Hunton & Williams LLP litigation and intellectual property partner Rita A. Sheffey has been appointed to the newly created position of Assistant Dean for Public Service at Emory University. Sheffey, who has worked for Hunton & Williams for more than 27 years and was named partner in 2004, spearheaded the development of the firm’s Pro Bono program, highlighted by her founding of the Southside Legal Center and countless other contributions. She will join Emory later this month.

The 300th Primrose School has opened in Brookhaven. Franchise owners Olivia and Jarrad Vaughn educated their own children at Primrose. The 13,000-square-foot, two-story school is poised to serve more than 180 local children and families and will eventually add approximately 40 full- and parttime jobs to the community.The school will offer Primrose’s Balanced Learning curriculum, which blends teacher-guided and child-initiated activities with a special emphasis on character development, for children 6 weeks to 6-years-old. The Afterschool Alliance presented the first Dollar General Afterschool Literacy Award to the Atlanta-based New American Pathways’ Bright Futures Afterschool Program . The program was honored for its success in building the literacy skills of middle school children. The Afterschool Alliance presented the award, made possible by the generous support of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, at its 14th annual Afterschool for All Challenge in Washington, D.C. Peter Epstein, Education and Youth Manager, and Mary Kathryn Tippett, Middle School Youth Coordinator of the Bright Futures Afterschool Program, and students Bishal Mager (eighth grade) and Paler Mar (sixth grade) accepted the award, including $10,000, on behalf of the program.

Eco, health event back at GWCC May 2-3

Alive! Expo returns for an 11th year to the Georgia World Congress Center in Downtown on May 2-3. The expo features natural and eco product companies plus health and wellness industry experts, fitness and cooking and fitness demonstrations, live health lectures and nearly 150 vendors.

“One of the most exciting aspects of producing this event year after year, is seeing more and more Atlantan’s growing interest in natural, organic and eco products for improving their health and lifestyle,” said Alive! Expo founder Patrycja Siewert-Towns.“With that continued growth, we’ve been able to attract some of the best and brightest brands and wellness leaders in their respective industries and expect for 2015 to be a greatly educational and fun event for the whole family.”

At the event, eco and natural product companies will interact with attendees by offering wellness advice and sampling plus selling their products. Guests will enjoy lectures by wellness experts, complimentary wellness treatments plus cooking and fitness demonstrations throughout the weekend. Additionally, many local and national wellness experts will be among guest speakers throughout the weekend.

Attendees are encouraged to bring canned food items to the event, which will be donated to the Atlanta Food Bank and Hosea Feed the Hungry; the organizations for which Alive! Expo collected over 30,000 pounds of food over the past years.

Hours for the expo are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 at the door or $5 in advance online at AliveExpo.com.
