achieving that. Humbled, because it’s always flattering to receive public recognition. Determined, because we want to stay on top – it’s hard to win, but it’s even harder to repeat, and we don’t want to give up this coveted crown,” said Thomas Senecal, president and CEO of PeoplesBank. It’s all about the “people.” “Our two Reader Raves awards tell us that customers see our commitment to service, and it’s making an impression on them. These days, ‘good’ customer service is almost the norm, and to stand out, you need to be even better than that. We believe we have made the leap from ‘good to great’, as the saying goes,” said Senecal. As for being named Best Mortgage Lender, James Sherbo, senior vice president of Consumer Lending said it is all about their ”great rates, great service, personalized attention and extremely fast ‘turn times’” from the opening of an application to the closing of the loan. “The team environment and open group collaboration ensures personalized atten-
tion for each customer, from start to finish. Everyone on our team is working towards earning the highest grade in customer satisfaction,” said Sherbo. Founded in Holyoke, PeoplesBank has been serving the needs of the community since 1885. “We believe everyone has a strong emotional connection to their hometown, and our bank is no different. For many years, Holyoke was where all of our customers lived, worked and played. Though we have expanded our footprint beyond Holyoke to serve all of the Pioneer Valley and into Connecticut, we will always hold Holyoke in a special place in our hearts. We want to ‘do right’ by Holyoke, and we believe how we have handled the Yankee Pedlar project is evidence of that,” said Senecal. to your first choice in obtaining quality health care,” said Nancy Shendell-Falik, RN, president of Baystate Medical Center and senior vice president of Hospital Operations for Baystate Health. Beyond its Best Local Hospital designation, Baystate Medical Center’s care extends beyond the Springfield area as the tertiary care referral center for the region, offering a comprehensive range of medical services, including the only Level I trauma center for both adults and pediatric emergencies in western Massachusetts. Also, Baystate Children’s Hospital – a fully accredited hospital within Baystate Medical Center – is home to the region’s only Level III neonatal intensive care unit. On the national level, Baystate Medical Center was
recently recognized in U.S. News and World Report’s 2018-2019 Best Hospitals rankings as the third best hospital in Massachusetts. It was also recognized as high performing in 5 adult specialties and 7 procedures or conditions including heart bypass surgery and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). “Our many recognitions, which reflect a vote of confidence by both our patients and the numerous organizations who measure our quality and safety, are a testimony to our highly-skilled team of caregivers who are dedicated to delivering high-quality compassionate care to our patients and their families,” Shendell-Falik said. Baystate Medical Center has been providing skilled and compassionate health care to
the people of Greater Springfield for more than 140 years. From its earliest beginnings when Springfield Hospital opened its door in 1883, through the multi-hospital partnership that created the modern-day Baystate Medical Center in 1976, to today’s continually evolving integrated health care system, Baystate has grown alongside the many communities it serves. Today Baystate Medical Center is a nationally-distinguished teaching hospital, a center for research, and the home of Springfield’s first medical school campus, University of Massachusetts Medical School – Baystate, helping to train the doctors of the future. BEST LOCALLY OWNED FURNITURE STORE Pieroway’s Furniture By Allison Litera
The Republican
There’s no better way than Pieroway’s when it comes to purchasing your furniture locally. Dubbed “Best Locally Owned Furniture Store” once again, the folks at Pieroway’s do their best to ensure quality furniture at excellent prices. “We’ve been family-owned since 1950, right here in Western Mass,” says owner Mike Ouimette. “Our Ludlow store is the flagship store, and our West Springfield location opened in 1987.” Ouimette has been with the company
for over 50 years. The store specializes in American-made furniture brands such as Bassett, Stearns & Foster, King Koil, Amesbury, Daniel’s Amish, Ames Amish, and more. They carry couches, bedding, armchairs, recliners, rugs, bedroom sets, dining sets, lamps, side tables, and more. “We love selling American-made home furnishings,” he adds, “with over 90% of our furniture proudly built in the USA. With American-made and American-assembled furniture, there are

The store has their own internal customer service department and uses their own delivery staff without any outside sourcing. On top of that, the store never runs a sale. “We give guaranteed savings every day,” says Ouimette. “Customers never have to wait for a sale. We don’t

