The search for the perfect gift tends to be easier when shoppers are aware of the latest trends, and perhaps no current gifting trend is more popular than giving experiences. According to a recent survey from the travel booking platform GetYourGuide, 77 percent of individuals surveyed indicated they would rather receive experiences than physical gifts come the holiday season. Travel experiences are the most sought-after experiential gifts, as 63 per-
cent of individuals surveyed indicated surprise travel is the experience they would most enjoy receiving. However, a trip to parts unknown is not the only experience shoppers can give, nor is it the only one friends and family would love to receive. The GetYourGuide survey found that tickets to a concert or show (50 percent); outdoor activities, such as skiing, boating or hiking (43 percent); and a food tour or cooking class (36 percent) also made for desirable experiential gifts.

Passageways have been traversed for as long as there has been modes of transportation to get people from Point A to Point B. Although America’s westward expansion spurred on by the Louisiana Purchase wasn’t a road trip for pleasure, travelers were seeking a better way of life and the quest for land and riches, ultimately traveling thousands of miles in such pursuits.
Today, putting miles between oneself and home is a largely recreational pursuit. Road trips can be enjoyable ways to get close-up views of notable sights. When planned correctly, road trips can be affordable vacation options.
ESTABLISH A ROAD TRIP BUDGET
Even if a road trip is a frugal way to travel, it’s important to set a budget for how much you’ll be spending on the road and at various points of interest. A budget can help you decide how far you can go and which types of accommodations to seek.
SCHEDULE A VEHICLE MAINTENANCE APPOINTMENT
Be sure to schedule a pretrip appointment at the service center to give your vehicle a once-over. Change the oil if necessary, have fluids topped off, check the cooling or heating system, and get the tires inspected/ rotated. Also, build a road trip toolkit in case of any emergencies or breakdowns.
TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS
Even if you think you don’t need to, pull off at a rest stop to walk around, stretch and use the restroom. If the next rest stop is far away, you won’t be uncomfortable waiting to reach it. Various smartphone apps list what’s
available at each highway exit as well as rest stops nearby to help you plan accordingly.
BE SMART ABOUT FOOD AND DRINK
If you have to stop for a meal, visit a grocery store instead of restaurants and fast food, as they offer healthier, less expensive options. Supermarkets also have restrooms and seating areas. If you’re bringing along food, pack a cooler with frozen water bottles that can keep the food cold. As the water bottles melt, you will have access to drinks without having to compromise on cargo room.
ESTABLISH A SPECIAL ROAD TRIP TREAT
Plan something that you only enjoy on road trips. This can be an expensive package of chocolates, or dining out at a restaurant chain you don’t have closer to home. It can enhance the anticipation and enjoyment of the long ride.
DOWNLOAD FAVORITE SONGS, PODCASTS AND MORE
Downloading ensures access to the songs and additional entertainment you desire without having to worry if a cellular connection is spotty. Take turns alternating between tunes, audiobooks, movies, and even stand up comedy specials to help pass the time. Also, bring paper maps as backups to GPS systems.
UTILIZE COUPON SITES
Get on sites like Groupon to figure out what to do locally and grab deals in the process.
Road trips are enjoyable options for family or individual travel. Certain tips can make the ride go smoothly.

John Denver sang about “leavin’ on a jet plane,” inspiring many to take a flight to parts known and unknown. Millions of people travel to and from the country every year, with TravelPerk estimating the market size of the United States tourism sector at $798.81 billion in July 2023. Tourism took a hit during the global pandemic, but traveling has since rebounded in a big way. With so many people taking to the roads, rails and skies, shoppers can customize their gift lists when shopping for people who have caught the travel bug. Below are several gifts for those with wanderlust.
· PORTABLE BLUETOOTH SPEAKER:
Music can make the journey more interesting and create a welcoming ambiance upon arrival. People who don’t want to leave home without their favorite tunes often have curated playlists on popular music streaming services. While earbuds are a go-to for personal listening, a portable speaker can provide impressive sound to share songs with friends when relaxing by the pool or traversing trails.
· ERGONOMIC NECK PILLOW: Getting some rest and being comfortable while traveling is key. Ergonomic neck pillows keep the neck and head in a comfortable position when sitting upright during long flights or rides.
· HIGH-QUALITY
PASSPORT COVER:
Consider a passport travel cover that is personalized with a graphic, name or monogram. A cover can protect the passport and keep other travel documents orderly while adding a layer of elegance to travel.
