Wheatfi eld may have gotten its name from the wild rice or swamp grass that grew in the area, which was said to look like a fi eld of wheat. The town was originally a railroad town with the Plymouth, Kankakee and Pacifi c railroad running through it. The railroad was used to ship wildlife caught by local hunters to the markets in Chicago area.
The town is now known for its Sandhill Crane Festival, which features a car show, entertainment, food and crafts.
