DIRECTORY / RESOURCE GUIDE
455 North Avenue, Burlington P 863-2075 / F 865-5309
From the Mayor Welcome...
to another packed Parks, Recreation & Waterfront fall and winter brochure! The ambitious and successful effort to rehabilitate and reinvent the Burlington bike path is underway. With the leadership of the Parks & Rec staff, more than 61 Penny for Parks projects have been completed across the City as part of our plan to make significant progress on important community parks projects during the last two years. Incredible progress also is underway to improve public access to Burlington’s waterfront. Longstanding events like the Special Olympics Vermont Penguin Plunge and the Vermont City Marathon can continue to flourish in Waterfront Park, and a world-class skatepark is under construction.
FROM THE MAYOR AND DIRECTOR
In the months ahead, we will break ground on the expansion of the bike path and major improvements of Waterfront Park. We will also soon complete the first-ever Parks Master Plan, a strategy that will guide and maximize the City’s parks investments over the next decade. The vision of a great parks system that the voters supported when they created the Penny for Parks program in 2008 and through their votes for waterfront and bike path investments in 2012 and 2014 is well on the way to becoming a reality. Great parks make a great community, and we should be proud of the financial and social investment Burlingtonians have made in all corners of the City. We welcome you to take advantage of the quality programs offered by our staff and partners to help keep Burlington healthy and vibrant. We look forward to enjoying with you all Burlington has to offer, in every season. Warmly,
Miro Weinberger Mayor of Burlington
From the Director Greetings, Our staff welcomes you to another amazing opportunity to recreate with us in Burlington. Cooler temperatures only increase the importance of providing a variety of opportunities for people to interact and stay active. This year’s brochure offers it all, from soccer, skating, and basketball to pie making and writing workshops. Find places for gathering with others or enjoy quiet solitude in over 35 miles of trails and 37 parks. Year-round chances exist for all types of multi-modal recreation for you to hike, bike, or dog sled your way to health and wellness. Continued progress comes to us this year as we bring new life and energy to the parks and recreation programs in Burlington. We hope that you take advantage of all we have to offer as we strive to deepen the positive connections and lifetime relationships between people and parks. Your input and feedback is always welcome, so please feel free to reach out by phone (802) 864-0123 or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @btvparks.
Best,
Jesse Bridges Director and Harbormaster, Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront

Responsible Dog Ownership Campaign Pet Food Warehouse, the Humane Society of Chittenden County, and the Burlington Department of Parks, Recreation & Waterfront have joined in partnership to campaign for the best life in Burlington for the people and dogs of our community. In light of the dog-centricity of our city, we’re jointly promoting conscientious dog ownership to help ensure that Burlington stays beautiful and our city remains a safe and harmonious place to live. With input from our community, we’ve developed the following guidelines for responsible dog ownership. Please help us spread awareness!
The Ten Commands(ments) of Dog Ownership 5) Use identification. A microchip or ID tag is the best way to ensure that your wayward pooch is returned home. 6) License your dog. Why bother? Because dog licensing helps the city keep us and our dogs safe. We all want to know that local dogs are vaccinated against rabies, and that our neighbors are in compliance with zoning laws. Furthermore, licenses communicate to animal control that a missing dog has an owner—and where that owner lives. Finally, the fees from dog licenses pay for that well-trained animal control officer— an essential service for our dog-centric city! 7) Vaccinations save lives. There were 14 cases of rabies in Chittenden County in 2012. Make sure your dog is never one of those cases. 8) On hot days, leave the pooch home. Your parked car quickly becomes an oven in warm temperatures. Don’t chance it—even for a few minutes. 9) Be a good neighbor. Some dogs have a lot to say—but your neighbors may not want to hear it! Curb incessant backyard barking by creating visual barriers along fencing.
10) Commit to the overall health and well-being of your dog! Nutrition, training, exercise, socialization and vet care all contribute to your dog’s mental and physical health. Our community is rich in knowledge about pet care. The staff at Pet Food Warehouse or the Humane Society of Chittenden County are available to help you with any questions or concerns you have about providing the best life for your dog— and yourself, as his or her guardian.

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP CAMPAIGN
1) Scoop the poop! Yeah, it’s not fun. But abandoned poop is not only stinky and unattractive, it winds up in our lake. Keep Burlington and Vermont beautiful: dispose of dog waste in designated trash receptacles! 2) Follow leash laws. Leash laws exist to protect dogs and people. Some dogs may not welcome being approached by a strange dog, and some people are not comfortable around dogs. In off-leash areas, dogs should be on voice command or sight control. 3) Ensure your dog has the space he or she needs with a yellow ribbon. Would your dog rather not be greeted when on-leash? Tie a yellow ribbon on the leash to signal to others that he or she needs space. Of course, it’s always wise to check-in with any dog owner before approaching his or her dog. 4) Reign in retractable leashes. What dog doesn’t love a longer leash? But in populated areas, long leashes equate to less control, making others nervous, and potentially leading to a negative interaction.