· COMPRESSION PACKING BAGS OR CUBES:
Travelers want to ensure they can bring all their gear when getting away, but sometimes suitcase space can come at a premium. Compression products work like a vacuum sealer, removing air to reduce the space that items take up.
· TRAVEL ADAPTER:
International travel requires contending with different power outlets. In order to use electronic equipment brought from home, travelers will require the right adapter. Look for ones with multiple ports.
· TRAVEL POUCH OR MONEY BELT: Keeping valuables out of the hands of pickpockets means being savvy about safe storage. Travel pouches and money belts are designed to be discrete, and some can be hidden in waistbands or under clothing to protect valuables.
· TRAVEL JOURNAL:
Journals allow travelers to capture memories along the way, with space to jot down experiences and add photos. It can make for a cherished keepsake in the future.
· NEW LUGGAGE:
Every traveler needs a durable piece of luggage or two when the desire to see the world strikes. A rolling, vibrantly colored carry-on ensures the luggage is easily spotted and gives travelers the option to skip baggage check and bring it right on board.
Travel enthusiasts can appreciate gifts that cater to their desire to get away from home.
“Honoring America’s Veterans by providing exceptional care that improves their health and well-being”
Men and women may have more free time after 50 than they had in previous decades. As children grow more independent and even leave the house, parents look to various activities, including travel, to fill their free time. Travel is often seen as a luxury, but heading off for parts unknown can produce some serious health benefits. A joint study from the Global Coalition on Aging and the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies found that women who vacation at least twice a year have a lower risk for heart attack
than those who travel once every six years. The study also found that men who do not take annual vacations are at a significantly higher risk of death (20 percent) and heart disease (30 percent) than those who take time to get away each year. Vacations don’t even need to be long to produce significant, positive results. A 2018 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that a four-day long weekend vacation positively affected well-being, recovery, strain, and perceived stress for as long as 45 days.
Few things can be as distracting as a beautiful day. When the weather outside is welcoming, it can be hard to focus on indoor activities, including work and tasks around the house. Though it’s not advisable to ignore responsibilities at work and at home when the weather outside beckons, it can be beneficial to spend ample time in nature when circumstances allow.
People tend to flock to the great outdoors in spring, summer and fall, and some are even so devoted that they bundle up and head outside throughout winter. Whether they know it or not, people who love to spend time in nature are doing their mental and physical health a lot of good by embracing the great outdoors.
The National Alliance of Mental Illness notes that a growing body of research supports the idea that time in nature is good for mental health. A 2015 study from researchers at Stanford University found that people who walked in a natural area for 90 minutes exhibited decreased activity in a region of the brain associated with depression compared to those
who walked in high-traffic urban settings.
The United Kingdom-based Mental Health Foundation also touts the mental health benefits of the great outdoors. According to the MHF, research shows that people who are connected with nature are more likely to report their lives are worthwhile than those with no such connectedness.
In addition, the MHF notes time in nature has been shown to generate positive emotions, including calmness and joy, and promote greater creativity.
When seeking to capitalize on the mental health benefits of time in nature, people should know that where they spend time outdoors matters. As the Stanford study indicated, time outside in high-traffic urban settings may not produce as profound an effect as time spent in natural settings, like forests, that tend to be more serene. People who live in cities or other densely populated areas can still benefit from time outdoors, but they might experience even greater health gains if they make consistent efforts to spend time in more natural settings.
The physical health benefits of time in nature are equally notable. Perhaps the most obvious physical benefit is related to physical activity. People tend to embrace physical activity when spending time in nature. Hiking, jogging, walking, nature-based recreational activities like kayaking, and playing sports
like basketball or pickleball all involve physical activity, which can help people avoid the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle, such as an increased risk for chronic diseases. More specifically, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation notes the physical health benefits of spending time outside include:
· A stronger immune system
· Lower blood pressure
· Increased energy levels
· Improved sleep
Each of those benefits contributes to greater overall health, making time outdoors among the more beneficial behaviors a person can embrace. There’s no shortage of benefits to spending time in nature. That’s something to keep in mind the next time welcoming weather beckons you to get some fresh air.
uring Prohibition in the 1920’s, bootleggers notched many ways to smuggle illicit alcohol at a time when the federal government banned booze. One of the most notorious trails was in northern Vermont, near the Canadian border. It became known as Smugglers’ Notch.
“The name has been around since back in the bootlegging days of Prohibition,” said Brian Horton, Director of Lodging at Smugglers’ Notch, now known as one of the world’s premiere ski resorts.
