MUCH MORE THAN BEACHES…

Town of Dennis SO

With beaches on both its north side and south side, Dennis is a beachcombers’ dream.

Dennis has some of the most beautiful beaches on Cape Cod, including 16 on the ocean and two on freshwater lakes. One-time, weekly or seasonal beach parking passes can be purchased at the Dennis Town Hall.

But there’s much more to the Dennis area than its beaches. Think biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking, wind surfing, walking trails, shopping, eating, museums, and theater.

“There is just so much to do,” enthused Kathleen M. DeMeyer, owner/president of Encore Construction Company Inc. and a member of the Town of Dennis Tourism Committee who has lived in the Dennis area full time for 39 years.

Her favorite aspects of the area are its quaint and relaxed atmosphere, proximity to the ocean and numerous hiking and biking trails.

According to town.dennis. ma.us/about-dennis, Dennis combines its traditional New England heritage with modern day conveniences. The villages of East Dennis, Dennis and South Dennis feature scenic historic districts hailing back to whaling days, while tranquil tree-lined streets meander through Dennis Port and West Dennis.

Numerous recreation trails and well-developed business districts throughout the villages are features of the area.

Dennis is located in the mid-Cape area; its beaches and activities draw visitors from near and far.

Upcoming events include “resurrecting an old tradition called ‘Festival Days’ which will begin with the Antique

Car Parade on August 25th and culminating with Fireworks on September 1st,” DeMeyer said, adding “there will be many other events during that week.”

And for residents of the Springfield area, Dennis is but “a gas tank away,” DeMeyer said.

For those interested in history, consider a visit to a museum or historic site. The 1736 Josiah Dennis Manse Museum in Dennis was built in 1736 for the Rev. Josiah Dennis, for whom the town is named. The salt box house was purchased by the town in 1967 and has been fully restored. It contains a maritime room with a diorama of the Shiverick shipyard and has various items associated with the days of clipper ships.

The 1801 Jericho Historical Center in West Dennis is an historic house built in 1801 by Capt. Theophilus Baker. Exhibits include antiques, glassware, costumes, tools and driftwood zoo.

The 1867 West Dennis Graded School House and Maritime Museum highlights local sea captains, their ships, their tales and navigational tools. The last graded school in Dennis features an 1860’s school room.

Scargo Tower in Dennis Village began as a tourist observatory in 1874. Made of wood, it was destroyed in a gale two years later. Rebuilt again of wood, it burned in 1900. The current cobblestone tower opened in 1901 with a 30-foot tower on the highest hill in

the mid-Cape. With the right weather conditions, visitors can see from the lower cape to Provincetown and as far west as Plymouth.

Area art galleries include the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis features works by past and present artists. There is a Sculpture Garden, yearround classes for children and adults, special events and unique gifts by local artists in the museum shop.

In Dennis, options abound for shopping for crafts, clothes, furniture, home furnishings, gifts and consignment items. And when it’s time for a meal or snack, enjoy the many offerings for breakfast, lunch or dinner in casual or fine dining settings. And don’t miss the ice cream and candy stores.

Another stop to consider is Mill Stone Pottery in Dennis, that offers both functional and decorative pieces. Each one is wheel thrown and/ or hand-built using slabs, extrusion or hand-pressed techniques. Both production and one-of-a-kind pieces are made by hand with care and attention to detail.

Recreation and family fun include area businesses that offer go carts, miniature golf, standup paddle boating, kiteboarding and windsurfing.

HOW TO MAKE SUMMER TRAVEL MORE AFFORDABLE

Travel smart from the start by learning

The U.S. Department of State will be on site with experts from the Boston Passport Agency to answer all your passport and travel safety questions.

how to get your U.S. passport and learning about your destination well in advance of your trip!

