henandoah’s reputation of being an ethnically diverse town will be on full display Saturday during the Parade of Nations and Heritage Day celebration. More than 20 nations will be represented this year, including the additions of the Dominican Republic and Honduras. The annual event will begin at 10 a.m. with the parade, then move to Girard Park for the Heritage Day festivities. Unlike traditional summer block parties, the event celebrates the different groups of people who make up the community in Shenandoah, according to Mary Luscavage, Downtown Shenandoah Inc.’s Main Street manager. DSI is the sponsor of the event. “It is a true Heritage Day,” Luscavage said. The parade is made up of contingents from all of the participating nations, along with a float depicting America as a melting pot. The float will be decorated with dolls representing the different nations and American historical figures Betsy Ross and Uncle Sam. The Shenandoah Combined Veterans Group was selected as honorary grand marshal. The veterans will lead the parade with an antique fire bus. “It’s our way of honoring everything they did for us and our country,” Luscavage said. 2

Recording artist John Stevens and Doubleshot polka band will perform from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. People are invited to tour the downtown area, which will be decorated by various ethnic groups. “We celebrate our ethnicity because we are known for our diversity and ethnicity,” Luscavage said. POTTSVILLE (PA.) REPUBLICAN HERALD

In ‘World’s End,’ a sudsy apocalypse “The World’s End” feels like a grand last hurrah, a victory lap for those “Hot Fuzz/Shaun of the Dead/Spaced” mates Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and their writer/director-partnerin-crime, Edgar Wright. A rollicking, drunken romp through beer, weepy codependency and alien pod people conspiracy theories, it allows these no-longer-lads one last chance to be lads — playing guys who have aged out of getting drunk and hitting every pub in town, but trying to recapture that past. That’s what Gary King (Pegg) wants. We’ve met him recalling one epic pub crawl, “the Golden Mile,” from his youth — 12 pubs in Newton Haven — all in one night. Gary “The” King tells this tale at rehab. But that gets him to thinking. He and his four mates (Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan) never got from “The First Post” (a pub) to “The World’s End” (the 12th). Even though they’re all 40somethings, Gary rounds them up and somehow convinces each to join him for one last shot at glory. “It’s about closure!” Is it? Can a car salesman, a Realtor, a lawyer and contractor revive past sudsy glory? Can they forget the reasons they fell out with Gary — who hasn’t changed wardrobe, cars or drinking habits over the decades? “I haven’t had a drink in over sixteen years!” Andy (Frost) sneers. They can. It doesn’t matter than most of their pubs have fallen victim to “Starbucking” — turned into corporate McPubs, even if the same 1993 publican is behind the bar. Our five beer-lovers may not hold their liquor as well and have families and different lives in the present and bad memories (Gary doesn’t)

MOVIE REVIEWS of the past. But they’re in it til “the bitter end. Or the lager end.” And just as the alcohol-astruth-serum starts to kick in and people reveal their failings and disappointments, something sci-fi happens and they’re having to brawl their way from one pub to the next for their very survival. Wright stages the nightmarish night of drunken fights with not-human barflies with skill. But this is a movie that floats by on dazzlingly silly banter and wellslung slang. A legendary encounter with two blondes with a redhead in between was “a marmalade sandwich,” a random line from Shakespeare’s “A Winter’s Tale” about a bear exiting morphed into their “time to leave” catch-phrase. “Let’s Boo Boo.” Each character faces a moment of truth from his past, some of those moments revolving around the sister (Rosamund Pike) of real estate fussbudget Oliver (Freeman). The energy flags, a common failing of exercises in nostalgia. But in reviving, one last time, the formula that made “Shaun of the Dead” such a blast, Pegg, Frost & Wright put an exclamation point on the truism that Douglas Adams first explored in “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and that these three underlined with “Shaun” and now “The World’s End.” When the apocalypse comes, there’s no place better to ride it out than in your friendly neighborhood pub. “The World’s End,” a A Focus Features release, is rated R for pervasive language including sexual references. Running time: 107 minutes. ★★★

