From a Grateful Family

The recent restoration of the Sammis Field/Waterman Diamond by Armand Pereault (Rehoboth Reporter May 2021) may be looked upon by many as a good deed. While it certainly is that, I will share that it is much more. For it lies within the complexity of the ethos of marines; “SEMPER FIDELIS.” Armand gathered the resources, among which were Bob Choate and Kevin Cryan. Raised the funds necessary to add five new flag poles, restore the grounds, and employ future maintenance. Then put in the time to complete the work. President John F. Kennedy is quoted – “Every person can make a difference, and every person should try.” Armand Pereault; you made “a difference.” On behalf of a grateful family please accept our thanks and appreciation for what you have done. With Sincere Gratitude, Steven B Sammis

Rehoboth Ramblings by Leslie Patterson

Nature’s First Green

Every spring I’m amazed again at how quickly the landscape lively performance, but I realized that this was the first live music I changes to green once the trees leaf out. What a dramatic change had heard in over 14 months! of scenery! Yet I lament that spring flowers and blossoms just don’t With summer on the horizon, we thought we’d better do some last long enough. Our rhododendrons bloomed right on schedule in things that might be too crowded after Memorial Day and so we mid-May and just as reliably faded away within a couple of weeks. spent a Saturday in May visiting Watch Hill in Westerly. We even First the beautiful, bountiful deep pink blossoms turn light pink after found a parking spot and were able to walk to the lighthouse and a few days, then they indeed turn a whiter shade of pale, then they on East Beach for a while. Yes, we saw Taylor Swift’s not-so-humble droop and turn brown. abode; it’s hard to miss. But at least the mansions in Watch Hill Lilacs too lose their delicate fragrance and turn brown after their have a certain New England charm, unlike the mock Renaissance brief flourishing. I am reminded of Robert Frost’s short poem that palaces in Newport. I had forgotten how tiny Watch Hill is. This pretty much sums it up better than I can: “Nature’s first green is little seaside village must be impossibly crowded in the summer. I gold/ Her hardest hue to hold/ Her early leaf’s a flower/ But only so wonder what won’t be crowded this summer, with people making an hour/ Then leaf subsides to leaf/ So Eden sank to grief/ So dawn up for last year. Guess we’ll find out soon. goes down to day/ Nothing gold can stay.” But this is all to be expected and other flowers of summer will take pride of place soon. On a sadder note, one morning while walking the dog I found a dead river otter at the side of the road, much to my distress. Two or three otters had been making themselves at home in the pond this winter and we had greatly enjoyed their antics. At the time, I wondered how they managed to get from the river to the pond without getting hit by a car on our busy roads. Now I know; sometimes they don’t. If this is the outcome, I wish they would just stay put by the river away from traffic. It’s easy to see why people enjoy watching these swift, playful and graceful creatures. This poor otter appeared to be a juvenile and had apparently been knocked to the side of the road with one fatal blow, leaving its little body pretty much unmangled. So at least it went quickly. I looked at its sweet little face and decided to bring it home for a burial in the woods. It almost felt like losing a pet. On a much happier note, and speaking of animals, we enjoyed the Asian Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Zoo recently. This is a zoo-wide walk-through event, all outdoors. It is lit Wednesday through Sunday evenings from 5:30 until 10:00 pm. Last admission is at 9:00 pm. This is a temporary exhibit which will close on July 4. Note that all tickets must be purchased in advance on the zoo’s website, where you can see a video to get a better idea of this glowing extravaganza: https://www.rwpzoo.org/ It features over 50 “lanterns” which are inflated figures of animals lit from within. Most of these exhibits are larger, sometimes much larger, than real-life animals; for example, colorful ducks the size of boats can be seen floating on the zoo’s pond. A number of these lanterns represent animals Providing Orthodontic care in actually found at the zoo in real-life (but not, obviously, the dinosaurs). Donald was very informative about what we needed, and was a pleasure to work with. The system works very well, just as he said it would. So many things are much better with this system, too many to list! We hadn’t run our dishwasher in years, thinking we needed a new one, but now it works wonderfully! Ron S. - Rehoboth, MA

Less than a year after a catastrophic fire destroyed the Council on Aging, the town will assume ownership of Francis Farm, which will serve as the new gathering place for Rehoboth’s seniors. Voters at last month’s town meeting approved the purchase of the 47 acre property at a cost of $2.8 million. 34 acres will be preserved for open space. “Moving forward with this unique opportunity will preserve a generational legacy for the Town, conserve valuable open space, and provide an immediate solution for resuming and expanding services to our senior population”, Selectmen Chairman Skip Vadnais said last April. Primary funding for the purchase and upgrades to existing facilities will come from insurance proceeds. Voters also approved $995,000 to purchase the land and building located at 340 Anawan Street to serve as the Town Office Building. Former selectman Gerry Schwall, who is now serving as a project manager, said the closing would be in late July. The 11,000 square foot facility “will present an image this town can be proud of,” Schwall noted, adding the building can be easily expanded as the town grows and the need to provide additional services increases. The purchase price is approximately one-third of the $2.8 million estimated cost to repair and renovate the existing Town Hall. The estimates to construct a new facility were $6.5 - $7 million. Selectmen insisted the purchase of this property and building will not raise real estate taxes. The funding for this project will come from budget savings, reoccurring revenue from the solar and marijuana projects, and state and federal grants.