D· CHANGE YOUR TIMELINE.

riving to a vacation destination rather than flying can save travelers lots of money on costly airfare. Summer is peak travel season. Whether vacationers plan to travel internationally or domestically, they can expect to pay top dollar as they head off for parts unknown. Much has been made of inflation over the last yearplus, as the cost of seemingly everything has risen considerably since early 2022. And the cost of travel has seemingly increased by an even greater percentage than the cost of groceries. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index indicates the cost of airfare increased by more than 25 percent between January 2022 to January 2023. Though travel has never been inexpensive, the rising costs noted in the Consumer Price Index have scared many consumers into staying home. However, consumers who want to travel but don’t want to break the bank can try various strategies as they seek to get out of the house this summer.

· TRAVEL DOMESTICALLY.

With airfare costs skyrocketing, now might not be the most budgetfriendly time to travel overseas. Thankfully, would-be vacationers can still get away. Average gas prices in early spring 2023 hovered around $3.43 per gallon, which is nearly $1 less per gallon than the year prior. By driving to their destinations, vacationers can save substantial sums of money and also maintain greater control of their trips, something that isn’t always so easy in an era marked by routine flight delays and cancellations.

If a faraway dream destination beckons, travelers might still be able to make it work if they have the flexibility to alter their timelines. Rather than taking a Monday through Friday off from work, consider starting and ending a vacation in midweek. It’s generally less expensive, and sometimes significantly so, to fly midweek compared to flying Friday-Monday.

· CASH IN YOUR CREDIT CARD POINTS.

Another way to ensure summer travel doesn’t put a big dent in your savings is to utilize cash back rewards or airline miles linked to your credit card account. If you have a lot of cash and/or miles saved up, the coming summer of expensive travel could be the ideal time to use them.

· CONSIDER A HOMESTAY OVER A HOTEL.

Homestays, which includes bookings through sites such as Airbnb and VRBO, are typically much less expensive to book than hotel rooms. But homestays also save travelers money on food, as many listings feature fully operational kitchens that can help travelers avoid dining out three times per day over the duration of their trips.

Travel is a significant expense as consumers continue to confront sharp increases in prices on various goods and services. However, it’s still possible to vacation without breaking the bank.

SUMMER ROAD TRIPS TO MetroWest BOSTON

Quick adventures to explore the hidden gems of Massachusetts

As we start planning for summer fun in the sun, consider a little road trip escape to MetroWest Boston. With 19 towns just 30 minutes from Boston, this region offers charming yet economical hotels and hidden gems to explore. Here are two itineraries to put a smile on your face and a pep in your step.

Get Moving!

Take a deep breath of summer at one of the region’s eight state park recreation areas, like Hopkinton State Park whose 1,500 acres are crisscrossed by hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking trails around a boating lake with beaches, stocked fishing, and more. Once you’ve built up an appetite, head to Level99 for a great meal and craft beer at the inhouse taproom, then test your friends with their unique take on mental and physical escape rooms and challenges, or get a little competitive at MetroWest’s newest attraction: Puttshack— where mini golf meets high

The appeal of camping is undeniable. According to The Business Research Company, a market research and intelligence company, the global camping and caravanning market is expected to grow from just under $40 billion in 2020 to more than $45 billion in 2021. Estimates suggest the market will grow even more in the coming years, reaching $56.6 billion by 2025.

If not, choose a site that you can pull right up to or is just a short, easy walk from the parking lot.

Camping has long been a popular pastime for outdoor enthusiasts, but it may have developed an entirely new group of devotees in 2020. Traditional vacations may not have been possible in 2020, when governments across the globe urged citizens to avoid conventional travel as the world found itself in the throes of a global pandemic. In an effort to overcome cabin fever, many people viewed camping as a safe way to get out of the house while still limiting contact with people from other households. The National Park Service (NPS) recognizes the popularity of camping and urges people to stay safe. Veteran campers and novices alike can benefit from reviewing these safety tips, courtesy of the NPS.

· PLAN AHEAD.

