“What I wish I knew” BEFORE MY WEDDING

LOCAL BRIDES WEIGH IN ON WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE CHANGED ABOUT THEIR WEDDING DAY, AND WHAT THEY LOVED AND WOULDN’T HAVE CHANGED AT ALL!

Compiled by Allison Litera

REBECCA & MARK

APRIL 19, 2015 • AGAWAM, MA

NICOLLE & PATRICK

NOVEMBER 11, 2016 • FOXBOROUGH, MA

SHAYNA & CHRIS

DECEMBER 3, 2016 • STURBRIDGE, MA

What I wish I knew: I wouldn’t have felt the “guest list guilt”. We ended up having over 150 guests to avoid hurt feelings. It was amazing, but if I had one do-over, I’d have made it a more intimate event, or even elope. What I loved: We didn’t dwell on the fine details and kept things simple. We chose the first venue we visited, I bought my dress at the first store I shopped at, no DJ, no fancy chair ribbons, no excess stress. Planning a wedding was fun, and our wedding ended up being fun, too! Nothing to be disappointed with because we didn’t get caught up in what some lists say you should.

8

What I wish I knew: I wish we had gotten married a little earlier in the day so that we could get some photos outside. Our venue’s grounds were beautiful, but it was November so by the time our ceremony ended it was totally dark outside and we had to take all of our groups photos inside. The variety of the landscape would have been nice to have in our pictures! What I loved: Even though they’re becoming increasingly popular, my husband and I chose not to do first look photos, and we were actually really happy with the decision. We didn’t see or talk to each other for the entire day prior to the ceremony, and it made walking down the aisle even more exciting since we were seeing each other for the first time! Photo by Justin Cross, Classic Photographers.

What I wish I knew: Your wedding day goes by like a blur! I know everyone says that but it truly does. One thing that I wish I had done differently was more “posed” pictures with our bridal party. We have so many amazing candid shots from day of but I wish I had a picture of myself with each individual bridesmaid since they were such an integral part of our big day! Looking back on our wedding we have so many wonderful group shots, but I think we could’ve utilized the grounds of the country club/golf course for our photos a bit more, too. What I loved: Our venue! When we looked at different venues, we both immediately fell in love with Crestview Country Club. The wall of floor to ceiling windows was absolutely stunning! We were married in April, which can be very unpredictable in terms of weather. One of the things we loved about our venue was that it had a beautiful outdoor ceremony space and their indoor ceremony space was also equally pretty! We highly recommend picking a venue that has options because you never know how Mother Nature will behave on your wedding day! Photo by Eyecon Photography.

DANIELLE & RYAN MAY 26, 2017 • TOPSFIELD, MA

What I wish I knew: Ryan and I have talked about this and there really isn’t much we would have changed about our day. We honestly did have the most magical, fun wedding ever. I think the one thing I would have changed would have been to get a few more photos with my extended family. For the sake of enjoying our wedding and not spending the whole time taking pictures, we just did bridal party, portraits and immediate family for formal pictures. However if I could go back, I would have made sure to get a few pictures with my grandma and nana and aunts and uncles. It’s very rare to have your whole family all together and I wish I had taken advantage of it better, but everyone tells you how fast the day goes (and it does) and I wanted to make sure we were in the moment and enjoying every minute. I would also have maybe decided to do Ryan and my formal pictures the following day when there would have been a lot less stress and much more time. What I loved: I loved that our wedding was just so much FUN. It was very classy and elegant but also wasn’t stuffy or boring. I’ve been told by some of our guests that they’ve never seen so many of the wedding guests out on the dance floor for as much of the wedding as they did with ours, and I love that!! I also loved that we were able to customize it to our tastes as much as we did. We custom built our altar ourselves and I handmade most of the signage. As someone who worked in the wedding industry as a planner for two years, and now works in it as a photographer, I used to grimace when a bride mentioned DIY. But I totally understand why brides love to do it as it made our wedding feel just so much more “us.” Photo by Wild Souls Studio.

KATHERINE & VINCE OCTOBER 2, 2015 • WATERBURY, CT

What I wish I knew: I wish I had not cut corners with my photographer. We did a lot of cheaper options for our wedding since we were paying for it ourselves, but I wish we had splurged on that aspect. Looking back at my wedding I only have one or two photos that I actually love. What I loved: I loved our venue, and I loved how we incorporated ourselves into the wedding. We got married at La Bella Vista and it was perfect, down to every detail. Also we made sure that it was evident that it was our wedding, nothing cookie cutter, very personalized and unique. Photo by Garrett Ward Photography.