“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” Start with a heaping helping of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Throw in some “Percy Jackson,” a dash of “Twilight,” a spoonful of “The Vampire Diaries” and a sprinkling of “Harry Potter,” and you end up with “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” the latest in a seemingly endless series of coming-of-age stories set against a fantasy/horror backdrop. In the 1980s and ’90s, teenagers usually served only one purpose in scary movies: To get slaughtered. Today, though, they increasingly make their way into young adulthood by vanquishing supernatural evil. I suppose that’s progress. This adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s first book in her popular series of young adult novels is wildly ambitious in scope and looks far better than its relatively modest budget of $60 million. The story focuses on Clary (Lily Collins), a teenage girl living in Brooklyn with her mother who discovers she’s the latest descendant in a line of Shadowhunters, halfhuman, half-angel creatures ordained to protect humanity from demons, vampires, slimy tentacled things and practically every other monster you can think of. The creatures live among us, invisible to ordinary mortals, and are kept in check by the Shadowhunters, attractive tattooed teens who wear lots of black leather: The angelfaced Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower), who is supposed to be a fearsome warrior but is so pale and skinny you keep wanting to give him something to eat; the surly Alec (Kevin Zegers), who resents Clary’s presence for reasons that are totally not what you think; and the intrepid Isa-

Lily Collins stars as Clary, left, and Jared Harris as Hodge Starkweather in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.” belle (Jemima West), who is defined primarily by her mean magical whip. Instead of frontloading “City of Bones” with one of those expositional voice-overs that explains the movie’s universe to the audience, director Harold Zwart (“The Karate Kid” remake) and screenwriter Jessica Postigo decide to allow us to gradually discover it through Clary’s eyes. There are neat little touches, such as the revelation that Johann Bach was a Shadowhunter who composed a piece of music that compels any demon that hears it to shed its human disguise. There are some genuinely creepy set pieces, such as a visit to a run-down hotel inhabited entirely by vampires and an encounter with a kindly witch (“The Shield’ s” CCH Pounder) that takes a sudden and scary turn. “City of Bones” contains the requisite love triangle, this one involving Jace, Clary and her sweet-natured pal Simon (Robert Sheehan), who doesn’t even try to hide his longstanding crush on her. Although it is aimed squarely at teens, the movie has a refreshingly laidback attitude toward sexuality: When the heroes visit a powerful war-

lock named Magnus (Godfrey Gao), he greets them in his underwear and immediately starts macking on Alec. There are moments of surprisingly effective horror (including a snarling Rottweiler that turns out to be something far more menacing), and Lena Headey, as Clary’s mother, gets to throw down against two baddies in a scene that makes her character Cersei Lannister in “Game of Thrones” seem like a frail dandelion. But Clare’s almost 500-page book was dense in history and mythology. Even well into its second hour, “City of Bones” is still having to explain who exactly the evil Valentine (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) is or why Hodge (Jared Harris), who is to the Shadowhunters what Rupert Giles was to Buffy, is unable to step outdoors. And I haven’t even mentioned the werewolves or the portal into another dimension. Near the end, as the movie cuts back and forth furiously

between a swordfight, flamethrowers, razor-sharp boomerangs, dungeons, demons made of glowingredashandswarms of evil birds, I realized I had completely lost track of what was going on in this nutty, overstuffed picture. But I can’t say I was bored, either. Only the ending, which leaves about fivedifferentplotlinesdangling a la the carbonite Han Solo in “The Empire Strikes Back,” was truly irritating. Plans for the second film are already underway, with a targeted release date of 2014. But unlike the Harry Potter series, which managed to cross over far beyond the books’ readers, “The Mortal Instruments” franchise is strictly for the initiated. They will no doubt love it. Everyone else will be flummoxed. “The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones,” a A Screen Gems release, is rated PG for Vulgar language, violence, gore, frightening demonic imagery, adult themes. Hitting multiple royals beats odds

Dear Mark: Last night, 8/9/13, I was playing the quarter progressive Double Double-Bonus Poker at Red Rock Casino here in Las Vegas. I held three cards and hit the royal for more than 2K. On the very next hand, I was dealt two royal cards. I hit the deal button and hit another royal for another 2K (plus 1 cent.) I had never seen or heard of anyone getting consecutive royals before but am glad it happened to me! I just thought you should know, plus I like to brag. James M.