Camping trips may not require hours of scouring travel websites in an effort to find the best deals on flights and hotels. But camping trips still require ample planning. When planning a trip, take into account who’s coming along. Assess their camping skills and physical fitness to determine the most appropriate place to camp. Campers with limited mobility may be best suited for accessible campsites. The NPS urges campers to consider if everyone in the group will be able to make a long hike from the parking lot to the campsite.

· RESEARCH THE CAMPSITE AND SURROUNDING AREA. Know as much as possible about the campsite prior to embarking on your trip. Learn about everything from the local wildlife you may encounter while camping to the condition of surrounding areas, including the altitude, the difficulty of nearby hiking trails and where to go in case of emergency.

· DEVELOP AN EMERGENCY PLAN.

The NPS urges campers to develop an emergency plan, noting that it’s always wise to expect the unexpected when camping. Bring a first aid kit along when leaving the campsite to engage in activities like hiking or fishing. Go over safety protocols before going on a hike, including the need to stay together and remain on the trail at all times. More information about what to do should anyone be injured during your trip is available at www.nps.gov.

· BRING THE RIGHT GEAR.

The NPS notes that each camping trip will have its own equipment needs, which will be dictated by the setting, the time of year of the trip, the difficulty of the terrain, and the duration of the trip. Navigational supplies, sun and insect protection, insulation (i.e., extra clothing and blankets), shelter, flashlights and headlamps, first aid kits, extra food and water, firestarters, repair kits and tools, and a communication device like a smartphone or satellite phone are the essential necessities that should be brought along on all camping trips.

Newport

Avisit to The Classic Coast—nine vibrant and historic towns all sharing some seriously prime New England coastline—is both everything you expect and enjoyably unpredictable. If you’re looking for classic colonial architecture and breathtaking New England landscapes, we’ve got ’em. Trust us. But it’s a feeling you get here of being switched off yet inspired; engaged yet refreshed. There’s no word for it, but it happens every day on The Classic Coast. Newport, Rhode Island, America’s First Resort is known for so many facets of travel. First, our Colonial History, as we have the largest number of “stick homes” which translates into preserved wooden colonial

homes in the country. All thanks to the preservation of these homes by the late Doris Duke, and her creation of the Newport Restoration Foundation.

Secondly, the Gilded Age Mansions, or as they were known in there day as “summer cottages,” preserved, maintained, and providing educational opportunities through their many tours and special events of the eleven properties by the Preservation Society of Newport County.

Lastly, don’t miss one of our “hidden gems,” like the famed Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile path along the beautiful Atlantic Ocean offering a sneak peek of the manicured mansions grounds. Like the Breakers, Marble house, Ochre Court and many more.

onger warmer days mean one thing, spring is making its much-anticipated arrival. And Ulster County is the perfect place to greet winter’s warmer pal.

When you spring into the Catskills, you’ll find waterfalls, flowers, and plenty of room to restore your spirits. Whether it’s family time, friend time or alone time Ulster County has the food, fun and tranquility for the perfect spring renewal escape.

Chase Waterfalls

As temperatures warm, the snow melt pours over the rocks at some of this nation’s most scenic spots. At Minnewaska State Park Preserve, you’ll find five waterfalls and

hikes of varying lengths and difficulty. But trust us, they’re all Instagram-worthy!

The walk to the extremely photogenic Awosting Falls in Minnewaska State Park Preserve is a short 1.5 miles out and back but now is the best time to hike to the highest waterfall in the Shawangunk Mountain: Verkeederkill Falls, in the Sam’s Point section of the Preserve. Please note, that parking Friday through Sunday at Sam’s Point from April 1 through October 31 is by reservation only.

Escape to Bear Hole Brook in the Catskills’ remote Sundown Wild Forest. Managed by New York State DEC, this region has an array of hiking trails that wind through enchanting woodlands, leading to an awe-inspiring waterfall and

stunning views. After all that outdoor adventure, unwind at Wildflower Farms, An Auberge Resort. Blanketed with meadows of native flowers and wild woodlands, Wildflower Farms calls to an adventurer’s spirit. The expansive outdoor grounds include orchards, the namesake farm and indoor and outdoor venues serving source-origin cuisine.