DR School Business Manager Resigns

By Joe Siegel Paul Kitchen, who has served as Business Manager for the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District for the last two years, recently submitted a letter of resignation. Kitchen’s last day is July 16. “He has served in his role with the utmost professionalism and he will truly be missed,” Dighton-Rehoboth School Superintendent Anthony Azar said Wednesday. Assistant Superintendent Joe Pirraglia said Kitchen was “a wealth of knowledge.” “(Kitchen) has been super supportive to me personally,” Pirraglia noted. “We wish him the best of luck going forward.” School committee chairman Aaron Morse said Kitchen had also served as a facilities manager and assisted with the installation of the HVAC systems in the schools. “It came in handy this past year,” Morse explained. “We’ll just always be grateful for everything he did for the district to get things going this year.” “(Kitchen’s) information, his knowledge, his background was invaluable,” added committee member Eliza Couture. Kitchen previously worked for the Fairhaven school department, the FreetownLakeville school district and at the Fall River schools. He has a master’s degree in finance and also holds a law degree.

Town employees who have not been vaccinated will be required to wear a mask or face covering. Vaccinated employees will be allowed to go maskless. The Board of Selectmen approved the ir onditioning policy 3-2 on Monday. Members of the public who have not been vaccinated will be required to wear masks as well. Those who have been vaccinated can go maskless if they choose. Chairman Skip Vadnais, Jim Muri, and George Solas voted yes, & operated for over 40 years with Dave Perry and Michael Deignan in opposition. Solas said seeing town employees wearing masks would give him “a sense of protection.” “People need to take some personal responsibility for their actions and choices in life,” said Deignan, who revealed he has not been vaccinated. Town Hall will be reopening to the public after the state of is lifted by Governor Charlie Baker. However, there NEW LOCATION... SAME GREATemergency SERVICE will be modifications made to the building in an effort to protect public health and to provide greater security to individual departments. The lobby area will be turned into a vestibule. Everything will be paid for with CARES funding. Vadnais said no decisions have been made about reopening other town buildings. The board has not yet decided on meeting requirements for town boards and committees. Former selectman Gerry Schwall told the board that 46 percent of the town’s population has received at least one vaccine dose. 36 percent have been fully vaccinated. Schwall said vaccinations for residents between the ages of 20 through 49 were “lagging significantly.” The town’s vaccination clinic at Anawan Pharmacy is still operational, according to Schwall. The town has seen an uptick in new Covid infections. 26 positive cases were reported in the two week period ending May 18. Rehoboth is now classified as yellow. The daily positivity rate was 4.08 percent. Schwall explained once the state’s mask mandate expires at the end of the month, there will be a spike in new Covid infections among the younger population. “You’re going to have this ebb and flow of the cases,” Schwall said. “My recommendation to the board is to proceed cautiously.”

Dog Licenses Were Due April 1, 2021 60-Day Grace Period is Ending

All dog licenses were due and payable by April 1st. After a 60day grace period, delinquent dog owners will be assessed a $15.00 late fee, per dog, for any licenses that have not been renewed by June 1st. To date we still have 566 dogs that remain unlicensed. Lynn, Odete and I have really tried to help the dog owners remember to register their dogs before we were required to charge late fees. We mailed a renewal form in the January census with a return envelope, we sent out reminder postcards in March and a reminder letter in May. We even implemented an online payment service so dog owners could renew online if their dogs are current with their rabies vaccinations. In addition, a press release was sent to the local newspapers in April, and the town website has also publicized the deadlines under “News and Announcements”, we e-mailed all residents who signed up for e-mail notifications that the June 1st deadline was approaching. We also had a message displaying on the “Bulletin Board” scroll on Cable Channel 9 at RehobothTV.org. If you are one of the 566 dog owners who still need to register their dogs, unfortunately you will be assessed an additional $15.00 per unlicensed dog if the license is not renewed by June 1. We are truly sorry for the added expense; however, it is required by Massachusetts General Law and our Town Bylaws and it is unfair to those who registered within the prescribed timeframe if we don’t assess the late fee. Please register your dog before the next deadline (July 15, 2021) to avoid an additional $25.00 late fee and a non-criminal citation. Please renew your dog licenses as soon as you are able ~ thank you. To date we registered 1,692 dogs and still have 566 to register. Remember, in addition to being a legal requirement, registering your dog assures the prevention of rabies in our community, and provides easy identification to reunite lost dogs with their owners because they are now in our database. Reminder to those residents 70 years of age or older . . . if over 70 years old, as per MGL 140§139(c) and town meeting vote, the Clerk’s Office will waive the $10/$20 license fee; however, you must still apply for the license and show the current year rabies certificate.