We like supporting our local community and offering furniture that will give our customers years of satisfaction.” Ouimette is pleased that they have won Reader Raves once more. “It’s so rewarding that people recognize us, a local business. It assures us that we’re doing a great job and our customers are enjoying their experience with us,” he says. Praise is in bloom for Durocher Florist, recipient of the “Best Florist” award in the 2019 Reader Raves poll by The Republican and MassLive. “We’re very thrilled,” said Mary Beth Soule, co-owner with her husband, Peter B. Thank You! Landmark at Monastery Heights
The florist also has been awarded a top 500 Telefora Florist in the USA award for the past four years; this award is one of the most prestigious in the industry with more than 36,000 florists competing for the honor. Soule credited her staff with the success of the business, especially Heather Sullivan, AIFD, CFD, manager and bridal coordinator. “We have a wonderful staff ” of about a dozen full- and part-time employees, the co-owner said, adding that the business’ easy-to-navigate website also contributes to its success. Durocher Florist offers floral arrangements for all occasions. In addition, the florist carries a line of Memory Lamps, which often are purchased to express sympathy over the loss of a loved one. Styles include butterflies, dragonflies, Tiffany-style lamps and unique hand-made Irishthemed lamps. Customers can also pair
a Memory Lamp with a fresh-flower design. There is local lamp delivery plus worldwide shipping options. Durocher Florist sells “a lot of roses,” Soule said, and at this time of year also sells a lot of locally grown flowers like dahlias, gladiolas and zinnias. “People like to buy local flowers,” she said, but “we can pretty much have (those) flowers year round” thanks to sourcing from throughout the world. Founded by Bob Durocher, Durocher Florist has been serving the greater Springfield area since the late 1940's. He was committed to offering only the finest and freshest floral arrangements, plants and gifts backed by service that was friendly and prompt. BEST LOCAL ON-AIR TELEVISION PERSONALITY Dave Madsen, Western Mass News
Dave Madsen, of Western Mass News, a 48-year veteran in the broadcast business, was named Best Local on Air Television Personality by Reader Raves. (FREDERICK GORE PHOTO)
By KEITH O’CONNOR
Special to The Republican
For years people have been inviting him into their living rooms and even their bedrooms when they turn on the television at suppertime and bedtime.
He’s Dave Madsen, longtime news anchor at Western Mass New, voted Best On Air Television Personality in the 2018 Republican/MassLive Reader Raves survey. Madsen also holds the distinction of being the first
television broadcaster from Western Massachusetts to be inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. “It’s always an honor to be recognized by Western Mass News viewers and readers of the Republican and MassLive,” said Madsen, who has been the recipient of a Reader Raves every year since the award program’s inception. The popular news anchor – who is celebrating his 48th year in broadcasting and his 26th anniversary at Western Mass News – noted he believes his Reader Raves award is recognition for not only what he does on television, but for his work on behalf of the community as well. “I’ve been anchoring and reporting the news of Western Massachusetts for 40 years on television and 10 in radio. So, I’ve been a part of people’s lives for a long time, both on the air and off. Plus, I was born in Western Mass and have lived in Southampton all
of my life. I grew up watching the news on Channel 40. So, to be honored for my work really is recognition of not only what I do, but of what those who came before me accomplished. That makes the recognition even more of an honor, especially as I near retirement,” Madsen said. His interest in journalism and broadcasting dates back to his youth. “I’ve always been fascinated with radio and television. I listened to WHYN Radio growing up. I knew I wanted to be a broadcaster. I started
in radio when I was 19 years old and moved to television when I was 28. So, I’ve been very fortunate to work in a business that has really been my passion since I was very young,” said Madsen, who added that he has always believed his job as a journalist is “to present both sides of a story to our viewers and let them decide.” For more information on Madsen and Western Mass News, visit westernmassnews.com.