FALLON & ANDREW DECEMBER 31, 2016 • HADLEY, MA What I wish I knew: I wish we had more detailed directions to our ceremony space, Johnson Chapel at Amherst College (which someone suggested but we didn’t listen). The space was on the second floor of the building. Most of our guests ended up getting lost and had a hard time finding our ceremony, so it delayed our start time. What I loved: I would never change having a New Year’s Eve wedding. It was the best decision and everyone was ready to party. I’m so happy we chose that day.

AFFORDABLE

bachelor/bachelorette PARTY IDEAS By Allison Litera

Many men and women like to travel for their bachelor/bachelorette parties, and cost-conscious bridal party members may be concerned about how pricey such parties can be. Weddings can be expensive! Couples and their parents may bear the brunt of wedding expenses, but those who have accepted a role in the wedding party also can expect their share of expenses. Taking into account gifts, wardrobes, makeup, bridal showers, and travel, including getting to and from the bachelor/bachelorette party, bridal party members are on the hook for a lot of money when their friends or family members tie the knot. Pulling out all the stops can be exciting, but there's no guarantee these types of parties will be more enjoyable than simpler soirées. Taking steps to control costs can help cost-conscious couples and their friends. The following are some affordable, local ideas that can be fun for all involved: BAR OR WINERY CRAWL: Partygoers typically want to enjoy a night out

10

on the town, and traveling from one establishment to another can be a fun way to do just that. With a heap of breweries and wineries in Western Massachusetts, there is no shortage of options. Everyone invited can set themselves apart with a signature item (custom hats, t-shirts, or sunglasses), and make the rounds. Consider hiring a party bus or limousine service to tote you around town and deliver you all back home safely. ATTEND A GROUP EVENT: Group events include sporting events, concerts, theater shows, or a night at a comedy club. Investigate discounted tickets for large groups. A fun example is Northampton’s Bon Appetit Burlesque, which occurs monthly at Club V in Florence, MA.

BELT OUT THE TUNES: Open mic nights at restaurants, bars and other establishments around town may make for a fun way for friends to share a few laughs together. Participants need not be professional singers to join in on the festivities. Check out The Republican’s weekly Weekend section for a full listing of bars and clubs! CAMP OUT: Get in touch with nature

by enjoying a camping trip, complete with a campfire and a few brews. Spending time in the wilderness can restore focus and let stress melt away. The Berkshires are chock full of campsites and gorgeous views. POKER OR GAME NIGHT: Groups can gather around the poker table to test their skills in poker and other card games. With some free-flowing beverages and snacks galore, games can get pretty animated. You could even head out for a night at MGM Springfield’s own poker room. TREAT YOURSELF: Gather up the group for a spa day or relax in a hot tub at Amherst’s Elements Hot Tub Spa or Northampton’s East Heaven Hot Tubs. This is great fun during the chillier months, or if going out on the town isn’t your style.

DINNER PARTY: Hire a chef to visit your house and prepare a meal for guests. Serve a signature cocktail and let the conversation flow. Bachelor and bachelorette parties can be affordable without sacrificing fun!

s t e p g n i d u incl IN YOUR WEDDING

By Allison Litera

Including your pet in your wedding day is a big decision for some couples. What if they won’t stop barking at your guests? What if they pee on your dress? What if they won’t behave for photos? AHB Pet & Home Care, based in Indian Orchard, MA, wants to take out the stress and worrying about finding a credible pet sitter for your big day and give their clients as comfortable and reliable service as possible. Their Pet Chaperone program allows couples to seamlessly include pets in their special event. Pet chaperones take care of tasks such as picking up pets and bringing them to the venue, driving the pet back to the reception, or taking pets for walks and bathroom breaks and keeping them calm.

“The great thing about having us there is you 100% won’t have to worry about your pet on your big day,” says Honey Boardman, one of the owners of AHB. She and her husband Aaron started the business in July 2015. Whether it’s cats, dogs, birds, fish, guinea pigs, chickens, or even flying squirrels, they’ve got their clients covered. We chatted with Honey and Aaron about what couples should consider before hiring a pet chaperone:

CAN YOU DESCRIBE A TRICKY SITUATION WITH A PET AT A WEDDING AND HOW YOU AND YOUR TEAM HANDLED IT? We assisted a skittish dog to be a part of the wedding pictures. This required that she stayed away from the guests until it was her time to shine. We kept her away but stayed alert as to how things were moving along with the ceremony so that the pup would be ready for pictures without holding things up.

WHICH OF YOUR PET SERVICES IS THE MOST COMMON FOR WEDDINGS? Pet transportation to and from wedding events. Another very popular service is pet boarding a day or two before the wedding until a couple of days after the wedding.