Congratulations All 2021 Graduates

Seekonk Preps for Outdoor Dining Extension

By Joe Siegel Seekonk selectmen are encouraging restaurants to apply for outdoor licenses after Governor Charlie Baker lifts the state of emergency on June 15. Chairman Justin Sullivan explained Baker has proposed legislation, which is likely to be approved by the state legislature, which will extend outdoor dining through November 29. “We have restaurants here in town which are utilizing their parking lots and walkways,” Sullivan said Wednesday. “I think it’s probably in our best interest from the town side, once we get all the guidelines from the state, we take a pro-active approach to all the on premise accounts if they wish to have the board of selectmen reconsider their license to permanently include an outdoor seating license as well, that they initiate that process so that we could consider it on a case by case basis.” “Some of these businesses spent a lot of money to make ends meet,” said selectman Michael Healy, who wanted to start the process of establishments applying for the outdoor licenses sooner rather than later. “In some cases, parking might be an issue and I think case by case, we need to look at it,” Healy added. The state has put out a fact sheet for restaurants offering outdoor dining/seating: https://www.mass.gov/doc/outdoor-dining-factsheet/download.

BSA Scouts Still Pitching in for Doorways

The McShane brothers of Seekonk BSA Troop 1 have volunteered throughout the pandemic, along with their fellow scouts from BSA Troops 1 & 9. Here they stand, with their mom, ready to assist curbside. Over the past year, as Doorways Food Pantry has struggled to reinvent itself as a contactless food distribution, one of the few constants has been the unwavering support of BSA Troops 1 and 9, who volunteered from the very beginning of the pandemic to assist with curbside, “pop your trunk” distributions of prepacked bags of non-perishable essential grocery items. “This was very big for us”, said Paul Hodge, one of Doorways’ curbside coordinators. “We were cut off from our volunteer base at the very beginning, and the scouts stepped in to fill a void, twice a month, without fail. It was very helpful.” Doorways would like to thank not only the scouts, but the many people in town who have dropped off food donations, or mailed a check, or run a food drive. “We don’t make it all the way through the pandemic without a lot of help” said Hodge. “God bless all of you who helped this past year.”

Town of Seekonk to Auction 32 Properties

The Town of Seekonk will hold a real estate auction of 32 properties on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 12:00 P.M. at the Seekonk Senior Center, 540 Arcade Avenue, Seekonk, MA. The live auction, conducted by The Zekos Group, Municipal Auction Strategies will feature a wide variety of land parcels ranging in size from 1/10 of an acre to over 13 acres. The auction will provide an opportunity for local residents and investors. Zekos Group President, Paul T. Zekos said, “We are pleased to have been retained by the Town of Seekonk to offer these properties to the highest bidder in an open and public process.” Town officials are looking forward to the one-time revenue the auction will generate and getting properties back on the tax rolls. Many properties will be ideal for abutters to purchase and expand their existing parcel. Prospective bidders will be required to present positive identification and a deposit in the form of a bank check (treasurer’s, cashier’s, or certified) to qualify to bid. Interested parties are urged to research the properties and contact The Zekos Group at 508-842-9000 or visit their website at www.zekosgroup.com for detailed information.

Earth Day Activities in April

Although the pandemic has put a damper on Earth Day activities by groups, there were those who chose to continue the clean-up traditions and we commend them for their determination. Members of the Ten Mile River Watershed Council, Land Trust, and Scout Troop 1 Seekonk, collected litter and debris in the areas of the Runnins River, Martin Conservation Area and Gammino Pond. We also had a few family groups collecting litter near Chestnut Street, Hull and Milton Streets, Jacob Street, Cole Street and near Martin School. Thank you for all those who participated.

I wish to thank the volunteer members of the Recycling Committee and the town Department of Public Works for making our document shredding event at Seekonk Town Hall a success. We may consider sponsoring another such event in the near future. Bill Kirchmann - Recycling Coordinator

Town of Seekonk Awarded $750K in Cleanup Funding for Former Attleboro Dye Works Site

Federal & State Partners Committed to Working with Town in Revitalizing Brownfields Site

Imagine driving by the Ten Mile River and seeing it reflecting back a bright pink or purple! While that may sound shocking to us today, many lifelong Seekonk residents recall this as a regular occurrence and have even shared stories of swimming in the river and coming out with a colorful tinge to their skin as a result of the textiles being dyed at the Attleboro Dye Works site upstream. Like many communities in New England, the Industrial Revolution left a legacy of contamination along Seekonk’s rivers that we are faced with mitigating today. Nestled in a residential neighborhood, the 7.8-acre former Attleboro Dye Works Site (ADW), includes a firedamaged, collapsing 101,000 SF abandoned industrial building, which for over 60 years, conducted dyeing processes that used dye fixing agents and waste dye carriers as well as mixed, transferred and stored metals, solvents and petroleum hydrocarbon compounds. The wastewater was then discharged to three, large unlined wastewater lagoons located on-site. Lagoon sediments are contaminated with heavy metals, PCBs, chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These contaminants pose a threat to public health as well as the surrounding sensitive riparian corridor. However, over the last five years, the Town, its partner agencies, and key stakeholders have made great strides at the site. In 2016, the Town worked with the EPA to perform a limited removal action of containerized hazardous materials. The following year, the Town was successful in securing $450K grants from both the MassDevelopment and U.S. EPA Brownfields programs to complete assessment activities over the last three years. In 2019, the Town pursued a tax-taking of the abandoned site to facilitate cleanup efforts. And now the Town has been awarded an additional $750K in grant funding from state and federal partners to remediate all three contaminated wastewater lagoons, moving the Town one step closer toward site development and revitalization of the Baker’s Corner neighborhood.

