Local malls welcome Easter Bunny’s arrival BY ERIC PEDDIGREE COPY EDITOR

he Easter Bunny will be hopping down the bunny trail to two local malls Saturday. The bunny will be making his grand entrance in style at the Cressona Mall. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. with the bunny’s arrival in the back of a convertible provided by Jerry’s Northeast Auto Sales. After greeting the crowd, the bunny will lead the kids on an Easter egg hunt around the mall. Cynthia Huntsinger, mall manager and promotions coordinator, said the hunt is not like other free-for-all hunts held outdoors. “The bunny will march around the interior of the mall and the kids will follow,” she said, adding that it’s more like a parade than an egg hunt. She said the stores will have baskets from which the children will choose an egg. Some eggs will have candy, while others will have tickets for prizes. Following the hunt, children can get their pictures taken with the bunny until 7 p.m. The Easter Bunny will return Sunday for pictures from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Huntsinger said the bunny will be in the mall for pictures every weekend until April 19 for $5, which includes a 4by-6-inch picture and Easter frame. Times are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. Huntsinger said a craft and Easter bingo will also be available Saturday for the children. She said prizes will be given to every kid 2

What: Easter Bunny arrival When: 11 a.m. Saturday at Cressona Mall; noon Saturday at Schuylkill Mall; 11:30 a.m. April 5, Fairlane Village mall who plays bingo. “Kids are thrilled to get anything,” she said. For more information on Cressona Mall’s activities, visit the mall’s Facebook page. At the Schuylkill Mall, the events will kick off at noon with John Cassidy’s “Balloon Freak Show.” Cassidy is a professional comedian, magician and balloon artist. He has been featured on numerous television shows such as “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “Live with Regis and Kelly.” “We are really looking forward to having him here,” Dana Baker, marketing director, said. The Easter Bunny will arrive after the show and will take pictures with children until 8 p.m. A second show by Cassidy will begin at 1:30 p.m. In addition to the bunny, the event will feature a double inflatable slide, balloon animals and treat decorating. Baker said this year’s treat will be cupcakes. “We always do some kind of celebration to welcome the bunny,” she said. The bunny will be at the mall every day for pictures until Easter Sunday. The schedule is noon to 5 p.m. March 30, April 6, April 13; 4 to 8 p.m. March 31 to April 4, 7 to 11 and 14 to 16; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 5, 12 and 17 to 19.

Director’s creativity keeps ‘Noah’ from sinking Filmmaker Dar ren Aronofsky specializes in movies about people driven to extremes — by drug addict i o n ( “ Re q u i e m f o r a Dream”), by the quest for glory (“The Wrestler”), by madness (“Black Swan”). In “Noah,” God Himself is the force driving the hero (Russell Crowe) to build an enormous ark big enough to hold two members of every species of animal on the planet. Man has grown evil and greedy and lazy and unworthy, and God has decided to reboot, leaving only Noah and his family as survivors. When they die, so will all of humankind, and the innocents will inherit the Earth. This would seem to be odd material for a movie, leaving little room for suspense or ingenuity. The Biblical story of the flood is common to many of the world’s religions in one form or another, and although God doesn’t utter a peep in the film (He communicates with Noah through dreams), the movie could be interpreted as a story of faith as easily as it could be a fairy tale. Throw in some fallen angels (or Nephilim) that have taken the form of giant rock monsters with an unfortunate resemblance to prehistoric Transformers, and the movie starts to seem more like a summer blockbuster than a Sunday school lesson. “The Passion of the Christ,” this is not. And yet Aronofsky, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ari Handel and is working on his largest canvas to date, manages to sneak enough difficult questions about following God’s will blindly and the selfish nature of man to give “Noah” enough heft to go along with the giant spectacle.

MOVIE REVIEWS As played by Crowe in his kind-brute “Gladiator” mode, Noah is a man who will not question his Master’s orders, no matter how difficult or illogical they may seem. This doesn’t always sit well with his wife (Jennifer Connelly) or son (Logan Lerman) or their adopted daughter (Emma Watson). But Noah, like most men possessed by what they believe to be right and true, doesn’t think or question: He simply does as he is told. This is expected for the first half of the movie, during the building of the Ark and the amassing of the animals, which are spectacularly created by dazzling CGI. But Noah’s faith is tested as deeply as Abraham’s in the second half of the movie, when Aronofsky throws some wrinkles into the story that, while not part of any known theology, deepen the film’s exploration of the relationship between God and man and the lengths to which true believers are sometimes forced to go in the name of their deity. Even though everyone knows how the story ends, “Noah” is unexpectedly exciting and emotional, and Aronofsky, always a great stylist, constantly does things with the camera that keep the movie visually entrancing (like giving you a point-of-view shot of the first rain drop falling high from the heavens down onto Noah’s face). Will “Noah” anger some rigid purists and scholars because of the liberties it takes? Perhaps. But the point to take home is the message the movie leaves you with, which works regardless of your faith (or lack thereof). Humans are inherently

flawed. How we deal with those defects is what truly matters. “Noah,” a Paramount Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for violence, gore, adult themes. Running time: 138 minutes. ★★★

