year after bidding farewell to the parade he helped establish in Girardville, John “Mouche” McNelis will be leading the march Saturday at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Pottsville. “I’m looking forward to it. I’m honored,” McNelis said about serving as grand marshal for the 39th edition of the city’s parade. Sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians John F. Kennedy Div. 2, the annual celebration of Irish heritage will step off at 11 a.m. on West Market Street. The parade will form at 10 a.m. between 12th and 14th streets. It will travel east on Market to Second Street, then south to Mahantongo Street, east to Centre Street, north to Laurel Boulevard and west to Third Street, where it will end. Highlighted by the parade, events are planned throughout the day to honor St. Patrick. The day will kick off with Mass at 8 a.m. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Mahantongo Street. The ceremony will honor the deceased members of the men’s and ladies’ divisions of the AOH. A buffet breakfast will follow at 8:45 a.m. at Trippin’ Billie’s, 114 N. Centre St. The meal is open to the public. Tickets are $10 and reservations can be made by calling 570622-1917.

During the breakfast, the Grand Marshal’s Plaque will be presented to McNelis. According to a press release from the AOH, McNelis was unanimously voted to be this year’s grand marshal. Originally a member of the AOH John F. Kennedy Div. 2, McNelis, Mahanoy City, moved on to become a charter member of the Jack Kehoe Div. 1 in Girardville. For the last 10 years, he has served as chairman of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Girardville. The event has become one of the largest annual celebrations in the region, more than tripling the borough’s population on parade day. In 2008, the parade was attended by former President Bill Clinton. McNelis said he is not used to receiving recognition for his work. “I’m totally blown away,” he said. ”To get it from my peers is really something.” He said the event will be extra special because Humane Fire Company No. 1, Mahanoy City, of which he is a member, received permission to attend the parade. The company is known for its lime green firetruck adorned with shamrocks and a phrase on the back written in Gaelic, “The Irish to the rescue.” The day’s festivities will conclude with a Grand Irish Party from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Humane

They can also be purchased through members of the AOH and LAOH or by calling parade Chairman Leo Haley at 570622-1917. Pottsville police have issued parking restrictions for Saturday’s parade. Police said restrictions will be in place from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on the south side of Market Street and the west side of Centre Street. Police said any vehicles not moved from the designated locations will be ticketed and towed at the expense of the owner if deemed necessary by police. In addition, minor traffic flow restrictions will be enacted in the area beginning at 10 a.m. Residents should be aware that once traffic