“Knowing the competitive nature of the EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grant selection process, the Town of Seekonk is honored to be amongst a handful of communities across New England selected for an award this year. As anybody involved in the cleanup of these former industrial sites will tell you, it takes a determined and dedicated team effort with local, state, and federal partners to see these projects through each stage of the process. Our team has given the former Attleboro Dye Works site a voice at every step along the way, telling the compelling story of its industrial past and how critical its redevelopment is to revitalizing the Baker’s Corner neighborhood. In that vein, we’d like to thank our team, especially the U.S. EPA and MassDevelopment Brownfields programs, for their continued investment and support in the former Attleboro Dye Works site.” said Town Administrator Shawn Cadime. For additional information about this project, please contact Jennifer Miller, Conservation Agent: jmiller@seekonk-ma.gov or (508) 336-2944.

Hornbine School Museum Rehoboth, Ma

Engaged? Just Married? Have a new bundle of joy? Let everyone know for FREE! Send your announcements to news@eastprovreporter.com. Visit our website to share at: www.reportertoday.com.

The Hornbine School Museum will be closed in June. We hope to open on the 2 nd and 4 th Sundays in July from 2pm – 4 pm. Don’t forget to “LIKE” and/or FOLLOW” us on Facebook (Hornbine School Museum). Find Hornbine School information at our website which is https://hornbineschool.tripod.com/ Mr. Alfred Almeada appears in a video on October 3, 2020 on our Facebook Page (Hornbine School Museum). His dad was one of eleven children who attended The Hornbine School in the 20s and 30s. His grandfather came from the Asores and bought a ninety – nine acer farm at 91 Spring Street in Rehoboth. The Almeada’s home was torn down to make way for modern homes about 20 years ago. (Picture #1) A few hundred yards down from the Almeada’s old homestead, is the Cole Brook Cemetery. Just to the right of the cemetery, is Old Spring Street. We were told by a resident on Old Spring St. that his father told him he thought the original district 10 school, which preceded the Hornbine School, was on the left about a third of the way down towards the house seen in picture #2. When this school closed around 1845 - 46, the children in the area attended the new district 10 school located on Hornbine Road. Today, we call the newer school building the Hornbine School. Although it is not known when the Cole Brook School was built, it is probable that it was built around the turn of the century. There were many interesting events that took place here in Rehoboth and the country while the school was in use. The children’s teacher may have learned about these events by reading newspapers or possibly a journal or even by word of mouth! The following is a sampling: • In 1810 the U.S. Population was only 7,239,881 • 1814 British soldiers burn the White House and other government buildings. Francis Scott Key writes “The Star-Spangled Banner” • 1818 The thirteen stars and stripes configuration of the U.S. flag is officially adopted by Congress • 1819 The first installment of Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle appears • 1820, The Nantucket, MA, whaling ship Essex sinks after being attacked by a sperm whale. The event inspires Herman Melville’s 1851 novel, Moby Dick. • 1821 Spain ceded Florida to the United States • 1825 The Erie Canal opened • 1826 Thomas Jefferson and John Adams die on July 4 th, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Samuel Morey patents the internal combustion engine (named the “Gas or Vapor Engine) • 1827 The first Rail Road opened in the U.S. (The Attleboro line opened shortly after that.) • 1829 The first Rehoboth post office came into existence. The Taunton/Providence Turnpike, a toll road (Rte. 44) was built at a cost of about $1,000 a mile. This road ran straight and bypassed the village, which did not go well with the local inhabitants. • 1831 The Orleans Mill was totally destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt of stone the following year. • 1832 A former Rehoboth farm boy, Samuel Willard Bridgham, became the first Mayor of Providence, RI. • 1835 P.T. Barnham started his first US tour • 1836 Davey Crocket and others were defeated at the battle of the Alamo • 1838 The “Trail of Tears”, which resulted in an estimated 4,000 - 8,000 Cherokee Indian death, took place • 1839 Rehoboth was assessed $800 to pay for 22 School districts. The town school districts were situated so that most children did not have to walk longer than three miles to attend. • 1840 Captain Wiles claimed Antarctica for the U.S. The population of the United States was 17,069,453. The total population included 2,487,355 slaves.

June 2021 The Reporter • 1842 The border between Canada and the U.S. was settled • 1844 The first telegraph message was sent. • In 1846, when the present Hornbine School (district 10) was under construction, a portion of the toll road (Rte. 44) was opened as a free road.