The “Best Food Truck” in the area serves falafel, hummus and other Middle Eastern treats. Holyoke Hummus Company earned the title in the 2019 Reader Raves poll by The Republican and MassLive. “Making people happy with our food is what it’s all about,” said John L. Grossman, owner. “I’m happy to be part of the growing food truck culture here in Western Mass.” The food truck, known as The Great Garbanzo, can be
found throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, at music festivals, community events and food truck festivals. Grossman considers other food truck businesses neighbors rather than competitors. “It’s always a better event when we’re serving alongside other trucks, especially those that complement us,” he said. BEST CITY/TOWN LOCAL OFFICIAL Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno By KEITH O’CONNOR
Special to The Republican
What does it mean to Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno to be named Best City or Town Local Official for five years in a row in the annual Republican/ MassLive Reader Raves poll? “It means the world to me and is a testament to my administration and the good team we’ve put together who are working so hard on behalf of our city. I love my job and live it 24-7. I’m born and bred in Springfield and proud to live here,” Sarno said. “I believe the vote sends a great message to everyone about our city and is a recognition of their confidence not only in my ability as mayor, but in what Springfield has to offer,” he added. Sarno was born in Springfield on May 4, 1963 – the son
of World War II survivors Alfonso and the late Clara Sarno, who immigrated to America and settled in Springfield. He is a graduate of the High School of Commerce, where he excelled as an athlete and scholar. His interest in politics began early after being elected class president as a freshman and junior in high school. An athletic scholar, he was named to All Western Massachusetts in soccer and All City League in baseball. He continued his interest in political affairs at American International College where he was a political science major and holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Westfield State College. Sarno’s service to the community began as a mayoral aide under Mayor Mary
Hurley from 1989 to 1991. He worked with District Attorney William Bennett from 1996 to 2002 and formerly served as executive director of the South End Community Center. A former four-term City Councilor who served as City Council President and as a member of the Springfield Finance Control Board, he was elected to his first term as mayor in 2007. He is now in his fourth term and plans to run again in 2019. “I want to thank all Reader Raves voters for their confidence and promise them that I will not rest on my laurels and will continue to make Springfield proud,” Sarno said. has yet again taken home the prize for “Best Local Bridal Boutique”. They’re not just
another bridal warehouse. They take pride in their exceptional one-on-one service. “We strive for class and elegance,” says Marissa Szczepanek, Assistant Manager of Bridal Corner. “We want our customers to feel royal when they come here.” Szczepanek, 35, is the daughter of Analia St. George, current owner of the boutique. St. George plans on keeping the business in the family and will pass the torch to her daughter within the next several years. “Our staff is what makes us so special,” says Szczepanek. “We are so proud of them and how family-oriented we all are. We like to keep the family atmosphere in our store; we want brides to feel like they’re at home.” In addition to being a multitime Reader Raves winner,

Bridal Corner is known for its large rotating conveyor of dresses running through its upstairs dressing rooms. “We carry hundreds of gowns, sorted by budget,” adds Szczepanek. This makes for a hassle-free shopping trip. Brides can look forward to the latest styles as well. To stay on top of bridal trends, the boutique purchases gowns twice a year – in spring and fall – coinciding with the bridal seasons. In addition to bridal gowns, Bridal Corner is home to Ron’s Formal Wear and dozens of bridesmaid styles. They do alterations in-house and offer a variety of bridal jewelry and accessories. “The best part about being in the bridal industry is getting to be such a crucial part of someone’s big day,”

The family business now employs some 20 full- and part-time workers. BEST DAY CARE/PRE-SCHOOL Square One BY ALLISON LITERA
The Republican
Best Day Care/Pre-School winner Square One. At left is Joan Kagan, President and CEO, and at right is Kristine Allard, Chief Development & Communications Officer. (ALLISON LITERA / THE REPUBLICAN)
Yes, you can That’s the answer you can expect to hear from us. When you call Glenmeadow, we’ll take the time to learn what’s important to you.
24 Tabor Crossing Longmeadow, MA 800.633.6313 glenmeadow.org
In keeping with our non-profit mission to serve seniors, we offer a continuum of care and services to help you stay independent, whether you live in your own home, in one of the apartments on our campus, or in another retirement community. We can help you thrive in the place you call home.
Believe it or not, Square One, nearly 135 years old, stemmed from a women’s industrial house of laundry. “Back at the end of the 1800s, there was a big wave of immigrants to our area,” says Joan Kagan, President and CEO of Square One. “Men went to work in the factories, while women, who didn’t have the skillset for working in an industrial city, got together and decided to teach how to wash, iron and sew clothes.” Many of these women were in child-bearing years. “The women opened a nursing facility which started as the Springfield Day Nursery. As time went on, the mission has remained the same – to support parents as they go to work.” The Springfield Day Nursery became Square One in 2008. Nowadays, they aim to do much more than simply babysit the children. As its namesake says, the non-profit organization is all about "starting at square one". In addition to caring for and educating children, the organization plays a big part in family life and getting parents on the right track as well. "We believe everyone has a bright future," says Kristine
Allard, Chief Development & Communications Officer. "We keep caregivers in the loop and take on a one-on-one approach with children. We encourage this care to continue at home." Square One currently has four Springfield locations, including its headquarters at 1095 Main Street in Springfield. “Springfield and the surrounding area has a really rich community in many ways,” says Allard. “Being a non-profit, we rely on help from community partnerships, funding, and service providers. We collaborate rather than compete with the community. This is part of our success. And when people see our Reader Raves awards hanging in our lobby, we are making them aware of our presence in the community. It’s reinforcement that we are doing the right thing and helping the community we serve.” Kagan adds "It is a validation of what we believe in and have always stood for; providing quality early education and care and services that assist children and their families. We’re meeting the needs of the families we serve and helping them seek the services they need." Visit startatsquareone.org to learn more.