While St. Patrick’s Day is cele-

‘Need for Speed’ needed better script For anybody tired of digital movie car chases that, while fast and furious, routinely defy the laws of physics, here’s one where the cars and stunts are real (mostly) and spectacular. A cross-country sprint followed by a daredevil dash through rural California by the superest of today’s supercars, “Need for Speed” is a carlover’s dream, a showcase for everything from Bugatti Veyrons to vintage Camaros. It’s a “Cannonball Run” throwback, with drivers punching through gears and burning through tires as they dodge the cops in illegal street races. Given state-ofthe-art stunts and 3-D cinematography, it’s a trip. But “Need for Speed” also makes the journey from video game to big screen without the curse of logic and without the benefit of a punchy, pithy script for its cliched characters to quote. Dumb? They’ve almost outdumbed the dumbest “Fast and Furious” movie. Aaron Paul of “Breaking Bad” is Tobey, a car builder and racer from rural New York whose rivalry with the hometown boy (Dominic Cooper) who made it to the Indy 500 reveals the consequences of tearing it up on public highways. Somebody gets killed, on top of all the innocent bystanders and their SUVs, school buses and mommyvans that they run off the road. Tobey gets out of jail, rounds up his posse (Scott Mescudi, Rami Malek, Ramon Rodriguez) and sets out for revenge. First, he has to get a car. So he talks a billionaire collector into lending him a Shelby Mustang that he customized. As if that would happen. Tobey’s team includes a pilot (Mescudi) who can tip him off about directions and police lying in wait, and a chase truck that can refuel that thirsty beast on
MOVIE REVIEWS the road. As if that’s practical And the car comes with its own “right seater,” a navigator/co-driver who is the owner’s hot blonde car acquisitions specialist, played by Imogen Poots. That almost never happens. They’re dashing from upstate New York, through New York City to Detroit, then Indiana, Monument Valley, Arizona, Utah’s Bonneville salt flats and into San Francisco, where the REAL race will start. Apparently, their sat-nav sucks. The real race, the DeLeon, is run by a mysterious, manic and motor-mouthed millionaire (Michael Keaton) who broadcasts the races online. “Nobody knows who he is,” even though his webcasts are on video and we can see him. But get past those headslappers, give up on hearing any dialogue snappier that “Looks like a scene out of ‘Speed’ down there; hard left in 3, 2, 1 ...” and this is a car fanatic’s dream. Stuntman turned director Scott Waugh (“Act of Valor”) makes this into a stunt team tour de force. No, nobody ever changes tires, no matter how much Tobey drifts that beefy, 900hp Mustang. And some of the bits where cars get airborne are preposterous outside of an auto stunt show. But these throaty machines are put through their paces, with enough of the driving tricks plainly performed by the cast to make this a car culture picture of which Steve McQueen might approve. The cast doesn’t have the sassy swagger of the “Fast & Furious” crew. Paul, surrounded by co-stars of the same modest height, isn’t particularly charismatic in this setting.
But the actors are second bananas here — to the Koenigsegg Ageras, Saleens and Shelby Mustang that feed America’s “Need for Speed,” on screen and off. And whatever the screenwriter’s failings, the cars deliver. “Need For Speed,” a A Touchstone/Dreamworks release, is rated PG-13 for sequences of reckless street racing, disturbing crash scenes, nudity and crude language. Running time: 130 minutes. ★★
“Veronica Mars” It would have been easy for director/writer Rob Thomas to coast through the bigscreen version of his TV series “Veronica Mars.” The film only got made because of a grassroots campaign to
raise money by a loyal legion of “Mars” fans. That meant all Thomas had to do to assure a hit was sprinkle the film with enough original characters, keep Mars (Kristen Bell) as sharp-tongued as when she was solving crimes on UPN and the CW almost a decade ago, and come up with a crime worth solving. Thomas does all that, but he also creates a film that will draw in those who never saw the series. For the newbies, he provides the right amount of exposition to explain who all of the characters are — without making the production feel slow to all of the loyal fans. Because he finds that balance, “Veronica Mars” is both a loving gift for those who adore the series and a fun and entertaining murder mystery for those
who don’t know Veronica Mars from Bruno Mars. The film picks up nine years after Mars left Neptune. She’s on the fast track to a job with a prestigious New York law firm. That’s when she is called home to help her old high school friend, Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), who is the prime suspect in the murder of his pop-star girlfriend. Before you can say Jessica Fletcher, Mars has slipped back into her sleuthing ways while reconnecting with old friends (Percy Daggs III, Tina Majorino) and hanging out with her private investigator father (Enrico Colantoni). A class reunion proves a clever way to provide updates on familiar faces in an organic way. As he did on the TV series,
Thomas cleverly weaves the mystery with the personal life of Mars. It works because Bell jumps right back into playing the character with just the right amount of smarts, sassiness and sensitivity. Author Thomas Wolfe professed you can’t go home again. “Veronica Mars” proves him wrong. This trip back to her old mystery-solving stomping ground is pleasantly entertaining for the uniformed and a perfect “thank you” to all of the loyal fans. “Veronica Mars,” a Warner Bros. release, is rated PG13 for sexuality including references, drug content, violence and some strong language. Running time: 107 minutes. Grade: B

Slots not rigged with a screwdriver
Dear Mark: No matter what you write, you will never get me to believe that slot machines are rigged. That said, I still enjoy your column, so keep trying to convince me. Chet H. Hey, Chet, here’s the deal. The likelihood of winning is less than the likelihood of losing when playing slot machines. Thus, slot machines are “rigged” in favor of the house. To illustrate, say you and I (the house) flip a coin, a dollar a pop. Every time you lose you pay me $1, but when I lose, I only pay you 80 cents. All slot machines are set up the same way. For every dollar inserted, the long-

casino with a $1,000 bet, making for a $35,000 payday. Although the listed minimums for inside and outside wagers can be the same ($5 and $5), the rules are different. A player betting the $5 minimum on inside wagers is allowed to spread five $1 chips around on different bets on the inside. However, the minimum for outside bets means the player must wager the entire $5 on an individual outside bet. Betting $2 on red, $1 on the first 12, and $2 on the second column does not satisfy the minimum. Also, Dave, you cannot
combine your inside and outside bets together to meet the table minimum requirement. If the minimum bet is $5, you have to bet $5 on the inside and/or $5 on the outside. The croupier will not allow you to wager $3 inside and $2 outside.