Smell the Flowers

Speaking of farms, Spring is the time Ulster County’s orchard landscapes are awash in pink and white blossoms. Soak in the splendor at Hurd Orchard’s Apple Blossom Festival, April 27 and 28. Grab a craft beverage from the Bar in the Barn and take a VIP Golf Cart tour of the blossoms after the farm is closed. Or arrive early and take the family on the blossom walking tour and enjoy activities like duck races, gem mining and fishing. Families can keep the fun

going with a stay at Rocking Horse Ranch, TripAdvisor’s #1 All -Inclusive Family Resort in the US.

Couples seeking a true retreat will want to check in at The Inn at Kettleboro, located on a 12-acre apple and peach

orchard with spectacular views of the Shawangunk Mountains. Or gather with a group at Watergrass Hill B & B in Gardiner, where you can arrange for your own private sip and learn flower arranging class with a nationally recog-

nized floral designer. AutoCamp Catskills in Saugerties gets in on the flower fun with Eco Printing and making dried flower mobile classes for guests. And tulip bloom is a “thing” in Ulster County with Kelder’s Farm in Kerhonkson and Mohonk Mountain House hosting annual Tulip Festivals.

Enjoy White Water

For a different type of outdoor fun head to Rail Explorers where you’ll cruise in your own pedal-assisted rail car alongside the magnificent Esopus Creek. This fast-running, mountain-fed stream attracts fly-fishing aficionados. Esopus Creek and Catskill Outfitters can outfit you for a day of fishing and guide you to the perfect spot to throw a line.

Stay and relax at East Wind Oliverea with their saunas and their easy access to the McKenley Hollow Trailhead. Or stay and fish at the Shandaken

Inn bordered by the picturesque Esopus Creek, famous for world-class fly fishing. Both are decidedly tranquil, a perfect place to set up your base camp and explore the region while being a welcome respite.

And for a whole other level of relaxation, world-class spa treatments are waiting for you at Emerson Resort & Spa. After a treatment, enjoy their outdoor deck and hot tub with a glass of champagne while you enjoy the sounds of the Esopus Creek in the background.

Whatever you are looking for, your best options to recharge, renew and restore are waiting for you in Ulster County.

Benefits to taking a CRUISE

Vacations come in many forms. Some people want nothing more out of their vacations than to get some rest and relaxation on a beach while others prefer the adventure of traveling to faraway lands and seeing some sights. Would-be vacationers who aren’t sure where they fall on that spectrum might be surprised to learn there’s one type of vacation that provides both R&R and adventure.

· CONVENIENCE:

People who want to jetset around the world don’t

Cruise ships are loaded with luxury amenities that passengers might expect to find in high-end resorts. And because cruise ships typically dock in various ports during their time at sea, travelers who want to experience new and unique cultures can get their fill of adventure.

need a jet to do so. In fact, a cruise ship is a much more convenient way to visit multiple locales on a single trip. Cruise passengers won’t have to worry about checking in and out of multiple hotels, which also saves them the hassle of unpacking and repacking their bags several times during their trips.

· FAMILY-FRIENDLY:

Many cruise lines offer cruise vacation packages that cater to families. Packages vary by cruise line, but such offerings tend to have kid-specific activities planned throughout the trip, affording parents a chance to get some alone time together. Many cruise lines even boast late-night kids’ activities, giving parents a chance to enjoy romantic dinners together.

· VARIETY:

Like resorts, cruise ships come in various shapes and sizes. Some travelers may want the feel of being on a floating city, while others may want something more intimate. Many cruise lines offer both experiences and everything in between.

Cruise vacations make the ideal getaways for those who want to combine R&R with the thrill of visiting exotic locales.

What’s new in Schenectady?

