DVERTISING ART is very popular today and prices keep rising. Collectors want old examples with good graphics, recognized products and great condition. A small amount of restoration is OK. Anything that mentions a product for sale is considered “advertising,” even labels on bottles and cans. Most companies keep the look of their ads the same for many years. Hires Root Beer used a small child in a bib and a distinctive type style for the word Hires. In 1915, it used the googly-eyed man called Josh Slinger, the soda jerk. He was indeed googly-eyed. But most of Hires ads had few pictures, just descriptions of its health values or the good shape. This tin sign, probably made in the 1920s, features an attractive flapper girl. She is enjoying a glass of Hires Root Beer. If you look closely, you can read the tiny word “good” before the slogan, “and it’s always pure. Hires in bottles.” Hires was developed by pharmacist Charles Hires in 1876, but root beer was already a known drink. He improved the taste of a health drink that was made with many herbs including sassafras oil, a plant root extract. In 1960, sassafras was banned because it contained a car-

cinogen. Later, they found a way to remove the harmful chemical and still preserve the flavor, so it was still used. Hires Root Beer was a leading drink, but the company has been bought and sold so often the drink is now almost out of production. Old Hires advertising is hard to find today, but beware of the pottery mug with a baby wearing a bib. Reproductions are easy to find.

Small balcony? Even a narrow area can be turned into a great place to relax
You can still enjoy the space
By Helen Carefoot
The Washington Post
When interior designer Kyra Williams lived in Paris, she was always happy to see fellow city dwellers perched on their balconies, enjoying coffee with friends. “If you’re in the heart of an amazing city, your apartment is probably really tiny, so real estate is important,” says Williams, lead designer for San Francisco-based Bungalow, a home rental start-up. Even the smallest, narrowest balcony can be a great place to relax and entertain. “Consider your balcony part of the square footage of your space and really utilize it.” Here’s how to transform your postage-stamp-size balcony into an outdoor oasis, according to experts. Decide how to use the space “Whenever I go into designing a space, I really try to think about how the people living in
that space are going to use it,” Williams says. The needs of someone who aims to create a cozy reading nook for one will differ from those of someone looking to host outdoor gatherings. If you want a space to fill more than one role, consider multifunctional or adjustable pieces that can be moved around as needed. To get the most seating out of narrow, rectangular balconies, Williams suggests lining a long bench with cushions. “That way you could seat five or six people, whereas a table and chairs can really only seat two.” Storage benches such as Ikea’s wood-stained Applaro bench ($70, ikea.com) can be used to stow items and can be repositioned (keep in mind that it’s best to store items inside if you’re worried about them staying dry). For those on a shoestring budget, she says, you could buy stackable storage crates from Michael’s and layer with cushions to create DIY seating and storage. Cynthia Hoyt, the Atlanta-based creative director of the Darling Down South blog, agrees: “You can turn basically anything into a dining situation,” she says. (She once threw
a tablecloth over a moving box for a temporary outdoor dining surface at an old apartment.) If you’re faced with the choice of a table set or lounge seating area due to space constraints, Hoyt would prioritize a casual seating area and add a small table, especially if you already have a dining area inside. For long, narrow balconies that wouldn’t fit a table and chairs comfortably, Williams suggests a bar top that either slides on top of the railing or stands against it (check with your landlord or condo association to see whether it’s OK to hang items off the balcony or on the railings). She checks Etsy for bar tops that are customizable and made by local artisans. “You can fit more people without giving up any of the floor space,” she says. Williams suggests Christopher Knight Home’s Caribbean Three-Piece Acacia Wood Patio Bar Set ($279.99 at Target) or Ikea’s Applaro set of two bar stools and a table ($229). She also likes the classic bistro look she saw so much of in Paris, if space allows. “If you have a

Williams personally loves red geraniums, which she spotted in windowboxes everywhere in Paris, and herbs. To find out what plants are suited to the climate you live in, check with local nurseries for recommendations and consult the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Plant Hardiness Zone map. Hoyt suggests considering

These pieces make the space look more complete and create extra cushion underfoot. “Rugs are your friend,” Hoyt says. “Buy as many affordable rugs as you can and layer those different textures. That way you have a little more visual interest and it starts to feel more unique to you.”

Don’t cut corners: Make wise pruning choices
S
O YOU PLANTED trees this spring. The first years those trees are in the ground, while permanent limbs are developing, are going to be important to their future strength and beauty. Pruning is one way to direct development, and the best time for this is when trees are small. Small cuts made on small trees leave correspondingly small wounds. Help your young tree to develop a sturdy trunk. For most trees, this means allowing only a single stem to be the main axis. Let this stem be the most vertical, strongest one. Shorten, cut away, or bend down any other stems competing for the role of top dog. If you plan to restrict the height of your tree by pruning, begin before the tree reaches its desired height. Stop upward progress of that central stem by cutting it back to a weak, more horizontally oriented branch. Done early on, only a small cut is needed and the crown of the tree will retain a natural upward flow to gradually smaller branches rather than looking as if it has been butchered. Also help your young tree build up a framework of permanent side branches that are strong, well-connected, and, of course, look good. Do not select permanent branches
starting too low on the trunk, though, because the distance of any of these limbs from the ground never changes. Gaze along the trunk to select main branches, keeping in mind three ideals: successive main branches should be spaced 6 to 12 inches apart, spiral up the trunk, and come out at wide angles. The spacing and spiral arrangement ensure that each branch has sufficient nourishment and enough room to develop. The wide angle is a sign of a strong union. If a narrow-angled branch is particularly well-positioned, bend it down or else cut it all the way back when it is only a few inches long; a wide-angled shoot will often grow in its place. Continue to select main branches over the first few years that your young tree develops. As these main branches grow, they will develop their own side branches. For side branches that are strong and have sufficient room to develop, choose those that are at least 2 feet away from the developing trunk and are thinner than the main branches themselves. Some young trees are reluctant to branch. Coax branching of the leading stem on such a tree by cutting it back by a few inches when it has grown a few inches above where you want branching.

A shoot from the remaining top bud usually continues growing nearly vertically, as a continuation of the leading stem, while one, perhaps two, lower buds grow out as side branches. If necessary, repeat this procedure at each level that you want branching. Your young tree will undoubtedly grow many other branches in addition to those that you have selected to become permanent ones. Leave most of these for awhile, especially weak ones. They help feed and thicken the trunk and guard the thin new bark against sun burn. If any of these temporary branches begin to grow too much, pinch back their tips occasionally. Remember, though, that tem-
porary branches are temporary; cut them off completely after a few years. Now don’t go wild pruning your young trees. We want our young trees to grow, and any pruning slows growth. Do only what pruning is absolutely necessary, no more.

Long-term U.S. mortgage rates dip down to 3.82% U.S. long-term mortgage rates fell for the sixth consecutive week, with the key 30-year loan average running below 4% and at its lowest point since September 2017. The declining rates have been a boon to potential purchasers in the spring home buying season, and the number of homeowners seizing the opportunity to refinance mortgages jumped this week. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday the average
rate on the 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage dipped to 3.82% from 3.99% the previous week. By contrast, a year ago the benchmark rate stood at 4.54%. The average rate for 15year, fixed-rate home loans declined this week to 3.28% from 3.46%. Applications for refinancing jumped 6% in the week ending May 31 from a week earlier, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers
Association. U.S. trade disputes with China and Mexico weighed on investors in the U.S. stock market, who nervously watched for developments. The trade battles threaten to stifle economic growth in the U.S. and around the world.