While working slots in the early ’80s, I once paid off a consecutive royal flush. The kicker was that the player had to invest just five, and not 10 quarters. The reason why was that once we paid off his jackpot, it was standard procedure for the casino, in this case Yours Truly, to insert five of our own quarters to clear the machine and let the winning player play through on our dime (quarters). As for your wife’s triple royal night, Mark, how about this extraordinary event from 20 years ago. According to the Reno Gazette Journal on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1993, Stevey Tyler hit three $4,000 royal flushes on separate video poker machines at Scolari’s Food and Drug on Lakeside Court on Sunday afternoon. The Nevada Gaming Control Board investigators closed the machines for an inspection but found no evidence of tampering.

Although not mentioned in the RGJ article, the scuttlebutt, as I remember it, was that they were consecutive. The improbable odds of hitting three consecutive royal flushes would be 40,000 times 40,000 times 40,000, which comes to 1 in 64 trillion. This makes hitting the Powerball at 1 in 175,223,510 easy pickins.

would just hit against a dealer Ace. Otherwise, Dave, split against everything else. By the way, Dave, readers of this column are always on the lookout for casinos that offer the best blackjack rules. So, while we’re on the subject of splitting aces, always look for a casino that has the favorable rule of allowing you to re-split them.

Dear Mark: I had always heard that when playing blackjack you always split aces. Does that also include when the dealer has an Ace? Are there any exceptions to this rule? Dave A. Correct basic strategy dictates that when dealt a pair of Aces, always split them, even when the dealer shows an Ace. There is one lone exception. If you are playing European-style blackjack where the dealer does not give himself a hole card, you

Convert tapes to CDs BY DON LINDICH MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS

Q:

Could you please let me know the easiest and, of course, cheapest way to convert my audio musical tapes to a CD? I have a big collection of those tapes which I want to restore on CDs. The easiest way requires a Mac computer. I will provide an overview with both Mac and Windows so all readers will be able to benefit from this column. The Griffin iMic is an inexpensive, easy-to-use USB audio converter. You can connect it to a cassette deck or portable cassette player with a stereo RCA or a miniplug cable. The iMic sells for $40 or less. This will import the music to the software of your choice on either a Mac or a PC. If you are a PC user you can also get a USB cassette deck converter on Amazon for about $17. These converters look like a Sony Walk-

SOUND ADVICE man, but connect via USB and transfer music to the computer. If you are a PC user you need to make a judgment call as to whether you will get better quality from using your existing tape deck with the iMic vs. the simplicity of the portable converter. If you have a very good cassette player or even something high-end like a Nakamichi or a Revox cassette deck you will get better sound quality by using your high quality player with the iMic. Once the music is imported into the editing software it will be one long audio stream. You have to split and rename the tracks song by song, clean up the sound quality if desired and then organize the music in your

library for eventual transfer to your iPod or to CD. It is here that a Mac has a big advantage. You can download Griffin Technology’s free Final Vinyl software to accomplish this task, and it is much better than any free program available for Windows. As you may guess by the name, Final Vinyl excels at transferring vinyl records but does a fine job for other audio sources, too. You can learn more about the iMic and Final Vinyl at www. griffintechnology.com. Audacity is a free audio editor and recorder that works with Windows. The learning curve is much higher than Final Vinyl and I have never much cared for it, but it gets the job done. You can see and download Audacity at http://audacity. soundforge.net.