Unbeetable (an arcade, bar and vegan restaurant), Vice & Virtue (upscale dining), the New York Ovals (cricket) and Dinos Alive (an immersive experience).

Plus there are many activities taking place in the coming months: Kid’s Arts Fest (June 1), Jazz on Jay (through the end of the summer), the Schenectady County Pedal-Paddle-Run (May 11), the Schenectady Pride Festival (June 1), Schenectady County Summer Night (July 12), the Freedom Park Concert Series (June through August), the Music Haven Concert Series (June through August) and Harbor Jam (July 20 & 21).

At this time of year “the weather is great for enjoying the outdoors,” said Todd T. Garofano, executive director of Discover Schenectady. “Situated on the shores of the Mohawk River and along the Empire State Trail, there are many opportunities for boating, kayaking or paddleboarding, bicycling, running and hiking or simply strolling downtown and along Jay Street Marketplace for unique shopping and dining.”

Visitors are drawn to the Schenectady area by the many festivals and events throughout the spring and summer as well as by the beautiful parks, trails and waterways. Central Park offers the award-winning Rose Garden; the Empire State Trail winds its way through

the county as does the Mohawk River.

“Schenectady also has a vibrant, authentic restaurant and bar scene that continues to evolve and thrive,” Garofano said, noting the “fantastic Italian staples, Moroccan, Caribbean, Spanish, Mediterranean, classic steak houses and Southern/Cajun.”

And if you like to shop, he recommends Schenectady’s Jay Street Marketplace, “a bustling pedestrian market with many locally-owned, eclectic shops and restaurants.” Visitors can find locally-owned and national-brand stores throughout the county.

History buffs will be interested in the Historic Stockade District, Schenectady County Historical Society, Mabee

Farm, MiSci (The Museum of Science and Innovation), Empire State Aerosciences Museum and the General Electric Realty Plot (GE Plot).

And for those who don’t want to see or do anything but just relax, Garofano suggests relaxing by seeing a show at the historic Proctors Theater or trying their luck at Rivers Casino; others may want to sit along the banks of Mohawk River at Mohawk Harbor, Freedom Park or Lock 9 State Canal Park.

36 HOURS ON MARTHA’S VINEYARD

Step off the ferry and inhale that salt air deeply — that is a feeling that has called visitors back to this island off the coast of southeastern Massachusetts year after year.

FRIDAY

6 p.m.

See colorful cottages. Catch Oak Bluffs, an eclectic town on the island’s northeastern shore, as the sun begins to peek through the ornate cutouts of the gingerbread cottages that have lined the downtown streets for more than 160 years. The brightly colored houses were built by a Methodist movement for their growing community and mimic the tents its members originally gathered in. Many of the 300-plus original cottages can be found in Wesleyan Grove, the historic district encompassing the old campground. Afterward, stroll a few minutes east to admire some of Oak Bluffs’ grandest homes, which line Ocean Park, including the Joe Overton House, a Victorian mansion built in 1875 that was eventually owned by a Black union organizer from the New York City neighborhood of Harlem, for whom it is named today.

7 p.m.

Dine on the harbor

Summer is on full display along Oak Bluffs harbor, where ferries and charter fishing boats pull right up to a dock full of bars and restaurants. Nancy’s Restaurant, a sprawling, multilevel space that has anchored the waterfront for more than 60 years, serves seafood classics like local littleneck clam linguine ($35) and fish tacos ($23) along with Mediterranean staples like fattoush salad ($17). While you wait for your table, head downstairs to

Donovan’s Reef, where Donovan Clarke, for whom the bar is named, holds court, pouring Dirty Bananas (a riff on the mudslide cocktail, $13) every summer, when he travels to the island from Jamaica, part of a robust international summer workforce.

9 p.m.

