Sintered Ferrite Magnets

Ferrite or Ceramic magnets are manufactured from a composite powder containing Iron oxide and Barium or Strontium oxide. It is most widely used because of its low cost, high-energy, good electric insulation and excellent resistance to demagnetization. The most common type of ceramic magnets are anisotropic strontium, anisotropic barium and isotropic barium magnet. Ferrites suit a wide range of applications due to their low cost. They are readily available in arc segments, blocks, rings and discs. Principal applications are DC motors, loudspeakers, reed switch operation, magnetic separator assemblies and general holding devices such as pot magnets. The unmagnetized blocks are machined using diamond cutting machines to match customers' exact specification. Ferrite has an excellent resistance to demagnetization and can be magnetized before or after assembly without danger of losing any performance. It can be used in operating temperatures ranging from -40°C to + 250°C. However it does h ave a poor temperature coefficient losing approximately 0.2% of remanence per degree C when heated above zero. There are two manufacturing process for ferrite magnets: Dry Process & Wet Process. By dry process, can produce isotropic & anisotropic magnets; by wet process, only anisotropic magnets can be produced. Isotropic ferrite magnets are not oriented and can be magnetized in any direction; anisotropic ferrite magnets are different, they are all oriented in the manufacturing direction, and should be magnetized in the direction of orientation. For dry process, the tool can be changed and developed easily, while for wet process, it is complicated to change the tool and the tooling charge is much higher. At present, we have put our emphasis on arc segment magnets for electric DC motors, ring magnets for loudspeakers, disc magnets and block magnets for special applications.

—— The Strongest Permanent magnets today

Sintered Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnets offer the highest energy per unit volume of any permanent magnet material, mostly an iron based alloy. It is manufactured in numerous energy and temperature grades, with high energy range from 33MGOe to 48MGOe with wonderful coercive force, even 50MGOe in the laboratory. Being less prone to chipping during handling, and has lower temperature coefficient of magnetic properties than Ceramic magnets, higher than SmCo type rare earth magnets, but less expensive, and mechanically stronger and less brittle than SmCo. However, being mostly an iron based alloy, NdFeB type rare earth magnet is much more prone to surface oxidation or rust. To eliminate such a problem, the user should consider magnet coating, plating, or suitable surface treatment. So for most applications, coating or plating is recommended. And also, Because of the brittle nature and high attractive forces generated by NdFeB magnets, great care is needed during handling. Permanent NdFeB magnets are widely used in apparatus, instruments, assemblies where a strong magnetic field is needed, such as motors, sensors, microphones, electro-acoustics, magnetic separation, magnetic suckers and magnetic therapy wraps.