SWEAT doesn’t just stand for the perspiration that’ll come from a hot yoga class. “It’s actually an acronym,”
says co-founder Shannon Rolston. “S – Surrender; W – Wonder; E – Equanimity, which means standing in the eye of a storm and maintaining your stability and
composure; A – Authenticity; T – Truth.” SWEAT Power Yoga opened in June 2016 on Shaker Road in East Longmeadow and has been attracting students from

all over Hampden County and beyond. What makes it so unique? It is a studio that practices variations of only one particular type of yoga: Batiste Power Vinyasa Yoga. “There are not a lot of local studios that practice this specific type of hot yoga,” says co-founder Krystal Say. If you think practicing yoga in a 95-degree room sounds totally bonkers, consider the health benefits. “Our infrared heat comes from cove heaters in the ceiling and the walls,” says Say. “It is a very clean, therapeutic, and healing heat, unlike the stale heat you might experience in a house filled with dust mites and mold.” Yes, you will sweat profusely, but the results after class are sure to make you feel great. Detoxification, pain relief, increased metabolism, increased circulation, and increased flexibility are all benefits of taking hot yoga classes over time. “The heat layers on an appropriate amount of intensity that will get you out of your comfort zone,” adds Say.
If you’re new to hot yoga, fear not; classes encompass all levels. The Inner Flow class is a meditative, slow flow class that infuses mindful meditation with a slow Vinyasa flow. They even have a Warrior Yoga class for students in grades 4-8. The classes are also excellent for people who dislike traditional gym-related workouts but still want a good sweat session. “Our classes are accessible,” assures Say. “We have students as young as the fourth graders [in Warrior Yoga classes] and as old as 75. We truly welcome you to restore, renew, and honor your body and all its work.” Rolston and Say are incredibly proud of their students and the community they’ve created within the studio. Rolston concludes “To us, it’s not about winning. It’s about celebrating our business. We don’t take our Reader Raves win as being better than any other yoga studio. We are celebrating the yoga community as a whole.” Visit sweatpoweryoga.com to learn more or book a class.

Pioneer Valley Fiberglass Pools and Spas of Holyoke is proud to announce they are breaking ground on a new 5,000 square foot $1M showroom and design center in Westfield, MA next year. For 17 years Pioneer Valley Fiberglass Pools has been the choice for families looking for low maintenance family fun. They offer sales and installation of Leisure Pools, the leader in composite fiberglass pool manufacturing. With hundreds of successful installations throughout MA, CT, RI, NH and VT, Pioneer Valley and Leisure Pools is the winning combination of installation experience and an award-winning product
The company has been in business for 17 years and installs approximately 40 inground fiberglass pools a year and is looking forward to doubling that number with the new design center. Clarence (Clancy) Kaye, the Owner, had this to say when we spoke with him about the new location: “Our new facility will enable families to ‘experience’ a fiberglass pool. Afterall, if you’re going to buy a car, you take it for a test drive. Our new location situated on over 4.65 prime acres of highly visable land on routes 10 & 202 will have six functional inground pools and a spa, as well as, an indoor showroom and offices that will let families come for a swim and see why fiberglass is such a great choice.” In addition to the inground pools, design center and showroom, PVF Pools will have dozens of pools in stock ready for delivery to support the growing demand for fiberglass pools. “This is key as the demand is so great currently and into the future, we cannot keep up and having stock locally for immediate delivery will be a great hedge against product inventory shortfall,” says Kaye. The demand for fiberglass pools has doubled in the last 10 years, and is the fastest growing segment in the pool industry. Why the increased demand? Kaye says “consumers have options, and with the internet today have knowledge, which equals power. Couple that with all the benfits a composite fiberglass pool can offer, it really is a long term no brainer.” Today, the company offers incredible color options, pool/spa combinations, tanning ledges, infinity edges and in 2018, the first-ever beach entry pool. “All our pools come with a Lifetime Warranty supported by the manufacturer, for further assurance. We currently offer all those options and features. Now they can see and experience them all in one place. I am so excited to see what the next 17 years brings us. We have been at this for a long time, we are one of the most experianced fiberglass pool builders in New England. We have won dozens of awards, have a 5 star reputation and with over 450 projects completed, we are the obvious choice for the smart consumer."
