Green Building Trees are one of the best ways to reduce high solar reflection from hardscapes, helping to cool buildings, pedestrians and indeed whole cities providing one of the only natural carbon sinks known to man.

As trees affect both the micro and the macroclimates of cities, tree grates offer one way to help integrate trees in the urban environment. LEED points may be available for projects utilizing tree and trench grates in hardscape strategies for site water management and integrating trees in pedestrian settings.

Recycle All IRONSMITH’s cast products are from 100% recycled materials and are 100% recyclable. In addition, steel products are 100% recyclable as most steel production uses a very high amount of recycled material.

Pedestrian Safety All IRONSMITH’s tree and trench grates are designed to take heavy pedestrian loads without bowing, flexing or movement. No grates have openings larger than 1/2”, preventing heals, wheels, canes and crutch tips, etc. from getting caught. These grates not only allow, but invite pedestrian use, expanding the walkable area and reducing the hazard of an open tree well.

Tree Health Today’s urban environment is challenging for trees. To accommodate this challenge, IRONSMITH offers a wide selection of large tree grate sizes that give the trees as much room as possible. Throughout this catalog, those available, where the size is 84” or more, will be highlighted in blue. (See pages 9 & 10). IRONSMITH tree grates have a selection of standard tree openings and most are expandable in the field, as needed. For additional grate and tree opening sizes, please visit www.ironsmith.biz.

Illumination Our new In-Grate Luminaire is the first light assembly that is specifically designed for IRONSMITH tree grates. This light assembly will help take the hassles out of up-lighting specifications with our tree grates (See page 10). We offer light wells with covers on most of our models. In addition, clear acrylic light well covers are available.

Series 2 offers a larger selection of rectangular grates with matching square and round models. Tree openings are the same as Series 1. In addition, 96” square and round grates have optional 40” and 48” openings.

“America’s tree grate”, Starburst, is one of our most versatile grates, equally at home in a high fashion mall or on a busy sidewalk. It’s our most popular tree grate and is available with 1/4" slot openings (Series 1) and 3/8" slot openings (Series 2).

Note that some rectangular sizes are available in both series.

On the right: 84” Starburst grates allow pedestrians and trees to co-exist on Las Vegas Boulevard. In the same city, extra large 96" Starburst grates with four foot tree openings are used by a major casino around the dozens of mature palm trees in pedestrian areas, to gain valuable real estate.

Our one piece frames make installation easy and reliable. This means frames can be shipped separately from grates for quick installation.

In addition, Ironsmith provides grinding pads on all tree grates for easy levelling on site, when needed. Maintain top of frame flush with sidewalk at all times.

One or two piece steel frames for simple, cost effective installations.

Ironsmith frames are factory jig welded to assure a correct fit and to minimize field assembly, saving time and money.

Heavy steel angle frames are resistant to bending and flex which helps to insure a flat, uniform, consistent installation.

One piece assures a good fit, minimum rocking problems and leveling is relatively easy.

They can be used in sawcut retrofit tree wells, will accommodate pavers and can bolt up to curbs.

Installation methods can be combined on any frame. Frames can be supplied in two pieces to accommodate existing trees.

All frames are roll formed or jig welded from mild steel angle per ASTM A-36 (usually 1-3/4" x 1-3/4" x 1/4") with proper clearances built-in for an accurate fit.

They can be hot-dip galvanized after assembly to prevent corrosion.

There’s a standard frame for every grate in this catalog and we offer custom frames for other applications.

all steel tree guards Ironsmith tree guards are fabricated and jig welded from hot rolled steel (ASTM-A36) in many rugged styles. They can be attached to the tree grate by first drilling and then bolting, or can be mounted to a crossbar, available as an option with the grate frames. They're fabricated in halves and bolt together for easy labor saving field assembly, with all installation hardware provided by Ironsmith. Standard treeguard height is 5 feet and standard tree opening is 16", however any height and opening may be requested.

To make installation easy, a system of steel angle frames is offered. Preformed steel troughs with zero slope are available for straight sections to aid concrete form-up.

Paver-Grate

means greater flexibility ... lets you design over, not around the tree pit.

Ironsmith now has the exclusive license to manufacture and distribute the patented Paver-Grate paver suspension system. It’s an alternative to traditional tree grates and permits pavers to be suspended directly above the tree pit area. This allows a seamless look while preserving air and water circulation, while preventing soil compaction and roots from lifting pavers.

Paver-Grate is suspended 2-4 inches above the root ball, permitting the root system to expand without damage. Air, water and nutrients can readily circulate and the tree is easily accessible should it become injured or diseased.

Available standard in 4’, 5’, 6’ and 8’ sizes, and custom sized to your project. Paver-Grate is lighter than traditional grates and does not require a frame, so installation is easy.

Easy center opening expansion The expandable center addresses the need for future expansion as the tree matures. By removing the center panel, the 12” square opening increases to 24” to accommodate the growing tree trunk. Paver-Grate’s design practically eliminates weed growth and trash accumulation, as paving materials cover everything but a small area around the trunk.

cast iron & aluminum bollards All Ironsmith bollards are cast in gray iron or aluminum, with a minimum 7/16" wall thickness for increased strength.

Most styles may be ordered to accommodate chains.

Bollards are usually permanently embedded in the pavement. (An imbed is part of the casting and standard with all Ironsmith bollards). Alternately, they may be set in a steel sleeve (provided by Ironsmith) to be easily removed for emergency access. We recommend aluminum for removable bollards due to weight considerations.

finish and material options MATERIALS: All Ironsmith cast products are available in recycled cast gray iron, aluminum or bronze. Special alloys of aluminum and bronze available by special request FINISHES: Natural unfinished gray iron will develop an attractive rust patina that does not penetrate or weaken the casting and is maintenance free. Natural aluminum will age to a pewter gray. Alternately, the following finishes can be provided to fit your needs and budget. 1. Primed for your choice of top coat; 2. Primed and painted in exterior enamel or primed and painted exterior polyurethane; 3. Powder coated;

4. Galvanized or zinc metalized. We can match paint finishes to your color choice and a range of colors are available in powder coat. Please call with your requirements.

Cast iron is extremely susceptible to rust. Some rust should be expected however good the paint system. For this reason the following guidelines should be used when specifying finishes for cast products. 1. Use only dark colors; black, dark brown, dark green, dark gray, etc. 2. If light colors are required, specify a zinc undercoat to help reduce rust bleed through.

3. When no rust can be tolerated, specify cast aluminum.
