Divider and conquer Decorative folding screens combine beauty, function

Today, such room dividers aren’t just a staple from old movies. Both vintage and brand new decorative versions seem to be everywhere — on the pages of interior design magazines, on your Instagram feed and even at big-name retailers. Online antique purveyors Chairish and 1stdibs have a wide selection of screens spanning various periods and styles. The direct-to-consumer furniture brand the Inside offers custom upholstered ones. ou don’t have to binge-watch classic movies to know that when a starlet wanted to “slip into something more comfortable,” she often stepped behind a decorative folding screen before shedding her clothes. As her dress inevitably flew over the top of the room divider, you couldn’t help but think: That screen is so glamorous. For budding interior design nerds like myself, it evoked a more elegant life and the kind of grown-up shenanigans that might be in my future. One day, I, too, may have a spirited conversation with a gentleman caller while a beautiful screen protects my modesty.

HERE DOESN’T seem to be any type of antique that isn’t sold at auctions, flea markets or shops. We were surprised years ago at a flea market when a dealer was offering a wooden artificial leg. It was sold an hour after we saw it. He said it went to a woman who wanted to make a statue, and she had wondered if he had any more. We have seen many sets of false eyes sold, samples of what surgeons would use to replace a missing eye. And bottles of cures too strange to describe. This is a 19th-century optician’s eye test chart made of black painted wood from Andrew Spindler Antiques & Design, a shop in Essex, Massachusetts. It has a metal lamp visor and a linen scroll with letters of different sizes. It was purchased at an antiques show in New York City about 18 years ago for about $1,800. It has since been rewired and the scroll restored, and it was priced at $2,200. Keep your eyes open at antiques shops and you may find another eye test chart. It will certainly be a rare antique. maximalist effect. “An antique screen can add a global element that blends beautifully with other pieces,” says designer Mona Hajj, who often employs them to bring a dash of romance and history to spaces where architecture is lacking. By incorporating decorative screens, homeowners are rebelling not only against bland interiors but also one of the most prevalent trends of the past 40 years: the open floor plan. “With the creation of the great room, homeowners have been preoccupied with knocking down walls and creating communal space,” says designer Annie Elliott of Bossy Color. “Now there’s a slow move toward defining

spaces by their functionality, while still maintaining that open feeling. I do think that people are trying to recover a little of what they’ve lost by opening up an entire floor, and screens can help.” Screens are also an effective way to bring equilibrium to a room in which one design element is overshadowing everything else. That’s what Hildreth did when faced with furnishing a supersized ballroom for a D.C. show house in Potomac. “One end of the room was anchored by a large fireplace, so I found a huge beautiful black Coromandel screen,” he says. “I used that to ground the seating area, giving it equal heft.” Elliott employed a

similar visual trick in a recent project; she upholstered a screen in the same fabric as the drapes, then installed it in a neglected corner of the room, extending the pattern throughout the space and creating a sense of balance. Depending on the material, screens can provide another benefit. Those made of lacquer or tea paper can magnify or soften both the natural and artificial light in a space. “So much of how we experience or fall in love with a room has to do with the way light is reflected,” Hildreth says. “Having things with dimension, like the folds of a screen, gives the eye a reason to stop and linger, much more so than a flat wall. The effect is really magical.”

Marigolds and pests: Getting rid of pesky notions

G

ARDENERS WHO visit frequently comment, upon seeing a few marigold plants growing in my vegetable beds, that I must have planted the marigolds for pest control. After all, marigolds are supposed to be one of the workhorses of biological pest control. Plant them and plant pests will be killed or — if they are lucky — merely repelled. It’s an appealing concept: sunny plants that thwart pestilence and blight even as they brighten the garden with their blossoms.

Marigolds greatest claim to pest control fame is their effect on nematodes, an effect documented in numerous scientific studies. Marigolds, like other members of the daisy family, also do their share in feeding nectar to beneficial insects, such as syrphid flies, who prey on aphids and other insects that attack our garden plants. Members of the daisy family do not yield nearly as much nectar as flowers of the parsley family — dill, for instance — but daisy nectar flows for a longer period. Other beneficial effects of marigolds are less dramatic or useful. They have been shown to have some slight effect in repelling cabbageworms from cabbage and their kin. And some marigolds, especially a variety called Stinking Roger, repel flies, but the kind that bother cows and other domestic animals, not plants. Read and listen to claims

beetles. As such, they have been used to stop Japanese beetle damage — by attracting the beetles away from other garden plants! Perhaps you should blanket your garden with marigolds, because that’s how you have to plant them for some of their pest controlling benefits. British studies showed that African marigolds killed weeds such as ground ivy and bindweed, but the marigolds were planted densely and ear-

also stole water and nutrients from nearby cabbages. So which is better? Stunted cabbages or those with some leaves lacy from worm feeding? I have no further details about a claim made that marigolds inhibit “underground” slugs (whatever they are), but I do know that marigolds, especially the Gem varieties, are a favorite food of the slimy slugs I do see. Actually, marigolds are also a favorite food of Japanese

WASHINGTON

Long-term U.S. mortgage rates steady at 3.82% U.S. long-term mortgage rates were little changed this week, after six straight weeks of declines putting them at historically low levels. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday the average rate on the 30year, fixed-rate mortgage held steady from the week before at 3.82%, its lowest point since September 2017. By contrast, a year ago the

benchmark rate stood at 4.62%. The average rate for 15-year, fixed-rate home loans slipped this week to 3.26% from 3.28%. The declining rates have been a boon to potential purchasers in the spring home buying season, and the number of prospective buyers seeking mortgages jumped last month.

Mortgage applications for new home purchases increased 20.1% in May from a year earlier, according to new data from the Mortgage Bankers Association. The rush into the bond market has pushed up bond prices and depressed their yields. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which influences mortgage rates, was 2.12% late Wednesday, unchanged from

a week earlier. It fell to 2.10% around midday Thursday. Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country between Monday and Wednesday each week to compile its mortgage rate figures. The average doesn’t include extra fees, known as points, which most borrowers must pay to get the lowest rates. The average fee on 30-year

The backstamp helps date the piece. Apple pattern dishes were made in the United States from 1940 to 1979 and in England from 1979 to 2004. D innerware is hard to sell. You can contact a matching service like Replacements Ltd., but you will have to

pack and ship the dishes, and you will get about half of what they sell them for because they have to make a profit too. It’s easier to try to sell the dishes at a local consignment shop, or just donate them to a charity and take the tax deduction.

This clever classic folds for easy storage

I

T’S NOT DIFFICULT to see what makes an Adirondack chair so appealing. The combination of built-in comfort and timeless style always adds up to classic design. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, now you can add “easy convenience” to the formula — because this clever classic folds up for storage. Perfect for outdoor relaxing, the chair is designed with all the comfort and stability of a stationary model.

But when it’s time to put everything away for the winter, simply lift the rear locking rail and fold the back forward and the chair is ready to store in the garage or shed. All 20 of the project’s parts are traced from full-size patterns, making it easy enough for most beginners. To build, just trace the pieces onto standard lumber, cut out and sand. To finish, add sealer, paint Next, assemble everything or stain. The chair measures 37 using glue and screws.
