owntown Tamaqua will turn into a big family reunion Sunday for the 23rd annual Summerfest. The traditional Father’s Day event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout a five-block area of the downtown district. The event is free and has activities for every member of the family, according to Dale Freudenberger, Tamaqua Historical Society president, host of the celebration. “Every year it has worked out to be good for families,” Freudenberger said. “Families come out to celebrate with dad. It works out really well for Father’s Day.” An antique and classic car show will be held from 10

What: 23rd annual Summerfest When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Where: Downtown Tamaqua. a.m. to 3 p.m. on South Railroad Street. Hosted by the Tamaqua Street Machine Association, the show concludes with an awards ceremony at 3 p.m., featuring People’s Choice awards for the top three vote recipients and the Mayor’s Choice trophy. For the kids, the Eclectic Circus will perform at noon and 1:30 p.m. at the Tamaqua Area School District administration building on West Broad Street. Buster the Clown will be making balloon animals throughout the festival grounds and Smokey Bear may also be seen wandering around Summerfest. Most of the annual celebration will be held outdoors, including a craft and street fair along West Broad and Nescopeck streets. Vendors from around the region will sell goods such as jewelry, handmade crafts and clothing. Food vendors and downtown restaurants will provide a wide range of selections for the family. Weather is always a concern when holding an outdoor event, but Freudenberger said the Sumnmerfest has never been canceled during its two-decade run. “We have been fortunate over the years to have good weather. We are hoping our track record follows through on Father’s Day,” he said. A special exhibit will be

‘Man of Steel’ not super, but it mostly flies right This Superman settles scores. And takes his shirt off. This “Man of Steel” flies up, up and away, with his teeth bared and his fists clenched. This Lois Lane knows his story, straight off. There’s little mystery about him. If every generation gets the Superman it deserves, “Man of Steel” suggests we’ve earned one utterly without wit or charm, a grim, muscle-bound 33-year-old struggling to reconcile the past he is just learning about, trying to fit in with a military that may or may not consider him a threat but that needs his help when his fellow Kryptonians come to call. “Man of Steel” is a radical re-interpretation of the Superman myth, no sin in itself. The Zack (“300”/“Sucker Punch”) Snyder version, scripted by David S. Goyer (story by Christopher Nolan), dwells much longer on Krypton and re-arranges the story, hurling us into the adult KalEl’s Wolverine-like loner life as an American adult, showing us his formative childhood with his adoptive parents the Kents (Diane Lane and Kevin Costner) only in flashbacks. It gives his Kryptonian nemesis, General Zod, a mission — however misguided. And a point of view. So Michael Shannon, who plays him, isn’t all that scary, Without the wit, winks, flirtation and old-fashioned sentiment of the “Truth, justice and the American way” take on the character, all Henry Cavill (“Immortals”) has to do is mix it up in a lot of “Transformers” inspired brawls with armored-plated

MOVIE REVIEWS aliens and occasionally agonize over it all. Yes, most of the far sillier “Transformers” movies were more fun. From its production design — ugly, black, insectoid spaceships — to its instantly forgettable Hans Zimmer musical score, this movie goes out of its way to remove itself from the Christopher Reeve “Superman” movies. And it is the poorer for it. Russell Crowe and Ayelet Zurer play the parents who pack their baby up and ship him off their doomed planet. The sad resignation of the Marlon Brando version of father Jor-El is lost because General Zod stages a coup, mid-planetary meltdown, giving this overlong prologue shoot-outs and armored brawls. And Crowe’s Jor-El never quite goes away. We spend far too little time with the story’s heart, the ways the baby is embodied with good old-fashioned heartland virtues. Costner and Lane have the film’s best scenes. “Decide the kind of man you want to be,” Clark Kent’s dad tells him, urging him to keep his ID secret, to use his powers sparingly, with care. The grown-up Clark wanders the bars and crab fishing fleets, committing the occasional supernatural act of compassion and the occasional supernatural fit of pique. Amy Adams is an overachieving Lois Lane, totally clued in on the evidence of an alien among us by the military. Laurence Fishburne is a dull Daily Planet

editor Perry White. Take away the antecedents (no Jimmy Olsen, boy photographer), strip the character’s Americanness (to make it easier to sell overseas) and it’s still a competent movie — state of the art explosions, implosions and what-not. But take away the whimsy and the fun, and one has to wonder why Snyder, Goyer, Nolan and Warner Bros. bothered. “Man Of Steel,” a Warner Bros. release, is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and for some language. Running time: 143 minutes. ★★

