igh school students will be the featured artists in a gallery opening this weekend at the Schuylkill County Council of the Arts. Various forms of art, including drawings, paintings, sculptures and pottery, will be on display in April at 1440 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, beginning Sunday at the gallery’s grand opening. Scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m., the opening ceremony will have music from Kim Russell-Seibert and light refreshments. The event is free to the public but freewill donations will be accepted. The gallery will have art from students and educators from high schools throughout the county. One of the schools that will be represented is Pine Grove Area High School. Art teacher Megan Bux said five seniors and a junior entered artwork this year. She said she thinks the students will have a total of 12 pieces on display. “We had a few enter last year 2

It is so important for them to have opportunities to exhibit and display their artwork for the community,” she said. “It is also exciting that Schuylkill County brings all of the districts together for a group gallery show. It gives the students an opportunity to see what other students and peers their age are creating, which can

She said the gallery is a great avenue for students to express their talents and creativity. “I feel that these events are important because they give the students a sense of belonging to

the community and it reinforces the notion that art is not created in a vacuum,” Boncore said. “The arts give students a venue to be expressive and being able to exhibit that gives them a sense of pride.” Other forms of art that will be on display are photography, jewelry and graphics. Kim Roulin, art teacher at TriValley High School, said it’s important to have public events for stu-
dents who possess these talents to showcase their skills. “I think it is a great opportunity for students to have their artwork showcased in a gallery setting. It’s important that we focus on the arts as much as the core subjects,” Roulin said. “We have some very talented students and, not to mention, it’s what makes the world go around.” For more information about the show, call the SCCA at 570-622-2788.
Celebrate the arts this month in county Get out! That’s right, I said get out! We’ve been cooped up long enough. Yes, the weather is finally breaking (dare I even say it?) and there’s a surfeit of activity to keep you engaged and in a positive frame of mind this month. From walks, hikes and a Raptor Egg Hunt at Hawk Mountain on April 19 to music and the arts, there’s loads to do in Schuylkill County in April. Many notable fine artists have called Schuylkill County home. (And why not?) Still-life artist Rubens Peale lived outside Schuylkill Haven until his death in 1865. His father was Charles Wilson Peale, portrait artist for George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and others. George Benjamin Luks

‘Winter Soldier’ 1 of Marvel’s best “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the latest Marvel movie/merchandising monolith, has all the makings of another generic comic-book blockbuster. It’s a toolong sequel with a few snappy one-liners, a third act that concludes with a predictable cacophony of explosions, and the usual end-credit previews for the next installment. Nothing new to see here. Except, for the most part, it works. Maybe it’s the charm and chemistry between Chris Evans as our square-jawed hero, Steve Rogers, and Scarlett Johansson as his partner in global crime-fighting, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. Maybe it’s the rock’em-sock-’em, mano-a-mano action scenes that directors/ brothers Anthony and Joe Russo stage. Maybe it’s the topical relevancy as the gov-

Whatever the case, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is one of the better entries in the franchise. Be sure to stay through the credits as there are two previewswedgedinthere.Afterall, no matter how good “Captain America” is, it’s really just a long commercial for promoting the whole Marvel enterprise. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” a Walt Disney release, is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, gunplay and action throughout. Appreciation Month is designed to shine the spotlight on the extraordinary history of jazz and its importance in American culture. We’re a musical community and numerous famous musicians have called Schuylkill County home, including Les Brown, Michael Edwards and Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. The SCCA will host its Blue Note Café on April 11 and program on Les Brown and his Band of Renown on April 13. In another important local happening on the Schuylkill arts scene, our friends at Schuylkill County’s VISION are busy working to bring the Block of Art on April 25 to 27 in downtown Pottsville. The historic district of Pottsville comes alive with
fine art of all types, from paintings to poetry, theater to music. Innovative sights and sounds will fill the temporary galleries, spilling out of the grand historic structures into the street. Some new additions this year include a John O’Hara Walking Tour at 10 a.m. April 26 (guided by yours truly; wish me luck!) which meets in the Union Station parking lot and Music in the Arts Youth Performances, featuring the “Minor Notes Chorale,” on April 27 with concerts at 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Greystone consistently steps up to the plate supporting the arts in Schuylkill County and this year’s Block of Art is no exception. Plan to enjoy a fabulous meal and
interesting discussion as they host a Meet the Artists Brunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. As part of Block of Art, Schuylkill County’s VISION will host a benefit at Roma Pizzeria and Restaurant in the Oak Room featuring a preview of the evening’s Art Auction along with fabulous food and drink for a mere $20. Tickets are available at the door or contact us at 570-622-7700. There’s a whole lot more going on in April but alas, I’m out of room my friends. For more information on the events I talked about and many more that I didn’t, be sure to visit our calendar of events at www.schuylkill.org.