Day on August 8 from noon to 4 p.m. at Squantum Association, 947 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Riverside. The afternoon celebration is free and will feature presentations, displays, food and lawn games. Finally, from August 30 to September 13, the photo and art winning entries will be part of a 150th anniversary exhibit of the Lighthouse in the glass cases at East Providence City Hall, 145 Taunton Avenue, East Providence. Seekonk resident, Thomas Duffy, was recognized for Honorable Mention in the photography category for his photo of Pomham Lighthouse at Sunset. Located on an island off the coast of East Providence, Pomham Rocks Lighthouse is the last surviving lighthouse in upper Narragansett Bay. The Lighthouse was built in 1871 and served as a navigational aid to the brisk shipping traffic in the Providence River until the Coast Guard decommissioned it in 1974. Since 2004, the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse have made it their mission to protect and preserve this landmark that is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Rehoboth 8th Grader Goes Big For Doorways Ryan Moitoso of Rehoboth, an 8th grade student at St. Luke’s in Barrington, decided to take a stand against the chaos and hardship brought on by the coronavirus. Ryan organized his own food collection and collected dozens of non-perishable food items to be donated to the Doorways food pantry. “Every weekend, as we run our food pantry out of the parking lot at the old North School, we see cars pull up and pop their trunks to deliver donations large and small” says Evan Rehoboth 8th Grader Ryan Moitoso Fasteson of Doorways. “It’s really incredible” agrees Tim Breen, another Doorways volunteer. “Most of the donors prefer to remain anonymous, and many of them offer good wishes for the success of the Doorways mission. We get really great community support.” Last week, one of our donors was Ryan Moitoso, an eighth grader from Rehoboth who made the donation in honor of a friend who has volunteered at Doorways. In spite of all the grim news we have seen in the past year, here is the good news: young people care. They work to make the world a better place. God bless them.

Unlikely Strummers, a local Award-Winning Amateur Ukulele Band, Working to Raise Spirits

The Unlikely Strummers, a local award-winning amateur ukulele band, has been working to raise spirits in the community over the past 14 weeks with musical parodies of The Muppets’ classic song “Movin’ Right Along.” Each weekend, over a dozen members of the group videotape performances of a new original verse with an iconic or unusual mode of transportation, and the video is posted on social media, to the delight of their fans and other community members. In recent weeks, the group has partnered with both the Seekonk Grand Prix and Remembrance Hill Carriages in Rehoboth for videos that have been a real pick-me-up for all concerned, while also highlighting local businesses. In both cases, the group stayed to enjoy the venues, racing around the go-kart track at the Grand Prix and enjoying a peaceful wagon ride at Remembrance Hill. An earlier video also featured a special cameo appearance by alpacas from Rehoboth’s Kave Rock Farm. Other verses, penned by the group’s members, have featured some celebrated vehicles such as the Phone Car (featured on Chronicle), the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile, and the Planters NutMobile, as well as the Roger Williams Park Carousel Village train. Staff at the Roger Williams Zoo related that they were “captivated by [the group’s] talent and whimsy.”

SMOOTH SAILING! Safe Harbor

Most recently, the group boarded the Jaguar - the tugboat responsible for escorting the Mayflower II for nearly 40 years - singing about ukulele adventures on the rolling seas. The “Movin’ Right Along” project originated as a way for the group to raise morale in the community during the long winter months of the pandemic, and has also provided its members a safe, creative way to make music together outdoors (even in a kayak on a frozen lake in February) while continuing to take precautions. The full series of videos can be found on their YouTube playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgR6nm-7RIUZxaPy22E4RVovLFz_LtUCp

A Fishing Derby catch!

June 2021 The Reporter After a long bout of cancellations and delays over the past few years due to bad weather, EEE, and COVID-19 restrictions, Pack 1 Rehoboth was finally able to return to camping! From May 14th to May 16th, scouts from Pack 1 had a great time at the Maple Park Campground in East Warren, MA. With all the Scout campgrounds closed due to COVID, they sought an alternative location and enjoyed many fun activities, such as participation in a flag ceremony, a fishing derby, and making tie dye shirts. The families had a perfect weekend with great weather and were also able to enjoy paddle boats, swimming and kayaking on the lake. The traditional campfire program held on Saturday night consisted of the scouts telling jokes, performing skits with their dens, and making smores. Not to be overlooked, the scouts also worked on essential outdoor skills, such as selecting tent locations, setting up the tents, and assisting with camp cooking and fire building. Overall, Pack 1 families had a great time and are looking forward to the next weekend camping trip in the fall. This camping trip marked the return to normalcy for Pack 1 and we look forward to a fantastic year full of great activities! For more information on Pack 1 Rehoboth, including how to join us, email pack1rehoboth@ gmail.com.

