Gear Grinders to host annual charity cruise-in Saturday BY ERIC PEDDIGREE COPY EDITOR
E
nthusiasts will be wiping the winter dust off their classic cars to help a local charity Saturday at the Cressona Mall. The Gear Grinders Hot Rod Association will host its annual cruise-in from 2 to 6 p.m. at Advance Auto Parts. There is a $3 registration fee and proceeds from the event benefit Hillside SPCA. While the event is free to attend, visitors will be asked to make a donation. Gary Sinton, president of Gear Grinders, said not only is the day a chance to help a local charity but also a good excuse to get the car ready for the driving season. “Springtime, everyone is starting to get their cars out of the garages,” he said, adding there are no restrictions on the type and age of the cars. Sinton said this is the smaller event for the club. He said the cars will not be cruising in or around the lot and will not be judged. The event is an opportunity for owners to show and talk about their cars in a showroom-type atmosphere. The event usually pulls in about 30 to 50 cars each year, Sinton said. He said the club is hopeful for sunny skies this year. “There is nothing worse than having it pour down rain,” he said. In addition to the cars, the event will feature music, food, raffles and door prizes. Sinton said a representative from Hillside SPCA may also be on hand to promote the shelter and sell merchandise to raise additional funds. This is not the first time Gear Grinders has chosen Hillside SPCA to be its beneficiary. Sinton said the club votes every year on a charity. In previous years, the club has donated to the Pottsville Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army and Schuylkill Women in Crisis, among others. But Sinton said Hillside is always among the popular choices. “We have a vote and usually Hillside is the one we end

While the cruise-in is used to help the community, the main attraction is the cars. “When you have a car like that, you like to show it off but you don’t like people touching them,” Sinton said jokingly. The Gear Grinders Hot Rod Association will be hosting its big cruise at South Cass Fire Company on Aug. 3. Sinton said the club expects about 100 cars for the event, which will feature judging and trophy presentations.

Iron Man’s a little anxious, winded, but still able to show his mettle The third “Iron Man” movie, the finale to this trilogy of Marvel marvels, is the jokiest and cutest of them all. Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) gets a kiddie sidekick, for Pete’s sake. It’s also far and away the most violent, with a “Die Hard” body count, bombs and bullets, and Stark trashtalking evil henchmen about how he’s going to kill them. Writer-director Shane Black, who cut his teeth on “Lethal Weapon” movies and directed Downey in one of his best pre-”Iron Man” pictures, “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” brings a more violent, angst-ridden sensibility to the franchise. And a less subtle one. “Ever since that big dude with the hammer dropped out of the sky,” a character apologizes, remembering Thor’s arrival and “The Avengers,” “subtlety’s kind of gone out the window.” So there is not one Iron Man this time, and not just two (the War Machine suit, worn by Stark’s military pal played by Don Cheadle). No, as the trailers promise, there are many — suits that can be summoned, video game fashion, in mid-fight, mid-flight. That sort of deus ex machina robs the fights-to-the-death of their fear of death and the film of some of its highstakes urgency. A new terrorist foe — “I prefer the term ‘teacher’ ” — is assaulting America. The Mandarin (Ben Kinglsey, big and broad), who isn’t Chinese, is threatening the president (William Sadler), the country and Iron Man. And when the bad guy’s minions take down Tony Stark’s bodyguard (Jon

Favreau, who also directed the first two “Iron Man” movies), Tony vows “good oldfashioned revenge.” That’s when Tony’s Fortress of Malibu is destroyed. That’s when Tony’s beloved Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) is endangered. (These aren’t spoilers, folks. It’s all in the trailer.) This “Iron Man” is about the “demons” we create through the people we wrong, and Black (who co-wrote the script) frames all this within a Tony flashback, to the day he scored a one-night-stand with a scientist (Rebecca Hall) and stiffed a think tank founder (Guy Pearce). Downey is as on the money as ever as Stark, punching up pithy punchlines — “BILL me” to a bloodthirsty reporter who eggs him into trashing the guy’s cellphone. Stark criss-crosses the country, from Tennessee to Miami, and suffers anxiety attacks along the way. A kid (Ty Simpkins of “Insidious”) with a Disney Channel haircut to make up for his hardluck life in Tennessee pitches in to help. A pushy, inquisitive child and these red-eyed minions of evil whose wounds heal in an instant would give anybody heart palpitations. The third-act twists are pretty easy to see coming, and the action beats feel preordained. But one bit of business involving people sucked out of Air Force One is the film’s jaw-dropper, a stunt/ effect that is as epic as anything this genre has produced. And the broad, goofy jokes and one-liners land — even if
they feel a little winded this time. Examining Downey in close-up, you can fret that he’s aging through his best years in an action franchise that doesn’t tax him the way movies like “The Singing Detective” and “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” once did. But he helped make comic book pictures safe for great actors. And if he pops up as the face in the suit in an “Avengers” movie or two, I don’t think anybody would begrudge him that. The suit has fit him, and he has filled the suit to perfection. “Iron Man 3,” a Marvel Studios/Disney release, is rated PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence throughout, and brief suggestive content. Running time: 130 minutes. ★★½
“Kon-Tiki” If there’s only one thing to be remembered from “KonTiki,” an engrossing fictional recounting of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl’s famed voyage across the Pacific on a balsa wood raft, it’s this: The man didn’t know how to swim. This fact — and the deepseated fear that must have haunted him on his aquatic adventures — throws into sharp relief a derring-do that would challenge even the most seasoned ocean enthusiasts. His ambitions are captured in all of their sea-going glory in this stirring drama, nominated for this year’s foreign language Oscar (though the version being released in the U.S. is in English; the filmmakers made a separate version in Norwegian). The year is 1947 and Heyerdahl (Pal Sverre Hagen), an amateur ethnographer, is

He, and a few who trust in his vision, construct a huge raft in the style of indigenous Peruvians and set sail in an attempt to show it could be done. Their voyage became a media sensation at the time and even led to a documentary, also called “Kon-Tiki,” that won the Oscar for best documentary in 1951. (In 1969, he would cross the Atlantic in a papyrus boat and that was the subject of a 1972 film, “The Ra Expeditions”) But that first trip also was responsible for the breakup of Herydahl’s marriage and tested the loyalties of the friends who made up his crew. In the sense that it’s about one man against the elements, “Kon-Tiki” echoes “Life of Pi.” Yet, whereas the
kid at the heart of “Pi” is at the mercy of the wind and ocean and has no idea where he’s going, Heyerdahl wants to control both and has a firm destination in mind. Hagen brings a palpable sense of determination to the part of Heyerdahl, but it’s no one-man show. Anders Baasmo Christiansen as engineer Herman Watzinger, a man who seems never to have set foot on a boat before, has the right amount of nervous bravado while Gustaf Skarsgard, Jakob Oftebro, and Tobias Santelmann, playing more experienced sailors, possess the laid-back intensity of men who know what they’re doing — even if, at times, they may question the

man they’re doing it for. Beautifully shot (in the Maldives, Thailand, Malta, Sweden and Norway) by directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg and cinematographer Geir Hartly Andreassen, “Kon-Tiki” has the look and feel of a big, bracing adventure. It skirts many of the emotional issues (you’d think the father of two would have been a bit more torn apart by the collapse of his marriage) in favor of high adventure with hungry sharks and monster storms. But then you remember Heyerdahl didn’t know how to swim, and all those pesky little details disappear under the surging waves. “Kon-Tiki,” a Weinstein Company release, is rated PG-13 for a disturbingly violent sequence.
