day of food, fun and remembrance will be held Sunday as the Friends of St. Kieran continue to raise funds for its mission to acquire the closed church in Heckscherville. The fifth annual Heritage Day in the Valley will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Clover Fire Company, Heckscherville. There is no admission to the event and free parking

If you go What: Heritage Day in the Valley When: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday Where: Clover Fire Company, Heckscherville Entertainment schedule: 11 a.m. — walk to St. Kieren

will be provided. Started in 2009, the annual event is a fundraiser for the Friends of St. Kieran and its mission to get ownership of St. Kieran Roman Catholic Church, which closed in 2008. The group hopes to turn the

parish into a cultural and historic site. Catherine Clifford, organization president, said all proceeds from Heritage Day go toward achieving this goal and every year they see growing support.

“It gets bigger every year. We hope it continues this year,” she said. In addition to being a fundraiser, the event also celebrates the region’s Irish heritage. Clifford said Heckscherville was settled by Irish immigrants and St. Kieran Church was built by the labor of those original inhabitants. “The majority of the people there are celebrating their Irish heritage,” Clifford said. The event will begin at 11 a.m. with a walk to St. Kieran cemetery by the Cass Township Ancient Order of Hibernians. A bagpiper will lead the procession to the cemetery, where a memorial service will be held to honor the AOH members buried there. Clifford said families with relatives buried in the cemetery are invited to participate in the ceremony. No fee is required for the walk and registration will be held until 10:45 a.m. Clifford said the group will be accepting donations. A wide range of homemade ethnic food will be served, including colcannon and Irish stew. The menu will also consist of region favorites like pierogies and picnic staples such as hamburgers and hot dogs. “It’s really a conglomeration of everybody’s heritage,” Clifford said. Family history plays a unique role in Heritage Day. While Clifford

said families are invited to share their histories, genealogist Tom Dempsey will be available to answer questions and help curious individuals discover their family’s paths. Continuing with the Irish heritage theme, entertainment will be provided by local Irish band The Troubles, The Irish Lads and the McCormick School of Irish Dance. Clifford said visitors are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and families will be allowed to bring free-standing canopies this year. Registration is not required but recommended by calling 570-8741166 or email friendsofstkierans @ptd.net. Fore more information about Heritage Day in the Valley and the organization, visit friendsofstkierans.com.

The Troubles, featuring Paul Noon, left, Pat Miggins and Loretta Murphy, top, perform “The Night Pat Murphy Died” during last year’s Heritage Day in the Valley. This year’s event will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Clover Fire Company, Heckscherville.

‘Internship’ gets job done

F ro m t h e ve r y f i r s t moments of “The Internship,” the buddy comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, it’s obvious exactly where it’s going. Two washed-up salesmen on the wrong side of 40 vie with a bunch of mouthy millennials for a job at Google. If youcan’tguessthatthegeezers willteachtheyoungsterssomething about real life while the kids school them about Google Chrome, well, you’ve never seen a movie before. But, as the saying goes, it’s the getting there that’s half the fun. “The Internship” doesn’t break any new comedic ground and it will evaporate from memory upon leaving the darkened theater. But it’s an amiable, occasionally laugh-out-loud fish-out-ofwater tale that gently mocks our modern technological age while simultaneously embracing it (and giving a big sloppy kiss to Google). Best buds Billy (Vaughn) and Nick (Wilson) find themselves out on the street when the watch company they work for goes belly up. After fooling around on the Internet, Billy finagles a way to get them into a Google internship program. A lucky few will be offered a full-time job at the end of it. But there are two problems: Neither Billy or Nick knows anything about technology, and they’re twice the age of all the other interns. Their very presence and incompetence enrages a snotty Brit intern (Max Minghella). A boo-hiss villain if there ever was one, he takes it upon himself to kick them out of the running. Meanwhile, Billy and Nick team up with other intern outcasts — who may know a lot about computers but little about social interaction — to try to outwit their competitors