Dance in a dive bar

Music has long been an integral part of the Vineyard (the island was a folk-music destination in the 1960s, drawing the likes of James Taylor and Carly Simon); these days, there is live music every night of the week during the summer. The Ritz, a year-round dive bar with live music (entry $5), will have you dancing to local bands like Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish and Dukes of Circuit Avenue. Up the block, you can watch the summer crowds from the porch bar at Red Cat Kitchen, where punches (from $17) and nonalcoholic cocktails (about $11) go down easy.

SATURDAY

9 a.m.

Hike peaceful marshes

About 40% of Vineyard land is protected, managed primarily by conservation groups that are seeking to preserve the island’s fragile ecosystem. Much of that land is accessible by public walking trails. Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, more than 200 acres along the island’s northeastern shoreline managed by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, has 4 miles of trails along Sengekontacket Pond that capture nearly everything the island has to offer: woodlands, meadows, ponds, salt marshes and shorelines.

11:30 a.m.

Pack a beach picnic

You’ll need to recharge after your hike, and Mo’s Lunch is worth the short drive to Oak

Bluffs. The small takeaway counter opened in 2021 inside the hall of the Portuguese American Club, the home of a benevolent group with roots in the island’s seafaring Portuguese heritage. You can eat at a few tables inside the hall, but these generous sandwiches and sweet treats are best enjoyed on the beach.

Noon Visit ‘Jaws’ minus the bite

An afternoon at Joseph Sylvia State Beach, a 2.2-mile-long barrier beach that divides Sengekontacket Pond and Nantucket Sound, has options for adventurers and beach bums. Take out a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard to explore the pond. Driving farther down the beach on Beach Road, you’ll cross what locals refer to as Big Bridge and what movie fans will recognize from the scene of a monster shark attack in “Jaws,” which was filmed on the island in 1974. But there is nothing scary about these waters, which make it easy to swim out to nearby sandbars.

3 p.m.

Head up-island

Spend an afternoon in Aquinnah, on the Vineyard’s western tip. The town, the ancestral home of the Wampanoag Tribe, was formerly called Gay Head, named by settlers for its brightly colored clay cliffs, before the residents voted to restore its original name in the late 1990s. You can see the kaleidoscopic patterns from the top of the Gay Head Lighthouse, which was built in 1799 (open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., $6) or from a nearby overlook, where a kiosk shares history about the Aquinnah Wampanoag.

6 p.m.

Slurp oysters on a dock

In the heart of the town of Chilmark, in the island’s south-

western corner, is the fishing village of Menemsha, where boats bring in a fresh catch and the U.S. Coast Guard operates a rescue station. While many of the great island fishing families have largely put down their rods and nets, the Larsen family has for decades owned and operated Larsen’s Fish Market and Menemsha Fish Market, two neighboring places along Dutcher Dock where you can slurp down a dozen oysters.

7 p.m.

Eat a fish dinner

The Homeport has been a cornerstone of Menemsha’s (small) dining scene since 1930, serving lobster dinners and local catch from a spot overlooking Menemsha Pond and Vineyard Sound. The restaurant, which came into new ownership last year, offers three courses for $79: Smoked bluefish pâté, fried fluke and chips, and a slice of peach pie capture the essence of a Vineyard meal. Chilmark is the last dry town on the island, so be sure to bring your own bottle of rosé ($15 corkage fee).

SUNDAY

8 a.m.

Start off with a swim

Many of the Vineyard’s beaches are restricted to town residents with parking and walk-on passes during the summer months; others are privately owned and gated, a system that dates back to a 17th century law intended to encourage property owners to invest in the waterfront. But if you go before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m., anyone can enjoy the calm waters and white sands of Lambert’s Cove Beach in West Tisbury.

10 a.m.

Take in whaling history

Edgartown was the Vineyard’s first colonial settlement and went on to become a major

19th century whaling port. Much of that history — and the wealth it generated — is still visible in the town’s Greek Revival and Federal-style homes that have been preserved over the centuries, with the Old Whaling Church, which was built in 1843 and mimics an ancient temple, as the crown jewel. School, South Water and North Water streets are lined with homes that once belonged to whaling captains, and if you look closely, you’ll see plaques with names of the captains and years the houses were built.