A note from the Director:

What a year it has been! We as a community have been through so much this past year. First and foremost, for anyone who has been impacted by COVID, our hearts go out to you. A lot has changed in this last year, but we have so much to look forward to. While we have been available for social services throughout the COVID pandemic, we opened up for outdoor activities in May. With that being said, we are happy to announce that we will be opening up for indoor activities starting in June! We will be introducing our indoor activities slow and steady. Programs will have limited participants and may require preregistration and/or residency restrictions. Programs will follow strict schedules to allow us sufficient time to sanitize and clean before the next program. Health and safety is our main priority. We will do everything in our power to make sure everything is safe for all participants. We have been and will continue to work with the Health Department to ensure we are following all the proper protocols and guidelines. Be sure to check in with us via phone, Facebook, the Town website and/or our newsletter to find out about the latest procedures and protocols. We have added numerous hand sanitizing stations, Plexiglas barriers, a new check in procedure and sanitize continuously throughout the day. The staff and I will continue to make all the necessary changes to keep our building a safe environment for all. With all of that being said, we have missed you! We have missed seeing our regulars in our building every day. We are ecstatic to finally welcome you all back! We are excited and hopeful that we will also be welcoming new participants to our amazing center! Hope to see you all soon! - Brittney

Seekonk Veterans Services Chapter 115 Benefits

In an article last June I covered a number of benefits that are available to Veterans, many of which are unique to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I wanted to look back at the Chapter 115 program as the maximum income and asset levels allowed have changed, and very significantly in regard to assets. Under Chapter 115 of Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. ch. 115), the Commonwealth provides a uniform program of financial and medical assistance for indigent Veterans and their dependents. Qualifying Veterans and their dependents receive necessary financial assistance for food, shelter, clothing, housing supplies, and medical care in accordance with a formula, which takes into account the number of dependents and income from all sources. Eligible dependents of deceased Veterans are provided with the same benefits as they would were the veteran still living. Note: many benefits are not available to the spouse once the Veterans passes. This benefit is available to the surviving spouse, unless they remarry. Once the new fiscal year starts (July 1, 2022), income limits for Chapter 115 will be $2,147 for single applicants & $2,904 if married (which is a slight increase due to cost of living increases). The liquid asset limit will be $8,400 for single applicants and $16,600 if married. That is a big jump, currently the asset limit is just $5,000/$9,800, so those who had previously been over assets for the program may now be able to apply. For retired Veterans, social security and pensions are counted as income. The stimulus money received for COVID-19 is not included as income or an asset. For employable Veterans during the pandemic, if you run out of unemployment benefits, Chapter 115 may well be a viable solution until you are able to get back to work. Please contact me with any questions you may have pertaining to Chapter 115 benefits. SCHOOL NEWS Dighton-Rehoboth Seniors Look to the Future By Joe Siegel

When Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School’s 2021 senior class graduates on June 5, Valedictorian Bella DeCilio and Salutatorian Christopher Pike will be looking ahead to a brighter future after a tumultuous year. “I always try my best in my classes so it was a nice surprise to be named Valedictorian,” DeCilio said. “I’m really excited to move on and go to college.” DeCilio will be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where she plans to major in chemistry. “I got a lot of positive support from a lot of my friends,” Pike recalled. “For the most part, my friends made it into the top ten so we were all there supporting each other.” Pike will be attending Northeastern University. He plans to study mechanical engineering.

While at D-R, DeCelio was a member of the Marching Band, the theater company known as the International Thespian Society, and the National Honors Society. Pike was also a member of the Marching Band and the National Honors Society. He belonged to the Boy Scouts, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and played in the Bristol County Valedictorian Fife and Drum Corps. Bella DeCilio DeCilio and Pike believe their time at Dighton-Rehoboth had an impact on their personalities. “I’ve definitely become more confident and I’ve put more effort into my classes,” DeCilio said. “I’ve met a lot of great friends here and I found my passions through a lot of the activities I do.” Pike said he became “a lot more responsible and learned about time management.” Dealing with Covid and distance learning was a big challenge for the two seniors. “It was a struggle for everyone Salutatorian in our class because all the events that Christopher Pike we had planned were cancelled and postponed, DeCilio noted. “Distance learning is definitely hard too. It’s not the same as learning in a classroom.” DeCilio advises next year’s seniors to work hard and take chances. “Put effort into your classes, keep trying new things, do them so you can get that experience.” Pike instructs seniors to “manage your time and finish assignments early.” Decilio and Pike are looking forward to graduation and taking a break from learning for a few months. “I’m happy to be done and happy to be moving on to bigger and better things,” Pike added.

Gazing at the wonder of the butterfly and then releasing it. April and May are months of renewal and rebirth of the Earth. Our fifth graders here at Beckwith have had the opportunity to see just this with some little critters. For the last three weeks we have been watching the wonderful transformation of the caterpillars into butterflies. Here are a few pictures of the fifth graders letting them go to live their life and pollinate our sleepy earth!

Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School Students Selected as Finalists in NASA HUNCH Program

Students collaborate on out-of-this-world issues facing NASA and create viable solutions The Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School District is pleased to announce all six teams that participated in this year’s NASA HUNCH Program were selected as semi-finalists. The NASA HUNCH Program asks vocational students to help solve problems facing astronauts. Each year a set of approximately ten issues are presented in September. Students select the issue they would like to work on and form teams. All juniors in the Engineering Program participate. (www.hunchdesign.com) The students in the NASA HUNCH Program work with mentors, college professors, national companies, engineers from NASA, and other organizations to help hone their ideas. In addition, each student is encouraged to include their work with NASA on their resume. The students’ fresh perspective, time, and energy assists the Research and Integration Office out of the Johnson Space Center.