“Sabotage” Director David Ayer has made two of the best films about the tough lives of cops — Training Day” and “End of Watch” — but his streak ends with the very violent and interestingly cast but forgettable “Sabotage.” Arnold Schwarzenegger, still on his post-gubernatorial Hollywood comeback trail, is John “Breacher” Wharton, the leader of a tough-as-titanium, renegade undercover DEA team that includes guys

with names like Monster (Sam Worthington, “Avatar”), Grinder (Joe Manganiello, “True Blood”), Neck (Josh Holloway, “Lost”), Sugar (Terrence Howard), and Pyro (Max Martini, “Revenge”), as well as a woman, Lizzy (Mireille Enos, “The Killing”), who’s just as brutish. Their lives take a turn for the worse when, after skimming $10 million from a raid on a cartel, they start being picked off one by one, horror-movie style. To add insult to fatal injury, they don’t even have the money anymore. When they went back to where it was hidden, someone had beaten them to it. So they’re broke and in the crosshairs. Not a good place to be.

Enter Caroline (Olivia Williams, “An Education”) and Jackson (Harold Perrineau, “Sons of Anarchy”), two local homicide cops investigating who would want to kill Breacher’s buddies. Meanwhile, Breacher and his diminishing crew are on their own mission to find out who’s doing it. Ayer creates an appealingly gritty style and there are some nice touches. A car chase through the streets of Atlanta is impressive, Enos displays a fiery intensity and Worthington — head shaved, braided goatee — is nearly unrecognizable. But, unlike his past films in which it was easy to identify with the policemen’s travails, Ayer (who co-wrote the script with Skip Woods, “A

Good Day to Die Hard”), doesn’t come up with characters to really care about. They’re all burly bravado with little depth or detail. Plus, it’s getting harder to believe Schwarzenegger, the 66-year-old former bodybuilder turned actor turned politician turned actor again, as a steely, invincible figure. Increasingly, he seems out of place with this persona. Let’s hope this misstep doesn’t mean Ayer has no more compelling cop stories to tell. “Sabotage,” an Open Road release, is rated R for strong bloody violence, pervasive strong language, some nudity/ sexuality and drug use. Running time: 109 minutes. ★★

Loose slots and loads of goodies Dear Mark: Do you have a favorite place to play quarter slots in Las Vegas? What casino has the best returns? I am going there next month. Meri W. When it comes to slot machines, there is no definitive return for slot paybacks at any one particular casino like those for video poker just by using one’s noggin and analyzing a paytable. Luckily, the grind joints in downtown Vegas are competitive and liberal with their returns. In Las Vegas, The Strip theoretically returns 91.37 percent on 25-cent slot machines, whereas the Downtown casino slots return 94.77 percent. As you can see, Meri, the quarter slot machines down-

town pay out slightly more than those located on the Las Vegas Strip. Not only are those returns among the best in the Las Vegas area, they are among the best payback percentages anywhere in the U.S. Playing quarters, puts you in the category of the low roller. So, what you want to do is not only play downtown, but choose a casino with liberal player benefits.

So, what is my favorite? I believe the best cluck-for-thebuck can be had at the El Cortez. The El Cortez is the longest continuously running hotel and casino in Vegas, widely considered by locals as a decent low-end comp house, has a slew of the Las Vegas Review BEST OF LAS VEGAS AWARDS, and yes, some of the loosest slots in town. Being the “old schooler” that I am, I find El Cortez to be one of the few places in Vegas where patrons can

still enjoy classic coin-operated machines. There is nothing better than the sounds of winning as quarters hit the drop bowl.

Loans billion dollar grand prize, where filling out a perfect bracket and predicting the correct result of all 63 games was one in two to the 63rd power, which just happens to be March madness one in nine million trillion (1/9 ,000,000,000,000,000,000). Dear Mark: So picks here, sorry Jason, Any chance you can share I have none. I decided this with us your Final Four time to just root for teams picks and the eventual winwhere I have paid/pay my son ner of your NCAA Bracket. Jason K. Nick’s tuition: University of This year was the first that I Cincinnati, University of have not filled out a bracket in Michigan and Duke. Currentmore than 30 years.
