his weekend, children will learn the importance of reading from the people who write the stories. The 27th annual Family Reading Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fairlane Village mall, Pottsville. The event is cosponsored by The Republican-Herald, Child Development Inc. and “With the the Schuylkill County sad state Reading Council. “If you love to read, of so many it’s a great day,” said bookstores closing, I feel Janet Joyce, director of marketing and events like community services the reading at The RepublicanHerald. festival The free event will are very feature 26 authors repimportant resenting different litto promote erary genres sharing hard copy their books and expebooks and riences with visitors. One of those authors reading.” is Ashland native Marsha Hubler. Marsha Hubler, author According to the event website, republicanheraldnie.weebly.com, Hubler has published 11 juvenile fiction books, including the bestselling “Keystone Stables Series.” Hubler said she has attended the Family Reading Festival for many years and believes in its mission to spread the love of books to children. “I enjoy coming because I love any event that encourages children to read,” she said. “It’s a great event that I wish could be held in every mall but I think Fairlane is unique in its desire to hold this event annually.” Exhibits will line the mall’s main corridor with two designated reading rooms, in which authors will read their books throughout the day. Along with the authors, schools and organizations will have themed exhibits with activities. A free child identifi2

What: 27th annual Family Reading Festival When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday Where: Fairlane Village mall, Pottsville cation program with fingerprinting and pictures will be held in the former arcade across from CVS. There will be a registration table near Boscov’s for students. Joyce said the school with the most registered students will receive a plaque. Hubler said the event is unique in that it allows children to interact with the authors. “I believe the public gains from the event by meeting authors face to face and having children become excited about books and reading by meeting the authors, as well,” Hubler said. The festival also serves as a chance for the authors to network with each other. For Hubler, it acts as a homecoming. “By attending the event, I, of course, sell my books for profit. But just as exciting is meeting some old friends whom I know having grown up in Ashland but haven’t seen in a long time,” Hubler said. “I also enjoy meeting many new friends such as other authors and sweet children who love to read.” Joyce said while the activities are designed for children, the festival is for the entire family and parents may even find a new spark for reading. “Even though the event is geared toward the youth, most of the authors are not,” Joyce said. Hubler said the most important aspect of the event is to promote reading to a younger audience. With the popularity of ebooks, she said it is good to keep the youth acquainted with actual books. “With the sad state of so many bookstores closing, I feel events like the reading festival are very important to promote hard copy books and reading,” Hubler said. “Although many children do read on Kindles, it’s always good to offer them the choice of actually holding a book in their hands and, again, meeting authors face to face.”

Santa arrives in Garfield Square, Pottsville, on Nov. 30 for the Mayor’s Holiday Tree Lighting, with the children’s party at the Humane Fire Company afterward. It’s also Small Business Saturday in downtown Pottsville so plan to keep your holiday shopping dollars local, have a great lunch at Roma Pizzaria, Ruby’s Kitchen or All-American Cafe and take the kids to see that “right jolly old elf!” The Schuylkill Ballet Theatre presents “The Nutcracker” on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at Schuylkill Haven Area High School. You can take the whole family to enjoy the

M&T Movies at the Majestic on Nov. 16 featuring “The Santa Clause.” The Sovereign Majestic will delight us on Nov. 23 and 24 with “Annie Kids” and again on Nov. 30 with The Gary MacCready Ensemble. And if you missed “SHOUT: The Mod Musical” last month, don’t sweat it. Our friends at the Sweet Arrow Lake County Park will host it on Nov. 22 and 23 as a dinner theater. There is always something for everyone in our community. At the visitors bureau, we will be giving thanks by recognizing the annual tourism awardees with four awards categories: volunteer, employee, government partner and business/organiza-

tion. We are currently taking nominations for the awards acknowledging Schuylkill County citizens, community organizations and government entities that have done much to further our local tourism industry. Please consider nominating a worthy individual or organization in one of our four categories while there is still time. Nominations due no later than 4 p.m. Nov. 12. For more information on Schuylkill County events in November, check out our website www.schuylkill.org and remember to give thanks and get out and enjoy Schuylkill County! You can do Vegas on the cheap Dear Mark: It would never have occurred to me to email you except I am reading your column in today’s Detroit Free Press and I see a non-gambler wrote you to say how much he enjoys your column. Ditto for me! However, I do want to tell you that my wife and I love to go to Las Vegas at least once a year. We lie by the pool during the day, walk up and down the Strip like first timers, look at the people and hit two to four shows, then we’re “outta here!” When I get back home I brag that I didn’t gamble one nickel (it’s true) and retell the story of how my wife and I stopped by the hotel bar for a drink; she slipped a $20 in whatever game was in the bar top and got her drink for “free.” I had to pay $8 for my drink. Yep, that round came to $28 plus tip. The story is at