“This is the End” The world won’t end with just a bang or a whimper, but also a truckload of sophomoric humor and Hollywood in-jokes. At least that’s the way Seth Rogen and a bunch of his movie-star buddies see it in “This Is the End,” a riff on the apocalypse that’s closer in spirit to Harold & Kumar than Genesis and Revelations. Directed and written by Rogen and friend Evan Goldberg (who wrote “Pineapple Express”), and based on a short film by Jason Stone, “This Is the End” is one extended meta joke about stardom and celebrity that goes on too long and gets derailed by the pair’s desire to keep upping the level of comedic absurdity and cheesy special effects. Still, there are lots of low-brow laughs, especially in the first half. As with everyone else in the film, Rogen plays himself, or at least a crude caricature of his geeky persona. He has invited Jay Baruchel (“Trop-

ic Thunder”), an actor friend and fellow Canadian, to L.A. for some down time. They head over to James Franco’s new place for a house party, and that’s where the whole crew — Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Rihanna, Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Mindy Kaling, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Paul Rudd, basically anyone who has ever walked by a Judd Apatow set — is ready to have a good time. But then the Rapture happens (Spoiler alert: None of the celebs gets called to heaven), massive quakes reduce L.A. to rubble, and Seth, Jay, Craig, James, Danny and Jonah are left to fend for themselves amid an atmosphere of camaraderie, cowardice and cracks about each others’ movies. The film is at its buddymovie, Hollywood-skewering best when staying on the human level. Even the usually repellent McBride has a few good lines. Yet as events become more supernatural, “This Is the End” spirals into over-the-top silliness — Hill getting possessed probably sounded good on paper — as Seth and Jay struggle to find a way to get into heaven. It’s as if Rogen and Goldberg, making t h e i r d i re c t i n g d e bu t , couldn’t keep up the conceit. It’s an apocalypse of a different sort for filmmakers when they run out of ideas long before their movie ends. “This Is The End,” a a Sony/Columbia release, is rated R for crude and sexual content, brief graphic nudity, strong language, drug use, violence. Running time: 107 minutes. ★★★

It really was a pretty sweet gig

Dear Mark: Currently, I am working two crummy jobs and was looking to go into the casino business. We have three casinos in close proximity to where I live. I hear that dealers make a decent living, which I am sure is more than I am making now. Should I make the leap into the casino business? Any advice you can give me based on your dealing experience would be appreciated. Sheila S. Most novices looking for a dealing job obtain them one of two ways. Either you attend a local dealing school and then audition, or you are hired from within after working some low-level job at the casino. Many casinos even have an internal dealing school to train new hires. If your work history file shows no major screw-ups, rarely call in sick

and management requires a few fresh dealers, you will be sent to their in-house college of dealing. The course is not a lengthy one, and you can expect to finish your training in about three weeks. If your existing employment is asking customers if they would like to supersize their order, well then, I’d think seriously about making the leap. The benefits, Sheila, are sizable over your current work position. From my own personal experience, here are just a few. Pay: A dealer’s pay is based mostly on tips. There

Benefits: Today’s casinos offer excellent benefits from medical coverage, bonuses, and matching 401K programs. Some casino dealers in Las Vegas have union contracts that include job security, seniority rights and other workplace protections. The Chow: Four of the seven casinos where I was employed gave us one free meal per shift, two offered meals for as little as two bucks, and one at half price. In one casino where I worked, leftover surf ‘n’ turf and other gastronomical goodies from their first-class restaurant found their way down to the g raveyard employees. I remember one employee

yelling out, “enough of the crab legs already.” Scheduling: Because most casinos offer 24-hour gaming, you can usually choose your shift. In my case, it was mostly swing shift. How else was I supposed to ski 100 days a year? Time off was also easy to get. Of all of my ridiculous requests, which were many, I do not remember ever being denied a shift off. Breaks: How does working one hour dealing cards, and then getting a 20-minute break sound to you? That’s every hour, on the hour. Relocation: Because many casinos are under a corporate umbrella of multiple properties, it is relatively easy to transfer from one

All in all, $40,000, was typical pay for where (Reno/Tahoe) and when I worked. Inexpensive Education: In-house training for existing employees for dealer positions is typically FREE, or, about a $500 expense to learn to deal blackjack at a dealing school. Working Conditions: In the seven different casinos that I worked in, I was never hassled. If you’re a screw up, sure, you’ll get your just deserts.