Matt Gorton (Seekonk), John Greener (North Attleboro), Rick Hamilton (North Attleboro), Emily Anne Matheson (Medway), Tyler Fiore (North Attleboro), Shriya Sivakumar (Seekonk), and Kyle Hughes (North Attleboro) created a No Heat Shield, allowing a package to reenter the atmosphere without burning up safely. In addition, this team was able to work with a local fire department to drop test their prototypes from the top of a fire truck ladder and got licensed as HAM radio operators to test their radio transmitter. The teams presented their projects to NASA in late April. Next steps include one team developing their idea or blending ideas to create a solution. Through the HUNCH Program, Tri-County designed hardware for storage lockers used in space by the Advanced Manufacturing students.

Senior Prom Goes On!

The title is available digitally through Overdrive, or you may pick RI Reg. # 33335 / MA Reg. # CS51340 up a print copy at the library. “Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show Residential / Commercial began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle. Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist.” -- from Amazon. Raiders Baseball

After a turbulent school year, Beckwith and the other school’s in the Massasoit league were able to get in a full baseball season! Despite missing a year, the 8th grade group of boys came in as both strong players and leaders. The year started off positive with a great win at home against Case Middle School, but the momentum didn’t carry too much further. The Raiders would play a number of close games throughout the season picking up additional wins against Seekonk, Berkley and Bridgewater, but did not manage to have a winning season, despite having a number of great games. The boys were most often led by the battery of Raider veterans, Ben Miller and Brennan Silva with standout performances also coming from Gavin Salera, Ben Cote, Charlie Roth, Ace Fortin, Aidan Melo and Shane Baker. The outfield, led by Aidan Melo, Talon Botelho and Shane Baker was a consistent defensive force throughout the season, while the infield, often led by the long stretch of Gavin Salera at first, made some fantastic plays throughout the duration of the season. The seventh graders on the squad brought fantastic energy and gained experience for when they become leaders in the season to come. While the record was far from perfect, Coach Brideau and Coach Francese couldn’t have asked for a better group of kids to make the end of this irregular year something special. Thank you to all the players, the Beckwith community and most importantly the parents for making it a special season for our deserving students. Roster: Shane Baker*, Talon Botelho*, Ben Cote*, James Dias, Ace Fortin*, Josh Hoskins, Garrett Inman, Will Labrie, Aidan Melo*, Ben Miller*, Nathan Rioux, Charlie Roth*, Gavin Salera*, Brennan Silva*, Gavin Smith. Coaches: Mr. Brideau and Mr. Francese. *8th Graders

The 2021 Raiders Softball Team is excited to be on the fields. These girls have worked hard and show Beckwith Pride every time they are on the field: Victoria D’Aiello, Hannah DeSilva, Tayla Duarte, Maggie Kazanjian, Riley Kazanjian, Haleigh Kelley, Molly LaBrie, Sara Marsella, Gia Papa, Mylee Ramer, Isabella Silva, Madelyn Simonds, and Jaiden Weremay. Through her coaching, Pellerin has promoted community service, sportsmanship, teamwork and positivity while serving as a model for how to combine competitive performance with character development. Dining Guide • 4 Batavia lettuce leaves • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped • 1 Persian cucumber, sliced Remove steak from packaging and set aside 10 minutes. Once steak reaches room temperature, place steak in deep plate or storage container. In small bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, fish sauce, garlic, 1 teaspoon rice vinegar and five-spice powder; pour over steak. Cover and marinate in fridge at least 2 hours, or overnight. In small pot over medium heat, heat remaining rice vinegar, sugar and salt. Cook and stir until sugar and salt dissolve. Remove from heat and let cool. Place carrots in deep plate or storage container. Pour cooled pickling liquid over carrots. Set aside to marinate. Remove steak from marinade and pat dry. Reserve marinade. Heat oven to 325 F. Heat heavy-bottomed pan over high heat and add oil. Once oil begins to smoke, add steak. Sear both sides, about 1 minute per side. Lower heat to medium. Add reserved marinade and water to pan. Cook, covered, 3

minutes, removing lid to flip meat occasionally. Remove lid and let sauce reduce 1 minute, or until slightly thickened. Transfer steak and sauce to large plate and let rest 10 minutes before slicing. Toast baguettes in oven 5 minutes. Let cool 5-10 minutes. Slice baguettes along middle without cutting through. Slice steak into thin pieces. Spread mayonnaise on baguettes and add 1-2 lettuce leaves to each. Layer steak on lettuce leaves followed by cilantro, cucumbers and pickled carrots. Slice baguette into two sandwiches.

Go for Satisfying Summer Greens

Many summer meals start with a simple yet satisfying appetizer: salad. This year, make sure you set the table with a bright, delightful bowl of greens that sets the tone for an enjoyable and festive meal with loved ones. This Apple, Strawberry, Blueberry Salad calls for an array of fruits, including a homemade blueberry dressing, paired with Fresh Express 5-Lettuce Mix for a fresh and flavorful base with pecan halves to add crunch. The salads are thoroughly washed, rinsed and gently dried then sealed in Keep-Crisp bags to maintain freshness. Find more salad inspiration at freshexpress.com.