WHAT KINDS OF PETS HAVE PEOPLE INCLUDED IN THEIR WEDDING(S)? IT IS MOSTLY DOGS? We have had inquiries for other pets, but we have only worked with dogs at weddings so far. We are open to other animals, however.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL PRICE RANGE THAT A COUPLE CAN EXPECT TO PAY FOR YOUR SERVICES? On average, our wedding services will cost a couple around $200. This is a wonderful wedding gift for many couples, and we do offer gift cards! WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING SERVICES, FOR BOTH YOUR STAFF AND THE COUPLE? We love making special days complete! Couples appreciate being able to include their pets without worrying about them.

NICOLE WZOREK DESIGNS

By Allison Litera

Can’t seem to find the right wedding dress? Have a vision that you just can’t put into words? Those looking for help creating a custom gown, look no further than Nicole Wzorek Designs. Based out of her Westfield studio, Nicole is more than just another wedding dress seamstress. “I’ve always wanted to be an artist,” she says. “I always loved painting and fashion illustration and creating something from nothing.” At only 28 years old, Nicole is already an extremely accomplished fashion designer and alteration specialist. Her repertoire of work ranges from bridal to prom gowns to

custom lingerie, ready-to-wear pieces, and even birthing skirts for pregnant women. “I fell in love with sewing in college and caught on with it very quickly,” she says. “I was able to create a dress before I even took a basic draping class. I was hooked!” Nicole graduated from Lasell College in 2012 with a double degree in fashion design and fashion merchandising. Post-college, she gained first-hand experience as an alterations specialist at a local bridal shop. She learned from women who have been sewing their entire lives. Nicole’s techniques and quality improved significantly during this time.

This led to forming her own business officially in 2016. Nicole’s looks are romantic, sensual, and full of details like appliques and her own brand name tags sewn inside. While she is capable of designing many styles, her favorite is Victorianera costuming. She is an accomplished corset maker, utilizing steel boning by hand in her corset designs. Corsets are a staple in Victorian designs. “I was lucky enough to get to take a corset-making course in London,” she adds. Her experience with a multitude of materials, from steel to lace, makes her a fantastic choice to trust with your wedding day look. So where do you start with creating

13

“THE MAGICAL THING ABOUT CUSTOM WORK IS THAT IT CREATES AN UNFORGETTABLE BOND BETWEEN ME AND MY CLIENTS. EVERYONE DESERVES TO LOOK AND FEEL BEAUTIFUL, AND I DO MY BEST TO HELP ACCOMPLISH THAT!”

a custom look? The entire process starts with an initial consultation with Nicole. “It’s helpful when clients bring in photos and ideas of the general look and what kind(s) of fabric they might want to use,” advises Nicole. This can range from photos from Pinterest to samples you may have tried on already to no avail. From there, she will take a client’s measurements and go over pricing, create some sketches, and then make a muslin mock-up of the dress for them to try on at their next appointment. “The entire process usually consists of 3-5 appointments, including the consultation,” says Nicole. On a weekly basis, Nicole meets with anywhere from 5-10 brides. When looking for custom bridal, Nicole advises that clients approach her at least a year in advance. “Some people may not realize how long creating a wedding gown from scratch can take,” explains Nicole. Consider that it takes anywhere from 6-8 months for a designer dress to come in at a bridal salon. Nicole’s process is the same, and then some. Brand new wedding gowns by Nicole require at least 1-2 years’ time to

create. Her detailed, personalized touches and perfected seams are worth the extra wait, though. “I am very detail-oriented and patient and can understand that there is a meaning for each seam and each piece of the puzzle,” she says. “I put a lot of effort into each of my pieces. I want the fit to be perfect and the client to be happy.” Nicole is capable of creating other bridal pieces, too, including custom veils, mother-of-the-bride dresses, bridesmaid dresses, accessories, and bridal lingerie. She once even created

a groom’s tie and pocket square to match the fabric of his bride’s gown. If a bride is still stuck on what she would like, Nicole has plenty of sample looks in her studio. She can also take pre-existing gowns and alter them, whether they are brand name or the bride’s mother’s gown. “I’m not a typical seamstress. I’m going to design your dress instead of just altering it,” she explains. “At certain bridal salons, they may have limitations as to how they can alter their pieces. But I am willing to do whatever the client needs and wants.” This includes taking a store-bought gown and adding parts of another dress to it, whether it’s your mother’s or grandmother’s gown. Custom work by Nicole comes with a custom price. “I do my best to cater to all price points,” she says. “Brides who like to plan make for great clients as well; Someone who realizes that custom takes time and money, but it’ll be 100% unique to you.” To learn more about Nicole, visit nicolewzorekdesigns.com.

