FISHY

in the ‘ice cream world’

by Hanna Niña G. Vera Cruz

People love food. Those mouth-watering, taste bud-tickling little monsters; that’ll make you eat them up and make you ask for more. So it so happens that something smells a bit fishy here at CLSU. I’m sure you have heard of tilapia, right? Maybe the most common, or one of the most common among fish dishes that you would see on your dinner table; surprisingly is very viable. From a kid’s favorite fish fillet to a savory serving of sinigang, tilapia can make everything taste right. But who would have ever thought that this fish that used to be on our dinner plates, possibly dipped in ‘toyomansi’ or paired with buro (fermented rice and fish) can actually become a kid’s favorite frozen treat. Yes, like what you are thinking, tilapia ice cream. What used to be a meal is now a dessert. Sounds fishy, right? TILAPIA ICE CREAM, I’m pretty sure this is something new. It’s exotic, yes. It is definitely a genuine product of none other than our Central Luzon State University (CLSU) specifically of the College of Home

Science and Industry (CHSI) Department of Hospitality Management. And all thanks to Prof. Dana G. Vera Cruz who introduced this new, delicious dessert. This frozen treat was first introduced on September 23, 2011 during the AsianWestern Tilapia Cuisine: Tilapia Food Festival; along with 39 other authentic tilapia dishes. Not to be cliché, but this just

says all I need to say, “Last, but definitely not the least” the tilapia ice cream was the 40th recipe; it was the last one to

be produced, but it was best one, indeed. This concoction was actually a result of the challenge given by Dr. Tereso A. Abella, Director of the Freshwater Aquaculture Center (FAC), to students and teachers to create

different dishes, meals, snacks or desserts, made out of tilapia meat. What’s with this ice cream? What does it have that made it worthy for the media? “It is unique. Maybe it is also the creativity that captured the attention of many people. And this was also made to make ice cream a lot healthier,” said Prof. Vera Cruz. Undeniably, it is unique and indeed, a big amount of creativity was poured onto it. “What’s also different is that, you can actually feel the fish flakes but there is no aftertaste,” she added. But isn’t it strange? Something smells fishy, but it isn’t the ice cream! It’s tilapia ice cream, without the fishy taste. Imagine yourself eating cookies and cream flavored- ice cream with some chocolate sprinkles, those yummy chunks of cookies and the sweet after taste left as the cream melts in your mouth. Imagined it? Eating tilapia ice cream would almost be the same, the only difference is that the cookies are walnuts and cheese and the sprinkle is the

Trivia in the life of a trivia man Sir Emil says that his main goal in life today is to give the best life for his family, which they failed to experience back then. “I won’t settle down until

my family is OK. Right now, I am the breadwinner of the family. It’s hard but it’s very rewarding.” Another thing about Sir Emil is that he loves saxophone music;

politicians to help fund the project. “It will serve as venue for various USHS activities like the Science Fair, Leadership Congress, Grub Street, Sports Festival, Talents’ Show, Acquaintance Party, SSC Coronation Night and PTA General Assembly. Former venues (CLSU Gymnatorium and Tan Yan Kee Gym) for parties like the Coronation Night and Acquaintance Party are ‘a bit far from USHS’,” said Dr. Panuyas.

“With the MPG, students are more secured in night activities,” she added. Upon the completion of MPG, outdoor activities like Sports Festival, PE classes and PMT activities can also be pushed through despite strong rains. The open-door MPG still have provisions for a stage and threelevel bleachers. “I am pleading that they [alumni and parents] help us in providing and seeking financial aid for the construction of the MPG,” said the principal in an interview.

chocolate syrup. You feel the fish flakes, yet you won’t even taste the fish much, there is no aftertaste. Amazing. It’s like you are eating ordinary ice cream, but much healthier. The fish used in the making of the ice cream are the ones that are cultured by the FAC, and the milk being used is the buffalo’s milk produced by the PCC; both products of CLSU. Tilapia ice cream, a homemade dessert that captured the taste buds of many, an exotic dessert that is truly something sweet. For people who don’t have interest in eating seafood like fish, well here comes your problem solver; a new way to enjoy ice cream..or should I say, a new way to enjoy the tilapia. Well, all you need to do is to steam some tilapia, flake its meat, and mix it in all-purpose cream, condensed milk, crushed walnuts and cheese. Leave it overnight inside the freezer, and wait for something good in the

the soft, soothing ones that are nothing but perfect after a long day’s work. You’d usually find his office filled with its calm and peaceful atmosphere. “I find it very relaxing. Usually, when I’m tired, alone or bored , I’m listening to sax music,” said Sir Emil. At 22, Sir Emil seems to have gone through enough flimflam and road apples to make him feel like a ‘before’ and ‘after’ photograph. A lot has changed, and his family is far from living in the dark compared to today. Though, even after learning to stand on his own feet and endure whatever comes knocking upon his doorstep, he has yet to see what life can really give

After two weeks, he won in an extemporaneous speech contest during the Junior Honors’ Circle Provincial Convention at the CLSU College of Business Administration and Accountancy, Nov. 26. “The given topic was familiar to me that is why I have made so much in five minutes. I would like to thank my coaches, Mr. Joel Torres for the VOY and Ms.

