solid credentials to handle the project. They turned to Jarro Building Industries Corporation in East Meadow. “They were looking for a firm with a graduated certified remodeler (CGR) and someone with a certified aging in-place specialist (CAPS) who understood the requirements for handicapped accessible facilities,” says Ray Accettella, company president. “They had done their research and found out we meet their qualifications.” “We met with George and his team and saw how Barbara and Bob were trying to bathe these kids every day in an old-fashioned tub—having to lift them in and out without any handicapped facilities—and we knew it was a job we had to do,” Accettella says. The first step Accettella took was to ask an architect familiar with handicapped access to create a design that enabled Jarro to have a working plan with specifications. He then solicited help from his subcontractors and suppliers for labor and materials including lumber, bathroom fixtures, tile, etc. Jarro did all the construction and job coordination for the project. The final plan called for the renovation of the main bathroom, as well as a second bath and a small refresh to one bedroom. The bathrooms were gutted down to the bare walls including removing existing electricity and plumbing. A small closet in the bedroom was removed to make the main bathroom larger. The construction team reframed everything, redid the plumbing, reallocated the baseboard heating system, rewired for new lights, and added a GFI outlet for a new vanity and ceiling fans. The new bathroom features a level floor without any obstacles to step over to get into the shower. The shower area is split into one area with

a shower head and a second area with a seat for children who cannot stand and a hand shower Barbara and Bob can use to wash them off. To make sure the bathroom looked inviting rather than like an institutional bath, the tile supplier provided an elegant pattern and Jarro coupled it with a custom-made vanity featuring a porcelain sink. Besides being attractive, the vanity is handicapped accessible, allowing a wheel chair to roll right up to the sink. Importantly, safety features in the form of grab bars were installed throughout. Additionally, space was conserved by installing a pocket door instead of a traditional swinging door. Amazingly, the on-site construction was completed in nine days. Accettella credits the superb work of the Jarro team and its subcontractors and suppliers who donated all of their time and materials to the project. THE REVEAL

After spending 14 days at a local hotel, the Mongillos were brought back to see their new home. “There are not enough words to express our gratitude for what the show and the workers did for us,” Bob says. “To have these people care about us and our children, when they didn’t know us before they started the project, is just amazing.” “We frequent a deli around the corner from our home (Blue Moon Deli) and we found out the owner provided food for the workers while they were on the job,” he says. “Local merchants helped out. It’s all very humbling and we feel they are part of our extended family.” “When you realize all the work these wonderful parents do so these children can have as normal a life as possible, we just had to help make their lives a little easier,” says Accettella. “To see the joy and happiness at the reveal and know we were able to make their home just a little better of a place makes it all worthwhile.” “As much as we love our new bathroom, if we could get one more person to adopt a special needs child by having our story on George to the Rescue, that would really be great,” Bob concludes. Focus on Outdoor Living:
Decking The backyard deck has been our home’s focal point for outdoor living for many years. Many of us fondly remember having a family cookout, a friendly gathering or just sitting and sipping a cool drink on the deck.
B
ecause it is the transition area between the comfort of our homes and the beauty of our yards, we often spend a significant amount of time and money on the design and construction of our decks. Regardless of whether you opt for a modest 10’ x 10’ platform or a more elaborate multi-level structure, however, the first decision you need to make is the material from which you will build it.
Here, for your consideration, are several of the more common choices: WOOD
The original and still most common decking choice, wood is natural, strong, and easy to install. Because it can splinter, warp and rot, it needs to be cleaned annually and re-stained every few years to keep it looking its best. The most affordable wood option is pressure treated wood. Typically, it is made from Southern yellow pine grown on forest plantations. Redwood and cedar have natural defenses against rot and insects, but are softer woods and can be damaged by heavy traffic. Like all woods, the sun will fade their natural color to gray unless sun-blocking finishes are regularly applied. When cared for, they will last up to 20 years, but are much more expensive than pressure treated wood in the NYC/LI market. Tropical hardwoods like mahogany and Brazilian red wood are quite durable and quite expensive. They can last up to 25 years, but they are difficult to work with because they are so hard. They are also resistant to insects and decay. COMPOSITE DECKING

Composite decking products are building materials manufactured using a mixture of plastic and wood fiber. Composite decking materials are popular because they require less maintenance than wood and often use recycled materials. Brands like Trex and TimberTech composite decking can be molded with a wood grain and come in a variety of colors. Easy to install, composite decking is virtually maintenance free. It won’t rot or split and it resists sun, water and insect damage. Most products feature limited warranties of 10 to 25 years. “I’m seeing more and more jobs going towards composite decking for its durability,” says Evan Meyer, the director of marketing and business development for Kamco Supply. “We carry the Trex Transcend line of decking and railing, and our customers love its unique streaking and diverse color options.” 40

PVC DECKING
Vinyl decking made from cellular PVC is the ultra-low maintenance choice as a decking material. Products from Azek, Trex, TimberTech and others are resistant to stains, mold, insects and fading. Typically less expensive then composite decking, many products in this category have a limited lifetime warranty. ALUMINUM DECKING
Powder coated aluminum decking can be used to create a watertight floor for your deck. This unique material will never splinter, rot or rust. Aluminum decking is strong and lightweight. Because the aluminum decking—LockDry is a popular brand—forms a gapless surface when it’s installed on a second or third level deck, the area underneath remains dry on a rainy day. A UNIQUE FOOTER
“Before the deck even gets put on, you need a solid footer for structural integrity,” says Meyer. “We offer a form-fitter product from WP Fail-Safe.” IBC compliant, the WP Fail-Safe Form Footer for building piers and footings can be assembled without tools in less than 5 minutes. It is designed with integrated rebar holders for both horizontal and vertical rebar and is the only plastic concrete pier footer system with re-bar reinforcement.
