Beautiful
St. Paul’s in the Jewellery Quarter
St. Paul’s is a beautiful church in a beautiful setting. It was built in 1779 and sits in Birmingham’s only remaining Georgian Square. The church has seen many changes in its history, from small family businesses, poor housing, exodus of residents and international takeovers to the move back into the city to live and the revival of local business.

two chapels of ease
As the population of Birmingham grew in the second half of the 18th century there was increasing pressure on space in the churches. An Act of Parliament in 1772 allowed for two Chapels of Ease to St. Martin’s to be built, of which St. Paul’s was one. It was to be built on land donated by Charles Colmore, a well-known local landowner of the time. The design by Roger Eykyn is based on St. Martin’sin-the-Fields in London. The church was built by subscriptions, fund raising was difficult and the steeple was initially omitted. The church was consecrated in 1779 and in 1791 a new east window was installed. It is unusual in that it is painted (strictly speaking enamelled as each piece was painted and then fired). It was painted by Francis Eginton in 1791 after a picture by Benjamin West and is a triptych depicting the Conversion of St. Paul; the left hand window shows the stoning of Stephen, the central one Paul’s Damascus Road encounter with Jesus and the right one Ananias praying over the blind Paul who then regains his sight.
points of interest
The church boasts a number of points of interest including its original Georgian box pews – lovely to look at, but a bit uncomfortable after a while! We also have a millennium window designed and made by Rachel Thomas which was sponsored by the Birmingham Assay Office and incorporates their hallmarks for gold, silver and platinum. The angels depicted in the window are pouring molten metal from a crucible and around its rim is the text: ‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding’ - Job 28.

Commemorating memorials
The Elkington family memorials emphasise St. Paul’s enduring connection with industry – the Elkingtons were connected with the early history of electroplating. A framed letter in the north-east corner of the church explains the American connection represented by the Stars and Stripes which overhangs the balcony edge. Other standards reflect the church’s connection with exservice and other associations. In the Sanctuary, to the left of the window, is the memorial to William Toy Young, the first Vicar of St. Paul’s. To the right of the window is the memorial to his successor Rann Kennedy. Above is the plaque commemorating the thirty-eight years as Vicar of Canon Ralph Stevens, a chaplain to Her Majesty the Queen.
west gallery wall
On the west gallery wall is the coat of arms of George III by the sculptor John Poole. It is carved in limewood in memory of Andrew Stevens (son of Canon Ralph Stevens) who died at the age of 15.
In Memory
Sculpture features
The first window on the south side is the Hollins memorial. The bust by the eminent Birmingham sculptor, Peter Hollins, is of his father William who was famous for both architecture and sculpture. Outside the church, near the east end, an obelisk marks the Hollins’ vault. The end window is a typical Victorian stained glass memorial, underneath is the plaque recording the incumbency for over twenty years of the Revd R. Burges. The velvet pews on the west wall were reserved for the family of the clergy and churchwardens.
steeple and bells As you leave the church through the main west doors you pass under the steeple which was added in 1823. In one of the steeple rooms the Victorian vicars of St. Paul’s held classes to teach the 3 ‘R’s. Prior to 2005 the tower contained three bells; the two smaller bells were installed in 1874 as quarter bells for the new clock. The larger bell was used as a service bell, and the present probably replaces a bell of similar size installed in 1823 (with the spire) or 1779 (when the church was completed). In 2005 a new peal of ten bells in the key of F sharp was placed in the tower as ‘the Voice of St. Paul’s and to mark the 250th anniversary of the St. Martin’s Guild of Church Bell Ringers.
Collaboration Opportunity Respect Excellence At City Academy, we pride ourselves on providing a great education to students from all backgrounds. Our school is centred on the values of collaboration, opportunity, respect and excellence and our ethos is focused on students first in everything.
The bells are hung in two tiers in a galvanised steel H-frame for the ringing peal; the upper tier contains the two largest bells plus an additional two dumb-bells for teaching purposes, the lightest eight hand in the lower tier.
Students at City Academy are supported to grow into academic, articulate, respectful and confident individuals. We encourage students to take risks and build the resilience they need to undertake new challenges.
Ringing takes place from the former clock chamber, behind the circular windows which form the clock dials.

Music VIVAT! CHOIR VIVAT! CHOIR are a mixed voice Birmingham-based choir who are the choir-in-residence at St. Paul’s Church and are also the official choir to West Midlands Police. They are based at St. Paul’s Church, Jewellery Quarter, and perform locally and abroad on a regular basis. They perform a broad repertoire and can be booked for weddings, funerals, birthday celebrations, drinks receptions, civic services and other events. Singers can be provided in small groups or as a large choir, and a pianist and organist can also be provided. The choir are also currently recruiting new singers to join them in 2018, in particular men’s voices. They do not hold auditions, and there is no requirement to sight-read music, although a basic ability to read music would be an advantage. With a tour of Belgium planned in May 2018 and a tour of New York planned for Autumn 2019 along with lots of other events and concerts in between, there has never been a more exciting time to join this friendly group of singers. Interested in hiring or joining VIVAT! CHOIR? Visit their website and send them a message! www.vivatchoir.co.uk
The Jewellery Quarter Why is the Jewellery Quarter here? The Jewellery Quarter evolved where it is today because manufacturers grasped the opportunity to expand when land became available. In the late 18th century land to the north-west of the town was sold off by the Colmore family. This came just at the point when the precious metalworking industry was beginning to flourish. Factories and houses of all sizes were built to accommodate manufacturers, their workers and self-employed skilled craftsmen. Supporting industries, such as tool makers and bullion dealers were also attracted to the area. Many specialist trades are involved in making a piece of jewellery including mount-makers, setters, polishers and engravers. They evolved into a close-knit community based on mutual benefit, and above all trust. Today the area is an urban village, made up of homes, shops and heritage sites. However jewellers and silversmiths also
continue to work from the same converted houses and factories that were originally built. For this reason it is thought to be unique in the world.
and contributed to the town’s rapid industrial growth.
Birmingham’s own Assay Office
Although known for jewellery a vast range of items has been made in the Quarter over the last 250 years.
Precious goods made from gold, silver and platinum are tested at an assay office and marked with a hallmark to guarantee their quality. In the late 18th century, the silver trade in Birmingham was booming, with manufacturers making buttons, buckles, spoons and small metal wares known as ‘toys’. In 1762 Matthew Boulton opened a successful manufactory in nearby Handsworth producing desirable silver items. With no local assay office, Boulton was forced to send his silver to Chester for hallmarking, risking damage and theft on the way. After two years of campaigning Boulton and other local silversmiths finally established an assay office in Birmingham in 1773. Following this the trade began to prosper
Made in the Jewellery Quarter
Raw materials such as precious metals, gemstones and mother of pearl were transformed into luxury goods. Coins and clocks, trophies and tableware were shipped to the four corners of the globe. In the 1850s more than half the steel nib pens manufactured in the world were Birmingham made. During the First and Second World Wars production was given over to the manufacture of munitions, medals and uniform badges. Today there are many professions located in the area including solicitors, architects and design and IT companies. However around 40 per cent of all jewellery produced in the UK is manufactured here.