“It’s a winding cut through the Green Mountains, with our resort on one side of the notch,” continued Horton. “Many smugglers have been through there. It’s a very narrow pass.
There’s cliffs and caves on either side. It was a perfect location for smuggling.”
Far from building a chasm
between Smuggler’s Notch and the path’s sordid past, Horton is embracing the history and its richness, even giving some trails names reminiscent of the era.
“We do play on the history. A lot of our ski trail names are rooted in that period. We have a trail named bootlegger, another called Harvey’s Hideaway. We have different trail names that insinuate smuggling,” he said.
While Smuggler’s Notch pierces the atmosphere at a rugged elevation of more than 3,600 feet, everything else is on the level—from nightlife in the resort’s four bars to culinary delights in eleven restaurants that include fine dining, a deli, pizza shop and a Ben & Jerry’s. The resort’s main attraction is the skiing. From
beginner and intermediate to expert trails, there are 78 runs on 1,000 acres of skiable terrain. Children can learn on their own and then join their family, or families can learn to ski together, hitting the slopes on three different mountains—Morse for beginners, Sterling for Intermediates and Madonna for experts.
High up in the Green Mountains, skiers enjoy spectacular vistas of snow-covered mountains along with the more intimate beauty of each trail through the woods. Some wind their way quietly through muffled snowpacks and serene silence, but around another turn, there is a thrilling 2,600-foot vertical drop.
“We offer family lessons if you want to learn to ski with your kids. Or we have programming starting at the age of two, called The Little Rascals, and other programs all the way up expert skiers, who sometimes take lessons just to have a guided tour of the mountain,” said Horton.
Regardless of where they end up, all guests start their day on the front porch of their condo. From studio units to sprawling, five-bedroom accommodations, each building is tucked cozily into the side of the mountain. “It’s a lot different than the hotel experience you would find at other resorts. You’re going to most likely have your own cozy fireplace and your own porch in the snow,” he said.
It’s simple to slip on a pair of skis and start skiing right from your room. It’s just as easy to ski back to the condo for lunch or a break from plowing through several feet of fluff.
Smugglers’ Notch is reliably white—noted most likely to always have snow—and the best back country skiing in northeast, thanks to Mother Nature and an industry-leading snow making system.
“We are one of the snowiest destinations in the east, averaging 300 inches of natural snowfall per year because of our proximity to the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. We’re in a sweet spot. Mount Mansfield is also part of our range and creates its own weather climate. Storms just hang around and we squeeze a lot of snow out of them.”
Nostalgia runs deep at Smugglers’ Notch, a place that embraces its historic past and personal ownership, independent of the big chains, corporate bean counters and out of town decision-makers.
Some skiers, already familiar with their way around the woods, know what’s around the bend—others are just plain lucky and happen upon a Maple sugar house where they can learn about harvesting sap and making syrup. There’s another stop on the trail—Billy Bob’s Bear Den. It’s like a cave you can ski through. And then there is the Wild Cat’s Lair.
“We have a bunch of different trails where there are costumed characters and you can ski through their homes. I’ve skied all over the world and I’ve never been anywhere that has such a unique and interactive learning program about nature,” said Horton. Not everyone waxes their skis and hits the slopes, and Smugglers’ accommodates them with an indoor pool, ice skating, a 40 thousand foot ‘fun zone’ with an arcade, laser tag, a warrior course, inflatables and games.
Smugglers’ Notch has a solid calendar of events for the entire winter, from a Holiday Market with Vermont artists to ‘Ignite the Night’ on select Thursdays, featuring fire dancers from Cirque de Fuego and local vendors. There’s a party every weekend during the winter, from s’mores and bonfires to karaoke nights, comedians, magicians and live music.

Fans of fall know that few things can beat the crisp, sunny afternoons of October. The early days of the month bring with them comfortable temperatures and beautiful vistas. Summer’s heat and humidity often are things of the past, and time spent outdoors, whether raking leaves or tailgating at a football game, can be quite pleasant. Here are a few ideas to get out and enjoy fall weather.
Take in the awe of fall foliage up close and personal by visiting a rural area or park a short drive away from home. New York City residents, for example, can head to the Catskills, while Chicagoans can head to White Pines State Park. Different regions of the country will show off their fall colors at different times, and while foliage may be past peak, these two- to three-hour
drives are highly enjoyable.
Check out the chamber of commerce or visitors’ bureau websites of various cities and towns to see what is being offered relatively close by. Many will put on community fairs, festivals and the like.