MOVIE REVIEWS and the no-nonsense manager who oversees the program, Mr. Chetty (Aasif Mandviv). As directed by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”) and written by Vaughn and Jared Stern, “The Internship” offers a broad canvas for its two stars — last together in “The Wedding Crashers” in 2005. They riff off each other with abandon. Once on the corporate campus, Nick flirts with an exec (Rose Byrne) who, at first, is cool to his boorish charms. While the romantic element feels a bit tacked on and isn’t as funny as the main narrative, it’s nevertheless a showcase for the shaggy-haired Wilson persona. The movie also plays up all the cliches of the Google workplace — free food, sleep pods and co-workers who all look like they’re in indie bands. Yet it’s never critical of Google, nor does it even mention controversies over privacy. But no one goes to a Vince Vaughn / Owen Wilson comedy for a lecture. They go to see a couple of guys who are on their comedic game, and that’s just what the two deliver here. “The Internship,” a 20th Century Fox Film Corp. release, is rated PG-13 for some sexuality, crude humor, partying, strong language. Running time: 119 minutes. ★★★

“The Purge” James DeMonaco’s “The Purge” is a bloody-minded, heavy-handed satire of life within these violent United States. It’s a horror film with the occasional visceral thrill — the fear of being hunted, the excitement of righteous violence against nameless intruders. But mostly, it’s just a clumsy lecture about who

we’re becoming: haves vs. have-nots, with the haves armed to the teeth. In the not-distant future, “the New Founding Fathers” have decreed America has one night of catharsis when we can give in to our most violent impulses. Murder and mayhem abound and first responders have the night off. Basically, you’re on your own for “The Purge.” The well-off can hunt the homeless, the “weak” and those who don’t contribute to society. Or just seek revenge. Others whom we’ll call “rich liberals” buy massive security systems and hunker down in their fortress McMansions for the night. Ethan Hawke portrays one of the latter, a salesman who’s gotten rich off selling armored security systems. Lena Headey plays his resigned-to-thisyearly-“purge” wife. Max Burkholder and Adelaide Kane are the sensitive son and hormonal daughter whose trusting natures would thwart any security system. Because Zoe (Kane) has let the boyfriend Dad forbids her to see into the house, and Charlie (Burkholder) rescues a homeless vet (Edwin Hodge), saving him from a hunt. And that brings vengeful preppies (led by Rhys Wakefield) who were stalking the vet down on their happy home. DeMonaco seems awfully concerned that we won’t “get” his points here, so there’s repetitious 24-hour TV coverage about how it is time to “release the beast and purge our American streets,” debates over the morality of it, how “culling” society lowers unemployment and helps the economy. You can see what Hawke and Headey envisioned in this — the chance to make a statement for compassion

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Adelaide Kane stars in the Universal Pictures release “The Purge.” and humanity in the face of the social Darwinism that might create a night like this. But lapses in logic and characterization trip it up at every turn. This Charlie kid seems to have a death wish, and a sense of removal from his supposed compassion that undercuts his supposed motivation. The boyfriend is underdeveloped. The family is armed, but their “plan” of defense laughably involves splitting up and searching for the wounded homeless man in their pitch-black house. “The Purge” is an 85-minute chore that tediously plays like a real-time recreation of the night of the purge — all 12 hours of it. “The Purge,” a Universal release is rated R for strong disturbing violence and some language. Running time: 85 minutes. ★½

“Kings of Summer” “The Kings of Summer” is the cinematic equivalent of an Arctic-cold popsicle on a Sahara-hot day. Refreshing and satisfying but not overly sentimental, the film taps into the frustrations of adolescence with warmth and wit. It’s also a confident calling card for first-time features director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, novice screenwriter Chris Galletta and a trio of young stars who may lose the cloak of anonymity after this.

Joe (Nick Robinson) and Patrick (Gabriel Basso) are Ohio high-school sophomores and best friends who, facing the end of the school year and another summer in the company of clueless parents, decide to run away from home. But they’re not heading to the bright, beckoning lights of L.A. or New York. Instead, they’re going deep in the local woods to build their own house where they can live out their Boys’ Life dreams. Tagging along is oddball classmate Biaggio (Moises Arias), a short spark plug of a boy for whom every day seems to be a vacation from mundane reality. Pushing Biaggio’s impish personality to a comical extreme, Arias steals every scene he’s in. Everything’s ready for the most perfect summer ever, but there’s one thing from Joe’s old world that he can’t shake: his crush on Kelly (Erin Moriarty), the girl from school who’s going out with someone else. Of course, the boys’ fantasies of splendid isolation don’t go quite as planned, but, along the way, they learn