This bride wanted a special surprise! Halfway through their first dance, the groom pulled the bride’s skirt away to reveal a short, ombre bottom to the dress adorned with crystals. Nicole made the custom gown with a tear-away skirt. Nicole, second from left in the above right photo, also made all of the bridesmaid dresses for the wedding. Photos by Leanna Theresa Photography.

Registry Ideas

IF YOU ALREADY LIVE TOGETHER

By Allison Litera

If you’re engaged, odds are you’re probably already living with your partner. In fact, it’s become increasingly common for couples to move in before saying “I do”. Many traditional items, like flatware or linens, may already be in a couple’s inventory, especially if they’ve been cohabitating for more than a year or two. Here are some items at various price points to consider registering for if you are stuck on ideas:

UPGRADED COOKWARE

Your pots and pans are probably a hand-me-down from your sibling or parents. Donate your current

16

set and register for the latest and greatest.

LUGGAGE/TRAVEL SUPPLIES

A new luggage set or a pair of matching suitcases will help you spot your belongings in the baggage claim. Consider a passport wallet or matching luggage tags, too.

FUN AND GAMES

Crank up the fun at your next dinner party with adults-only games like Cards Against Humanity, Red Flags, What Do You Meme?, or That’s What She Said. Tailgating or lawn games like Kubb, Kan Jam, corn hole, ladder ball, or bocce can also be brought on family vacations to the beach or lakeside.

FOR THE KITCHEN

Beer saver caps/wine stoppers, a Kuerig coffee maker, a slow cooker, pizza stone, or nacho baking tray.

BLUETOOTH HOME SPEAKER

Ditch the 90’s boombox and ask for a wireless speaker that can travel wherever your phone goes.

FURNITURE

Need a new coffee table? What about some bar stools? A bookshelf to house your extensive literary collection? Add it to the registry!

UPGRADED BEDDING

Add dimension and different textures

to your current sleeping space. Why not ask for another comforter or duvet that compliments the one you already own? Consider other bedding items like decorative pillows or throw blankets.

PICTURE FRAMES OR WALL DECOR

Whether you rent, lease, or own a house, frames and décor will encourage you to personalize your space with art and photos.

A DSLR CAMERA

Definitely a step up from your phone camera.

Kick it up a notch and ask for GoPro accessories like a chest/head strap, tripod, or waterproof case.

AN INSTANT CAMERA

MEAL KIT DELIVERY

A quick and easy way to snap and print photos! Plus they look super cute hung up in your cubicle or displayed in a frame.

Services like Blue Apron or HelloFresh save time and money. Ask for gift certificates to these meal delivery kits and weekday cooking will be a breeze.

A GOPRO OR WATERPROOF CAMERA

CHILD OR PET SITTING GIFT CARDS

This one is great for those planning an adventure-packed honeymoon.

Certain companies offer gift cards for pet care or child care services.

A WINE RACK OR FRIDGE

Are you a wine aficionado? Store your bottles of wine the way they deserve to be.

A BAR CART

Love mixing cocktails for your guests? Store all your liquors in one spot with a handy bar cart. Pricier options can be found at stores like Crate & Barrel and west elm, where more cost-friendly carts can be found at Target, Walmart, Wayfair, or Amazon.

CASH/HONEYMOON/ NEWLYWED FUNDS

It’s no longer considered tacky to ask for funds toward your honeymoon or new house, especially if you’re stuck on what to register for. Check out honeyfund.com, Zola, or The Knot’s Newlywed Fund for ideas. Zola even has cash funds toward wedding expenses like flowers, décor, your videographer, and hair/makeup.

EXPERIENCE FUNDS

Ask for gift certificates for new experiences or things you’ve always dreamt of doing together: a wine/brew tour, zip lining, white water rafting, museum memberships, farm dinners, tickets to a Broadway show, concert, or sporting event, pottery classes, or dinner at the fanciest restaurant in town. If you’re more practical, consider asking for something like yearly gym memberships or yoga classes.

SELF CARE GIFT CARDS

Make sure to take time to unwind post-wedding after the adrenaline dies down. Ask for a spa day including a couples’ massage and other body treatments to get you feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on married life.

A SECOND MARRIAGE DESERVES AS MUCH CELEBRATION AS THE FIRST AND GIVES COUPLES AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS THEIR LOVE FOR EACH OTHER AND THEIR APPRECIATION TO THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES.

marriages SECOND

A GUIDE TO TYING THE KNOT A SECOND TIME AROUND Taking a chance on love and marriage for the second (or third) time is certainly worthy of celebration. The Pew Research Center reports that at least four in 10 new marriages now include at least one partner who has been married

20

before, a trend that is on the rise. Planning a second wedding can be challenging, as individuals may be worried about proper etiquette, superstitions or meeting the expectations of others. But there are no

hard rules governing second weddings. Now that couples are older and a bit more experienced, wedding planning may be met with greater enthusiasm and patience. These tips can help the process along.

