TOWN GOVERNMENT
Town of Wheatfield The Town of Wheatfield was founded in 1883 on land donated to the town by Simon and Mae Thompson. The first post office was opened a year prior to that in 1882. Wheatfield may have gotten its name from the wild rice or swamp grass that grew in the area, which was said to look like a field of wheat. The town was originally a railroad town with the Plymouth, Kankakee and Pacific railroad running through it. The railroad was used to ship wildlife caught by local hunters to the markets in Chicago area. The town is now known for its Sandhill Crane Festival, which features a car show, entertainment, food and crafts. Wheatfield Town Council Town Council meets the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Wheatfield Municipal Building.
