anta Claus is coming to town this weekend with lots of holiday cheer for good boys and girls. The jolly white-bearded symbol of Christmas will be visiting the Cressona Mall and Fairlane Village mall, Pottsville, on Saturday to officially open the holiday season. In Pottsville, festivities will kick off at 11 a.m. with a show by Sadecky’s Puppets. Santa will make his grand entrance following the show, ushered in by music from Sounds of Heaven. According to Heather Stine, marketing director at the mall, the musical group will stick around to perform for the families waiting to get pictures with Santa. “They are real interactive. They pull the kids over to dance,” Stine said.

Many activities are scheduled throughout the mall for the event, Stine said. Between noon and 3 p.m., there will be a petting zoo, caricatures, face painting, photo booth and an art project. The first 100 children will receive a coupon for a free slice of pizza courtesy of Roman Delight. Stine said Santa Claus will be available for pictures every day throughout the holiday season. A schedule will be posted on the mall’s website, shopfairlanevillage. com. In addition to children,

Santa is making time for his furry friends. Sponsored by Hillside SPCA, Pottsville, pet photo sessions will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 4, 11 and 18. Stine said the popular event has attracted dogs, cats, birds, ferrets and even a skunk. In Cressona, Santa invited a special friend to join him in spreading the spirit of giving. Letting his reindeer have a break, Santa is scheduled to arrive at 11 a.m. in a firetruck courtesy of Cressona Fire Company No. 1. Right behind him will be the world famous candy maker Willy Wonka with his golden tickets. According to mall manager Cynthia Huntzinger, prizes will be given to the lucky five who find Wonka’s tickets. “I think with Willy Wonka we will get a big crowd,” Huntzinger said. Huntzinger said pictures with Santa will be held until 7 p.m. for $5. She said photo sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Saturday until Dec. 21. Huntzinger said the free event usually attracts a couple hundred people and is anticipating the same Saturday. “I expect a lot more because I have been getting a lot of response on FaceJACQUELINE DORMER/STAFF PHOTOS book,” she said. For more information, vis- Santa Claus will arrive in a firetruck courtesy of Cressona Fire Company No. 1 at 11 a.m. Saturday to greet children at the Cressona Mall. ‘Holiday’ revives good feelings “The Best Man Holiday” is a most welcome sequel to the 1999 sleeper hit, “The Best Man,” about a tight-knit circle of black friends who gathered then for a wedding, now to spend Christmas together. Yes, it’s occasionally maudlin and melodramatic, and it’s entirely too long. But it’s also heartfelt and often downright hilarious, and shows off just how canny Malcolm D. Lee’s casting was all those years ago. Everybody’s paired up, now. Pretty much everybody, anyway. And everybody seems successful, with careers, families and high-end cars. But when Mia (Monica Calhoun) and her star running back husband Lance (Morris Chestnut) invite

MOVIE REVIEWS everybody to their suburban New Jersey mansion for the holidays, cracks show in everyone’s facade. A flashback reminds us of the bonhomie they shared back then. And this cast of seasoned pros slips easily into playing characters who can’t help but fall back into their old roles within the group. Once we get past the cliches and compliments — “You’re a sensitive brother,” “I’m your man,” “It’s all good” — the fur flies and things get a bit too real. The cute stuff — the men do a lip-sync “talent show” as New Edition — is balanced against therawlanguageandthedown-

ing his turn in the “Transformers” franchise: He made “The Company You Keep,” a modestly budgeted high-minded thriller with Robert Redford. There was “Lawless,” the Prohibition Era moonshining action picture with Tom Hardy. He’s in the melancholy Dane Lars Von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac.” And now there’s “Charlie Countryman,” a modestly ambitious psychological thriller with a romantic streak. Not a “safe” star vehicle in the mix. So give the kid some credit for guts and ambition. Charlie (LaBeouf) is on “Charlie Countryman” hand to watch as his mother Here’s what Shia LaBeouf (Melissa Leo) is taken off life has been up to since finish- support in the hospital. But

ersthatcomeintheseriousand sad second half of the film. Tonally, it’s hard to reconcile the film’s raw bits with a shoehorned-in nod to faith. That weighs down “Holiday” and makes it overstay its welcome. But it’s still an amusing, well-acted and sharplytimed holiday comedy — old friends getting together to prove that careers, families and kids aside, they’ve still got their R-rated edge, just as they did in college. “The Best Man Holiday,” a Universal release, is rated R for language, sexual content and brief nudity. Running time: 122 minutes. ★★½

she’s not done teaching him. “Go to ... Bucharest.” Is she sure? He isn’t. Nor is anybody else. “You don’t mean Budapest?” It’s a running gag in the movie. The Hungarian capital is cute, touristy. The Romanian capital Bucharest, as Charlie quickly learns, is something else. He meets a charming old Romanian Cubs fan on the flight over. The old man jokes around with him, dozes off and dies. He, too, communicates withCharliepostmortem.Give this hat to my daughter, tell her this phrase in Romanian. LaBeouf is less manic and boyish here, giving a performance stripped of the smart kid patter of much of his work. He does less with more,

even as he’s taking ferocious beatings. “Charlie Countryman” is not a graceful movie, with hints of characters trimmed down, themes launched (talking to ghosts, Charlie’s fearful inability to love un-established) and abandoned. But it works well enough. And it’s a fascinating shot in the dark for a star who is making interesting choices with his stardom, and going to exotic places as he does. Even if he meant to go to Budapest. “Charlie Countryman,” a Millennium release, is rated R for some brutal violence, language throughout, sexuality/nudity, and drug use. Running time: 103 minutes. ★★½

Playing baccarat a no-brainer Dear Mark: Is there a casino game offered that has a very low house edge, but at the same time you don’t need the skills of a professional gambler to play the game? Alex M. The game that offers little use of any gray matter, and a low house edge to boot is either baccarat, or for the low roller, mini-baccarat. No need, Alex, to let the mystique of the game intimidate you. With only two hands dealt regardless of how many players are sitting tableside, a player’s only decision is to wager on the bank or the player hand. As for rules, Alex, they are simple enough; the closest to nine wins. Adding a third card, dependent on the total of Jersey Acres Market Stone Mountain Wine Cellars Wine Tasting Daily

Baby, it’s cold outside, and to be honest, you’re being a baby about it and so am I

You know who I feel bad for? Old Man Winter. He’s not even here yet and many are cursing his very existence. Listen. It has been much colder since Tuesday than it had been in weeks prior, but last time I checked the calendar it was November and that’s about average for this time of year. Every summer it’s too hot. Every winter it’s too cold. For goodness sake, Goldilocks, suck it up. We live in a seasonal climate, and that’s kind of amazing because we get to experience nature and all its various transitions of beauty. I swear, if it weren’t for the flowers of spring and the colorful leaves of fall, we’d probably whine and cry about those poor seasons, too. And, I’d like to openly admit I possess no innocence in this type of complaining. I may be one of the worst ones. I don’t think I have a cold heart or ice water running

I could probably make an ice cube by holding water in my frigid hands. So for me, and the rest of us who cry when it’s cold who are not homeless and aren’t required to work outside to make a living, no, it is not fun when you get in your freezing car in the morning. No, it’s not pleasant to step out of the shower when it’s drafty. Time spent outside during chilly weather isn’t