11 a.m.

Embrace the presents

Edgartown is not just nautical history and immaculately groomed roses and hydrangeas pouring over white fences: There is also plenty of shopping to be done. Edgartown Books has titles by local authors and Pulitzer Prize winners, and frequently hosts both for book signings on its front porch. Down the block, the walls of the North Water Gallery display Vineyard life — rolling hills, golden light and working harbors — at its finest. Its collection includes Ray Ellis, whose work appears in the permanent collection at the White House.

1 p.m.

Lunch on the farm

Morning Glory Farm, a five-minute drive from Edgartown, began selling vegetables out of a shed nearly 50 years ago. In the decades since, the Athearn family has transformed it into a market overflowing with island-grown vegetables and flowers, baked goods and prepared foods. The farm stand also sells island-made goods like the award-winning Prufrock cheese, a washed-rind variety from the Grey Barn; yogurt from Mermaid Farm and Dairy; and local sea salts.

SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN

There’s more to see in the Lake George Area than the eponymous “Queen of American Lakes.”

Lake George — about 32 miles long at the southeast base of the Adirondack Mountains in the northeastern portion of New York — certainly has a strong draw for visitors, offering all kinds of water activities like swimming and boating.

“The Lake George Area consists of 13 bodies of water with an abundance of water activities, from white-water rafting on the Hudson and Sacandaga rivers to non-motorized activities on Jab Pond and Garnett Lake to boating, cruising and parasailing on larger lakes like Lake George

and Lake Luzerne,” said Warren County Tourism Director Heather D. Bagshaw.

Warren County was named in honor of Dr. Joseph Warren, an American Revolutionary War general and hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill. It includes the Lake George Area in addition to the cultural hub of the City of Glens Falls and the hometown charm of surrounding southern Adirondack towns and villages.

The summer months in Warren County “bring about a plethora of family fun things to do, outdoor adventure and events to keep everyone busy,” Bagshaw continued. Family-friendly activities include hiking, going to Six Flags Great Escape,

the water is warming up, offering sunbathers and swimmers the perfect opportunity to dip their toes in the lake. Meanwhile, those who want to get lost in the woods will find countless hiking trails that

lead to panoramic views from Adirondack summits.

Need more thrills? Spend the day at a theme park or family fun center where there is no shortage of entertainment.

The restaurants and bar scene in the Lake George Area is a “must experience,” Bagshaw enthused. “The City of Glens Falls is a foodie and nightlife haven for both couples and families. Go Play With Your Food allows for an endless night of board games while enjoying a meal.”

For those who like to shop, the Lake George Area has much to offer including the sprawling Factory Outlets with name brands at discounted prices. The Aviation Mall is a shop, dine and entertainment venue that is a host to national retail chain stores like Target and JCPenny. The

Shirt Factory offers products like candles, clothing and crafted items.

Warren County also has a lot to offer history buffs and museum lovers. “The Lake George Area is a historic battleground-turned-playground where the French and Indian war took place,” Bagshaw said. Step back in time to see live re-enactments, experience musket and cannon fire demonstrations and visit museums.

PLAN THE PERFECT romantic RETREAT

Each couple has a different definition of what constitutes a romantic getaway. For some, simply enjoying a night alone is romantic enough. Others may feel resort vacations are the epitome of romance. When planning a romantic getaway, couples should first identify what is important to them in a trip. Some may want a bevy of activities while others are simply looking to soak up some sun on the beach. A budget also should be established so destinations can be chosen based on affordability. Below are seven tips that can help couples plan the perfect romantic getaway.

· BOOK OUTSIDE OF THE HIGH SEASON. When researching locales, try to avoid peak tourist seasons. For example, you don’t want to be in New Orleans during Mardi Gras or heading to Florida beaches during spring break. Instead, find a quiet time when you can take advantage of amenities and get individualized attention.