Diana Humphrey Diana Humphrey passed peacefully into heaven on April 29, 2021, at the age of 75 years. Her selfless nature will be missed by many - for the love she gave freely and for her many acts of kindness. She was known by family and close friends as DiDi, Mom, Nana, Cousin Diana, Mrs. Humphrey, Mama Humps, and (simply) Ma. She was a reserved woman who lived a quiet life. However, she was also a strong and independent woman, a faithful wife, a kind and loving mother, and a devout stewardship-driven Catholic. Diana Humphrey Those she worked with knew her as an office manager at Process Automation for nearly 20 years, or as a bookkeeper in the years thereafter. Twenty-one years ago, Diana was given a second chance at life when she received a heart transplant at New England Medical Center (now Tufts) in Boston. Diana’s faith helped her through illness for 12 years and the heart transplant was her miracle. Diana was so grateful for the gift, which she received from an unknown donor, that she raised funds and participated in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk in order to help provide the same opportunity for others. She also participated in the heart transplant support group, working with people either awaiting a new heart or those who had recently received one. Diana was the daughter of Thomas and Bertha Grady. She was raised in Providence, Rhode Island, was a student at Saint Raymond School, and was a 1963 graduate of Saint Francis Xavier Academy in Providence, Rhode Island. Diana and her husband, Alan R. Humphrey (1943-2017), resided in Seekonk, Massachusetts for over 50 years. She is survived by her sister, Carol Grady; her children and their families Jennifer and William McCaughey, Russell and Lisa Humphrey, Jessica Victorelli and Scott Rachal, Jodie Humphrey and Peter Figueiredo, and Dustin and Jaclyn Humphrey; her godchild, Lisa Cardello; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; aunts; cousins; nieces and nephews; and her faithful dog Emma-Lou. Diana’s second family consisted of her fellow parishioners. She was an integral member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel church in Seekonk, Massachusetts since the 1960s. She was an active participant in the prayer group, teacher in the catechism program, and contributed countless hours of volunteer work for the parish. In 2016, Diana received a Marian Award from the Fall River diocese for her dedicated service to the Catholic faith, her church, and the diocese. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel (984 Taunton Avenue; Seekonk, MA 02771) on Friday, June 11 at 10:00 AM. Receiving will take place immediately after the ceremony and will be followed by the interment of her cremated remains at the Town of Seekonk Cemetery. Diana had the opportunity to meet and to love many of her grandchildren, which would never have been possible without her heart transplant. From the State House State Senator Paul R. Feeney Announces Passage of the Fiscal Year 2022 Senate Budget and the Adoption of Over $500,000 in Amendments Supporting the Bristol & Norfolk Districts

“I firmly believe that the state budget represents our collective values as a Commonwealth” Boston, MA – Senator Paul R. Feeney (D-Foxborough) announced the successful passage of a host of amendments he filed during the recent Senate Budget Debate for the upcoming Fiscal Year 2022 spending package. This budget year was unlike any other. As the Commonwealth and the country strive to Build Back Better from the COVID-19 pandemic, the FY2022 Budget agreed upon by the Massachusetts Senate maintains fiscal responsibility and recommends targeted investments to address emerging needs, safeguard the health and wellness of our most vulnerable populations and ensure our residents can benefit equitably as we recover from the lasting impacts of the pandemic. “The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the many areas where we need to improve our services as a society. I am proud that this budget maintains the fiscal health of the Commonwealth while investing and supporting our residents who need it the most,” stated Senator Feeney. Senator Feeney filed budget amendments which span a range of policy areas, including arts and culture, food insecurity, homelessness and human services, outdoor recreation, mental and behavioral health, as well as funding for local capital improvements. Throughout three long days of debate that each stretched late into the evening, Feeney was successful in passing a majority of his amendments to the spending bill representing both local and statewide spending priorities. The Senate’s version of the FY2022 Budget, including Feeney’s priorities, was adopted Thursday night by a 40 - 0 vote. Senator Feeney successfully secured over $500,000 for local initiatives in the Bristol & Norfolk District and $3.3 million in total funding.

Fy22 Budget

“I am extremely proud of this year’s Senate budget,” said Senator Feeney. “Not only is it a bold, balanced, fiscally responsible and well-rounded statement of our values, this budget takes great steps in addressing critical needs in the Commonwealth. It recognizes the importance of substantial and meaningful investments in education, healthcare, housing and substance abuse treatment. Additionally, the annual budget debate gives me an opportunity to advocate strongly on behalf of the people of the Bristol & Norfolk District. I am very pleased that many of my local priorities were adopted. Whether it is our arts and cultural programs, food insecurity, homelessness and human services, outdoor recreation, mental and behavioral health or funding for local capital projects and improvements, the resources allocated in this budget will be put to great use in our communities. I am honored to have the opportunity to advocate for our district and I am proud to work with my district partners in the Senate, Senator Rebecca L. Rausch (D-Needham) and Senator Walter F. Timilty (D-Milton), as well as all the members of our delegation from the House of Representatives, for working together in delivering such critical support for our cities and towns.”