a thing or two about themselves and their friendship. As with Jeff Nichols’ more dramatic “Mud,” “Kings” is a deeply shaded though comedic portrait of male adolescence. That makes the one misstep — a broad, onedimensional caricature of the parents (especially Patrick’s) as being so completely divorced from their children’s dissatisfaction - a little disappointing. But that’s a small quibble. Like last year’s surprise summer hit “Moonrise Kingdom,” “The Kings of Summer” deserves to be the nonstar-driven, non-special effects-riddled must-see movie of the season. And, unlike a popsicle, it won’t melt from your memory so quickly. “The Kings Of Summer,” A CBS Films release, is rated R for strong language, teen drinking. Running time: 93 minutes. ★★★★ Reading Movies 11 & IMAX FRI-TUE • 6/7-11

Steer clear of per-hand ante

Dear Mark: I had not seen this subject mentioned in your column, and perhaps you know, but if not, I thought you would be interested in knowing about an “Ante” in the Indian casinos in Oklahoma. Before the dealing of each hand, the player must pay an “ante” fee, the minimum being 50 cents, and it escalates depending upon the size of one’s bet. The casinos say they are simply complying with the state law. I don’t know about you, but I will steer-clear of Oklahoma’s blackjack tables. Doc Mac Huh! I guess this brings new meaning to the Oklahoma term SOONER. Like, you’ll be broke, much SOONER. Yes, Mac, I have seen the “ante” in play years ago at the Barona Resort and Casino in San Diego. Indian casinos first came online in California, plenty of them had it. Luckily, it is back to normal blackjack. Generally, if you bet $5 to $50, your ante is 50 cents. Wager $50 to $100, the ante runs either 50 cents or $1. More than $100, the ante is $1. Fortunately, on certain nights during the week, some casinos will offer “free” ante play. In addition, one of my readers informed me that if you present a Player’s Club card, you are not required to pay the 50 cents per-hand ante. Ask on

this one. Another reader stated there are favorable rules like a reduced ante of 25 cents, in contrast to 50 cents on $10 and under hands, and bonuses for suited blackjacks and trips 7s. Gimmicks, yes, but overall I would highly recommend NOT playing blackjack if a casino charges a per-hand ante. Although a 50 cents per hand cost might not seem like much, it adds a tremendous amount to the house edge. In fact, if you are playing for $5 a hand, you are giving up 10 percent to the casino. Play 40 hands, and you just gave $20 away in potential profit to the house. Heck, you might as well play slots.

They made clay sculptures of what they want their finished product to look like then packed around the clay a special sand that hardened. They then removed the clay to create a space into which they will pour the iron. This year’s group of students has seemed really interested in the project, which is great to see, cofounder and instructor Pat McGowan said. “This isn’t something you can just throw together,” he said. “This is a very hard process.” The program also added a

ment and tools in a time before it was a disposable society,” Perry said. Nathaniel Barbolish, a sophomore at Lackawanna Trail High School, joined Keystone Iron Works this year because he “always thought working with metal would be cool.” “It’s a great, hands-on experience,” he said. The students know the iron pour can be dangerous since they will have to handle a ladle full of hot iron. But they develop trust in each other through the program, allowing them not only to complete the pour safely but also to ensure their pieces cast correctly, the instructors said. Program co-founder and instructor Nikki Moser said she believes that, by mentoring the students and putting them in a situation where they have to trust each other,

they will see an opening where their lives could be better. She loves when a gleam starts to appear in the students’ eyes and they start to gel and feed off the energy. “They get braver,” Moser said. “They’re not afraid to make an object.” Afa Gallery, 514 Lackawanna Ave., also will display work from the PATH students who participated in the program this month with an opening reception during First Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. The students will demonstrate what they have learned on Saturday when they cast their sculptures from 1 to 5 p.m. at the festival. That day and Sunday, guests can check out free activities like industrial-arts demonstrations plus food, music and art at the iron furnaces.