· AVOID SCHOOL BREAKS. Another set of dates to avoid is when schools tend to break for holidays or conferences. You may not want to share the resort pool with crying toddlers or splashing adolescents if romance is the name of the game.

· CONSIDER COUPLESONLY RESORTS.

Sandals® has established itself as a leading couplesonly chain of resorts that cater to romantic honeymoons. But you can book stays for just

about any reason without bumping into families and children. Several other brands and individual hotels cater exclusively to adults depending on the destination.

· DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT. Leave devices and digital distractions at home and try to be in the moment as much as possible during the trip.

· GET A ROOM WITH A VIEW. Spend a little more to book a room with a scenic view. If that room also has a balcony where you can sit and enjoy the view, even better. Make a date each night to sit and watch the sunset or get up early one morning and watch the sunrise together hand-in-hand.

· INVESTIGATE CRUISES.

Cruises are beneficial to couples looking to escape stressors because they are floating resorts. Once you pay for your trip, there’s little else you need to do but enjoy yourself.

· RESEARCH SPOTS FOR RELAXING WHEN CHOOSING HOTELS.

A room with a fireplace, hammocks on the beach, dual beach loungers, and loveseats for two are some cozy places to get up close and personal.

Various strategies can help couples plan romantic getaways they won’t soon forget.

CHECK OUT THESE ZOOS

AND AQUARIUMS

What sets the Cayman Islands apart?

It goes beyond its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Only here can you watch dawn rise with the stingrays, explore the world’s most intricate coral reefs, relax in a hammock underneath a casuarina tree, and eat at a five-star restaurant—all in one day.

VisitCaymanIslands.com

Zoos and aquariums can be both informative and entertaining. Without these facilities, millions of people may never get a chance to glimpse marine and land animals, nor learn about their habitats in person.

Aquariums and zoos are located in many major cities throughout the United States and Canada. It’s fun to plan excursions to zoos and aquariums, particularly when they offer special attractions or exhibits.

Today is the day to plan a visit to one of these amazing aquariums and zoos.

· SAN DIEGO ZOO:

Located in California and founded in 1916, San Diego’s zoo is world renowned. It is home to more than 3,700 animals, including giant pandas. Those who are Californiabound should seriously consider including a trip to this zoo in their travel plans.

· GEORGIA AQUARIUM

and tree dwellers in addition to the marine life.

· INDIANAPOLIS ZOO

Midwest visitors can check out this zoo that boasts penguins, seals and rhinos. Many people are drawn here by the opportunity to swim with dolphins.

· RIPLEY’S AQUARIUM OF CANADA

Billed as the best aquarium in Canada, this Toronto facility offers a shark enclosure and a sting ray exhibit. Visitors get the opportunity to be up close and personal with wildlife in unique ways.

Advertised as the largest aquarium in the world, the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta is home to thousands of fish. Other marine animals swim in the aquarium’s eight million gallons of water, including gentle giants like whale sharks.

· LINCOLN PARK ZOO

Located in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, this is one of the country’s only free-admission zoos. Rare Japanese macaques and red pandas are included in this compact zoo landscape that takes up 35 acres of the cityscape.

· NATIONAL AQUARIUM

The National Aquarium is a visually stunning facility within the tourist-centric Inner Harbor neighborhood of Baltimore. There are more than 600 species to admire, and a rooftop rainforest enables visitors to check out exotic birds

· BRONX ZOO

At 265 acres, the Bronx Zoo ranks as one of the largest metropolitan zoos in the world. More than 6,000 animals call the zoo home.

· TENNESSEE AQUARIUM

While many aquariums showcase the diversity of saltwater marine life, the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga focuses on freshwater fish and other animals. Enjoy a touch tank with sturgeon, one of the world’s oldest fish species. It’s also home to more turtle species than any other American zoo or aquarium.

Zoos and aquariums can be part of travel plans this season or any time of year.
