‘White House’ delivers silly fun

If you see just one terrorists-take-over-the-WhiteHouse thriller this year, make it “White House Down.” Even if you saw the dour and bloody “Olympus Has Fallen,” which has a LOT in common with “White House Down,” you owe it to yourself to check out Roland “2012” Emmerich’s preachy, goofy, over-the-top take on “’Die Hard’ at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.” From the earnest but earnestly funny president in jeopardy (Jamie Foxx) who doesn’t like bad guys yanking on his sneakers (“Take your hands OFF my Jordans!”) to the eye-rolling image of a child having a “Les Miz” big-flag-on-thebarricades moment, “White House Down” is a corker, real competition for “Fast & Furious 6” as the dumbest fun you’ll have at the movies this summer. Channing Tatum is Cale, the war vet / D.C. cop who can’t convince Maggie Gyllenhaal to let him in the Secret Service. Cale has to content himself with guarding the speaker of the House (Richard Jenkins) and calling in favors to get his daughter (Joey King) a White House tour. Then we see who Emmerich cast as the head of the White House Secret Service detail — James Woods. There’s “on-the-nose” casting, and then there’s casting Woods as a potentially volatile villain — TOO on the nose. We go through the same “Olympus has Fallen” hyperprofessional mercenary assault on the various security agencies that allows bad guys to crash into the White House. And we see Cale, the guy not good enough to get into the Secret Service, charge to the rescue — of his

Along the way, Sarah and Shannon tangle with hardheaded DEA agents (Dan Bakkedahl and Taran Killam), exasperated bosses (Demian Bichir and Thomas F. Wilson), smarmy villains (Michael McDonald) and personality quirks that often threaten to derail the investigation entirely. Written by Katie Dippold (making her feature debut after stints on TV’s “Parks and Recreation” and “Mad TV”), the narrative doesn’t break any new ground — if you’ve seen any classic buddy-cop comedy-drama in the last 30 years, it’s not too difficult to figure out how things will end up. Yet among some subtle observations about gender inequality, the film makes sure to leave plenty of breathing room for McCarthy, Bullock and the largely game cast of supporting

players to riff on all sorts of ridiculousness. Indeed, an entire movie could be made about the characters populating the Mullins family (one of whom is played by New Kid on the Block Joey McEntire), whose appearance routinely guarantees roars of laughter throughout the film. “The Heat’s” centerpiece, however, is a long, seemingly totally improvised evening that Sarah and Shannon spend in a seedy Boston bar, drinking themselves silly and indulging in karaoke, among other ill-advised pursuits. It’s a gem of messy, go-forbroke comedy, full of laughout-loud moments, and it underscores how McCarthy, in particular, can leave you

gasping for air with the right material. Bullock likewise shines, reminding viewers of her natural knack for comedy, even if this particular brand is a bit rougher and raunchier than her usual fare. That a sequel to “The Heat” is already in the works should give you some indication as to the studio’s hopes for the film, and the suits are right to suspect it will be a hit. Melissa McCarthy’s ascension will continue — “The Heat” is nothing if not an appropriate title at this juncture in her career — and pretty soon, screenwriters and directors alike will be thinking twice before stooping to shove their star through small spaces. “The Heat,” a 20th Century Fox release, is rated R for pervasive language, strong crude content and some violence. Bill Kline, Recreation Commission director and event committee chairman, said Family Fun Night started nine years ago and continues to grow. “Every year we get bigger. The organization donated $1,000 to the fireworks display from their winter show and, according to Kline, plan to do the same with an upcoming show in December. The dunk tank will return this year and feature Schuylkill Haven Area High School football head coach Mike Farr and Mayor Mike Devlin. Kline said the idea is to keep a family atmosphere. No smoking or alcohol is permitted. “It is a good place to bring

CNN bringing back ‘Crossfire’ BY JOE FLINT LOS ANGELES TIMES

LOS ANGELES — The original political shout-fest is coming back. CNN said “Crossfire,” which was a staple of the cable news channel for over 20 years before being canceled in 2005, will return to its schedule this fall. “Few programs in the history of CNN have had the kind of impact on political discourse that ‘Crossfire’ did — it was a terrific program then, and we believe the time is right to bring it back and do it again,” said CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker. “We look forward to the opportunity to host passionate conversation from all sides of the political spectrum.” “Crossfire” will keep its format of having right-wingers and left-wingers square off. Representing the right will be former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and columnist S.E. Cupp. For mer Obama campaign manager Stephanie Cutter and Van Jones, founding president of

“Rebuild the Dream,” a progressive think tank, will represent the left. When it premiered in 1982, “Crossfire” then hosted by Pat Buchanan and Tom Braden, became one of CNN’s most popular shows. Over the years, its hosts have included the late Robert Novak, Mary Matalin, Michael Kinsley and James Carville. Toward the end of its long run, “Crossfire” was accused by critics of lowering the intellectual level of discourse and being more interested in the political process than in serious issues. “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart famously went on the show in 2004 and told then-hosts Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala that “Crossfire” was “hurting America” and was nothing more than “partisan hackery.” “You have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably,” Stewart said. CNN will announce a time slot for the new “Crossfire” later this summer.

Dear Mark: I had an unfortunate experience at Harrah’s Reno recently. Moving from a winning penny slot machine with a cash voucher for $50.17, I decided to play a quarter slot and inserted the voucher. The voucher was rejected, and I inserted it again, still rejected. I knew the $50.17 voucher was good and decided the slot must be malfunctioning. So, I walked over to a penny machine. I inserted the voucher, and it was accepted, but it only registered 17 cents! Assuming that the slot ate my $50, I asked to see a slot supervisor who explained the quarter slot I had been playing only gives credit for dollar amounts in 25-cent increments and it refunds the difference AUTOMATICALLY. Since ticket comes back upside down, I complained that I no reason to check it and inadvertently walked away, leaving the $50 for the next player to use. Talk about pennies from heaven! Credit Harrah’s for listening to my displeasure, and while they couldn’t refund the $50, the casino manager graciously provided me with a gift certificate for the weekend buffet for two. I returned to Harrah’s the next day and found that they had posted a sign on each of the quarter slots in question. It reads CHECK YOUR TICKET. Leigh H.