When the last of the summer tourists depart from ski resort towns and the lull sets in before the winter ski season heats up, visitors to Colorado cities like Aspen or Telluride or the Vermont city of Stowe can find great deals on hotel stays and dine out at relatively empty restaurants.
Long fall weekends are the perfect time to get away before the rush of the holidays sets in soon enough.

ffectionately known as the Emerald Isle due to its rolling green hills and other verdigris landscapes, Ireland is a beautiful country that welcomes millions of visitors each year under normal circumstances. Friendly locals and rich history are two additional reasons why travelers journey to Ireland and immerse oneself in the magic of this seemingly enchanted country.
As an island nation, Ireland may seem large, but in reality it is just 32,595 square miles (84,421 square kilometers). That’s roughly the size of the state of West Virginia. One can drive from the most northern point to the southernmost point in less than eight hours.
While Ireland may not be very large, it certainly packs a punch in regard to its attractions. There is a lot going on in a relatively small amount of space. So much so that travelers may need some inspiration as to the best places to visit. These top spots should be on any visitor’s list.
Those who have only a small time in Ireland don’t want to miss Dublin. It’s the country’s metropolitan hub with culture, music and much more. It also has many points of interest, including the popular Guinness Storehouse. Also in Dublin, visitors may want to check out Kilmainham Gaol, a former prison built in 1796. It has a rich history regarding the country’s long-running resistance to British rule. Those who want the city feel of Ireland will find Dublin doesn’t disappoint.

This is a scenic route that runs through Galway. It stretches 1,555 miles and the craggy Donegal coastline can be seen during the adventure. Galway offers a nice mix of city attractions but also plenty of natural wonders.
While surfers may head to Hawaii or Australia to catch impressive waves, thrill-seekers may want to check out Rossnowlagh as well. It’s one of Europe’s premier surf beaches and a big draw for surfers seeking huge waves.
Travelers seeking a taste of what Ireland looked like decades ago should not miss the Aran Islands. They are accessible by ferry or plane and feature untouched landscapes and noteworthy sights.
Killarney National Park located in County Kerry is an area of rugged mountain country. A focal point of the park is Muckross House and Gardens, a 19th century mansion decorated in period furniture and artifacts. Also on the grounds is the Bourn Vincent Memorial Park donated to the Irish state in 1932.
Visiting Ireland can be an exciting prospect when travelers take in the many beautiful and historic places of interest across the country.
After years living under the cloud of a pandemic that limited where they could travel, many people have a strong desire to head off for parts unknown. As individuals and families ponder business trips or vacations, they may think about bringing a beloved pet along. According to a AAA/Best Western survey, 85 percent of dog owners travel with their dogs. The most popular vacations to let pooches tag along include going to the beach, camping and hiking. As a greater number of people are engaging in more activities with their pets, businesses in the travel and hospitality sector are taking notice and have become more accommodating to four-legged guests. However, there’s still plenty to learn when taking a dog along as a travel companion. Explore these dog travel tips.
· INVEST IN A CRATE.
Even if the dog does not need a crate at home, it’s best to have one for travel. Crates often are required for airline travel and can keep dogs safer in cars. Many hotels also require that dogs be crated in the rooms to keep them out of trouble and prevent damage. A crate should be large enough that the dog can stand, turn and lie down, according to the American Kennel Club.
· CARRY COPIES OF PET-RELATED DOCUMENTS.
turns into a fiasco, checkout isn’t a week away. Shorter trips also help people figure out what works and what will need to change the next time.
· EXPECT SOME FEES. Most hotels charge a fee for doggy clients. A fee of $25 to $50 is pretty standard. There also may be a designated pet floor to minimize the chances that guests without pets will be forced to interact with animals.
· NORMAL BEHAVIOR MAY GO OUT THE WINDOW. A dog who is calm at home may be out of sorts while traveling. It’s not uncommon for a dog unphased by people at home to suddenly be anxious and bark at sounds in a hotel hallway.
· LOOK INTO PETFRIENDLY RESTAURANTS. Smarter Travel says that some hotels won’t allow a guest to keep the dog alone in the room. That means meal time can be tricky. Find restaurants nearby that allow pets. Many that have outdoor seating may enable a leashed pet to stay near the seating perimeter.
· BRING WATER FROM HOME.
When packing food, pack a few gallons of water as well, even though it can be cumbersome. Some dogs with delicate digestive systems may be upset by drinking the local water. A case of diarrhea is compounded further by having to make it into an elevator and outside the hotel in time.