Cynthia Lyn Curada for JHC extemporaneous speech contest and my schoolmates who supported me while I was delivering my speech,” Barot added “Having two winning streaks in less than a month is really a big achievement for me. But of course, I couldn’t have done it without our Divine Guidance,” Barrot concluded.

at one blow. For now, he finds satisfaction with what he does; he finds satisfaction in what he is: a great teacher. And just to add up one last bit about Sir Emil, he

shared one of his little secrets: he someday wants to become the University President. “Baka ipatawag na ko ni President nyan!” he laughed again.

Who would have thought that our often ‘funnily serious’ Math teacher was once a little boy from Nampicuan, Nueva Ecija that dream of becoming a scientist (the type that mixes chemicals and makes things explode) and always sleeps in his class?

Mr. Violet

Aldous Cesar Fernando Bueno, born on the 31st of March 1990 to Daisy Alvior Fernando-Bueno and Cesar Miguel Bueno, is the eldest among four children. Growing up, Math really was not his preferred subject. “Grades one to six, Science talaga ang favorite ko. Nagsimula na lang maging Math noong nag-highest ako sa exam namin [ng Math] noong first grading period. Ayun, pinanlaban na rin ako sa Division,” he related when he was asked what his favorite subject was when he was in elementary. He graduated in Nampicuan Central School with flying colors. Sir Aldous received the honor of being the Best in Math and was the class salutatorian. “Lagi akong nakakatulog sa klase pero ‘pag tinawag ako para mag-recite nakakasagot naman,” he confessed (this might be the reason why he just let us be when we fall asleep in his class). Unlike the techie generation of today, he used to be fond of native Filipino games like teks and holen. He is also a fan of game of the minds (scrabble, chess and word factory) when he was in the primary level. When asked what his favorite cartoon character was, he answered, “yung Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” Sir Aldous went to St. Pius X Institute in Cuyapo for his secondary education. He did not expect to be on the top of his class so he really got surprised when his name was announced last (meaning he

He admitted that one time he spent the night in an internet café ‘just to play’. But a realization came to him in his second year in college that playing on-line games is just a waste of time. Like what most of fourth year students do, Sir Aldous gambled his luck at the University of the Philippines College Admission Test and luckily he made it through with a university predicted grade of 2.46. Sir Aldous spent his college days at the University of the Philippines - Baguio taking Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He was a varsity player for the chess and lawn tennis team (still showing that he really likes to play chess). He served as a peer mentor in the Learning Resource Center in UP Baguio. This was the time when he realized that he gets satisfaction in teaching. A self-proclaimed insomniac he was. He only gets two to three hours of sleep at most. His earliest sleeping time when he was in college was when all that we could watch on television is the Philippine National Anthem music video of each station. At the wee hours of the morning, all he does to make time pass is to make modular arts and fractals (thus, leading to the designs of his PowerPoint presentation), and write poems about his bitterness of being an insomniac. During these times, he never fails to drink coffee three times a day. Alas, the bitter pain of sleeping like an owl paid off. Sir Aldous graduated on the 23rd of April 2010. He taught, as a part-time Math instructor, for a year at CLSU College of Arts and Sciences before transferring here at University Science High School. Currently, he is just a thesis away from getting his master’s degree in Mathematics. Digging deeper into Sir Aldous’ guts, we will find that it’s full of Wolverine, Linkin

This sleepy boy was a constant face in essay writing contests, quiz bees in spelling, Science, Filipino, English and (of course) Math. There was this one time in his sophomore year when he only placed second in a Math contest after a series of seven streak clinchers. In his senior year, he lost by one point in a Spelling contest because of the word “fuchsia”. Now I am sure that that word would not be forgotten until he breathes in this planet. When asked what he was like in high school, all he could say was “Natutulog pa rin lagi,”. He was really passionate about his favorite games that he became a constant player of chess, scrabble and patintero. He was not safe from the generation of being hooked to online games. Sir Aldous played Diablo II, Red Alert and RAN online.

Park, The Count of Monte Cristo (which I salute him for reading it for more than just a month, considering it is a two-thousand page e-book). Better serve him sinigang and pinakbet for lunch and spaghetti, pineapple juice and cheeseburger for snack when he visits. Proudly, he said that he has played all the versions of Bookworm (the computer game he likes the most). His favorite carbonated beverage is Sprite. When I asked him the biggest question of all – “Why violet?”, he just casually said “Eh wala… Simula pa noong bata pa ako.” From sapin-sapin, kutsinta, ube, putobumbong to DONATELLO, everything is a shade of violet! Whew! I think now I am a legit “parabolic mouthed person” (as Sir Aldous calls people who blabber). All I really wanted to say is, Calculus is hard.
