City of Refuge held out a topping ceremony last month for The 1300: A Beloved Inspired Community. The 60,000-square-foot affordable housing community is currently under construction and slated for completion later this year. The new apartment community will serve local residents as well as students who are engaged in City of Refuge’s collection of vocational training programs.

Development partners and staff were on hand for lunch provided by Waffle House and to hear remarks from City of Refuge Founder Bruce Deel.

“City of Refuge is in the business of providing dignity to those who have experienced opportunity injustice throughout their lives. The 1300 will offer a sense of place for many who have never had somewhere to call ‘home,’” Deel said. “We look forward to the completion of the project this December and to welcoming residents to the beloved, inspired community in January 2020.”

Located directly across the street from City of Refuge at 1300 Mayson Turner Road NW, the 47unit community will be the first freestanding, off-site multifamily building the organization has opened. Upon completion, The 1300 will be comprised of a mix of two-bedroom-two-bath and three-bedroom-two-bath apartments ranging from 932 square feet to 1,153 square feet. Apartments will be divided into 12 market rate units and 35 affordable housing units.

North American Properties (NAP) is leading the development along with partners Dwell Design Studio, Tuckercraft, Inc., Summit Engineering Consultants, Inc., Crosby Design Group, United Consulting, Permit Consultants, Ltd, Russell Landscape Group, Gunnison Tree Specialists, Phillips Gradick Engineering, P.C., Davis & Church and Morrison Hershfield.

Since its founding 22 years ago, City of Refuge has been aiding the 30314 neighborhood, an area of Atlanta that accounts for more than 60 percent of the city’s murders. Through its collective impact approach, City of Refuge has helped transform more than 20,000 lives. In 2018 alone, the nonprofit housed 640 individuals; placed 365 students in jobs after graduating from various vocational training programs; and served 350,000 meals to those in need.