It’s important to prove that the dog is healthy and current on vaccinations. Officials may ask to see documentation when traveling abroad. Some travelers also may want to investigate pet passports. The USA does not require a pet passport, but the European Union pioneered pet passports to enable animals to move more freely throughout its member nations.
· PLAN A SHORT EXCURSION FIRST.
If you have never traveled with a dog before, make the first trip a short one, such as an overnight or two-day stay. This way, if the trip
· TIRE THE DOG OUT. Exercised dogs tend to be well-behaved dogs. Make time to go on long walks, visit a dog park or engage in other activities that will make the pup tired so it’s less likely to cause problems at the hotel.

Many people equate travel with high prices and some overindulgence. After all, for a lot of people, vacations come but once or twice per year. While it’s true the “go big or go home” mantra is never far from the mind while on vacation, ensuring a fun trip does not require emptying one’s wallet. The world has plenty of affordable destinations for those willing to do their research and think outside of the box. Plus, even locales billed as expensive can be made more affordable with some smart travel tips.
National parks across North America are budget-friendly destinations. These parks boast incredibly scenic vistas and plenty of activities for outdoors enthusiasts. Most feature modest entrance fees and affordable adjacent lodging. The trip can be even more frugal by camping on park lands.
The draw of Nashville may be
strong, but nearby Chattanooga also can be an entertaining place to enjoy some southern hospitality. Chattanooga is centrally located to many areas in the United States. Chattanooga hosts the Tennessee Aquarium, which has a large freshwater aquarium and an opportunity to touch sturgeon, which is an ancient fish species.
When seeking warmer climates and sandy beaches, many travelers immediately think of the Caribbean islands. But for the budget-conscious, countries like El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Costa Rica may be more affordable. These countries are home to rich jungles and ancient ruins as well.
Theme parks may be a big part of Florida’s tourist draw, but such parks can be expensive for families. Looking elsewhere in Florida for dream destinations that are easier on the pocketbook doesn’t take a lot of work.
St. Augustine in Northern Florida is America’s oldest city and is packed with historical monuments, quaint shops and great dining. The city also sits a mere five miles northwest of St. Augustine Beach, which offers miles of shoreline to explore.
Plenty of people flock to the relaxing shores of Spain or enjoy the culture and nightlife of France. Nestled nearby, Portugal has its own beautiful beaches, delicious food, historic cities, and locally produced wines without the inflated prices of nearby countries.
Quebec City’s rich history makes it a must-see Canadian destination. It is particularly vibrant in winter, when the snowy landscape creates picture-perfect memories. Accommodations also are very affordable.
Traveling doesn’t have to cost much when budget-friendly destinations are on the map.
The long-term forecast for the Lake George Area of northeast New York is frost and snow, bringing with it a blizzard of thrills and ‘chills’—from scary rides at Six Flags Great Escape, to ice sculptures at downtown restaurants, fishing on frozen lakes, a frosty outdoor walk through a winter wonderland of lights, and cold beers at the region’s famous Octoberfest events.
This famed, four-season tourist destination, at the southeastern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, is as exciting in the fall and winter as it is all spring and summer.
“We are known for our lakes and mountain views, as well as the abundance of events we have for the fall and winter

spired lagers and ales. “One of the reasons I love fall is for the Oktoberfest and German food,” said Bagshaw.
The brilliant colors of fall foliage serve as the perfect backdrop for endless family friendly events, and an exciting nightlife in scores of bars and restaurants. Many of those adult hot spots are featuring special attractions —handcrafted ice sculptures will be putting a chill in the air at many of the bars throughout the Lake George Area.
There will be many other stars on ice when the Adirondak Thunder hockey team opens its tenth season at the Cool Insuring Arena on Oct. 16th. Games run through the fall and winter, showcasing players who end up on professional teams in the National Hockey League.
Lake George is also famous for fishing, even in the winter, when sportsmen and women break through the ice, dropping their lines in frigid waters to hook their catch of the day.
If you’re angling for something else to do outdoors,
there is world class hiking, skiing and snowboarding on West Mountain and Gore Mountain. There are also two winter carnivals—Lake George Winter Carnival (every February weekend) and the Brandt Lake Winter Carnival (Feb. 15)—where attractions include fireworks, keg throwing, a polar plunge, snowmobiling and other activities.
One of the Area’s newer events is Winter’s Dream, an interactive, immersive light show, along a pathway through a winter wonderland at the Fort William Henry Hotel and Museum. The experience features sound effects, like ice cracking, and music.
“It creates an exciting atmosphere, unlike anything you’ve ever experienced,” said Bagshaw.
