Introduction to Typography Renee Robinson s2951483
The three novels that I have chosen to redisgn are ‘Carrie’, ‘Cujo’ and Misery’ by Stephen King. Although not originally intended as a series, their storylines do intermingle frequently.
The covers were then photographed and vectorised.
The typography I used for the covers of the novels was achieved by hand using ink, watercolour and paint.
These vectors were then edited using Photoshop, Illustrator and inDesign.
These are some variations of the book jackets that came about as I was creating my final design. Many of these were replaced with more effective versions.
The following are the final book jacket designs that I created for my novels.

Carrie White is the outsider of her class. She’s a mousy girl, all of her classmates hate her, and her mother is a religious fanatic who walks around in a black cape. After she unexpectedly has her first period, she is teased by the girls more ruthlessly than before. The gym teacher punishes the girls that were involved and one of them, Sue Snell, feels sorry for what she did and asks her boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom instead of her. But another girl that has been banned from the prom, Chris Hargenson, isn’t so forgiving and hatches an evil plan with her boyfriend that involves Carrie and a bucket full of pig’s blood. But what none of the students realize is that Carrie has the power of telekinesis, the power to move things with your mind, and that when you make her mad, she transforms from an innocent girl to a rage-filled monster. And this is gonna be a prom no one will ever forget.

Ever been scared of animals? Spiders? Snakes? Perfectly reasonable. How about dogs? No? Well you may have to rethink that......
Cujo is a two-hundred pound Saint Bernard, the best friend Brett Camber has ever had. Then Cujo chases a rabbit into a bolthole – a cave inhabited by some very sick bats. What happens next, how Cujo becomes a horrifying vortex, inexorably drawing in all the people around him, makes for one of Stephen King’s most terrifying, heart-stopping novels yet…

He was a Writer. She was his Number One Fan. She’d pulled him out of the car-wreck, brought him home, splinted and set his mangled legs. All he had to do in return was to write a very special book, just for her, all about her favourite heroine from his novels. One he’d killed off and now had to bring back to life. Because if he didn’t, if he was Bad and Didn’t Do What Nurse Told Him, she would be cross –very cross – and do things that would make him scream and scream.

Mouth-to-mouth, the woman had forced him back to life, pumping great sickly-sweet gusts of bad breath back into him. Sickly-sweet, she smiled down at him, pushing the painkillers into his dry mouth with her big, work-calloused fingers. Coyly, smiling, she pillow-plumped and nursery-talked and made sure he finished up every last little scrap.

Manifesto/Justification
The novels that I have redesigned are traditional horror novels, and as such I have eleccted to go towards design elements that remind me of horror. In the cover for ‘Carrie’, the blue, green tone of the dripping ink is the same colour that dired blood appears as when exposed under UV lights. The title itself is also writte in such a way that it resembels dripping blood. This is a direct reference to the novel, as the main character after whom the novel is named, is drenched in blood. In ‘Cujo’, the writing again resembles a blood spatter, or is perhaps reminiscient of froth. Both are a direct reference to the novel, as the main character is once again responsible for killing multiple people, resulting in blood spatter. Cujo is also rabid, hence the likeness to froth. In ‘Misery’, the main character is once again responsible for the shedding of blood, torturing the other main character, hence the likeness of blood dropds on the cover, and the bloody handprint visible in the bottom left hand corner of the page. This gives the impression of containment and the multiple attempts made by the captive to escape. The angular text I have utilised for the name of the author is also reminiscient of horror, with its sharp edges looking almost like the points of a knife. The covers are also predominantly black, again adding to the impression of concealment of hidden intentions and adding an almost sinister feel to the designs. All in all, the dark feel to these novels is, in my opinion, very effective in conveying the atmosphere of the genre in which they are based. There are no light, happy colours, no flowers and no upbeat, cursive text. The continuation of the blood theme, combined with the stark black and white that is present in some form on all of the book jackets, helps to tie them together as a series as well as creating visual sense of unity between the varying novels.