· DRESS IT UP. Brides need not eschew white if they prefer to wear it for their second weddings. White, cream, ivory, or other shades are perfectly acceptable. Also, brides can make their gowns as lavish or as simplistic as they desire. The length and style of the dress should reflect the formality and scope of the event.

Abby Thomsen, Pianist Parties, Weddings, Corporate Events

· MAKE IT UNIQUE. Couples who have been married before may want to set this new occasion apart from their previous weddings. Brides magazine experts suggest discussing previous celebrations and what can be done differently this time around. Couples can use this opportunity to get to know each other more intimately by personalizing their festivities. · DON'T FEEL BEHOLDEN TO INTIMATE AFFAIRS. Second weddings tend to be more intimate, as guest lists tend to be smaller and couples tying the knot again may prefer more intimacy and less hustle and bustle. But couples should not avoid inviting people simply because second weddings are typically small affairs. Invite as many friends and family as you want and as your budget allows. · SET UP A REGISTRY. Established couples may have the household basics already in place, but registries can include fun or entertaining gifts that speak to couples' interests. These may include home theater systems, fancy cookware, athletic equipment, or even funds for travel. · INVOLVE THE CHILDREN. Couples who have children can make them a special part of their second wedding celebrations. Kids can play any role in the ceremony, depending on their age. If the second marriage comes after an amicable divorce, couples can invite their former spouses to provide support to their children so they can feel comfortable in the wedding. · BE PREPARED. The marriage application process is similar the second time around, but additional documents, such as a divorce decree or death certificate, may be necessary. These legal documents also will be needed for men and women who intend to change their last names after getting married.

HAIR: Dre Brown MAKEUP: Dre Brown FIRST DANCE: Absolute Beginners by David Bowie MEMORABLE MOMENT: There were just so many. Seeing Justin for the first time, my father walking me down the aisle & his speech, my sister’s speech, our nieces and nephews being there, our dog whining during our ceremony cause he wanted to be on the platform with us. Seeing the space for the first time. The vintage car that drove us around. MY DRESS! Loved my dress! We also a had a groomsman faint and lost the rings briefly but it made for a memorable ceremony! THEME: Modern, Unique, & Beautiful. Copper, Black, White, and deep deep burgundy color pallet. Wanted to bring in the natural elements in MASS MoCA. The Iron, the wood, the brick, the lights. We wanted it to feel like us, different and unique. We wanted people to walk away going “we’ve never been to an event like this”. We didn’t want the typical wedding venue. We wanted guests to have an experience. OTHER/NOTES: Justin and I live in NYC but we knew we wanted our wedding to be outside the city. Some place our guests could enjoy a weekend celebrating with us. My family

is from Westchester, NY and Justin’s is from Rhode Island, so Massachusetts seemed to be the perfect place for us to look. When we came across MASS MoCA it just felt like us. It was unlike any venue we had been in and had the perfect blend of Industrial, cultural, & suburban vibes that we were looking for. Justine, Chris, & the whole team at MASS MoCA custom built an iron chandelier with suspended Edison bulbs just for our wedding. When we saw the dining room and dance floor my jaw hit the floor. Crocus (our florist & designer), Mezze, & the team at MASS MoCA brought our vision to life in a way I never imagined. Another fun thing we did was, since Justin is a painter, we wanted to highlight his art at the wedding. Painting is something he does as a hobby but a lot people don’t know that about him. So we brought in a bunch of his work and had it displayed down the hallway to our cocktail hour for our guests. The 3 big things were a must for us were: food (and a ton of it), good music, and good drinks. Which is why we decided to go with Mezze as our caterers. Their food is amazing! We had them do a fresh truffle pasta station and filet mignon carving station at our cocktail hour that was to die for. Dessert was also a ton of delicious options: carrot cake, red velvet cake, Italian pastries, and of course a Ben & Jerrys ice cream cart. When the wedding was over we held an after party that had an open bar, a taco truck, a fire pit with smores, pizza and more. I guess you could say we didn’t want the party to end. When planning our wedding I tried to think of every detail and filter it through our style and vibe. I guess it’s just the producer in me. Although producing my wedding was very different then producing a tv show, it was the best & most fun thing I have ever done. If I could do it all over again I would in a heart beat.
